I Make Some Plans, I Make a Post

Hello and welcome to another post from the couch.  I was having an easier time getting around yesterday, so naturally I overdid it, trying to get a few things done around my house (I was not particularly successful). I am keeping quieter today and will once again make use of my Media Library to share a few pictures and daydream about what I am going to do when I am once again mobile.

Mmmmm…. fresh basil.

I’m afraid I have to kiss my container garden dreams good-bye for this year.  All the greenhouses around here are having big sales to get rid of the rest of their plants.  This is some basil from 2017.  I LOOOOVE fresh pesto.

Play ball!

Here is something I might be able to do yet: attend a game of the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs in Little Falls, NY.  I forget how long the season lasts. I will have to find out.

The lawn may have won, but I taught that tree a thing or two!

Yes, I will need to do some things in my back and front yards.  I like to say, I fought the lawn and the lawn won, but I have not even been in fighting condition lately.  But just you wait, lawn!

This desirable property is in move-in condition.

Here is something I will be able to do in my lawn: put up non-plant decorations.  I have birdhouses, and a couple of metal frogs.

And so I make my little plans, as well as my little blog posts.  Once again, I thank you for tuning in.

Another Post from the Couch

On the brighter side, I am ten-finger typing on my Chromebook.  Yes, there are a lot of brighter sides and I try to concentrate on them.  However, I have not been out on a Mohawk Valley Adventure for a while now.  In the meantime, I see a lot of things I am missing on Facebook.  Have I got the dreaded FOMO, Fear Of Missing Out?  There is no point in being afraid I might miss out; I AM missing out.  But that is OK, because, after all, one can’t do everything.

I did have a nice outfit.

This is from June 2021, just before I went to Little Falls, NY to run the Pride Stride 5K.  Midway through May I figured I would have to give it a miss this year, but I hoped to partake of some of the Pride festivities going on in Little Falls this weekend.  Alas, I did not, but I give them a shout-out.  Local readers, you should have been there; if not, watch for it next year!

Local music? Yes, please!

I think I mentioned recently how I miss going to Fratello’s Pizzeria in Frankfort to hear talented musicians, such as Phil Arcuri, pictured above.

Great little shop!

And then there is shopping.  To Niche Their Own in Herkimer is a delightful place.  I love to stop in there and look at all the stuff by local artisans.  I usually leave with a pair of earrings, a stuffed bat or bear, or a beautiful artificial flower.

So I have many plans for when I am mobile once again.  In the meantime, I hope my blog posts entertain.

Past Views and Maybe a Preview

I did say I was going to have a Throwback Thursday Post today, which will make a nice change from whining about how I can’t have any Mohawk Valley Adventures these days.  I guess if I really wanted to give my readers a break, I would not even have mentioned it.  What am I, always fishing for sympathy?  Just ignore me.

Flowers for Cynthia?

A shot from my container garden of 2017.  I do not entirely despair of having a container garden this year, because there is no point in giving in to despair.  We do what we can do, after all.

Play ball!

Now there is something I have not done in years:  Go to a Diamond Dawgs baseball game in Little Falls, NY.  It seems every year I say I am going to go to a game, and every year I wimp out.  I don’t mind doing many things by myself, but it really is more fun to go to a game with a group of friends.

Look at all those blooms!

Here is my rhododendron in 2019.  You can see all the forget-me-nots at the bottom.  At least there are some blossoms in my year, although I am not able to go outside and get any pictures today (oh dear, there I go again, alluding to my stupid problems).

I love music!

Something else I have not done in a long time is go to hear music at Fratello’s Pizzeria in Frankfort.  This is Matt Grainger in 2021.

I hope this post turns out to be a Preview of Coming Attractions as well as a Throwback Thursday.  Container gardens, baseball games, local music, these are all things I would like to get back to.  Will I be able to? If so, how soon?  I like to say a little uncertainty adds interest to my Thursday.  In this case, I confess I would prefer to get my interest elsewhere, but I must not get back to whining again.  At least I have made a blog post of over 300 words.  Yay me?

Thank You, Nonna Maria!

I had been craving a wood-fired pizza for some time.  I also had been wanting to try Nonna Marie Wood Fired Oven at Stone Mill, which I had heard raves about.  How perfect, then, that my way home from Canajoharie, NY on Friday (perhaps you read my blog post about the Shakespeare thing), took me right by Little Falls!  A couple of turns, and there I was, ready to partake.

I should have gotten a shot of the sign outside. Silly me.

I ordered the Vegetarian, with cherry tomatoes, roasted peppers, mushrooms, onions, mozzarella, and basil.  I got it to go, since by then I did not have far to, you know, go.

Looks like a place for a couple to sit for a photo op.

I did not have long to wait, but long enough to notice a picture on the counter advertising a sandwich that looked really good.  I told the workers I would need to come back to try it.

Here’s a clearer picture.

I will probably have to make multiple trips, because there are a few other pizzas on the menu I would like to try as well.  Luckily, Little Falls is one of Mohawk Valley Girls favorite destinations.

Nonna Maria’s is located at 410 Canal Place, Little Falls, NY.

Murals and Selfies, It’s Waste Not Want Not Wednesday

I planned last week to make a Waste Not Want Not Wednesday post when I came out of New 2 You Consignments in Ilion, NY and saw the mural painted on a wall opposite.

So artistic!

I believe they have had community events in that space.  I will have to watch when they will have more.  It will make for a good blog post.  Having taken one good picture, I had to look out for more.  That was where I didn’t get so lucky.  Then I had an opportunity to wear one of the new earrings I got at The Mustard Seed in Little Falls. Perhaps you read my blog post about them.  As regular readers may recall, I like to wear three different earrings.  It is a thing with me.

I can’t pretend I take a good selfie, but I do my best with what nature gave me.

Yesterday was the vote for the school board budget.  It is one’s civic duty to vote.  We do not hear much about duty these days, but it used to be a big deal. In the Agatha Christie books I delight in reading, the characters can usually get each other to do things by telling them it is their duty.  So I told myself it was my duty and went to the Junior/Senior High School, where voting took place.  A nice police officer opened the door for me.  I laughed, because there was a Visitor’s Door and a Student’s Door both opening into the same hallway.

“The teachers want us to vote yes, right?”  I asked a teacher-looking person as I walked into a library.  He assured me they did, and I said I would do what the teachers wanted.

“Unlike what you did in elementary school,” he speculated.

On the other side, I was wearing the butterfly earring again.

I took a selfie with my I Voted sticker.  Steve and I used to take an ussie with our stickers, so I thought I would continue the tradition.  I also continued the tradition of putting the sticker in the TV Journal.  Of course the selfie isn’t as fun as the ussie, but one does what one can.

See? Much more fun with two!

This is from November 2018.  Steven and I did have fun.

Mustard Seed to the Rescue!

Yesterday I stopped for a few groceries at Hannaford.  As I was getting some deli meat and cheese, I thought how good it would taste on artisan bread from Fox Tale Artisan Bakery in Little Falls.  Actually, I could not remember the name of the place other than Fox.  What I thought was, “I need to get some of that Fox bread for this!”  I impulsively drove to Little Falls, NY.

Taken on a previous visit.

And found out they are only open on weekends.  Serves me right for not checking first.  To cheer myself up, I went next door to the Mustard Seed, always a favorite stop.  I ha a delightful conversation with one of the owners and purchased a lovely pair of monarch butterfly earrings.  I mentioned that I don’t often wear orange, and she said she often wore black.  Oh yes, they would definitely brighten up a black dress or top.

“They would go good with purple, too,” I said.  I wear a lot of purple. Come to think of it, I do have a couple of orange tops.  Alas, today I put on pink, so I cannot wear my new earrings and take a selfie.  Then again, I am not as beautiful as I say I am, so selfies are not so great.

The bumblebee is the mascot of the Mustard Seed.

I will return to Fox Tales Artisan Bakery, perhaps as soon as this weekend.  They are located at 407 Canal Place, Little Falls, NY, phone number 315-508-5021.  The Mustard Seed is at 401 Canal Place, phone number 315-823-0718.  In addition to earrings and conversation, you can get scents, pottery, spice blends, gluten-free baked goods and treats, and more.

Pre-Breakfast Post

I wussed out on Wednesday, not making my post till Thursday morning.  I’m thinking nobody is surprised, least of all me.  Now I am typing in haste (ten-finger typing, which is my usual thing these days), because I am meeting my Elks friends at Ann Street Deli in Little Falls, NY for breakfast.  I am hungry!  And I could use some coffee or tea.

Great for breakfast and lunch!

I easily found this picture in my Media Library.  I took it the last time we had breakfast there.  Note the crappy lump of snow in front.  The snow that is left looks crappy and dirty, and I for one am hoping no more falls to whiten it up.  However, Mother Nature rarely takes any of our hopes under advisement.

Yesterday was supposed to be the last warm day for a while, so I took advantage of the bare roads and sidewalks for a run.  I actually managed to stay on the sidewalks for most of the time, which is what I prefer to do.  You can’t count on cars slowing down.  Later on, when I took a walk, it was raining.  I had to walk down State Street, or Route 5 as it is more commonly known.  The sidewalks were muddy, and cars zoomed through the puddles, splashing wherever it landed.  Humph.  Just my little complaint of the day.  Don’t mind me.

My plans for today are to clean my house and perhaps do a Throwback Thursday blog post.  I need to write the conclusion for my murder mystery, which begins rehearsals Sunday (preview of coming attractions).  But I feel pleased I have done a blog post today of over 250 words.  250 entertaining words?  My dear readers are the judge of that.

Late Slacker Saturday, but Shout-Out for the Cats!

This will be a late Slacker Saturday post and no promises about a Sunday blog post.  I am on my second cup of coffee, which should help matters, but as the late great Fats Waller said, One never knows, do one?

Drink coffee, write. Only two of my goals for today.

I thought I would throw in a coffee cup as an illustration.  I purchased this one at Athenix Books and Brews, just to throw in another shout-out to one of my favorite local businesses.  I got the ghostie pen holder there too (should it be “ghosty” or “ghostie”?  My computer thinks both are wrong.  I suppose I could say “ghostly,” but I think my little guy is too cute for that) (But I digress).

Yesterday I did a few things and reminded myself to make a blog post, even if it was a Slacker Saturday post.  Alas, I did not get to it.  I wrote my weekly post cards and walked them to the post office (that makes it sound like they walked along with me, perhaps on little post card leashes) (why did auto-correct capitalize “Little”?).  A little later (left it lowercase that time) I went to a wine tasting at Valley Wine and Liquor (another shout-out!), then brought an afghan to Mohawk American Legion, where I donated it to the HALO Lucky Paws Auction for Sunday (today!).

HALO (and here we come to the real shout-out of the post) is the Helping Animals Live Organization.  This is the 17th Lucky Paws Auction.  I have attended many in years past and won great stuff.  They get tons of great donations: baskets for any interest, gift cards from area businesses, and an afghan from me!  It takes place today, Sunday March 8 at the Mohawk American Legion, 45 West Main St., Mohawk, NY, with viewing beginning at 11 a.m. and drawings beginning at 2 p.m.  If any local readers read this in time, I encourage you to attend!

I Venture to Get a T-Shirt

Athenix Books and Brews was not the only stop I made in Little Falls yesterday.  I also strolled down Main Street to Venture Fourth, the new outdoor store.  I am not really an outdoorsy person, no hiking or rock climbing for me.  But I like this store and I like the owners, a husband and wife team.  I had a nice conversation with the husband at Christmas time when I found a couple of small gifts for family members.  When I saw on Facebook they were having a sale on t-shirts, I thought I would have to have one.

Come on in!

I did not have far down Main Street to walk to find my goal. When I walked in, I saw the t-shirts I wanted right away. The shirts were offered by Preserve Our Past, and each purchase directly supported efforts to preserve significant historic buildings and structures in Little Falls.

What a great graphic!

Additionally, the shirt made a play on words!  Little Falls is known as Rock City, there are some great spots for rock climbing, and the place does, in fact, rock.  How could I resist?
Venture Fourth is located at 590 E. Main St., Little Falls, NY, phone number 315-983-8271.  I encourage you to stop by, and to follow them on Facebook.

Another Coffee Adventure!

I thought of this title yesterday, as I was writing my blog post, because I remembered that Athenix Books and Brews in Little Falls, NY, was opening the Brews component on Feb. 26.  I needed to get there soon and make a blog post about it!  I drank tea for my first cuppa at home this morning, then after completing a couple of other chores and errands, I headed to Little Falls.

Lots of choices!

I opted for a regular dark roast coffee with whole milk.  I couldn’t resist also getting an Oreo brownie.  I sat at a tall table wrote a few more lines on my murder mystery (preview of coming attractions)  while I enjoyed my treat.  As I sat there I noticed that it looked as if there were letters on the wood floor.  I could not make out what they were supposed to be until I got up and realized I had been looking at them upside down.  Normally I can read upside down, but I failed this morning.

It says Athenix!

I was very impressed with the craftsmanship.  The whole place looks wonderful to me.  Nick mentioned he had gotten a one star review that called the floors unfinished and not modern.  Another customer and I asserted that we love them.  They have character and add to the ambiance.

Cozy!

I sat at a tall table, but there are also some soft chairs and sofas to lounge on while you enjoy your beverage.  I plan to make this a regular stop.  I will sit at a table or one of the cushy chairs, sip my coffee or tea and write!

Athenix Books and Brews is located at 624 E. Main St., Little Falls, NY.  You can follow them on Facebook.
