Help from Pizza and a Friend

I was going to just give up and declare this week Late Post Week when I noticed how low the battery on my phone is. Will I have time to plug it in and get it to 100 percent in AND be able to make a blog post in the morning? I suppose a little suspense will add interest to my day.

Regular readers (I think I still have some) may be wondering why I did not go to the library and make my blog post, as I spoke of doing this morning (when I made yesterday’s post). It is too long and whiny a story for me to share. Also, I don’t come out of it looking very good.

So I guess this is a true Wuss-out Wednesday Post. Hmm… Maybe I could yet salvage something.

At one point earlier this evening I texted my friend Kim and told her I was having a HORRIBLE day (I daresay I was indulging in hyperbole). She suggested ordering food and watching a movie. Brilliant!

While she got ready to come over, I called Salvatore’s Pizzeria in Herkimer and ordered a cheese pizza and chicken wings Siciliano. When Kim arrived, we popped in “Clue: The Movie” (I put it in quotation marks because I do not know how to do italics on my phone). I craved the silliness factor of the movie.

I’ll be honest: The evening was not a miraculous cure-all. Why can’t I have a miraculous cure-all? No matter. I can’t and that’s all. I was feeling better after good food, a few laughs, and most of all time with a friend.

Full disclosure:. Kim was not the only one I reached out to. I also called my parents for some good advice and got it as usual. Additionally I called the Veteran’s Crisis Hotline and am on my way to getting more help. I mention the last to add my little bit to erasing the stigma attached to needing help with our mental health.

And I guess the stigma does exist, because I am quite hesitant now to publish this post. People I know may read it! Then again, why worry? In the first place, my blog is probably not as widely read as all that. In the second place, a lot of my friends and family would probably say, “Oh Cindy, we knew you needed help!”

I’ll Give You a Pizza My Mind

How about another cooking post, because quite frankly, I ain’t got much. I did leave the house today, but only to go grocery shopping, and it was not memorable. I spent most of the afternoon knitting and watching Snapped.

I almost didn’t cook anything, because I sat on the couch feeling Too Damn Tired. However, once I got out to the kitchen and got started, it wasn’t too bad.

My plan was to make flat bread pizzas. I had purchased whole wheat tortillas for the purpose. I started by chopping up some rainbow peppers I found on sale at the grocery store. I put them in a frying pan to saute, adding some sliced fresh mushrooms.

While they fried, I peeled and crushed some garlic. After it sat for 15 minutes, breathing or whatever it’s supposed to do (I read somewhere that’s how it reaches its full cancer-fighting potential), I whirred it in the blender with some oil, basil, and oregano. I spread this mixture on the flat bread in lieu of sauce.

In addition to the peppers and mushrooms, I topped the pizzas with pepperoni, black olives, and mozzarella. I sliced the olives and grated the cheese while the garlic breathed.

I baked two pizzas at 350 degrees for 10 minutes. They turned out yummy. I have not been cooking much lately, because I have been too lazy. Uh, I mean tired. I kind of miss chopping, mixing, stirring, etc. Perhaps my recipes are not the most exciting of blog posts, but at least it makes a change from whining about how I don’t have enough to say. As always, I thank you for tuning in.

I Gotta Have My Music!

My husband, Steve, and I have been greatly enjoying our usual Wednesday thing of going to Fratello’s Pizzeria in Frankfort, NY, to enjoy yummy food and great music. Last night we enjoyed one of our favorites, Phillip Arcuri.

Last night when we walked in, there were a number of people sitting at the bar, our favorite place to sit. However, a man graciously agreed to move one seat down freeing up two seats in a row. Steve’s view of the musician was a little obscured, but he managed to peep around and could of course hear perfectly well.

We decided on pizza and wings but had some discussion on pizza toppings and wing sauce. For pizza we got garlic with pepperoni and black olives. For wings, I was interested in Buffalo Garlic but worried they might be too spicy. Our favorite bartender Toni said if we wanted less spicy, Barbecue, Garlic or Garlic Parmesan were better choices. Still, I wanted to try to Buffalo Garlic and Steven said OK.

“The hot stuff makes his bald spot sweat,” I explained to our new friend, who had also taken part in the discussion. “As for me, I’m going to have another hot flash any minute, so it really doesn’t matter.”

“You might as well add to it,” he agreed.

The wings were spicy, but after we asked for celery and bleu cheese (which we should have ordered in the first place; I love celery and bleu cheese), all was well.

The music, of course, was wonderful. We sang along whenever possible and chair danced when we weren’t eating. I could see other people enjoying themselves as much.

Sometimes I think I would like to stay home and vegetate, but when I have a chance to take in the local music scene, how can I resist?

10K, Wine, and Fritz

I shall make a fast Scattered Saturday Post, just so as not to be late yet again. Full disclosure: I have had a little wine and will greatly enjoy to return to the sitting on the couch, knitting, television watching portion of the day.

I ran the 10K this morning, slowly. I wore my Garmin (actually my friend Jay’s Garmin, which he nicely long term loaned me), so I knew I was running faster than my normal pace. I guess everybody runs a little faster on race day. The run really took it out of me. I took a nap later this morning.

After the nap, I had some iced coffee and Gatorade, drinking double fisted, not mixed together. I almost forgot to write my weekly postcards but luckily remembered before pick-up time for the mail boxes in front of the post office. I walked there, then downtown, where some Herkimer Diamond Days festivities were happening.

A band was playing. My husband Steven and our friend Kim joined me. We purchased a slice at Enzo’s Pizza and carried it across to the End Zone for a glass of wine.

By the time we were ready to leave, Fritz’s Polka Band was playing. We danced to “Secret Agent Man” while I took a picture.

I’m afraid the picture did not turn out very well. I guess this is one of those Saturdays where the day is better than the blog post. You’ll have that. On the brighter side, I made a post! That is not a given these days. Thank you for tuning in.

Weight Loss Goals? What Weight Loss Goals?

The day after making a yummy salad with locally grown produce, we sent out for pizza, wings AND cookies from Salvatore’s Pizzeria in Herkimer. On the brighter side, I can give another shout-out to a local business.  On the darker side, my weight loss goals become merely weight loss daydreams.

It was Steven’s idea.  No, it really was!  I did not try very hard to dissuade him.  In my defense, Steven’s appetite is so capricious these days, when he actually gets a yen to eat something, I feel I ought to encourage it.  Additionally, we like to support a local business.  Stop laughing at me for rationalizing!  As if YOU never eat pizza (you know who you are).

Where was I?  Ah yes, feeling full and happy.  We got a small garlic pizza with sausage and black olives, chicken wings Siciliano, and two large chocolate chip cookies.  I had one slice of pizza and three wings, and, yes, I ate a cookie.  I make no promises regarding the leftovers.

We got delivery, which is always prompt and friendly.  Many of us have been sending out for food more often since the pandemic.  You can get that little frisson of virtue from supporting the local economy.  We are not sending out as often as we did in previous months, so I felt happy to do so today.

I am planning an extra long run tomorrow.  Additionally,  I still have a salad and other vegetables in my refrigerator.  I will get back on the path to my weight loss goals!  In the meantime,  I confess to having enjoyed this evening’s little detour.

Pre-Valentine Shenanigins

I guess we didn’t really have any shenanigans,  at least none worthy of the word, but we did have a pleasant evening.

I did not get Steven a Valentine’s Day present.  YET.  I still have time. But Steven set the standard and got me one.

Please excuse the busy background.

The wine box was from our Christmas present from my sister, Diane. The dinosaur is one we have had for a while.  I put him in the bag I bring to work yesterday, just for the amusement of the security guard that has to look in it.  This morning I left the house before Steven got out of bed, so I put the dinosaur by the coffee maker, to greet him.  So Steven thought it would look nice near my present.

A great name for rum!  The dinosaur likes it too!

I have been noticing this bottle in Valley Wine and Liquor in Herkimer for a while now.  I told Steven we needed it.  It will probably last us a long time, because we are more into wine than liquor, but what an appropriate bottle for Steve and Cindy Q.

After admiring the rum (but not sampling it yet), we went to Salvatore’s in Herkimer for dinner.  Steven won a large cheese pizza on a Facebook contest, so we got that.  We also got a shrimp appetizer from their special Valentine’s Day menu.  After looking at the entrees on that menu, I am seriously considering going back to Salvatore’s tomorrow.

My WordPress timestamp probably says it is Valentine’s Day already.  That is OK with me.  Dinosaur, present, dinner… I am feeling quite romantic already!

 

 

Pizza with Pesto on Tasty Tuesday

How about a Tasty Tuesday post instead of my usual Tired or Bad Attituesday?  I just made a yummy flat bread pizza and I think I can come up with 200 or so words about it.

Steven got me some nice flat bread last week, and over the weekend I had the idea of making a flat bread pizza.   Accordingly, I went to the store on Sunday and purchased Dino’s sausage (from Utica, NY; just to give my post some local flair), fresh mushrooms, and mozzarella cheese.  I lazily picked the washed and sliced mushrooms.  It did not seem to be much difference in price between that and the whole ones. I already had black olives and pesto.  The pesto was homemade: I made it in my blender with oil, basil, garlic and whatever else I felt like throwing in at the time (I don’t remember now what that was; this stuff keeps a long time in the fridge).

I cooked all the sausage on Sunday, knowing it would be good for more than one pizza, so I was all set in that respect today.  While the oven pre-heated, I grated mozzarella.  After spraying the pizza pan with no-stick, I put the flat bread on it and spread it with pesto.  I arranged sausage and mushrooms, sliced the black olives over them, then covered the whole with cheese.  I baked it for ten minutes.

YUMMY!!!  My Sunday pizza was made with the same recipe, if you can call it that (I suppose in my blog I will call it what I like).  I’m not sure if I have shared this recipe before, but there is every chance I will share it again sometime.  Perhaps I will make some variations on the theme or maybe take pictures of the work in progress and the finished product.  As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

 

May Pizza!

Steven and I celebrated today’s extremely warm weather with a short walk and dinner out.  I had meant to make a Pedestrian Post and took my Tablet on the walk in hopes of finding some of them there May flowers to take pictures of.  That did not work out so well.  I tried to take a picture of two trees starting to get leaves, but all I could see on the Tablet was the reflection of my own stupid face. No, I did not have it in “selfie” mode;  it was the result of the bright sun on the black screen.  I think.  I did not continue to look at it, because the angle was really showing up my middle-age turkey neck.  I don’t mind getting old, but there is no reason to stare at some things.

The sun was bright and hot; shade and breeze were not plentiful, but what we encountered was appreciated.  No, I am NOT complaining.  I would have enjoyed authentic spring weather, but I’ll take summer.  I said we should sit out on the deck with a couple of beers, but we were hungry and going out to eat sounded really, really good.  I suggested Franco’s Pizza in Ilion.  I had been there for the first time on a recent Scattered Saturday, but Steven had never been.

The restaurant was not crowded, but a few people were ahead of us ordering at the counter.  That was OK, since we needed time to peruse the boards and decide what to get.  We were still debating when it was our turn, so the counter person was able to help the person behind us who was picking up an order.  We saw a few people picking up orders they had called in.  Maybe we’ll do that next time.

At last we decided on a small, thin crust garlic pizza with sausage and mushrooms with ten butter-garlic wings.  We split a bottle of Dasani.  We sat at a tall table and enjoyed the retro ’50’s decor as well as the sunshine coming through the large windows.   The food was delicious, and we brought home leftovers.  Pizza for breakfast, my favorite!

Yum, Not Lame

In lieu of my usual Friday Lame Post, I shall give a brief shout-out to a local business: Salvatore’s Pizzeria and Restaurant in Herkimer, NY.

Our original plan had been to go out for a fish fry, but I am, what a surprise, not feeling well.  Yes, I’m as sick of feeling this way as you are of hearing about it. Let’s not dwell on it, shall we?

It is Friday during Lent and I am kind of, sort of Catholic, so I didn’t want meat.  I suggested a large garlic pizza with peppers and mushrooms, and an order of calimari.  We don’t technically need a large pizza for just the two of us, but I like how thin the crust gets.  Then I get leftover pizza for breakfast.  Yum.

Delivery was astonishingly prompt.  It usually is from Salvatore’s.  That is one reason we often let them come to our rescue when we don’t feel like cooking or going out.  The other reason is, of course, yum.

Wow, I guess there’s not a whole lot else to say.  How embarrassing.  Then again, perhaps my readers would prefer to stop reading a silly blog and get back to enjoying their Friday.  I know I do (yes, yes, I’m writing not reading right now; don’t be didactic).  Happy Friday, everyone.

Salvatore’s: The Perfect Medication

The reason people self-medicate with food is that it almost always works, at least in the short term.  I’m actually not self-medicating with food right now, but I thought I’d lead with that as a semi-profound, arguable statement (but I hope nobody argues with me; I always lose arguments).  In fact, I am merely giving another shout-out to Salvatore’s Pizzeria and Restaurant in Herkimer, NY.

We really have been pretty good about not sending out for food lately.  We must fund our money, and I must watch my caloric intake.  However, sometimes you just need to treat yourself.  It is really a practical move as well.  We are getting garlic pizza and antipasto salad, and we will certainly have leftovers.  I can eat leftover pizza for breakfast and bring leftover salad for lunch.  What could be better?

Sometimes we go out to Salvatore’s and sit in their gracious dining room.  I do like to go out to eat.  However, one cannot go out to eat barefoot and bra-less, as I currently am (I shall not apologize if that has given you an unfortunate mental image, just get over yourself).

I have given shout-outs to Salvatore’s before, because the food is delicious and the service prompt.  I guess I don’t have a whole lot new to say about them.  However, it is Monday and I am tired. I’ll just hope the opening statement about self-medication adds enough interest to call this a post.  I hope my pizza gets here soon.  Happy Monday, everybody.
