First World Problems on Wayback Wednesday

I got out of the house and ran some errands today but, alas, did not take any pictures. In my defense, my errands were not that exciting in nature. Also, gimping around on crutches with a bag that may come crashing off my shoulder at any minute is not especially conducive to photographic activities. On the brighter side, I am filled with gratitude and good feelings about humanity. People at every stop went out of their way to hold doors open for me and had no problems waiting for me while I fumbled with said bag, looking for cash, ID, or whatever. My only problem now is what to blog about. I suppose that comes under the heading First World Problems.

I go for a Wayback Wednesday post with a picture from 2017. This is my late, dearly missed husband Steven outside the library in Arlington, VT. We were on a visit to his family and were leaching on the library’s WiFi, a most convenient thing to do when one has a laptop, as opposed to the dining-room-table-top it eventually became (oh, here is a handy thing: my Chromebook automatically put in the hyphens which I meant to add after typing in the words with no spaces. Sometimes technology works in my favor!).

I must do some deck-sitting again.

Here is a shot from 2020, You can see Steve’s leg on the left. The sandals I am wearing have sadly broken, and my deck is far from sitting-ready. That is something I must work on. However, my leg seems to be tolerating more movement lately, so perhaps I will attempt some chores around the house (preview of coming attractions). Will chores be blog-worthy? We shall see. As always, I hope you will stay tuned.

Fun at the Sugar Shack

My husband Steven reminded me that I neglected to make a blog post about one of our adventures in Vermont, a visit to The Sugar Shack.

We almost always hit this place when we are in the vicinity. I was especially anxious to get there this time because I wanted post cards. Steven was anxious because we were out of maple syrup (or maple syrple, as I like to call it) ( with a nod to the late, great Roger Miller).

I loves me some real maple syrple!

You can purchase many things at The Sugar Shack: cheese, mustards, jellies, donuts, cookies and other yummy stuff. Also t-shirts, sweatshirts, hats and other touristy stuff. Steven has previously purchased Vermont shot glasses, and we are the proud owners of a Sugar Shack coffee mug featuring Shack, one of the owner’s yellow labs.

The pooches don’t show up so good in this shot.

We chatted with owner Kim Hawley, and she posed for us with this photo collage of both her dogs. You can check out many pictures of the pooches on the Sugar Shack Facebook page.

The Sugar Shack is also the home of many displays from the Norman Rockwell museum. We have purchased coffee mugs, prints, and post cards of work by that wonderful American artist.

We didn’t go into this building, but I got a shot of the exterior.

We had a fun if short visit. I got my post cards and some yummy donuts. I look forward to our next visit to Vermont,

I prevailed upon Steven to pose for one last shot.

Please Excuse Mohawk Valley Girl…

Is this great or what? I am typing in my blog post on an honest to goodness computer. I am at the Martha Canfield Library in Arlington, VT. Oh dear, any nefarious persons reading this, do not bother going to rob my house; it has NOT been left unoccupied. Moreover, there is nothing there worth stealing. However, if you do not believe me and try, please tidy up while you are there, because I left a mess. My one regret is that I did not bring my reading glasses and must tilt my head at an uncomfortable angle. How silly of me.

My other discomfort is that these keys I am typing on are not silent. I can hear myself thump-thump-thumping on them and can only hope it does not bother any other library patrons. At least, I don’t know if there are any other library patrons. The parking lot was empty when I pulled in, causing me to fear the library was not open. However, I could possibly bother the nice lady behind the desk.

Yes, this is a Wuss-out Wednesday post, which may only be enjoyed by myself, and in fact I am enjoying the ten-fingered typing so painstakingly acquired the summer before 10th grade. It is quite my favorite skill. What I really need to let readers know is that due to my being out of town, visiting family for a sad reason, I may not be able to post every day, for the next few. I know, I know, I should have planned ahead, maybe had a few posts waiting in the wings. I think we all know, I don’t work that way, more shame to me.

In any case, if and when I can get back on a library or other computer, I make a note to myself: do not forget reading glasses. My neck does not like all this head tilting!

Getting Some Sugar at the Shack

I usually give shout-outs to Mohawk Valley businesses, but once in a while I like to mention favorite destinations when I travel. One of the best is The Sugar Shack in Arlington, Vermont. They are a country store selling Vermont products including maple syrup, cheese, baked goods and more. You can also buy all sorts of touristy items such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, glasses, post cards and other things.

Additionally, the store is home to a Norman Rockwell exhibit which was previously housed at the Norman Rockwell Museum in Arlington. When the museum closed, the Sugar Shack gave a home to the displays. My husband Steven and I were so happy when this happened. We used to stop at that museum whenever we were in Vermont and were very disappointed when it closed. We love Norman Rockwell! We have several framed Rockwell prints on our walls as well as a few coffee mugs featuring his work.

Speaking of coffee mugs, one of our favorites is one from the Sugar Shack featuring the owner’s lovely dog Shack. They have two dogs now, and the last time Steven and I were at the store, Steven noticed there is now a mug available with both dogs. Our kitchen cabinet is quite full of coffee mugs. Still, we might find room for a mug with both Sugar Shack dogs.

We follow the Sugar Shack on Facebook. We don’t need a reminder to visit when we are in the area, but it is nice to hear about fresh cider donuts and see pictures of the dogs.
