Return to Vinny’s

Last summer we went to Vinny’s Pizzeria in Herkimer, and I did a blog post. As I recall, they were about to close for two weeks. So I felt a little silly: here’s this great place to eat, but don’t go there, they’re closed. Last night, Steven and I decided to check Vinny’s out again.

I don’t want anybody to read anything into the fact that we waited so long between visits. The fact is, we don’t eat out as often as we used to. Last night we found ourselves shopping, and I was so hungry I couldn’t stand myself. Go home and cook? Oh, no, I couldn’t. Actually, Steven volunteered to cook, but I needed a blog post.

Vinny’s is just as good a place to eat as I recall. Good service, friendly atmosphere, yummy Italian food. Steven had lasagna, and I had manicotti. We both got garlic bread with our dinner, and we ended up taking enough home for a good lunch the next day.

As I write this, I realize it really has been a while since we went out to dinner. What’s that all about? I had a birthday last month, and we had an anniversary the month before that. Where are my dinners, Steven? Actually, I probably should not nag via blog post. Steven usually reads my stuff, but he will stop if all I do is kvetch. And in his defense, I have not wanted to go out as much either. I go to bed early week nights, and restaurants are usually so crowded on the weekends.

Be that as it may, we had a nice dinner on Wednesday. Vinny’s is good for dine in or take out. For more information, call 315-866-7961.

Dressing for Dinner

I thought my Friday nonsense was getting out of hand, so I determined to do something blog-worthy on Thursday. All I managed was to go to dinner at Applebee’s. Regular readers (both of them) know I don’t usually blog about chains. Still, I rationalized, this particular Applebee’s is in the Mohawk Valley. As I sit here writing this (rough draft in my notebook in the break room before work), I think: I will compromise between nonsense and business by entertaining you (I hope) with my gyrations getting ready. In other words: welcome to another Lame Post Friday.

Following my after-work shower, I looked for something to wear. I don’t have a lot of clothes that fit since I lost weight. Most of my skirts still fit. I usually wear them with long johns or leggings instead of pantyhose. However, since I no longer wear pantyhose to work, I will occasionally wear a pair after work, especially if I’m trying to keep my long johns clean for the weekend, which I am.

A side note here: I once worked with a rather obnoxious girl who would sniff, “I wear tights.” In fact, the package mine came in was labelled “Microfiber Tights.” It’s all pantyhose to me.

I grabbed a black pair at first, then noticed my sexy (or do I flatter myself?) silver pair.

“Hey, should I be sexy?” I asked my husband.

“Sure.” Of course his line should have been, “You’re always sexy,” but husbands do not always know their lines. He is a very good husband in other respects.

Pantyhose on, I searched for my black velvet skirt. It’s not a mini skirt, but at knee length, the pantyhose would show. I modeled a blouse for Steven. He approved, but I decided it needed ironing. I was not about to go that far. I settled on a green top which was not exactly low cut, then pondered my jewelry choices.

I have to say, this was the most fun I’ve had getting dressed in a long time. I even wore nice shoes, with a bit of a heel. I was ready for dinner with the hubby.

The only sad thing was we could not sit at one of my favorite tables, the tall ones in the bar area. I suggested we sit at the bar, but Steven did not want to. The hostess offered a booth in the bar area. We accepted, but I must say, it was a real compromise on my mental picture of the evening. It is difficult to look sexy, or even dignified sliding into and out of a booth, especially when the seats are real sinky downy, which these were. The sinky downy quality, while comfortable, also made the table a little taller on me than I like. However, these were minor discomforts. We were prepared to enjoy our meal.

We took advantage of the “2 for $20” special. I indulged in a Perfect Margarita, while Steven had coffee. Our appetizer was Potato Twists, which was new. My entree, Bruschetta Chicken, was also new. Steven rather boringly had Chicken Tenders, which is what he usually gets. Applebee’s does make tasty Chicken Tenders. It was a satisfying dinner; for once we were too stuffed for Dessert Shooters. The food and service were both very good.

It was a fun evening. I did not feel that my glamorous outfit was wasted. As a side note, we are headed to Vermont this weekend (as soon as I finish this post, in fact), so my next few posts may not have that Mohawk Valley flair. But stay tuned; I won’t be away from home for long.

Breakfast Buffet

I don’t usually plug chains in my blog; I like to go for the local flavor. In general the local stuff is just more interesting. However, I would like to give a shout out to Ponderosa in Herkimer, NY.

Steven and I usually avoid buffets (Chinese buffets being the exception), because I eat too much. So does Steven, but he’s weighed the exact same amount for the 20+ years I’ve been with him. All he suffers is temporary discomfort. I have to spend another two weeks on the South Beach Diet.

However, I saw an ad that Ponderosa was offering free breakfast buffet to first responders Sept. 10 and 11. I think that is a great thing to do. I want to support a business that does a thing like that. So I hope by giving a shout out to Ponderosa, I’m also giving a shout out to first responders. Oh, full disclosure: the ad also had a sweet coupon for buy one get one 50% off for the breakfast buffet.

For these very good reasons, on Saturday Steven and I made our way to the corner of State and King streets. We found that the service was friendly and the food was good. I have not been to a breakfast buffet in a long time. I refrained from taking six sausage links, as I had been known to do in my young and foolish days. I really don’t need to do “all you can eat,” because I can eat quite a lot. I prefer to think of it as “all you care to eat.”

We let the girl who took our money know we appreciated their deal for first responders, and we filled out a comment card repeating the sentiment. I like to encourage businesses who give back. And I appreciate first responders. They have a difficult, necessary job. I encourage all area first responders to take advantage of the breakfast buffet next weekend at the Ponderosa. I checked it out for you. It’s pretty good.

A Return to Crazy Otto’s

One of the goodies I got with my DARE 5K registration (I know, you thought I was all done talking about the DARE 5K) was a gift certificate for breakfast at Crazy Otto’s Empire Diner in Herkimer. Accordingly, my sister Diane, niece Camille, husband Steven and I went to 100 W. Albany St. Sunday morning.

Tommy had returned to Liverpool on Saturday. For those of you just tuning in, Tommy is my nephew who ran the DARE 5K with me. OK, ahead of me. He’s 13 and athletic. OK, no more about the DARE 5K this post. Diane used Tommy’s certificate, with his gracious permission. They only wanted us to use one at a time, so I will be forced to return to Crazy Otto’s for another breakfast at some future date. Oh, the sacrifices.

While the rest of us perused our menus, Steven finally located our Georgia license plate on the ceiling. In addition to many movie posters and memorabilia, Crazy Otto’s has license plates from all over the country on the walls and ceiling. We had donated our Georgia plate after noticing they did not have one, and received a discount on our meal the day we did.

I decided to get a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on flat bread. Steven ordered bacon and poached eggs on pancakes. The waitress warned him the bacon would be between the pancakes.

“A lot of people think we forgot their bacon,” she said. Steven was OK with that.

Camille wanted scrambled eggs and toast with butter. Diane ordered a ham and cheese omelet.

“That’s very South Beach-y,” I told her. “If you don’t get toast.”

“I want the toast,” she said. She decided on sourdough, which I told her was also approved by the South Beach Diet. I’m a fan of the South Beach Diet.

A toddler at a nearby table started screaming about something.

“I’m always relieved when it’s not Cami making the most noise,” Diane confided.

Actually, everybody at our table was very well behaved, even me. We enjoyed our breakfast very much. As always, the food was delicious and the service good. I’ve blogged about Crazy Otto’s before, but I thought they rated another post. It’s a fun place to eat, and I was glad to bring my out of town visitors there. Main Moon Monday

Monday Steven and I were on a mission to all the area Dollar Stores. What we were seeking is unimportant; we were unsuccessful. We ended up hungry and in Ilion. That was when we found the Main Moon Buffet at 40 Central Plaza.

I think a buffet is a wonderful way to eat Chinese food, because you can get a little taste of everything. This is a good buffet with plenty of variety. They have all my usual favorites, hot and sour soup, General Tso’s chicken, cream cheese wontons, plus a few things I’d never tried (have now). They also have sushi. The wasabi will clear your sinuses! I finished up with a small dish of ice cream.

The Main Moon also offers a full menu for eat in or take out. Carry out buffet is available. Hours are Monday through Thursday 11 am to 10:30 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am to 11:30 pm, Sunday noon to 10 pm. Telephone is 315-895-7404/7405. You can like them on Facebook.

This has been a short post, but how much do I need to say about a Chinese buffet? The food was yummy, the service was good. I’ll be back!

Fueling Up for a Great Day

Steven has already been on Facebook posting what a great day we had on Saturday. I think it was actually good for multiple blog posts. I’ll start with breakfast at Donna’s Diner.

We were heading to Little Falls for Canalfest, and I needed sustenance. I suggested Donna’s Diner, 5616 State Route 5, Herkimer, as being right on the way. We’ve eaten there before, but had not been there lately. The diner is located right next to our vet, so we’re usually out that way with Tabby. I’ve heard that in France they love dogs so much you can bring a dog into the fanciest restaurant, but I imagine they frown on such practices in the Mohawk Valley.

I had conceived the idea of going out for breakfast Friday when I got a sudden craving for bacon. We don’t buy bacon every week the way we used to, as I prefer a healthier, lower calorie lifestyle. But an occasional serving of bacon enhances my quality of life. I almost ignored the craving, however, when I saw one of the specials was sausage, egg and cheese on a hard roll with home fries. Breakfast sandwiches are my favorite. I finally opted for bacon, egg and cheese on a hard roll, no potatoes. I figured I’d have the opportunity to consume more calories at Canalfest, so I ought to pace myself. Steven ordered eggs over medium with bacon, home fries and Texas toast. That gave me the opportunity to sample the potatoes and see what I was missing. Yum! I may be forced to get them next time.

As we waited for our food I noticed a framed newspaper clipping from the Telegram Leader dated March 2, 1993. It said the former Jessica’s Restaurant had re-opened under new management as Donna’s Diner with Donna Graham as owner. I made a note of that bit of history. Then I admired a number of historic photos of the area. I love old pictures. I couldn’t study them all, though, or the other diners may have thought I was studying them. I would not wish to cause offense.

It was a wonderful breakfast and set us right up to enjoy the rest of our day, which I will blog about in the coming week. For more information about Donna’s Diner call 866-1483.

Good Eats on a Tuesday

Tuesday Steven and I decided to try Sorrento’s in Ilion again. We had previously attempted to dine there on a Friday, but they were too busy (I believe I mentioned it in a blog post). We thought we’d have better luck on a Tuesday. We were right.

“Two for dinner? Dine in?” asked the waiter at the podium when we walked in.

“Yes,” I said. “We want gracious dining surroundings.” That amused him.

The dining room is gracious. I once again admired a painting of a man I presume to be the patriarch of the family standing in what looks like an old fashioned mom and pop grocery. I also like a family tree made of photos pasted on a picture of a tree. I always think I might steal the idea and make one of my family as a Christmas present for my Mom and Dad (don’t tell them).

We ordered drinks — decaf coffee for me and regular for Steve — and heard the specials. I was especially tempted by an appetizer with eggplant, ricotta cheese and proscuitto. When the waiter came back to take our order I ordered a Chicken Francaise Sandwich with Pasta Salad while Steven ordered a Chicken Bacon Wrap with Fries. If the waiter had not asked did we want the eggplant appetizer, I would not have succumbed to temptation, but he did, and I did. I was not sorry. It was delicious. As with many appetizers, it could have been a meal in itself.

Steven managed to eat his whole sandwich and some of his fries. I ate half my sandwich and a little of my salad. It was a good salad, with black olives and little bits of ham and pepperoni. I look forward to enjoying my leftovers. The coffee was good, too. I don’t usually notice the coffee in particular, but this was quite tasty, especially for decaf. I had forgone my usual glass of wine with dinner. I’ll have to remember to do that the next time I dine at Sorrento’s. On a weekday. Or remembering to make a reservation.

Sorrento’s is located at 85 Central Ave., Ilion, NY, 315-894-9991. They are open Monday to Thursday 11 am to 10 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am to 11 pm, Sunday noon to 9 pm. You can also like them on Facebook.
