Some Kind of Saturday

It was not a particularly Scattered Saturday, because I was just not up to doing much.  I did manage to go for a run, slowly on slushy roads.  I wrote a few postcards.  I ran a few errands. I did a very little house cleaning.  I am watching a few movies.

The highlight of my day was running into one of Steve’s former co-workers.  She gave me a hug and said how sorry she was about Steve’s passing.  She told me how much she liked working with him and agreed with me that he was a really great guy.

When she asked how I was doing, in a rare moment of honesty, I said, “I’m falling apart!”  But then I pulled myself together and said that I appreciated the time we had together, over 30 years.  Of course I treasure the memories.

Being me, I had to add, “If anybody asks my advice about marriage, I’m going to say, ‘Marry a sonofabitch!  Then you won’t feel as bummed when they die!’ ”

She agreed with me and gestured towards her husband, who was, I believe, not listening to the conversation. Teehee!

To any friends and family who may be worried about me (although I am sure they all have much greater concerns):  I am not falling apart all the time.  These things go in spurts.  Anyways, in the best of times I rarely have my act together.  And so I carry on.  Happy Saturday,  everyone!

Not Too Adventuresome, But Fun

Look at me, making my Scattered Saturday post before I get too tired and blow it off.  It has not been a particularly noteworthy Saturday, but you’ll have that.  I plan to give a quick overview of my activities thus far, then continue with my enjoyable day.

I went for a short run in 10 degree weather this morning (according to the sign in front of Trinity Lutheran Church).  It was up to 11 when I did my cool-down walk.  The irony was not lost on me.

Once Steven and I had our acts together (relatively speaking; I am not at any time known for being completely together), we ran a few errands.  We made a quick stop at the post office to mail my post cards, then went on to the drug store and super market. No, we are not ready for Christmas; did you think we would be?

At 1:30 I went to the Hot Spot Salon and Spa, where I had an appointment to get a haircut.  Danielle did a wonderful job.  She was a new stylist for me, but I have never had a bad cut there.

After leaving the salon, I picked up Steven, and we went to Valley Wine and Liquor to taste some French wines.  We bought some Beaujolais as well as a couple other bottles.  We are headed to see our friends, Phyllis and Jim tonight. I said we’d bring the wine.  Our friend Kim joined us at Valley and will join us again tonight.  I love getting together with friends!

So not a particularly adventuresome Saturday, but I am liking it.  I hope your Saturday is as fun.

Running, Errands, Blues… My Scattered Saturday

Well, here’s another non sequitur for us, because I’m making my Saturday post on Sunday morning.  Once again, I offer no excuses.  As Popeye said, I yam what I yam and that’s all what I yam.  I’ll try for a Scattered Saturday post, although, full disclosure:  I did not do that much.

We got up extra early, due to insomnia, but I did not feel too ill-used by my body.  I was looking forward to going for a long run, which I attempted to do after coffee.  The run did not feel as good as I had hoped at first.  I wondered if I would make it for 35 minutes, which was my goal (to equal my last longest run and increase it on Sunday).  I ran up a pretty good hill, felt even worse, kept going anyways, and eventually got into it.  I ended up going for 35 minutes and feeling pretty damn good about myself.  Yay me.  I feel I am in 5K shape now.

After a shower, my recovery beverage of chocolate milk, and a protein-filled breakfast of a cheese omelet, I wrote some post cards.  Steven nicely agreed to walk to the post office with me.  It was still pleasantly cool, although hot temperatures were predicted.  It felt SO GOOD to walk! I love walking!  We passed by the Historic Four Corners, and I mentioned to Steven that I had used pictures of the 1834 Jail and County Courthouse in a recent blog post.  He had read the post.

Other errands we ran included a trip to the bank to deposit a check, a visit to Hannaford to purchase coffee, a graduation card, and a gift bag.  Back home, I took a nap, because of getting up so early.  Then I had to put on a mini fashion show for Steven.  The reason for the show was that I had to figure out what to wear to a cousin’s graduation party we wanted to attend.  After two or three changes of heart as well as shirt, my decision was made.

To get to the party, we had to drive to Rome to catch a ride with Mom and Dad to Baldwinsville.  It is always nice to spend a little time with my parents.  Additionally, they played blues music in the car on the ride.  I love the blues!

It was a very enjoyable Saturday.  I only feel bad that I waited till Sunday morning to make this post.  However, these things happen and we must make the best of them.  I hope you’ll all tune in later, when I make my Wrist to Forehead Sunday post.

On the Streets of Ilion

Yesterday I mentioned running errands as part of the reason I was too beat to blog (ooh, that would be a good title for my next Wuss-out Wednesday) (I bet I already used it). Today (Wednesday) I thought I would wuss out with a short post about What I Did After Work Yesterday.

First I had to leave work late. Not because I was working, but because of Ilion traffic. You see, there is a factory in the middle of the village whose largest shift lets out at 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. I might work there, but this is not a work blog. My point is, there are certain directions it is not easy to drive in Ilion, NY between 3:30 and four p.m.

Actually, things let up somewhat by 3:45, so I was OK. I drove to the Salvation Army Thrift Store (also known as Salvation Armani; I love that expression) with little or no difficulty. I dropped off my donation, also with little or no difficulty. Then I drove back into downtown Ilion.

A little difficulty.

Nothing too bad, but Ilion is kind of weirdly laid out. No offense, Ilion. I grew up in Rome, NY, which I always considered kind of screwy. In Rome none of the streets are quite parallel with the result that many of them do not come out where you expect. In addition, Rome boasts many one way streets, most of them inconveniently located, as far as I’m concerned. So I always thought, growing up in Rome, other towns could hold no terrors for me.

Turns out, not so much. Um, I was not filled with terror; that’s just an expression.

I drove around and up Otsego Street to Kinney Drugs. Kind of a screwy parking lot (no offense, Kinney Drugs), but I managed it. Then I had to figure out how to get to Rite Aid (it was a drug store kind of day). There is a whole complex of stores, doctor offices and other businesses that I have yet to fully figure out. I drove around it.

I guess it didn’t make that good of a story after all (I know I don’t need “of” there, but I kind of like the sound of it). Perhaps if I would have found a street map of Ilion and really explained my course. That would hardly have been wussing out, and it is Wuss-out Wednesday. Hope to see you on Non-Sequitur Thursday (when Rocky the Squirrel says, “Again? But that trick never works!”) (and whoever gets that reference, I’m pretty sure they would only have said “Rocky says,” so, sorry, but I wanted to make sure SOMEBODY got it).
