At Least I Voted

Once again, my blog is degenerating into late post after late post, whining about how tired I am.  But, hey, when I make a late post, I often do it on the laptop (dining room table top, as regular readers may recall), and I am reminded how much fun ten-fingered typing is.  I must purchase a new laptop.  That might be worth a blog post.

Be all that as it may, I was indeed too tired to make a post yesterday, and I was too tired to go for a walk this morning.  If  I was being less kind to myself, I could substitute lazy for tired, so you may may what judgements you like.  I got home from work tired but had things I needed to do.  Of course I did not do all of them, but I showered (an absolute necessity, given my job and the summer weather) and did a load of laundry (also a necessity if I did not want to wear dirty pants to work) (they are just going to get dirty again, but you’ll have that). Then my husband, Steve, and I headed to Basloe Library in Herkimer, NY to vote.

I am not really adept with my cell phone.

After we voted, I took an ussie, specifically for blogging purposes.  I was truly sorry to leave the library without pausing to look for a book or two, but we were hungry.  Accordingly, we went to Salvatore’s Pizzeria and Restaurant.  Steven got a bacon cheeseburger while I, tempted by the special, got a calzone with three toppings.  I picked meatballs, mushrooms, and black olives.  The reason I went for the meatballs was that I knew we would have a large amount leftover and Steven likes meat on pizza and such-like (isn’t a calzone just a folded-up pizza?).

Back home, all I wanted to do was sit on the couch and watch an episode of Dateline (love that Keith Morrison).  At least I crocheted while I watched, so it was not completely unproductive.  I really must up my crochet game and make more things than afghans, but that is for another day.

In the meantime, I see I am over 300 words.  I call that more than respectable for a late Tired Tuesday post.  Later on, I will strive not to Wuss Out on Wednesday, but as usual, no promises.  And just as an aside, why did I not dub it Wimp-out Wednesday?  Any thoughts?

(Ooh, 400 words! Score!)

Beer, Murder, Vote!

So I’m sitting here, idly scrolling down Facebook and half-listening to 20/20 on OWN, and I suddenly think, “Crap! I have to make my blog post!”  In my defense, I have had a lot on my mind today.  Oh, well, we all have our problems. I will sort mine out sooner or later, one way or another.   In the meantime, I think a Throwback Thursday Post will be nice.

Here’s a handsome dude!

This is my husband, Steven, at the Ommengang Brewery in Cooperstown, NY.   We were having some lovely adventures that day.  God willing, we will have more.

Not quite the usual suspects.

I have shared this memory before: A G.R.A.V.E. Murder, one of the interactive murder mysteries we put on to benefit the Herkimer County Historical Society.  I am supposed to be writing a virtual one, for these COVID times, but so far I am not meeting with success.

One of the first selfies I ever took!

This is from November 2018.  We always feel proud of ourselves for voting. This year Steven voted via absentee ballot, which I obtained and delivered for him, while I voted early (perhaps you read my blog post about it).

I think that makes a nice variety of memories.  Maybe I can go about making some new ones tomorrow.  As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

Pedestrian Post with a Patriotic Purpose

I begin my journey

I walked up to Herkimer College to vote this afternoon. I counted it as my 34 (or more) minutes for diabetes awareness. Additionally, I took some pictures along the way for a blog post. Who says I can’t multi-task? (OK, I am usually the one to say it.)

I think they are miniature sunflowers.

I took a picture of these flowers, because they brightened my day.

It seems steeper in person.

I ran up this hill just the other day. I like walking up hills, although you can get too much of a good thing.

When they said “Do Not Enter,” did they mean me?

I walked up the back way, which is not as steep. The road is open to authorized vehicles only, but I think it is OK for pedestrians. And, as regular readers know, I love to enter when it says not to.

A lovely fall path.
Once again, it seems steeper in person than in the picture.

I had the idea that Early Voting was in the building right at the top of the back way. I soon found I was wrong.

Apparently I did not research the matter sufficiently.

It had only taken me about 20 minutes to walk thus far, so I was happy to continue my walk.

This was about halfway between the other building and my destination.

When I reached the gym, I worried I had overshot my target.

Rats!

I quickly saw some others signs which told me where to go. While I was taking a picture of this sign, a lady called to me from her car window that I was supposed to go around the back.

This way, Cindy!
Dis is de place.
And just in case I missed it.

There were no lines, no waiting in the gym. When I came out, a couple was trying to take a selfie by the sign. I said that was a good idea; I should do that. The lady offered to take my picture, then asked me to take theirs.

Yes, I look silly. Did you expect less?

I walked a different way back, by the dormitories. I paused to take a couple more pictures.

The view would be prettier on a sunny day.
I used the handrail, in case the wood was slippery when wet.

It took me just over an hour altogether. The beauty part was that I did not get rained on. It had been raining most of the day and began again shortly after I got home.

I was delighted to have discharged my civic duty for the year, and I encourage all my readers to do the same, if you have not already done so.

We Voted!

Well, that photo didn’t turn out as well as I thought it would.

So we voted, and my dear husband Steven insisted we take a selfie to commemorate the event.  In fact, we vote in most elections, presidential and otherwise.  Just as an aside, boy do I look old in that picture!

After we voted, we rewarded ourselves with dinner at PK’s Pub in Herkimer, NY (where we live).  It was quite the yummy dinner. I got the Blackened Chicken Salad, which was a good choice for me, because now I have some salad to bring to work for my lunch tomorrow.  Steven had a bowl of clam chowder, because he preferred something light.  I also had two glasses of Chardonnay.  They kind of went to my head (don’t judge)  (oh, hell, judge if you want to; I don’t care).

I posted the above picture on Facebook right after I put it here.  It has gotten seven Likes already.  Regular readers know I am kind of a Like junkie.  I guess we’re all happy about a lot of people voting. However, Mohawk Valley Girl tries to stay off politics and religion.  On the other hand, it is becoming increasingly difficult to stay off politics.  I believe that is a topic for another post.  For now, suffice it to say, I voted.  I hope you did, too.

I Ran, I Voted, Now I’m Blogging

Well, that headline pretty much says it all; do we really need the actual post?  Of course we do!  At least, I do.  It turns out to be Tired Tuesday after all, but I will attempt to type a few moderately amusing paragraphs.

I knew all day that I was going to run.  I did not even feel that I had to talk myself into it; I was looking forward to it!  I think I mentioned that running has all of a sudden gotten fun again.  Naturally by the end of the day I had to remind myself that I did NOT need to be talked into running.  After all, I’m not a maniac. I even multi-tasked by putting a load of laundry into wash while I ran.

Alas, the run was not as much fun as I had anticipated.  It was not a bad run. I enjoyed more the parts in the shade, especially when the breeze was blowing.  It was a beautiful sunny day, such as many people adore. I confess to being more fond of a cloudy, gloomy sky.  No matter.  It was neither as hot nor as humid as yesterday, so I contented myself with that.  I did not run as far as I had run on Sunday; I was one minute shy of my next longest time.  It was quite the effort going for that long.  I mean, most of the run was not at all bad, but the longer I ran, the worser I felt (my computer seems to think “worser” is not a word, but it is exactly what I mean to say).  Well, I won’t get into a blow by blow of how I started out unhappy, got a little happier, then got progressively less happy and on down into relative misery (or have I said too much already?), because this is not a real Running Commentary post.

After getting the laundry into the dryer, hanging the non-dryables, taking my shower, drinking my recovery beverage, and checking my email, I reminded Steven that we had to go vote in the local elections.  He nicely fixed dinner first.

Everybody in Herkimer, NY had to go to the VFW to vote.  I felt lucky to find a parking space right in front of the building.  Additionally, there were no lines.  Score!  I was happy that Steven knew what district we are in, because I can never remember.  What cracked me up was that after we filled out our ballots we were to fold them and put them in this plastic tool box with a slit cut in the lid.  I love living in a small village!

Civic duty done, we returned home to vegetate in front of the television.  As soon as I finish this blog post.  I hope to crochet and watch Dateline.  Happy Tuesday, everybody.

In My Defense, It’s a Bad Headache

I went for a run earlier today, thinking I could make a Running Commentary post.  It beats a Tired Tuesday post, so I thought.  Well, I’m not too tired to write a post, but I have another blankety-blank headache!  What’s that all about? I haven’t done anything to give myself a headache!  It’s no fair.

So here I am whining about my tiresome ills instead of entertaining my readers.

That was when I paused and went to Facebook (my usual dodge during these blogging woes), where I posted that my head hurt and I couldn’t write.  A Facebook friend encouraged me to continue writing my blog post about having a headache.  To be sure, I have had worse headaches.  For one thing, I am sitting upright typing.  The headache has not made my nauseous (I just tried about twelve spellings of “nauseous” before happening on the right one; where’s my damn dictionary, anyways?).

Continuing to count my blessings, I see it is almost time for Steven to get home from work.  We need to go vote.  After my shower, I put on a cute outfit (although perhaps I flatter myself).

Ooh, I hear him now.

I stopped typing and went to vote.  It is one’s democratic duty.  And it did not take long.  No lines, no waiting.  I love small town living.  Once we got home I warmed up and ate some sausage soup, so I am feeling better about everything.  So this is my Tired Tuesday post.  Run, headache, vote.  Oh, and I did a load of laundry.  I’ll get my act together yet!  I hope to see you all on Wuss-out Wednesday, when Mohawk Valley Girl will be surprised and pleased to have made it half-way through the week.

The Ballot of Steve and Cindy

Yes, I voted today. Would you believe the reason I didn’t write my blog post earlier today was that I was busy pondering my decisions on how to cast my ballot? Well, it’s not, but in fact I have not yet written my blog post for today. Full disclosure: I have one almost entirely written, but I want it to be good and anyways it’s too long to type in on a Tired Tuesday such as today.

Be that as it may, here is my voting tale.

Steven and I had several errands to run, so I suggested I get home, change my shoes and we go. Of course it didn’t work that way. For one reason, there was a pot of hot coffee when I arrived home. Naturally I had a cup. It is a rare example of total alignment of the universe that I LOVE the way my husband makes coffee. Surprisingly, it was not why I married him, but I sure do enjoy it now that I’m here.

It didn’t take long to be on our way. When we got to our polling place, a lady standing outside told us where the door to go in was. We already knew but thought it was nice of her to be helpful, so we thanked her as if it was new information. We had to walk by several doors with signs informing us that this was NOT the door. That always amuses me. I was exaggeratedly relieved when we found the correct door, clearly labeled.

Of course we went to the wrong table and the wrong book on the right table before they found where we were supposed to sign for our ballots. One of the poll workers remembers Steve from the play Harvey at Ilion Little Theatre, in which Steven played Dr. Chumley.

“Hi, Doc!” he said. He told another worker that Steven participates at plays in Ilion. I told him Steven might be in another play next year. I do hope Steven will audition for one.

At last we had cast our ballots, thus fulfilling our democratic duty. Steven asked for a sticker, but alas, they were out. We left to run our errands with a little frisson of virtue. Drug store, bank, grocery store, I liked voting best.

It’s All About the Sticker

Yesterday at work, a co-worker was ranting on and on about why vote.

“Nobody has ever given me a good reason!” he declared more than once.

“I intend to write a blog post about it,” I told him, rising to the challenge.

“Nobody has ever given me a good reason!” I don’t think he was listening.

“Blog post! That’s a good reason!” Oh, I know there are a lot of reasons and anyone can feel free to give me a lecture on civic duty at any time via “Leave a comment.” I wasn’t trying to make a reasoned argument, I was trying to shut him up. It didn’t work.

Be that as it may, yesterday Steven and I voted. I was quite frankly hoping somebody would make a funny joke as we waited in line, because that is the kind of thing I like to include. However, there were no lines and no jokes. Well, I made a joke against myself when we couldn’t figure out at first which door they wanted us to go in. I get all self-deprecating at times like these.

They did not offer us “I Voted” stickers. I did not realize that until later, and it was of some concern to me, because I remembered that if I wore my “I Voted” sticker to Curves the next day, I would get put in for a drawing. I like to be put in for a drawing.

At Curves the next day (today), I sadly shared the loss.

“I didn’t even think about it till later,” I said.

“I looked for them, but didn’t think to ask,” another lady said.

“I asked; they didn’t have any,” a third lady said. “They said, ‘Those paper ballots cost us two bucks, we don’t have any stickers!'”

We all expressed our disappointment. The lady that owns Curves said anybody who voted could put in for the drawing, the stickers were not important. Then she found us all stickers that said, “I did it!” So we got our stickers after all.

If you were hoping I would say who I voted for or even express an opinion on the importance of voting, sorry. I think I have mentioned before: Mohawk Valley Girl stays off politics.
