Even Foolish Blog Posts Count

I still have the tiara. I may wear it next Thursday.

I thought I would start with a Throw-back Thursday picture then segue into the non-sequitur portion on Non-Sequitur Thursday.  I feel this is a double throw-back, since I am impersonating a speakeasy habitue from the 1920’s, Ruby Van Renssalaer by name.  No, I was not around in the 1920’s, do some math for heavens’ sake! (You know who you are.)  Ruby Van Rensssalaer was a character in Rubbed Out at Ruby’s, which LiFT presented at The Overlook Mansion in Little Falls, NY.  Some of the characters also appeared at the Ritz and Ragtime fundraiser for the Landmarks Society of Greater Utica, which is when this picture was taken.

As you may have guessed, once again I got nuthin’.  I have tried to do more writing, specifically by writing a couple of letters.  Regular readers may recall my rule of Any Writing Counts.  It would be a good idea if I actually finished said letters and got them in the mail.  Then some people might be happy to get a letter.  I received a letter the other day and I can attest, it’s awesome.

This guy is a walking non-sequitur.

I shake things up by throwing in another picture.  This is my friend, Tucker, in LiFT’s recent murder mystery, Donation to Murder.  I do love my murder mysteries.

I find this picture rather profound.

This is an even more recent photo, from Shattered Angel by Stephen Wagner, presented by the Herkimer County Historical Society at Ilion Little Theatre.  Lots of us love a good historical murder!

Who could blame me for using the ax on him?

Shattered Angel makes me think of Roxy by Jack Sherman, which the Historical Society did in 2015, with yours truly in the title role.

My throwback non-sequitur posts often end up being a stroll down theatrical memory lane.  I do love my community theatre.  And I will work on writing better blog posts.  Happy Thursday, everyone!

Not Too Mundane, I Hope

Tasty Thursday does not have the same ring as Tasty Tuesday.  And yet, I just cooked and I don’t have much else to blog about today.  If only I had also concocted a special cocktail to go with dinner, we could have had Thirsty Thursday.

“Buy me a drink, Big Boy?”

Alas, I am sipping a mundane glass of Chardonnay. No matter, dinner was tasty.

We had some ground beef Steven had taken out to thaw two days ago but didn’t feel like cooking.  This morning he suggested he purchase a can of cream of mushroom soup and do something with that.  Now I have lost all cred with real cooks, but I grew up in the 1970’s; a can of cream of mushroom soup was a perfectly respectable ingredient in those days.

I put the ground beef on to cook and poured myself some Chardonnay, so I could cook with wine.  I put Worcestershire sauce on the meat and broke it up as it cooked.  When it was nearly done, I added the soup and a can of mushrooms.  Then it was time for the spices (my favorite part!): minced onion, garlic powder, and No Salt All Purpose Seasoning from the So Sweet Candy Cafe in Utica, NY (just to give the post a little local flair).  I would have added onion powder as well, but our bottle of it was completely solid.  I added it to the grocery list.  I had used the liquid from the mushrooms to get most of the soup out of the can, so the mixture looked a little thin.  I added some grated cheese to thicken it up, using that up too, so that was something else for the grocery list.

We had the stuff over some pasta I had in one of our canisters.  I don’t know what the shape is called, because I had thrown out the box.  They looked kind of like SpaghettiOs (that’s how it’s spelled, computer, I Googled it!).

It was a pretty tasty dinner, although I supposed it was kind of mundane, now that I look at what I wrote.  No matter.  It was dinner.  I cooked it, we ate it, I blogged about it.  I’m going to call that a win for Non-Sequitur Thursday.  I’ll just throw in a random picture, so I’m not too mundane.

I bet you thought I was going to use Nosferatu (you know who you are).

I Think Candy Would Help

I believe this was in December.

I wanted to do a Throw-Back Thursday, but I can’t seem to settle on any throw-back pictures, so I thought I would throw back to not too long ago and give a shout-out to a local business.  This is my husband, Steven, and our friend, Margaret, proprietor of the So Sweet Candy Cafe in Utica, NY.  It is a lovely little shop with lots of goodies.  I think another trip there is in my near future.

“Oh shame! Oh degradation!”

Since this is also Non-Sequitur Thursday, I do not feel I need to have a theme to my throw-backs.  This is me and our dear, recently departed friend, Julianne Allen, in Dirty Work at the Crossroads Ilion Little Theatre at  in 2013.  My character was having a real wrist to forehead moment.  It is kind of the way I feel when I fear I am making a really foolish blog post (which, as we all know, is often).

I even felt kind of like Superman that day.

Here is another throw back to a mere year ago, the East Herkimer Fire Department 5K.  It is also another wrist to forehead situation, because, alas, I did not run it this year.  I meant to, but I neglected to write it on my calendar and something else came up.  Well, there’s always next year.

That reminds me, I need a hair cut.

Also about a year ago, Steven and I visited the Ommengang Brewery in Cooperstown, NY.  Now, there’s a place I need to go again.  Maybe I could write about it for Mohawk Valley Living magazine.  It would definitely make a good blog post.  I’m afraid this has not been a particularly good post.  I’ll try to do better tomorrow, but no promises.  After all, it will be Lame Post Friday.

Did Someone Say Beer?

I feel a Non-Sequitur Thursday post brewing in (what’s left of) my brain, but first: a sad (to me, anyways) note:  A Trivial Murder has been postponed till spring, date to be determined.  I had all my lines learned and was working on everybody else’s (it is helpful to know the whole script, so you can help out if the actors get off track) (but that’s a whole other blog post) (then again, why should I worry about getting sidetracked on Non-Sequitur Thursday?).

Where was I?  Ah yes, nowhere.  As usual at these times, I will look for a picture to post.

“Doh! Wrong holiday!”

What could be more non-sequitur than Santa Claus in a Halloween shirt? (That could be a rhetorical question, but if anybody has an answer, feel free to comment below.)  This picture is from last October, but Santa is wearing that shirt now.  Alas, I cannot wear it myself any more, because I have worn it out.  It is riddled with itty bitty holes.  We have not decorated much for our favorite holiday this year.  Perhaps tomorrow or Saturday I will take pictures of what there is (besides Santa) and make a blog post about it.  I’m too lazy to do it now.  Additionally, I have to run soon to a rehearsal for the Haunted Historic Four Corners Tour I mentioned in yesterday’s post.

I need another picture.

Whodunnit? We’ll never tell!

Since I’m feeling a little sad about A Trivial Murder, I’ll share the picture of last October’s A G.R.A.V.E. Murder.  That was a fun one.

“Where have you been all my life, tall, dark and gruesome?”

Just to add one more photo, and to remind myself that it is so Thursday (I’ve had a four day week so get a little confused), I close with this.  Who doesn’t love Frankenstein’s monster with a mermaid? (That one was definitely a rhetorical question.)  I wonder if I have any beer in the fridge…

But What About Joan Crawford?

So it’s another bad blogging week.  Sue me.  I’ll work on having some Mohawk Valley adventures this weekend and go for a better week next time.  That is the beauty of blogging: you can try again tomorrow.  The fact is, although I am feeling better than yesterday, the lightheadedness that plagues me continues to do so (my computer seems to think that lightheadedness is not word, but if lightheaded is, why not lightheadedness?  Discuss among yourselves).

I don’t have a suit that spiffy, and to my knowledge, nobody has pointed a gun at me. I rather think a gun would have more of an effect on me than on an actual zombie.

This is from The Walking Dead (1936).  It was posted by a Facebook page I Like, B-Movie Mania, and I said, “Ooh, that’s me!”

And that’s about all I have for this week’s Non-Sequitur Thursday post.  However, I can’t let it end here.  There must be other pictures that are appropriate.  Let me look.

“…and soon they’ll come for you!”

Here’s a haunted look, if you like.  It’s that guy from House on Haunted Hill (1959), produced and directed by my beloved William Castle. That actor was also in Rosemary’s Baby (1968), which was produced but not directed by Castle.  Whenever I refer to him as merely “Castle,” I flash on the Nathan Fillon television show.  I loved that show, especially the divine Susan Sullivan.

She is marvelous.

I may have crossed a line myself, blog-wise.  No matter.  I’m over 200 words.  Once I think of a title, I have a blog post.  Happy Thursday, everyone.

What Would Clara Bow Have Done?

I was about to title this one Post Rehearsal Post, but then I thought it might be a Non-Sequitur Thursday, in which case, the title ought not directly reflect the content of the post.  Oh the conundrums of the daily blogger!

I just returned from the first rehearsal for A Trivial Murder, the murder mystery we are putting on to benefit Herkimer County Historical Society.  It will be Saturday, Nov. 3, 6 p.m. (doors open at 5), at the Ilion Moose Lodge.   The cost is $25.00/person. To purchase tickets, stop by the Society, Monday-Friday, 10-4, or send a check in the mail and they’ll send your tickets to you – HCHS, 400 N. Main St., Herkimer, NY 13350. For more information, call 315-866-6413.

I brought my Tablet to take a couple of pictures, but neglected to actually take any.  Instead, I offer a picture of a previous murder mystery for the Historical Society.

That was a fun cast, yes, but this one will be great, too!

Before rehearsal, my friend Kim and I went up to the costume rooms at Ilion Little Theatre (ILT) looking for a 1920’s costume for me for the Ritz and Ragtime at Rutger Park fundraiser on Saturday.  We and a other members of LiFT (Little Falls Theatre Company) are volunteering and must look the part.  I did not want to wear the dress I wore last year (also borrowed from ILT) (and returned); I wanted to wear the dress worn by another character in Rubbed Out at Ruby’s (a murder mystery presented by LiFT last year).

This is what I wore last year; some people thought I looked pretty fine.

I was looking for the black dress on the girl sitting next to me who is NOT strangling me.

However, after looking for a while, I just wanted to find ANYTHING that worked.  Eventually I found a black velvet gown that will do. Alas, it does not look like a flapper dress.  Maybe I’m a little too old to be a flapper.  SAY IT AIN’T SO!!!  After rehearsal (which went pretty well), I went home and sought out accessories to make the gown 1920’s ready.

So this is my Non-Sequitur Thursday post.  At least I plugged two upcoming local events, and included a couple of pictures.  I call that respectable.  Happy Thursday, everybody.

Oh crap, I still have to think of a title.

Movie Memories on Non-Sequitur Thursday

I was sitting here trying to think of what to make my blog post about and thought to myself, “I’ll have my Throwback Thursday early!”  And then I remembered:  it IS Thursday!  I love it when that happens instead of, you know, the opposite.  I wonder what I have in my Media Library that I have not used recently.

I think he likes her.

I was looking for something from my life, but here is a movie almost as old as I am: Mary Poppins (1964).  It is a meaningful movie in my life, actually.  It is the first movie I saw in a theatre.  I had previously seen Goldfinger (ooh, also 1964; I just looked that up) at a drive-in, although I was a little kid and did not pay much attention.  My Mom took all us kids to the Capitol Theatre in Rome, NY, to see Mary Poppins.  I was as impressed with the theatre as I was with the movie.  This was also the first movie my husband, Steven, saw in a theatre.  He credits it with beginning his lifelong love of movies.

Do you wonder why I was impressed?

This is the inside of the Capitol Theatre in Rome, NY.  Magnificent, no?

I don’t know what he’s looking at, but she’s giving him the side-eye.

I add this picture to make this more of a Non-Sequitur Thursday.  However, I don’t know how much of a non sequitur it is, because it is another meaningful movie.  The Brain That Wouldn’t Die  (1962) is one of my favorite movies of the cheesy variety.  But the way it gets here is kind of random:  I downloaded the picture of the Capitol.  When I went to put it here, I transposed two numbers and almost put in this one instead.  I fixed the error, then said, “Hey!”

Now there’s a spray tan!

Since I mentioned Goldfinger, I looked for a picture of that, too.  I did not even realize it was Goldfinger I had seen at the drive-in till years later.  I just remember during one of the few moments where I was watching the movie, my father told me that a guy had killed a girl and spray-painted her gold.  I thought it was an odd thing to do but figured I had not been paying enough attention for it to make sense.  I’m thinking Goldfinger was the only movie where that happened, although I daresay I could be mistaken.

So here is my silly Thursday post.  Full disclosure:  I’ll probably get even sillier tomorrow.  As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

Murder On My Mind

First a note:  Yesterday when I said I know a guy who I suspect was not as good a writer as he thought himself… That was NOT somebody with whom I am currently acquainted.  It was a guy I knew a long time ago. I never read anything he wrote, either, so he may have been brilliant.  It is still neither here nor there.  On with the blog post.

It is Non-Sequitur Thursday.  I had meant to go running and do a Running Commentary, but I had a headache all day.  I dragged myself through the full day of work rather than burn a half a vacation day.  By the time I got home I felt disinclined to push myself any further (how’s that for a mixed metaphor?  Did I drag or did I push?  I still have a headache).  Just to add a little whining to the mix, because, as I always say, go with your strengths.

“Take me away, Tall, Dark and Gruesome!”

I was looking for a different graphic when I saw this one.  I thought it was appropriately random and on topic.  I was looking for a logo of 20/20 on OWN, which is what we are watching right now.  I always like a little murder and mayhem.

Oh look, I am over 200 words and I have not said much of anything.  I simply must have some Mohawk Valley adventures to write about this weekend.  I’ll start right after work tomorrow.  My headache should be gone by then.  In the meantime, I would like to share a couple more pictures, just in the interests of entertainment.

Here’s a suspicious-looking bunch.

This is the cast from last fall’s murder mystery, A G.R.A.V.E. Murder.  I guess I have murder on my mind (ooh, that would make a good title, although it is not really a non-sequitur.  Still, you can’t have everything).

Now THERE’S a murderess!

This is from the first murder mystery I wrote for the Herkimer County Historical Society, Who Shot JS?  Just to loop back to titles, which I was talking about yesterday and in today’s first paragraph, I did not think up that title.  Titles are hard!

Two Vampires, a Panther, and Joan, Not in that Order

I think a Throwback Thursday is in order. For one reason, I ain’t got much (as a change from my usual ain’t got nuthin’).  My only hope is that I do not repeat anything too recently used.  Then again, if it is a good picture, why not use it again?

He’s probably stepping outside for a smoke.

Here is Blackula, throwing us all the way back to the 1970’s, 1972 to be exact (I googled it.  I am getting better at googling things).  Things were funky in the ’70’s, and vampires were hip.

Gloria Grahame, Jack Palance, Joan Crawford, and some other guy.

From 1972 to 1952 and Sudden Fear.  Gotta love me some Joan Crawford.  I don’t suppose I have any pictures of films from 1932.  Hey, what year was Nosferatu?

Who doesn’t love a classic vampire?

Yes! 1922!  Twenty-two has always been my favorite number, ever since I could count that high.

OK, that’s three pictures and only about 150 words.  Not very good words, but you’ll have that on Non-Sequitur Thursday (I know I said Throwback Thursday, but sometimes you can have it both ways).

I gotta tell you, that line about luring men on is not exactly accurate, but watch the movie for yourself.

Yes! 1932!  I should have looked that up to begin with.  How symmetrical have I been?  It’s Movies on the Two’s!  That might be a good title for today, or maybe I could come up with something that is more of a non-sequitur…  Or not.  What would be a good title?  Discuss amongst yourselves, or in the comments below.

Non-Sequitur Steve

It is that moment on a weeknight when you know you need to get to bed (YES, I go to bed EARLY, you would too if you got up at 3 stupid a.m., and if you wouldn’t you ought to), but you want to make your blog post because, once again, you cannot bear for today to be the day you do not post.  Regular readers may like to point out that some days I have not made a post and made two the next day.  However, on those days I have made one of those posts EARLY in the morning.  I will be at work early in the morning tomorrow. I can’t be making a blog post then.

I can feel my brain becoming muddled.  I know, what makes today any different?  Never mind that, I have a blog post to make.  How about a Throw Back Thursday?  I’ve done that before.  A Throwback Non-Sequitur Thursday, then it doesn’t have to make sense. I know, when do I ever?  Just never mind disparaging my brain and blogging abilities, let’s get on with the post.

Talk about your kid in a candy store!

Here is a sweet throwback:  my husband Steven and childhood friend Margaret in Margaret’s So Sweet Candy Cafe in Utica, NY.  What a great place to be! I wish I was there now!

Isn’t he handsome?

I continue with Steven, but now he is at the Ommengang Brewery in Cooperstown, NY.  I do like beer.

Three handsome dudes!

And this is Steven, our friend Jim, and our new best friend bartender Larry at Gerber’s 1933 Tavern in Utica.  There’s a place I need to go again!

And now I am over 250 words, so I call this a respectable blog post.  I might hope for a better blog post tomorrow, but it will be Lame Post Friday.  I hope to see you all then.
