Dracula, Joan, It’s Lame Post Friday!

I was thinking about making my Lame Post Friday post late once again, but I decided not to be so lame as all that. Earlier I thought I would have a lazy, relaxed Friday night, so I am lounged on the couch in pajama pants, sipping Sauvignon Blanc and looking at movies. I just watched Taste the Blood of Dracula then put in Sudden Fear. Christopher Lee to Joan Crawford. Why not?

Dracula likes Friday.

I have been watching too many DVDs since I got rid of cable. Of course I have a somewhat extensive collection, mostly curated by my late, beloved husband Steve. My problem is, I have to be in the mood for a particular movie, and I seem to have watched all the movies I am currently in the mood for. I wish I could change moods as easily as I change DVDs.

Maybe I should stop being in the mood to watch a movie and try to get in the mood to clean this house. I know, I need to clean my house regardless of mood. I’ll work on that tomorrow.

I like this movie, Sudden Fear, but it starts so slowly. I figured that was all right, because I intended to make my blog post while I watched. Unfortunately it took me so long to find the pictures I wanted, the movie has started to heat up. No matter. I’ve seen it before.

Sick Day with Movies

My Blogger’s Sick Day continues. I helped Steven get our deck cleared off and I even raked some leaves in our front yard, uncovering the peonies, which I cut back to hopefully encourage them to come back next spring.

Other than that, I gave lounged on the couch saying, “Shit! Why do I still feel so crapoy?” I intend to make a doctor appointment tomorrow, not that I feel much confidence in that. Never mind, I need to make a blog post right now.

Watch out! It’s the pod people!

I was hoping to find a picture to, as I usually say, pep things up. We are watching Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I am not too ill to watch movies, as I was last night.

I could not find another picture of Invasion, nor yet of the other two movies we watched, but here is one of another good flick, Strangers on a Train. I don’t imagine we will watch this one next, because it is not one of Steven’s favorites, but we may watch it one day soon.

Ooh, here is a movie I did not even think of when Steven and I were trying to pick a black and white movie to watch next, Sudden Fear, with Joan Crawford, Jack Palance, and Gloria Grahams. But it is a thought for later!

Wrist to Forehead Cinema?

Full disclosure: I had some Mohawk Valley adventures on Saturday that I could have written about. But I wanted to to a Sunday Cinema post so we started watching movies. Unfortunately, we are only on the second movie of the day and I want to make my post before it gets any later (when one gets up for work at 3 a.m., it gets late early).

We started out with Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, one of our favorites. I won’t say it is a cinematographic masterpiece, but it is highly entertaining with excellent effects, especially for the time. I’ve named a character Annie in my next murder mystery, after Annie Hayworth, the school teacher, because she is such a door mat.

We debated quite a bit during The Birds as to what we would watch next. I always like to have a connection between movies. I thought of going from The Birds to Birdcage, but I wanted something darker. I thought of The Postman Always Rings Twice, which kind of has a connection because it features Hume Cronyn, who was married to Jessica Tandy, who is in The Birds. Come to think of it, on that basis, we could have gone to Rope, which in addition to being written by Cronyn, is another Hitchcock movie. But we have seen Postman and Rope recently. Moreover, I like to drink champagne when I watch Rope, and I was drinking Barefoot Pinot Noir. At last we settled on Sudden Fear. It does not connect with The Birds, but it is film noir, which goes nicely with pinot noir. Joan Crawford, there could be no possible objection.

As we watched Sudden Fear, we realized our television was getting quieter and quieter. Sometimes it does that and we do not know why. It goes back to a normal volume when we look at regular TV, so now we are looking at Snapped, my usual Sunday treat. If you are wondering about my headline, well, it is Wrist to Forehead Sunday for a number of reasons. As you have seen, I had some heartburnings selecting our second feature. Additionally, I am somewhat mortified in trying to have a Sunday Cinema post on only two features. Well, you’ll have these things when you read a silly blog like mine. I hope to write about my Mohawk Valley adventures in coming days. As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

Two Vampires, a Panther, and Joan, Not in that Order

I think a Throwback Thursday is in order. For one reason, I ain’t got much (as a change from my usual ain’t got nuthin’). My only hope is that I do not repeat anything too recently used. Then again, if it is a good picture, why not use it again?

Here is Blackula, throwing us all the way back to the 1970’s, 1972 to be exact (I googled it. I am getting better at googling things). Things were funky in the ’70’s, and vampires were hip.

From 1972 to 1952 and Sudden Fear. Gotta love me some Joan Crawford. I don’t suppose I have any pictures of films from 1932. Hey, what year was Nosferatu?

Who doesn’t love a classic vampire?

Yes! 1922! Twenty-two has always been my favorite number, ever since I could count that high.

OK, that’s three pictures and only about 150 words. Not very good words, but you’ll have that on Non-Sequitur Thursday (I know I said Throwback Thursday, but sometimes you can have it both ways).

I gotta tell you, that line about luring men on is not exactly accurate, but watch the movie for yourself.

Yes! 1932! I should have looked that up to begin with. How symmetrical have I been? It’s Movies on the Two’s! That might be a good title for today, or maybe I could come up with something that is more of a non-sequitur… Or not. What would be a good title? Discuss amongst yourselves, or in the comments below.

Alas, No Severed Heads for Me

Joan is obviously charmed to meet Gloria, but Jack looks less than thrilled.

It is that moment on a Sunday when I realize: I’ve got to make my blog post, so I can get back to sitting on the couch, knitting, and watching television. It is movies rather than Snapped today, and we began with Sudden Fear, starring Joan Crawford, Jack Palance, and Gloria Grahame. I do enjoy a film noir on a gloomy Sunday (and almost any other day or weather), although ideally I like to sip Pinot Noir whilst I watch. However, you can’t have everything.

Speaking of other things I didn’t get today, I wanted to have a Severed Head Sunday. I have a number of movies that involve heads that part company as it were. Unfortunately, we have just recently watched two.

Obviously, she feels strongly about matters.

I think I even mentioned that I watched the heart-warming classic Straitjacket on Mother’s Day. Joan always played a mother so memorably.

“May I have this dance?”

We watched House on Haunted Hill last night. Actually, in that movie, real severed heads are only mentioned. The severed head you see turns out to be a fake. Oh dear, ought I to have included a spoiler alert for that? I don’t think it will materially injure anybody’s enjoyment of the movie.

It is early in the day, so I suppose I could still fit in a movie with severed heads. Maybe Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte.

Bette Davis, an unsolved murder involving a severed head, what’s not to like? For once, I’m not having a Wrist to Forehead Sunday.

Film Noir, Blog Post Dull

As I type in lead after lead and backspace it out, I realize, it IS Wrist to Forehead Sunday. I know, I ended yesterday’s post with several places I wanted to give a better shout-out to. Did anybody seriously think I was going to do that today? I didn’t. I thought I might write a little something about shoveling the driveway this morning, because I felt like much woman, as my sister Victoria would say. I also thought I might take a walk with my Tablet and take some pictures of the lovely gray sky. Well, I didn’t, so just excuse the hell out of me!

I did a little bit of writing on my murder mystery, Secrets at Suiter House. It is practically finished, but not quite there yet. I’ll work on it.

In the meantime, I need to make a blog post. Maybe a few pictures would help (oh WHY did I not take that walk with the Tablet?).

Can you feel the sex in the air?

Earlier today we watched Double Indemnity, a favorite of ours. Film noir at its best. If only I had had some Pinot Noir to drink with it. Well, you can’t have everything. I did have a little wine, because I saw on Facebook that it is National Wine Drinking Day. According to Facebook, that seems to come more than once a year, but I won’t complain about that. I don’t think you HAVE to observe these things.

A little venom in the air over here,

Since I said pictures, plural, I include a photo from another film noir we enjoyed recently, Sudden Fear. I do like murder and mayhem, as Steven calls it. Speaking of which, I think new episode of Snapped is about to start. That, regular readers may recall, is my real Sunday staple. Once again, sorry for the sloppy blog post. I hope to see you all on Monday for whatever kind of a post I can manage.

We Went with Murder

When my husband Steven and I debated what movies to watch this afternoon, I said, “Murder or monsters.” I thought that would make a good blog post title, then I decided to go with the above. I hope I made the right decision.

Remember cigarette lighters? I remember my grandmother having one.

Our first movie was Strangers on a Train, a Hitchcock I am especially fond of. I like that Farley Granger, who also starred in Rope, one of my all-time favorites. He was a very good-looking young man, but in the extras of Rope, I see he became this really cool-looking older guy. He looked like somebody you would enjoy to hang out with. Alas, I never got the chance. So many cool people to hang out with. So little opportunity to do so. But I must not wax philosophical on Wrist to Forehead Sunday.

After Strangers and dinner (roasted eggplant, yum!), we decided on A Perfect Murder, a rather stylish tale of suspense. So we have had two movies involving murder, and neither were mystery but were fine stories of suspense. What direction shall we go in next? The same? Different? Murder suspense, murder mystery, or maybe my original choice, monster? Last night we opted for suspense noir, with Sudden Fear. Joan Crawford and Gloria Grahame, what’s not to like?

“So pleased to meet you. Which of us will kill the other?”

You can’t see Gloria Grahame so good in this picture, but it’s a nice shot of Crawford and of the other point in the triangle, Jack Palance. I confess to not being a particular fan of Palance, but that is not important now. What is important now is that I am over 250 words on my blog post. Quite respectable for a Wrist to Forehead Sunday post. I must get on with fixing my husband some dessert.
