Another DARE-ing Post

I talked to my sister Diane on Thursday and confirmed that my nephew, Thomas, still intends to run the DARE 5K with me on August 20. That being the case, I thought I’d best stop pussy-footing around (so to speak) with 24-minute runs on minor hills and drag my butt up the hill to Herkimer County Community College (HCCC).

I ran up the back way, which is not the actual route of the DARE Run. It’s less steep and longer, therefore challenging but not as daunting. Still, once I started up, I felt fairly daunted.

I know I’ve blogged about running that route before and probably been more witty about it. For one thing, nothing much happened this time. As I ran through the residential area, I said hello to a man by his car and waved to another man sitting on his porch. I ran by the dorms and noted the sign, “Private Property No Trespassing,” so I didn’t . I saw a Campus Security vehicle and a red car driving away, so I thought maybe that was a trespasser. I made it to the top of the hill without mishap and started down the steep way. Ah, the view from the top. I kept noticing foot prints and “5K” spray painted on the road with arrows pointing in the opposite direction to where I was going.

I don’t much like running down a steep hill. I think when I run next time I’ll go up the steep side. At least I ran for thirty minutes. The 5K will probably take me a little longer at the rate I’m running lately, but I’ll be motivated.

The DARE 5K is Saturday, August 20, in Herkimer beginning and ending in front of the Historic Herkimer County Jail. The Jr. Fun Run begins at 8:30 am, the 5K at 9:15 am. Good Eats on a Tuesday

Tuesday Steven and I decided to try Sorrento’s in Ilion again. We had previously attempted to dine there on a Friday, but they were too busy (I believe I mentioned it in a blog post). We thought we’d have better luck on a Tuesday. We were right.

“Two for dinner? Dine in?” asked the waiter at the podium when we walked in.

“Yes,” I said. “We want gracious dining surroundings.” That amused him.

The dining room is gracious. I once again admired a painting of a man I presume to be the patriarch of the family standing in what looks like an old fashioned mom and pop grocery. I also like a family tree made of photos pasted on a picture of a tree. I always think I might steal the idea and make one of my family as a Christmas present for my Mom and Dad (don’t tell them).

We ordered drinks — decaf coffee for me and regular for Steve — and heard the specials. I was especially tempted by an appetizer with eggplant, ricotta cheese and proscuitto. When the waiter came back to take our order I ordered a Chicken Francaise Sandwich with Pasta Salad while Steven ordered a Chicken Bacon Wrap with Fries. If the waiter had not asked did we want the eggplant appetizer, I would not have succumbed to temptation, but he did, and I did. I was not sorry. It was delicious. As with many appetizers, it could have been a meal in itself.

Steven managed to eat his whole sandwich and some of his fries. I ate half my sandwich and a little of my salad. It was a good salad, with black olives and little bits of ham and pepperoni. I look forward to enjoying my leftovers. The coffee was good, too. I don’t usually notice the coffee in particular, but this was quite tasty, especially for decaf. I had forgone my usual glass of wine with dinner. I’ll have to remember to do that the next time I dine at Sorrento’s. On a weekday. Or remembering to make a reservation.

Sorrento’s is located at 85 Central Ave., Ilion, NY, 315-894-9991. They are open Monday to Thursday 11 am to 10 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am to 11 pm, Sunday noon to 9 pm. You can also like them on Facebook.
