Is My Mission to Dress as a Drag Queen?

My mission, if I choose to accept it, is to make a Lame Post Friday post on Friday. This tape will self-destruct… That was my little homage to Mission: Impossible, the TV series with Martin Landau, not the movies, which I have the opposite of desire to see.

And that was as far as I got last night. I bet Martin Landau never chose not to accept his mission. I guess that is where he and I differ.

In any case, here I sit on my couch, etc., etc., and I ain’t got much. Later today, my friend, Kim, and I will participate in the Mind Twist Media Arts and Entertainment Expo in Utica, NY. We will be representing Ilion Little Theatre. I spent part of last night figuring out a costume then un-painting and re-painting my toenails so they will match. I plan to wear my drag queen outfit from Fabulous and Fatal, that murder mystery we presented to benefit the Herkimer County Historical Society a few years ago.

I don’t know much about Mind Twist Media or the expo, but I copied the following from the Facebook Event: Artists and entertainers from all over Central New York meet to showcase their art. There will be tattoo artists, tarot readers, cosplayers, authors, film makers, musicians, food trucks, vendors, live glass blowing and chainsaw art demonstrations. Cosplay contest at 4:00, Adults and children’s categories.

The event will take place at 220 Memorial Parkway, Utica, NY, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $5, but FREE if you come in costume!

So my blog post veered from lame to plugging a local event. I find that appropriate for a post that started on Friday and ended on Saturday.

Where Was I on Saturday?

So I missed Thursday, posted lame on Friday, then missed Saturday. Right down the line, I did better earlier in the week than later. Not that I did so hot earlier last week, now that I think about it. I guess I have set the bar for myself kind of low.

Anyways, here I am, lounged on my couch on Sunday morning, pecking in one letter at a time with the stylus, trying to make some post, any post, for reasons I feel unable to articulate.

Yesterday (Saturday), I went for a walk, since I still feel unable to run. Later, our friend Kim picked up Steve and me, and we went to the Pride festivities in Little Falls, NY. We enjoyed some musical performances from a few fabulously dressed Queens, and I purchased a rainbow fan.

Then we adjourned to Rock Valley Brewing, where we ordered drinks. After dithering with my phone for a few minutes, I just walked over to Mangia Macrina’s to get a wood-fired pizza. Previously I have ordered by text, but yesterday I was so indecisive, I thought in-person was a better way to go.

Returning to Herkimer, I remembered that there was a wine tasting at Valley Wine and Liquors, so we made a quick stop. I love wine tastings.

I realize that I could easily have made a Scattered Saturday Post when we got home. Instead, I watched a DVR’d episode of Svengoolie. In my defense, Vincent Price.

So here is my Saturday post, posted Sunday morning. Will I make my Sunday post on Sunday? A little suspense adds interest to my day.

If Only Dithering Burned Calories!

To run or not to run… is not really the question. How’s that for hacking Shakespeare? I guess it’s kind of a cliche, but here is something else that has become something of a cliche (I don’t know how to add an accent, so my computer is underlining it. How embarrassing) at least in the context of this blog: I am dithering.

The subject of my dithering is the Reindeer Run 5K, part of the Christmas in Little Falls festivities this Saturday. I have participated for several years. It is a very run run: nice people, interesting course (I love Little Falls), and you end up at Ed & Bud’s, where you can get a Tom & Jerry, a traditional Christmas drink. Why, you may well ask, am I dithering?

Well, sad to admit, I have not been running enough. I have been running; I’m not a complete slug. However, it has only been maybe three times a week: Saturday, Sunday and usually Wednesday. And when I have worked Saturday overtime, it has not been Saturday. I am in shape, but only because I maintain that round and puffy is a shape. I am not in 5K shape.

One could argue that this does not matter. People run 5Ks and even longer runs without properly training or training at all. Your body can put up with a one-time great effort. I, personally, can usually count on my stubbornness to keep me going when my body is not actually up to the challenge. It is really a question of how ate-up I will feel afterwards

I do not want to feel ate-up. I want to enjoy all the fun things going on in Little Falls this Saturday! I don’t want to spend the whole run feeling completely horrible. I want to enjoy myself!

These arguments are really very spurious. I will no doubt enjoy the run even if my body does spend the whole time complaining. I feel I am being highly entertaining with my whining. For example, on one run, I passed a couple of ladies pushing strollers.

“There would be room for me in that stroller!” I said. “That kid could shove over!” I got a laugh, or a least a smile.

Additionally, even when I am in the best of shape, I often finish these runs feeling completely ate-up. I like to, as an admired drill sergeant used to say, leave it all on the track. I run faster than I normally go (my Garmin attests to the fact), start my final sprint too early, and run just as hard as I can at the end. it’s more fun that way! And even when it’s not, I just can’t seem to help myself.

I think I must admit that it is my own laziness and depression that are trying to talk me out of signing up for this run. I will feel really bad if I do not participate. Is the dreaded FOMO rearing its ugly head (ooh, there’s a cliche: “rearing its ugly head”) (and it is “its” not “it’s,” I’ve known that since seventh grade and with others knew it as well)? I don’t know if I am succumbing to a recently documented Facebook disease, but I know that if I do not do the Reindeer Run, I will, in fact, Miss Out.

Late Post, Tired Shout-out

So I did pretty good for a few days at posting every day, then last night I went to bed unblogged. In my defense I voted and had rehearsal. Additionally, I got very little sleep Monday night and had a frustrating day at work. Then again my work day could have been worse, and I slept better last night. Under the heading Count My Blessings.

Where was I? Ah yes, making Late Tired Tuesday Post. How about a brief shout-out for our murder mystery, which is this Saturday (yikes!).

These posters are up all over town.

Donate to Murder, written by me by the way, is interactive dinner theatre, in which the audience gets to meet the characters, ask questions and try to solve the mystery, while enjoying a delicious meal catered by Dominick’s Deli. The event, which is a benefit for the Herkimer County Historical Society, takes place at Herkimer Elks Lodge, doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m.

I guess all the information in the preceding paragraph is in the poster. I guess I’m still a little tired.

I have been sitting here, clicking back and forth from “Add new post,” thinking that I just cannot write another post about not being able to make a proper blog post. Which is silly, because of course I can; I do it all the time. Additionally, it is Monstrous Monday. Why shouldn’t I make another post of monster pictures and random remarks? Yet, I feel I should be making more posts about the Mohawk Valley.

A common complaint.

My lack of Mohawk Valley Adventures is really getting on my nerves. It is largely because of these COVID times. My beloved community theatres are dark. Some of my favorite local businesses are closing their doors, we hope temporarily. Community events are rare or virtual. Why am I going on about this? We all know it.

This was in The Emporium in Herkimer, taken during a past adventure.

The other reason for my lack of adventuring is that I went back to work. My body and brain really got used to sitting home. And, it just this minute occurs to me, I am NOT used to learning a new job. I was over nine years at by last job. No wonder I am so tired!

I’m buried in difficulties!

Or am I just making excuses?

I suppose I am. However, I have gotten up to 200 words, my rather arbitrary goal. I will look about me for more local topics for future posts. As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

Another Theatre Throwback

I meant to go to a Mohawk Valley business today for my blog post, but it did not work out.  I am having some serious problems with energy and motivation these days.  Yes, yes, I know:  motivation follows action.  If I do something, anything, I will find my motivation.  The fact is, I had a very enjoyable day reading a book then watching true crime shows on television.  Judge me if you are so inclined.

However, blog posts must be written, at least my blog posts by me, according to my rules for me.  Maybe I could do another Throwback Thursday Post. Or perhaps some Mid-week Monsters.  I’ll look in my Media Library and see what moves me.

Here’s a fun bunch!

Here are some members of Ilion Little Theatre, about to participate in the Doodah Parade last July.  Alas, there were no Ilion Days this year, but let us not dwell on sad things.

I cast a spell on you!

As long as I am remembering the Doodah, here I am, about to participate in the 2018 parade.

A dramatic moment.

I do not seem to have any pictures from the 2017 Doodah Parade,  but here is a picture from July 2017 of The Tempest, presented by LiFT,  Little Falls Theatre Company.  Oh, it has been too long since LiFT has done Shakespeare!  A group of us was trying to revive things in 2020, but it was not to be.

I miss my theatre friends.  Perhaps one day soon we can get dramatic again.  In the meantime,  I see I am over 250 words. I call that respectable, and I’ll see what I can do about having some New Mohawk Valley adventures soon.

Time for Scattered Saturday

It is time for a Scattered Saturday post.  I feel it is better than waiting till tomorrow and hoping to make two posts (never a sure thing, however early I make the first post).

I ran this morning, making a long enough run to keep myself confident for the Reindeer Run 5K, a mere week away (yikes!). I even had some good in-head narration for a Running Commentary blog post.  However, that was not to be.  I shall instead try for a Scattered Saturday.

Our friend Kim picked up me and my husband Steven shortly after noon.  We went to Herkimer Original Cheese, where we sampled and purchased some yummy stuff.  We went to the Mohawk Reformed Church, where we bought some used books and jewelry.  We stopped at Side Streets for a drink.  We went to the Lutheran Church on Henry Street in Herkimer for a vendor fair, bake sale and basket raffle (Steven won something!).

Our last stop was at Valley Wine and Liquor in Herkimer, where we sampled some wine and also purchased some.  We adjourned to our house for a libation and to make plans for further Mohawk Valley Adventures next week.

I realize I can make better blog posts about these stops.  Perhaps I will at some later date.  For now, I shall return to enjoying my Saturday. Happy Weekend, all.

Vampires to Ragtime, It’s Lame Post Friday

This is awesome!

Yesterday when I was searching our laptop’s downloads for Throwback Thursday pics, I saw this gem.  I couldn’t see it well, because the pictures are all teeny-tiny till you post them somewhere.  I took a chance and posted this one here, and I was right!  It is cool!  I thought it would be a good beginning to Lame Post Friday.

Ah, but where do I go from here?  Continue with the post or look for more pictures?  It is reasonable to think that Steven has downloaded other cool pictures that are not of him and me.  Then again, do I feel like leafing through all those downloads looking?  (Full disclosure:  I just spent a few minutes looking and said, “To heck with this!”)

I have a busy day planned for tomorrow, although the most exciting thing is  the Ritz and Ragtime at Rutger Park  fundraiser in Utica, NY. I get to dress in 1920’s costume and interact with guests.  I still have a few things to square away with my costume. I wore a different costume for this fundraiser in past years.

I thought I was pretty hot.

I have a different dress and different hair for tomorrow.  This is what I wore two years ago.  I wore something different yet last year, but I did not get a picture of myself.

Mavis, a gangster’s moll, and Jimmy “the Shiv” Schlavinsky.

Here are a couple of friends at last year’s event.  I hope to get another picture of them tomorrow.

I see I am over 200 words, so I am going to call this OK for a Lame Post Friday.  For more information on the Ritz and Ragtime fundraiser, click on the link above.  Maybe I’ll see you there!

Once Again, About to Break a Lame

The Mummers, minus me.

Hello and welcome to Lame Post Friday.   I have to get ready soon for our Mummers performance at the Great American Irish Festival in Frankfort NY.  I am, as usual before a performance, eager and nervous.  It is a combination not good for my stomach, but I just love it.  Drama is my life!

In the meantime,  blog posts must be made, at least my blog posts by me.  Other bloggers of course must follow their own rules.  Lucky for me it is, as I mentioned earlier,  Lame Post Friday.

I think blog posts are better with monsters.

I thought I would throw in a monster or two.  This fight is symbolic of the fight in my stomach between nerves and anticipation.  You can decide which is which.

Me and some theatrical friends.

I thought I would also include a picture of me being theatrical.  This is from a murder mystery we did a few years ago.  Of course a murder mystery is a different kind of performance from a Mummer’s play.  I like all kinds of theatrical endeavors.

And another monstrous picture to round things out.

I thought I would end with Peter Lorre and Vincent Price reminding me not to lose my head.  Good advice.  Now I’m off to get my costume together.  Then I’ll break a leg!

Mmmmmm… Meeples!

I just realized I did not write about a couple Mohawk Valley Adventures I had last Saturday in conjunction with the Little Falls Cheese Festival.  In lieu (that’s one of my favorite words) of my usual Monstrous Monday, therefore,  I will give a brief shout-out to Meeples Mug House.

In between performances of Where’s the Cheese Monger? (remember, that play I directed?  I believe I wrote a blog post or two about it) I went in search of a cold drink. I ended up at Meeples, where I had my first ever chocolate egg cream.  Yum!

While I drank, I sat at a tall table (I love sitting at a tall table) and tried to write, with I admit indifferent success.  I also watched two young men making shaved ice. It looked pretty good, especially on such a hot day.  Their business is called Sweet Chillz.

Sweet Chillz.

I came back after the play and took a few pictures.  I also had another egg cream.

It was a very popular item.

You can’t really see it, but the line went way back.

A frantic moment behind the counter.

Naturally I wanted a picture of Laura and Matt, who own the place.

My dates for the afternoon.

My husband Steven and friend Kim  joined me for my second visit to Meeples.  Alas that I cannot go back again for a few days.  They are open 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday, 5 to 10 p.m. Friday,  2 to 10 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday.   Meeples is located at 598 E. Main St., Little Falls NY, phone number 315-868-7488.
