Come On, Steve!

That is  silly headline, but since this is Lame Post Friday, I do not apologize.  I have been scurrying around since I left work as if I thought I was going to get something done.  Ha!  How long have I known me?  But at least I can cross Make Blog Post off my list (full disclosure:  it is only a mental list today) before going back to enjoying my Friday.

Immediately after leaving work, I went to the Salvation Army Thrift Store (known as Salvation Armani to some) in Ilion, NY.  I was seeking a costume for the 1920s murder mystery LiFT Theatre Company is doing at the Overlook Mansion in Little Falls in February (I keep promising more on that later; maybe tomorrow I’ll finally write that one). I thought I could find a prom or bridesmaid’s gown that would work.  I thought drop-waist, light material, maybe a little lace, at least knee length.  Some ’20s costumes are short, of course, by my character is an older, glamorous, rich lady.  Well, she thinks she’s glamorous.  Actually she’s kind of a lush, but I digress.

I went through two racks of all kinds of dresses.  I found one that was ridiculously close to perfect, although it was black instead of red (my character’s name is Ruby).  Also, it was a size zero.  Now, you may not believe this, but I did have a 25 inch waist roughly a hundred years ago.  However, I have never, ever, for one moment ever in my life, been a size zero.  I kept looking.

The stop at the Thrift Store was not a total loss.  I found four books, two of which are the old, pulp fiction paperbacks I collect.  No, I did not think I was going to find a dress in with the books.  Did you think I was not going to look at the books?  How long have you known me?  Oh well, I guess some of you may not have known me that long.  I like to look at the books.

After buying the books, I went to New 2 You Consignments in Central Plaza.  They have a lot of prom dresses!  I tried on one that might kind of sort of work.  I don’t know.

Then I felt discouraged and went home.  I chatted on Facebook with a friend who had talked about coming over for drinks and snacks tonight.  I realized I’d better run to the store and get some food.  I went to Hannaford.  I am so indecisive.  It took me a while, but I got home with some stuff.  I started mixing dip and chopping vegetables, occasionally running to the computer to check if my friend was in town and on her way over.  As it turned out, once she got home, she felt tired and cold and wanted to stay there.  I surely could not blame her for that.  For one reason, I don’t want her getting sick.  She is in both Steel Magnolias and the murder mystery.

I finished my chopping and mixing, because Steven and I still have to eat.  It was almost time for him to get home.  I poured myself a glass of wine and sat down to make my blog post.  Which was, you know, this.

Incidentally, Steven got home about three paragraphs ago.  I started typing faster, pausing as he started to tell me about his day.  But now I think I have typed enough to hit publish.  I need to eat some of the food I indecisively bought and hurriedly chopped up and/or mixed.  Happy Friday, everyone.

All Kinds of Drama in 2017!

Welcome to the first Mental Meanderings Monday of 2017.  I hope nobody is expecting brilliance (I know, most of you never had such expectations of me) (OK, me neither),  because I feel tired and stupid.  These are not unfamiliar feelings for me, but I do not repine.  I just have to wait and sooner or later I will feel some other way.  That is how it works.

Where was I?  Ah yes, mentally meandering.  I’m expecting my post-Christmas letdown to continue at least for a few more days, with the occasional relapse as the month wears on.  On Wednesday I have a meeting to talk more about the murder mystery LiFT Theatre Company is doing at the Overlook Mansion in Little Falls.  Who could be uncheered by a murder mystery? (That is a paraphrase from Winnie the Pooh, by the way.  I think the real line is, “Nobody could be uncheered by a balloon.”) Thursday I have the read-through for Steel Magnolias at Ilion Little Theatre.

And then I have at least two more murder mysteries to write, in addition to writing articles for Mohawk Valley Living magazine and making a blog post every day. Then there is running, finally organizing my house and life, and of course seeking out new Mohawk Valley adventures.  I hope to also find time to crochet, knit, and watch true crime on cable television, as well as the occasional cheesy movie to write a blog post about (I haven’t done one of those posts in a long time!).

I see that I am over 250 words.  Score!  And never once did I whine about my inability to come up with a blog post for today.  That makes me feel a good deal less stupid than I felt when I typed the first paragraph.  You see, I was right:  just wait and I will feel a different way.  Bring on 2017!

I’ll Miss that Dead Day

I mentioned yesterday that I had started writing a shout-out to Overlook Mansion’s Day of the Dead, which is tomorrow at 6 p.m.  My plan was to try to finish it for today’s post, and as I begin to implement that plan I see that I did not have such a lot written to begin with.  I think I did mention I had a headache yesterday.  Never mind, let’s get on with the post.

The event is also being called a Dia de los Muertos themed fall celebration.  It is a family-friendly event with a whole lot of stuff going on. Costumes are encouraged but not required.  Face painting will be available, so if you show up looking normal, you don’t have to stay that way.  Members of LiFT will be on hand in costume and in character.  You know, theatre people.

Activities for kids will include Sugar Skull decorating and a scavenger hunt.  There will be a Salsa Dancing demonstration as well as story and fortune telling.  Light snacks and non-alcoholic punch will be available.   Personally, I was looking forward to just walking around the gorgeous Overlook Mansion.  I was there briefly when LiFT met to begin planning (perhaps you read my blog post about it) and fell in love with the place.

Advance sale tickets are available at brownpapertickets.com with prices as follows:  Individual tickets are $25 for adults, $12.50 for ages 12 and under.  Pairs of tickets are $40 for two adults, $30 for one adult and one child.  A family special is available for $50 for two adults and  two children.  Tickets will also be available at the door at $30 adults, $15 children 12 and under.

For more information, contact the Overlook Mansion, 55 Douglas St.,  Little Falls, NY, (315) 823-1907.

In My Defense, I Have a Headache

OK, this is what happened to me today.  I was supposed to be helping decorate the Overlook Mansion in Little Falls, NY, for their Dia de los Muertos themed fall celebration.  Several members of LiFT, the Little Falls Theatre Company, are participating.  Well, I decided I could not do it.  I have too many issues (and not back issues of Playboy).  Or maybe I’m too big of a baby.  Reasons are so tiresome.

A work friend had told me about this wonderful display of vintage movie costumes at Sangertown Mall, outside of Boscov’s, the new department store there.  I guess it is part of Boscov’s Grand Opening.  Steven and I LOVE old movies.  We wanted to go see.  Steven would have preferred to go on Thursday, but there is snow in the forecast.  So we went today.  I took a few pictures with our Tablet, in hopes of writing a blog post about it.

Additionally, I began writing a blog post while at work today, about the Outlook’s Day of the Dead.  I thought it would be nice to give them a shout-out, even if I do not take part.  Regular readers may also remember that I had hoped to go running after work and write about that.  Well, I did not do that, because then we never would have made it to the mall.

I’m seeing all these possibilities for blog posts and here I sit typing off the top of my head and doing it  quickly, because I want to go lie down.  I did mention that I have issues and that I’m a big baby, didn’t I? So I’m calling this a Wuss-out Wednesday, and I hope, as usual, to come up with something better tomorrow.  In the meantime if anybody wants to find out more about the event at the Overlook, I refer you to their Facebook event.  For more information on the costume display, I refer you to the Boscov’s (New Hartford) Facebook page.  As always, thank you for playing.

On to the Overlook!

So last night I had to drive the the Overlook Mansion in Little Falls.  I had never been there, but I figured I could find it.  Little Falls isn’t that big, is it?  Silly me.  I forgot how talented I am at getting lost.

Before leaving, I went to the Overlook’s Facebook page and clicked on About. That showed me a map, which I also clicked on.  I typed in a couple of different starting places and studied the lines the map showed me.  I asked Steven to write down “Ann Street to Monroe to Lewis to Douglas.”  55 Douglas is the address.  Steven wrote it on his pad of paper with a picture of Underdog on it.  “There’s no need to fear!  Underdog is here!”  I set out.

Finding Ann Street was easy enough.  I looked for Monroe.  Soon I was running out of Ann.  Ah, Ann ends making a T with Monroe.  Naturally I had not made a note of which direction to turn.  Still, I had a 50/50 chance of being right.  Uh, of being correct.  But I did turn right.  And kept looking for Lewis.  As the road went up, I thought I must have chosen the correct direction.  Would not a place called Overlook be on top of a hill?  Soon I was driving out of town.  Oh dear.

At least it was a scenic road to be lost on.  I enjoyed the beautiful views of farmland and mountains.  You can see for MILES!  I especially enjoyed the blues and greys of the cloudy sky as the sun set and it turned to dusk.  I finally turned around in somebody’s driveway and headed back to Little Falls.

At last I found Lewis. Phew!  And the road started up again.  Silly me, it is a mountainous area.  Almost any direction is bound to go up eventually.  And there was Douglas.  Soon I was driving up the driveway to the Overlook.  It is a narrow road surrounded by trees.  I found it a little spooky, which is a quality I enjoy in a road.  And there was the Overlook.

What a place!  I think I’m in love!  I must, I positively must learn how to add photos.  I’ll write more about the place in future posts. In the meantime, you can go to their website, http://overlookmansion.com/mansion/, or Facebook page.
