I Did the DooDah

I had a real Mohawk Valley Adventure Friday when I attended the Ilion DooDah Parade.  The Parade is a major event of Ilion Days, which ran from July 12 through 20 this year.  I was there to cover the event for Sentinel Media (regular readers may remember that is my part-time writing gig), but I ended up riding on a float, so I participated as well.  I took a number of good pictures, so I may have more than one DooDah post.

This was the Grand Marshall of the parade, Yasushi Takase. He was an American Field Service (AFS) exchange student his senior year in Ilion in 1975, and returned for the 50th reunion.   I got his picture after the parade, so it was good I rode on a float till the end.

You can’t read it very well, but it is the post number from the Herkimer American Legion. I boldly asked if I could ride with them, and they graciously allowed me.

Other Legions were represented as well.

It was the Ilion Legion, however, who gave me a bottle of water, which I sorely needed by then. I had been walking up and down in the hot sun, taking pictures, and talking to people who were lining up for the parade.

I didn’t think the Baby Boomers had ever left.

I wondered if I should have asked to ride with this group, since I am technically a boomer.  Really the tail-end of boomerdom.  I guess I fit in better with the Legion, being as I am a Veteran.

What I really should be is a Happy Hagg! I once asked if I could join them, and they were very welcoming.  I just need to learn the dance, figure out a costume, and go to some of their practices.

This was our view off the back of the Legion float (it was a trailer with chairs on it, really).  I’d like to have one of those sunflower hats.

I am afraid this has not been a very coherent account of my evening at the parade.  Full disclosure:  I am back from rehearsal for the play I am in (you may have read some of my blog posts about it) and I am very tired.  However, I am approaching 400 words.  I say OK.  Happy Monday, everyone!

Pre-Posers Post

This is a posthaste post (an old-fashioned word you rarely hear these days, but I love the play on words). Steven and I are about to head out to the Mohawk, NY American Legion to hear our favorite local band, The Posers. They play music from the ’80’s and earlier. So danceable! So fun!

Steven may not be able to dance much; he is still not back to 100 percent. I said he can be like Jack Lemmon dancing with Joe E. Brown in Some Like It Hot, posing dramatically while I dance around him.

This is not the shot I had in mind, so you will have to use your imagination. They were doing the tango. I guess Steven and I are unlikely to tango tonight, but you never know.

Yes, this is a silly post. Luckily for me, it is Lame Post Friday. I’m allowed to be silly! I know, what is my excuse the rest of the time? I could expound upon how it is an empty exercise to offer excuses. That would entail some half-baked philosophy, in which I often indulge on Lame Post Friday. However, I shall not try your patience in such a fashion.

Let us call this, in addition to a Lame Post Friday post, a Preview of Coming Attractions. I will write about the good time I feel sure we are about to have. I also owe my readers a write-up of listening to Phillip Arcuri the other night. Lots of local music lately! Lucky us!

Bob Barker Would Approve

I always liked how at the end of The Price is Right Bob Barker used to and now Drew Carey does remind us to spay and neuter our pets (although I do not watch that show on a regular basis).  I am pleased to participate in a fundraiser for spay and neuter programs.  I am especially delighted to do so when the fundraiser uses a play on words for its title.   So I made a definite plan to go to the Spay-getti and No Balls Dinner sponsored by 4PetsSake food pantry (whose name is another good play on words), last Saturday at the American Legion in Mohawk, NY.

 

The Legion is in a lovely building.  I admired the staircase and woodwork as Steven and I walked in.  When we purchased our dinner tickets, I asked would it be all right to go into the bar area and purchase a glass of wine.  It was all right with them if it was all right with the Legion.

 

The Merlot was tasty.  The dinner was even better.  The spaghetti was not overcooked, as sometimes happens with these large dinners, and despite the No Balls title, two delicious meatballs were included.  We waited till after we had finished dinner and a yummy dessert (brownie for me, red velvet cake for Steven) before looking at the items available for the Chinese auction.

 

After we left, we sat on the front porch for a few minutes.  I do love sitting on a front porch and am so happy we finally got the weather for it.  Mickey and Minnie Mouse and a large dog were playing on the lawn with a few kids.  The dog petted one little girl.  When we left he was rubbing her tummy.

 

It was an enjoyable evening, and it got even better when Steven got a phone call that he had won a basket of dog treats from Adirondack Puppy Truffles in Remsen.  They are wheat free, corn free, soy free, handcrafted and all natural.  Tabby loves them.
