Will My Garden Grow?

Hello and welcome to another Waste Not Want Not Wednesday, the day when I use up some of the pictures I impulsively take as I go about my business.  Full disclosure:  I have not felt well all day, sorry for whining about it, but if this post is not up to par, so to speak, that is my excuse.  I know, what is my excuse the rest of the days? Never mind that, on with the post.

Isn’t that lovely?

I had to pause during one of my walks to take a picture of this flower.  I think it is some kind of lily, but I don’t know from plants.  My own garden, container and regular, has not progressed as planned this year.  However, it is only June.  I might still come up with something, maybe even something this pretty.

Now there’s something to aspire to!

This was outside the post office; I took the picture yesterday afternoon after I had mailed a letter to a sister-in-law and a bill.  It makes me feel bad for not doing my container garden yet.

Who could resist a turtle?

This was on Main Street in Herkimer.  Isn’t he cute?  I have a few frogs I could put out, again, if I manage to get my garden together.

Now I have inspired myself.  I can’t do much about my garden tonight, because I have a Town Hall meeting to cover, and my stomach is quite upset (I hope the meeting does not get too dramatic and really upset my tummy).  But tomorrow, I do not have anything on my schedule.  I can finish cleaning my deck!  I can visit a couple of greenhouses!  It will make a great blog post!

Don’t Forget My Flowers

For my Tired Tuesday post, I shall share the pictures I took after leaving the Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast yesterday. I turned down Main Street and walked toward the post office.

I saw a classic truck I tried to take a picture of, but I was unable to zoom in. When I tried, I could only put it in Selfie Mode. Who wants to see a selfie of me! Nobody needs to see that! I took a shot of some forget-me-nots instead.

I particularly like the rocks.

I took care not to include any identifying characteristics of the house. I did not see any more photo-ops (is that a hyphenated word?) till I got home and decided to take a picture of my own forget-me-nots. They seem to be taking over my front yard, although I expect the daisies will soon give them some spirited competition.

The dandelions are not giving up either.

I went out back to get a shot of the forget-me-nots there, but they have not grown together as thickly so the picture did not turn out well. It is kind of surprising, because they have been out back since we moved in but only appeared out front in the last year or so. I took a picture of some wild violets instead.

Another favorite of mine.

These particular violets will soon be overshadowed by Black-eyed Susans. That flower has grown and spread but so far has remained in the same patch of lawn. At least, I hope I have as many as I did last year. I think the chives as well as a couple of really young trees are also fighting for a bit of that soil.

I’m wondering if I should just let these plants duke it out amongst themselves or perhaps try to instill some order in the chaos. Considering the disorder which reigns in the rest of my life, I question how effective my efforts would be. In any case, I’ll be sure to take more pictures and keep you posted. As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

Planned or Not, I Got Flowers!

I thought I would do another Floral Photos Post.  For one reason, my Brown-eyed Susans started to bloom a few days ago, and I have been meaning to share a picture of them.  I noticed a few other blooms this morning, when I was trying to bring a little lawn order into my life (not very successfully,  but let us not worry about that now).  I went outside with my Tablet this evening to see what I could get.

I was pleased to see more blooms.  I only saw one little tiny one a few days ago.  The Brown-eyed Susans kind of magically appeared a couple of years ago.  This year, they are growing great guns.  When the other ones start to bloom,  I will take more pictures.

There were fewer Black-eyed Susans, but I am happy to get any at all.

I planted the Black-eyed Susans on purpose, having purchased the plant some nine years ago at a sale to benefit, I believe, Herkimer County Humane Society.  They have expanded as well, but their area is becoming overgrown with other things.  I must clean it out but fear it is too late in the year to do much good.

These are new.

The Queen Anne’s Lace magically appeared this year.  When I was younger, I used to pick it and put it in food coloring to dye it.

Another uninvited guest.

The purple flowers previously appeared (with no effort on my part) elsewhere in the yard.  These blooms were amongst the chives that share the bed with the Black-eyed Susans.

I was very happy to see these blooms.

I had a hard time getting a good picture of the Rose of Sharon because of where the sun was; I could not see what I was photographing.  This shows the flowers, but does not do the whole bush justice.  I will have to try again one morning.

I am happy to see more blossoms appearing as the summer wears on.  One year I may actually plan my garden to be sure of it happening.  At least, I can hope!  Happy Monday, everyone!

Wednesday Walk

I went running this morning in hopes of making a Running Commentary post. Also for the physical and mental benefits, of course, which is good, because my brain did not want to cooperate on the blog post.  Adhering to my rule of Any Writing Counts,  I finished a letter to my sister Diane (YES, we write snail mail letters to each other; it’s fun, you should try it).  After finally talking myself into walking to the post office with it,  I decided to take my Tablet and get a few pictures.  So here is your Mid-week Pedestrian Post.

It was not as warm out as I had feared, because clouds covered the sky.  A few raindrops were falling, but I hoped for the best. So far so good when I saw some daisies I thought I’d take a shot of.  They looked almost as good as my daisies.

Hmm… not as good a picture as I took of mine either.

I had hoped to get a shot of some peonies in Meyer’s Park, but they were past peak.  I petted an adorable little dog but did not ask if I could take a picture,  because raindrops were falling again (did anybody else just flash on “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head”?) and I figured her person wanted to get home.   Then I thought to take a picture of the sign that makes me flash on the climactic scene in Poltergeist.

“You son of a bitch, you moved the gravestones but YOU DIDN’T MOVE THE BODIES!!!”

At the post office I paused as usual to look at the fliers of local events.

Preview of Comings Attractions

On my way home I paused at three large rocks.  I would love to have a few such boulders for my own meager attempts at landscaping.

Cue jokes about how the rocks in my head are probably as big.

I also got a shot of a front yard garden I particularly admire.

It would be even better if I had a shot of how overgrown this yard used to be.

The raindrops had been starting and stopping,  but I got home before the downpour began in earnest.  I paused to take a picture of our dinosaur-looking tree.  I wanted to document its progress.

It’s so unusual.

The rain is pouring down now, and it is the movie-watching portion of the day.  Happy Wednesday,  everyone.

A Little Walk, a Little Post

I went for a walk with my Tablet and the specific intention of making a Pedestrian Post.  The other reason was that I had not gone running this morning and thought exercise would be a good idea.

When I ran yesterday, I was struck by some overgrown bushes with overgrown grass opposite.   It was not a problem to run through,  but there would not have been room for two abreast.  I reflected that when I was a kid, I would have pretended it was a tunnel.

I had a vivid imagination as a child. I guess I still do.

I turned onto Church Street and walked towards my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners.   First, however, I passed Temple Beth Joseph Synagogue and admired their rhododendron bush.

At least as good as mine if not better.

Next I noticed one of those garden balls I have always liked, in front of a nearby house.  I read a great thriller in which one was figured prominently.

One day I’ll have one in my garden. When I have a garden.

I turned down Main Street at the Four Corners and walked to Basloe Library.  Some major construction is going on there, so I took a couple of  pictures.

I made sure to get the sign in one.

 

I made a mental note of days the library will be closed.

When the construction is completed, I will have to do a whole post about it.  I was at Basloe yesterday (I should have made a post about that!), and it looks like great changes are in store.

My walk was not that long, but I enjoyed it.  Tomorrow I hope to go for a run.  A woman my age needs to keep up on her exercise!  And her blog posts.

AND I’m in a Play!

Well, what’s wrong with being two posts behind, anyways?

Full disclosure:  I have no real excuse to take a blogger’s sick day today.  Yes, I have a headache and lightheadedness.  I ALWAYS have that, at least to some extent.  As I sit here typing away, I admit to myself that I am capable of making some semblance of a blog post. But not a good blog post.  I know what.  It’s Thursday.  I’ll look for some old pictures and go for a Throw-back Thursday kind of a post.

It’s always a good time for skeletons!

Here is one of the first pictures I ever put in this blog.  It was taken at Pumpkin Junction in Sauquoit, NY, one of my favorite places to go in October.  Hey, does talking about October in May make this also a Non-Sequitur Thursday post?  Who says I can’t multi-task!

Mmmmm…. champagne.

Here is a real Throwback — all the way to 1990.  Ooh, and it’s still October.  I didn’t do that on purpose; I was just looking for an old picture of me and Steven.  Look how young and handsome he was!  He is still handsome, of course.

Aren’t they pretty?

Here is a picture from May of 2017.  This must be my front yard, which does NOT look like this right now.  I need to get out and do some yard work.  Will that happen this weekend?  I’m afraid it is not likely.  It is the second weekend for Morning’s at Seven at Ilion Little Theatre.  In fact, I need to get off the computer and take a shower to get ready for our pick-up rehearsal.  At least I made some semblance of a blog post!  If I could only think of a catchy title…

Books and Blooms

On Saturday Steven only worked till two, so we were both able to check out the Books and Blooms fundraiser at the Herkimer County Humane Society. Knowing we would encounter dog lovers there, we took our schnoodle Tabby.

The first things we saw were some lovely hanging baskets, but I was more interested in another perennial. Two years ago I had purchased a Black-eyed Susan at the Humane Society. It has been blooming ever since. Of course I love my container garden, but how delightful it is to have things come up every year.

A nice lady told us all about the various plants they had: what needed more sunlight, what did well in partial shade. We debated a little, but then I wanted to pick out books before I decided which bloom.

You know me and books. It didn’t take long for me to gather an armful. Then I picked the plant I liked best. Its name escapes me as I write this, but I’ll be able to check before I type it into the computer. It wasn’t one I was familiar with, and it wasn’t in bloom so that will be a nice surprise for me when it does.

Steven and I are always happy to support the Humane Society. When it also enhances my garden and my library, what’s not to like? NOTE: The plant I purchased was Coreopsis Route 66. I know I only could have edited the above paragraph to include that, but I thought it was kind of funny that I couldn’t remember what I bought.
