Short Post, Good Wednesday

I KNOW what hump!

To us Monday through Friday schlubs (YES, I am grateful to be one of them; must we go through this every time? Sheesh!), Wednesday has a particular significance. It’s either, “Yay! We’re halfway through!” or, “Rats! We’re only halfway through!”

Recently I have tried giving Wednesday a different meaning by making it my Local Music at Fratello’s night. I believe I mentioned it in yesterday’s post. Today I saw Phil Arcuri, one of my favorite music makers.

Different day, same smile!

The great thing about watching Phil play is that he is having so much fun up there. The man is pure joy, and it is contagious. The above is a picture I took a few weeks ago. I did not get any pictures tonight but enjoyed some good music and a calzone. I took home some leftover calzone and the happy feeling of having an enjoyable evening.

I do not have a whole lot else to say. I think that is OK. For Fratello’s information, arrow back to yesterday’s post. Or search Fratello’s on Facebook. Or wait till the next time I go there to enjoy food and music. It might be soon!

My New Wednesday Thing?

I am thinking of making Wednesdays at Fratello’s Pizzeria in Frankfort a regular thing. Last Wednesday I discovered another talented local musician: Gary Johnson.

He was excellent.

I was sitting at my favorite spot at the bar. I ordered a large antipasto salad, so I would have something for lunch for the next couple of days. A gentleman sat a couple seats down from me and ordered a calzone.

“Rome Calzone!” I said, quoting a local commercial. This guy is auditioning to be a spokesman for Rome Pre-Owned and can’t quite get it right. “Oh, sorry,” I said to the gentleman at the bar, hoping he knew the commercial.

“You’re fine,” he said.

Not many people were there when Gary Johnson started playing.

“That’s OK,” he said. “I’ll take quality over quantity!” I felt flattered.

He kept asking what we wanted to hear. Being unfamiliar with his repertoire, I told him to play his favorite. He responded with one of his favorites: “Tiny Dancer.” I love that song!

My view.

I enjoyed the music very much. When I left, I gave him a little wave and called, “Thank you!” I enjoyed my antipasto as well. Good Music, good food, why wouldn’t I make this my usual Wednesday thing?

More Good Music!

Last Wednesday I decided to treat myself to dinner at Fratello’s Pizzeria in Frankfort, NY again, because I had enjoyed good food and music there the previously. I sat at the bar, ordered a glass of wine and perused the menu. I noticed a musician setting up but did not know who he was.

“It’s Matt Grainger,” the bartender told me. “He’s phenomenal.”

I soon found out that she was right.

He was awesome!

I was amused that he opened the set with “Tequila Sunrise,” because Phil Arcuri (perhaps you read my blog post about his performance at Fratello’s) had opened with “Margaritaville.” I like boozy songs.

I enjoyed White Pizza with the music. I will need to eat out a lot more often in order to work my way through the menus of my favorite restaurants. I guess I don’t have to try EVERYTHING on the menu, but I could come close.

My view while I ate and listened.

One song Matt sang which especially resonated with me was “House at Pooh Corner.” I first heard that song many years ago after working on a play about Winnie the Pooh. I’m still humming the tune a week later!

Full disclosure: when I was writing this post in my head, I had a lot more to say. No doubt I will write more in the future about Fratello’s and Matt Grainger. For now I will say, great music, great food, what’s not to like?

Music, Riggies, Birthday… I Love It!

I went to Fratello’s Pizzeria tonight and I was so happy I did. There I was in Ilion, thinking of the more sensible route of going home (what was I going to eat there anyways?) and then the idea of going to Fratello’s and sitting at the bar occurred to me. The first person I saw when I walked in was Phil Arcuri.

“Hey!” I said, “I impulsively decided to eat here and I thought, ‘Maybe Phil Arcuri will be playing. Nah, I couldn’t get that lucky. I got that lucky!”

I ordered a Pinot Noir and asked if there were any specials. Chicken Riggies! At first I thought, red wine with chicken? Then I thought chicken riggies could stand up to red wine, especially a light one like Pinot Noir. Not that I am anybody’s expert on wine and food pairings. I like wine and I like food. That is the extent of it.

Oh, I enjoyed the music! Phil always looks like he is having such a good time as he plays. A couple of boys seated at a table were enjoying him as much as I was. When I got up to take a picture and danced my way back to my seat, one of the boys danced too.

To add to the festivities, Toni, the bartender, was celebrating her 21st birthday. I asked if I could take her picture for my blog post. She graciously agreed.

I was delighted with my riggies. For one reason, as I pointed out to Toni, I can eat some leftovers on Friday, for carbs before the Pride Stride 5K on Saturday. She had to laugh at that, because there will certainly will be more than one night’s worth of leftovers. But she wished me luck on my 5K.

I had a great night. Thank you, Fratello’s, Toni, and Phil!

Good Music, Good Food

Since I am unemployed, it might behoove me not to eat out very often. Then again, I have to support my local eateries AND my local musicians. With that in mind, I headed to Fratello’s Pizzeria in Frankfort, NY, to hear Phillip Arcuri.

As I sat down at the bar, the bartender told me it was Happy Hour and showed me on the menu where the buy-one-get-one appetizers were listed. Score! I ordered mild buffalo chicken tenders, jalapeno poppers, and a glass of Cabernet. I happily sipped wine waiting for food and music.

He has as much fun as his audience does.

I love watching and listening to Phillip Arcuri. He has a terrific smile and an eclectic play list. He started with Johnny Cash and went on to The Beatles. The audience was having a great time. “Brown-eyed Girl” seemed particularly directed to one lady, especially when he changed the lyric to “Blue-eyed Girl.” I felt a little left out with my green eyes!

The view from where I sat.

I sang along with “Sha-la-la-la-la-la-la,” as did almost everyone else. I sang along with all the words to “Where Oh Where Can My Baby Be?” Steve should have been there for that one!

Ah, deep fried yumminess!

I know I should avoid deep fried, but how could I resist the Happy Hour special? One thing I particularly noticed behind the bar was a rather large cork collector. I should have a cork collector that big!

I should have asked where they got it.

Great Music, Great Food!

Yesterday at work, I noticed a co-worker’s t-shirt read, “Support local music.”  I thought that was definitely something Mohawk Valley Girl should do.  What I didn’t know was that opportunity awaited me that very night!

I had suggested another shop and dine evening, with the dinner part at Fratello’s Pizzeria in Frankfort,  NY.  When I got home from work, Steven told me Phil Arcuri was playing there from 6 to 8 p.m. Perfect!

We sat at the bar, right across from where Phil was going to play, and ordered wine and food.  I got angel hair pasta with a meatball.  Steven got the shrimp basket with fries. Yum! We both brought leftovers home, and I am really looking forward to eating mine!

He is a great musician!

Arcuri plays great tunes from the ’60’s and ’70’s.  I chair danced to most of them and sang along with the ones I knew the words to.  I was not the only one singing along.

Another angle.

I took a few pictures of Arcuri, but I did not manage to catch his smile.  It is a pleasure to watch such a talented musician who is so obviously enjoying himself.  I’m sure everyone there was having fun.

My delightful date for the evening.

I took a picture of Steven.  He tried to take one of me, but the Tablet would not cooperate.  I finally managed to take an ussie (I’m better at ussies than selfies, but not really good at either).

I guess we don’t look too bad.

We had a wonderful time.  I look forward to the next time we hear Phil Arcuri, and to our next great meal at Fratello’s.

Diamond Days Are Coming!

I just got back from a meeting with the Business and Professional Association of Herkimer about the Herkimer Diamond Days Festival Aug. 2 and 3, 2019.  I may be a volunteer.

All kinds of events are planned, most of which take place on North Main Street in Herkimer, NY.  There will be food trucks, vendors and live music. Events run from 5 p.m. to midnight on Friday and from, 10 a.m. to midnight on Saturday.

The festival will feature lots of entertainment.  Jenny & The Buckshots play from 8 p.m. to midnight on Friday.  On Saturday, Scott Raymond is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Lauren Quail from 3 to 5 p.m., and The Dead Bolts from 8 p.m, to midnight.  Additionally, the Happy Haggs and the Dance Center will perform.  Other groups may yet be added (maybe a group I am involved with, but no promises).

Further up Main Street the Herkimer County Historical Society will offer tours of the museum and a book sale in the Eckler House.  The 1834 Herkimer County Jail will also offer tours.  In Meyer’s Park, just two blocks from Main Street,  the Herkimer Elms Lodge will host their annual car show from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

I am still wondering how I can volunteer, and deciding which attractions I want most to enjoy.  If any of my local readers want to get involved, as a volunteer, vendor or entertainer, you can contact the Business and Professional Association of Herkimer at www.HerkimerBPA.com or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/herkimerspoppin/

Pre Posers Post

I was going to wait till I got home to write about The Posers, our favorite local band.  Then I thought of how tired I might be and then I will be six (I really feel I have lost count) posts behind. This way, I don’t make things any worse, and if I do make another post later, I come out ahead.  I won’t get our hopes up about that, though (yeah, right, like anybody HOPES to read more than one Mohawk Valley Girl post in a day!).

Where was I?  Ah, yes, waiting with some impatience to go to The Brass Tack in Frankfort,  NY to hear an awesome band.  To make things even better, we are meeting our friends Phyllis, Jim and Kelly. I LOVE getting together with friends!

I have never been to the Brass Tack but have long wanted to.  It is a very popular spot, so I expect to be quite delighted. The lady that took my reservations was very friendly, so that bodes well.  I hope to do another post about the dinner.

I further hope to make a post about the band.  They play all this great music from the ’80’s and always seem to have such a fun time doing it.  We usually dance our butts off (and I have a lot of butt to dance off!).

So perhaps this has been a dull post about how I am soon to have a wonderful time.  Sorry about that.  I’ll go for a more exciting post later.

Jazz is the Answer!

Music is magic.  I’ve known it for years.  Let me tell you how I was just reminded about it today.

I spent the day at work muddling through.  I don’t know if it was a kind of a migraine or spring allergies kicking, but I felt light-headed and nauseous all day.  Sorry to complain; just giving you the picture.  I thought I would have to take a Blogger’s Sick Day and wondered if I would make it to rehearsal for Morning’s at Seven, the play I am in at Ilion Little Theatre.

Eventually I got some ginger ale out of the machine, which helped the nausea.  I tried to feel thankful that it was light-headedness and not pain.  Counting one’s blessings can go a long way.  I came home and laid down for a while with my heated face mask, then had some coffee and food.

While all this was going on, I knew I had to make a blog post. Of course I did not write one while at work, muddling. Pondering what I could write, I checked my email and Facebook notifications.  I tried to forget how light-headed I was still feeling.  This was difficult, because it is not easy to hold a thought in such a light head (cue jokes about how that must often be the case for me).

As I sat here in front of a blank screen with increasing feelings of panic (I have to leave for rehearsal in less than an hour), Steven said he was going upstairs to lie down (fine wife I am; I didn’t even ask what was wrong).  I asked him to turn off the television or put it on one of the music channels.

“1945,” I suggested, picking the one I have memorized, because it is a year.  Suddenly, jazz was bouncing out of the television, and my fingers were on the keys and ready to type.

It has always been this way with me.  I remember sitting at my parents’ house, when I lived there.  I had Mom’s portable typewriter set up on the coffee table, paper rolled in, novel notes nearby, and I felt blank.  I put on a record album.  It was the soundtrack of StarWars, as I recall (it was the 1970’s).  It turns out, instrumental music is a writing trigger for me.

It is not my only trigger.  Sometimes I can write quite handily on breaks and before starting work with various factory sounds around me.  The ambient noise of a diner or bar works fine.  Sometimes the relative quiet of the library is nice.

Now I am over 400 words and I have about a half hour till I’d better leave.  So I guess this is my Tired Tuesday post.  Not a long whine about not being able to write, but a short story about how I managed to write… something.  Something good?  Well, we don’t ask for miracles on Tired Tuesday.

Post Posers Post

This post was supposed to be titled “Pre Posers Post” and was supposed to be written before we went to the Mohawk American Legion to hear one of our favorite bands.  However, my post-work nap took longer than anticipated, and I was too flustered to make a proper post before our friend Kim picked us up to go to the Legion.

Now, unfortunately, I am a little tired and tipsy to make a really good post.  Still, one must persevere.  We had a marvelous time at the Legion.  We drank, we danced. Kim took a few pictures.

A band shot.

That is scarcely a problem, however, since it is Lame Post Friday.  As regular readers know, however many foolish posts I may have made during the week, I rarely forgo Lame Post Friday.  It is a thing withe me.

Maybe a little less good of a shot.

So here is my Friday Lame Post:  We went to the Mohawk American Legion and heard our favorite band, The Posers, featuring one of our favorite people, Rick DeJohn, on base.  We danced our butts off.

Full disclosure: this photo looked better on Kim’s phone than it looks now.

It was a wonderful Friday.  I can only hope for an equally enjoyable Saturday. In the meantime, I highly recommend The Posers as a good band to listen to.  Happy Friday, everyone.
