It’s Thursday: I Thunk

Did I ever institute a feature called Thunky Thursday?  I know I have described some of my runs as thunky (computers seem to think that is not a word, but I know otherwise).  I am afraid if I go back and look, I will get bogged down re-reading old blogs, wondering what I wrote x many years ago.  I was recently wished happy anniversary from WordPress (I thought they called it a blogoversary, but maybe I made that word up).  Thirteen years.  Who knew?

Now I am getting bogged down anyways, and I had meant to make a Running Commentary post.  I bog very easily these days. That could be another reason I am not running as often as I would like.  However, I managed a run today.  It was not a great run, but they don’t all have to be great.  The important thing is to do it.

I Mapped My Run with the app on my smarter than me phone, but it did not make such a nice picture.  You’ll have that on the shorter runs.

I’ll work on more interesting shapes as I make longer runs, I hope.

Earlier today, as I thought I would go for a run and make a Running Commentary blog post, I thought about calling it Thunky Thursday.  Of course all my runs are not thunky, but I thought after a full day’s work in the heat (no AC at my work), it was a pretty good bet I would.  And sure enough I did.  Thunk, thunk, thunk, down the sidewalk, wondering if I could make it for 20 minutes.  I am up to 33 minutes on my weekend runs, but I ask far less of myself during the week.

The best part of my run was my recovery beverage of chocolate milk.  My milk was one day beyond its Best By date, so I had my doubts, but it was OK.  I put in lots of Hershey’s Special Dark and savored it.  The run, as you can see, was 20 minutes.  I have no problem with building up slowly.  I think last year at this time, or maybe a month later, I was having Two Mile Tuesday and even Three Mile Thursday.  As regular readers know, I like alliteration.

I also like making on time blog posts, which I just did.  Who’d’a thunk it?

I Thunk It’s Thursday

The headline is not a typo; I really did thunk today.

I had not been running since Sunday, not a good idea when the Boilermaker 15K is a mere month away.  I blame the Canadian wildfires, which have rendered the skies such a freaky sepia tone. With my breathing problems, I did not care to go out there and huff and puff.  I know, I could have stayed inside and run in place on the mini-tramp.  I felt too  tired.  Judge me if you choose.

Today I felt equally tired, but the air was so much more clear!  There was blue sky and clouds.  The sun looked like the sun, not that scary orange disc!  How could I not run?

And yet my body rebelled.  My knees hurt, my hip joint felt out if whack.  I questioned my ability to run 15Ks in July or even at all ever.  So I said to myself, Just Try.  For one reason, I had to do laundry. What else was I going to do while the washer washed?  Just Try, I repeated to myself as I got changed into running clothes.  Once I had the sports bras on, I knew I would get out there and do something.

A few steps down the sidewalk, I felt like, hey! I can so run!  I’m going to do this!  That feeling lasted to the corner, which was only about three houses away.  No matter.  I had started;  I would persevere.

Persevere I did.  I ran slow.  I ran thunkily (autocorrect seems to believe that is a word now).  I huffed and puffed.  I coaxed myself on a little at a time.  Just get to that truck that’s parked over the sidewalk.  Just get to the corner.  I looked at my Garmin and calculated how much further would make one mile.  .73…  .54…  .39…

My first (OK, my only) mile was 13:30.  That is really not too bad for me.  Could I make it to 20 minutes?  I kept thunking. Maybe a 17 minute run would be acceptable. By virtue of running past my house to the corner and back to the house, I made it to 20.  Score!

My hip was hurting a bit, so I cut my cool-down walk short.  I had a problem with that hip about a year ago and did not run for a month.  Then again, perhaps I could have started running again sooner.  I’m no expert on hip joints.

I felt happy and relieved that I ran.  I am also happy that I did laundry. Now I don’t have to have Dirty Pants Friday.  Um, not that I would ever do that.

Will I Have the Last Laugh?

I meant to make a post using more pictures taken on a recent walk, but those pictures are on my phone and here I am on my Tablet.  Still, the phone is on the coffee table.  I could pick it up and look…

Or not.  My only purpose now is to make a Post-Rehearsal Post.  And I might even eat an ice cream cone out of the freezer before I do so.

It is not actually chocolate running down this head.

I put in an unrelated picture to show the passage of time while I ate ice cream.  I do not remember if I actually used this picture to give a shout-out to Yettys Pizza and Pasta of Herkimer, NY.  I must look at my past posts and make sure I have done so.

Did somebody say murder mystery?

I scrolled through my Media Library till I found a picture of a murder mystery, because the rehearsal I was at was for a murder mystery: He Laughed Himself to Death.  It will be presented on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Herkimer Elks Lodge, to benefit Herkimer County Historical Society.

I just now copied this from Facebook.

Now I have given a proper shout-out to the murder mystery.   I am going to bill this as a Non-Sequitur Thursday Post,  because I have been a little all over the place.  If only I could think of a sufficiently random headline, my life would be perfect.

I Think Thunk is a Word

I was going to make a Running Commentary Post and call it The Thursday Thunk. I was pretty sure that would describe my run pretty accurately. I was right. It is good to be gainfully employed, but it tends to put a damper on my evening activities. I am sure many of you have similar issues.

It was a nice day, not too humid, not too hot, sunny, pleasant. After two days of not running and rain predicted for tomorrow (although we all know how that goes) (however, in this case, my bunions agree) (but I digress), I knew it would be a good idea to get myself out there. I got into running gear, threw a load of laundry in the washer (my favorite multi-task) and set out.

And thunk I did. Oh was I slow! Did I ever shuffle! But I went, and I kept going. I had thought to go on a different route than what I ran Monday, but I also wanted to cross as few busy streets as possible. Additionally, I prefer to stay left side facing traffic, even on the sidewalk. It makes it easier if I do want to detour onto the road.

I saw a few things of note: a metal sculpture of a frog on a bicycle, various colored irises (my own have not bloomed yet, but I have hopes), a few people working on home improvements. I did not pet any dogs, alas, although I greeted a few pedestrians.

It was not easy, but I made my run last 20 minutes, then took a ten minute cool-down walk. With my longer weekend runs, I think I will be in OK shape for the Pride Stride 5K in Little Falls, NY June 12. It is part of a whole event. I should write a whole blog post about that (preview of coming attractions).

In the meantime, I am over 300 words. Not bad for a Thunky Thursday.
