Mental Meanderings about the Mammary Glands

Today’s Monday Mental Meanderings is in the nature of a Public Service Announcement, with an added attraction for those of you who like to point and laugh at others’ discomfort (you know who you are).  Tomorrow, I go for a mammogram.

NO, I do not expect any of you are crass enough to be amused at the thought of my mammary glands being squished and photographed.  At least, I hope not.  The discomfort I was going to share for your amusement is that I have now gone over a week without coffee.  I cry a little even as I type it.

I don’t suppose non-coffee drinkers will understand, but I know some of you are raising your hands in horror at the thought.  In fact, a number of females have told me they were never advised to stay off caffeine.   When I made the appointment, the nurse told me I could drink decaf, and the reason for it is that the caffeine makes one’s breasts more sensitive.  I don’t remember a mammogram hurting that much to begin with, but it has been at least seven years since I’ve had one.

Ah, here is the Public Service Announcement part:  DON’T BE LIKE ME!  Get your cancer screening tests at the recommended intervals.

Back to the laughing at Cindy portion of the post.  I eased into things by having one small cup of coffee in the morning for two days. Then I had tea for two mornings.  I had some decaf filter bags a co-worker had given me.  Yes, there is still caffeine in decaf.  The lady told me I could drink decaf, so that was what I had for my usual mid-morning cuppa.  On the fourth day, I started having decaf from a filter bag for my first cup as well.  Oh, it does not taste as good.  It does not make me feel content to be out of bed and ready to face the day.  I suffer.

Almost every day, I have been tempted to just have a damn cup of joe.  All these other women have had mammograms and never been told to stay off coffee.  I don’t remember a mammogram hurting and even if it’s awful, it can’t last that long, can it?  I’m a tough girl!  I can take it!

Well, I can be tough enough to stay off coffee, too.  For one reason, I can be pretty stubborn once I have made up my mind to do something.  For another reason, once you have gone so far with something, you might just as well go all the way.

So now I am really, Really, REALLY looking forward to that first cup of coffee.  Alas, my appointment is at three tomorrow afternoon.  I fear if I immediately indulge, it will keep me up all night.  However, Wednesday morning will be a wonderful time for me.

And once again, to all my female readers:  Get your mammograms!

Lee is Undead and I am Brain Dead

It’s that dreadful moment when you want to make your blog post and you realize you have not a thing to write about.  I’m not even sure I can do a Monday Mental Meanderings, because my mental capacity is running low.  I have not done much today.  I went to Basloe Library and printed out the registration form for the Reindeer Run 5K.  I guess I’m going to run it.  I think I’m going to run it.  Maybe I’m going to run it.  We’ll see.

Count Dracula don’t need no stinkin’ napkins!

As I type this (as Truman Capote once said, “That’s not writing, that’s typing”), Dracula is Risen from the Grave is playing on my DVR.  I wrote a blog post about it the last time I watched it.  It stars Christoper Lee, who was purportedly sick of playing Dracula by the time.  I stopped paying attention to it when I watched it that time, too, although I think my write-up on it was pretty fun (or do I flatter myself?).  The other Christopher Lee Dracula movie I have seen and written about was Dracula, Prince of Darkness.  I paid better attention to that one, but with me that isn’t saying much.

This shows how frustrated Lee was to still be playing the Count.

When TCM shows this movie again next October and I DVR it, I think I will try to pay attention to the whole thing.  No promises.  For one reason, am I likely to remember this brain dead moment a year from now?

He looks like he’s worried I might write another blog post about him.

Ah, I did have one more picture of Lee in my Media Library.  I do like to include three pictures.  Tomorrow I will try to include a more coherent blog post.  Happy Monday, everyone.

Monday Movie Matinee

That title is purely for alliterative purposes and not an accurate reflection of this post’s contents.  At least, I will talk about a movie, and today is Monday.  It was a little after matinee hours when we watched the movie, and in fact we watched it on Sunday.  OK, I’m not even going to talk that much about the movie.  This is going to be a really stupid post, but at least I will try my hardest NOT to whine about how I can’t write a decent post today.

We all know I love cheesy movies.  It should come as no surprise, then, that I adore William Castle.  I adore him not only for the cheese factor in his flicks, though:  he is ENTERTAINING!  The man truly loved his audiences and intended to give them a thrill.  I am slowly acquiring a collection of DVDs of Castle movies.  Recently Steven gave me I Saw What You Did (1965), starring the inimitable Joan Crawford.  We watched it yesterday, when I had finished swooning over my blog post.

I don’t know why there are two Joans.

I’ve used this photo before, mostly for the gorgeous necklace.  That is a necklace to die for, or to kill for, or, you know, to find somewhere and pay money for.  Crawford’s part in this movie is really not all that major or even pivotal (my favorite description of a small role).  But it’s Joan Crawford.  I gotta love a movie with Joan Crawford.

Look, there’s that necklace again!

Now that I think of it, Crawford’s role is pivotal, because…  wait a minute.  I did not include a spoiler alert.  I won’t put one in now.  Watch I Saw What You Did, the 1965 version.  It’s a fun flick.  William Castle, I salute you.

Doesn’t he look like he’s having fun, too?

I close with a picture of the master himself.  I may watch another William Castle movie tonight.  Happy Monday, everyone.

Monday Meander

So I got home from work and wrote my weekly postcards that I usually do on Saturday (don’t judge).  Steven graciously agreed to walk to the post office with me.  One reason I wanted to walk was to go through Meyers Park and check out the historical marker that said a graveyard was moved to put a park there.

I have noticed that marker before, notably while running.  I flash on Poltergeist when I see it.  Spoiler alert!  Stop reading here if you have not seen Poltergeist.  When we finally find out the source of all the haunting, we learn that it is because the unscrupulous real estate developer moved a graveyard but only moved the gravestones, not the bodies.  As I run through Meyers Park, I irresistibly hear Craig T. Nelson screaming, “You son of a bitch, you DIDN’T MOVE THE BODIES!!!”  Imagine my chagrin when we caught part of Poltergeist on TCM on Halloween and I discovered that that is not the actual line.  But he does call the guy a son of a bitch, so I am not completely full of beans.

Where was I?  Oh it is a Monday Mental Meanderings.  We took a walk, we got some food, I want to sit here and crochet and watch television.  I see that my husband Steven is looking at the movies.  I’d better get off the computer before he picks out something I do not want to see. Happy Monday, everyone.

Another Blogger’s Sick Day

I just can’t do it.  I can’t let today be the day I don’t make a post.  Oh, I know, there have been a few days I’ve missed, due to computer problems or, well, falling asleep.  I made my post for those days as early as possible the next morning.  I thought briefly of doing that today, but, well, here I am, here is the laptop, my fingers are not broken, I have  internet connection, and I am awake.

Full disclosure:  I don’t want to be.  I think I am coming down with a cold or something.  I’m tired, I have a sick headache, I feel inclined to do nothing but whine.  My dear husband, Steven, suggested I take today off.  It was a kind, loving suggestion.  But I just feel if I take one day off, I will take all the days off, and then I will not be a blogger any more.  I suppose that would not be such a great loss to the blogosphere.  There are plenty of bloggers out there, many of them better than I am in different ways.

So I begin to ask myself, why am I still posting every day?  I started this blog in May of 2011 with the intention of posting every day for one year.  I don’t know what I thought was going to happen after a year, but it seemed a good goal to set for myself.  Now six years and a couple of months later, I am still at it.  Sometimes I feel a little proud of myself for that.  Then I think of all the foolish posts I’ve made along the way (YES, I realize this is one of them! Sheesh!), and I wonder.

However, when one is coming down with a miserable cold, it is not the best time to question one’s life choices.  One is likely to feel the only good choice would be to crawl into bed, pull up the covers, and cry.  Well, at least I won’t do the last one.  For one reason, it dehydrates one to cry, and it is important to stay hydrated, especially when ailing.  I am sure some readers will feel I might just as well have taken tonight off (you know who you are). No matter.  I am counting this as my Monday Mental Meanderings, and I am going to make myself some hot tea.  Thank you for tuning in.

Meandering around the Marketplace

This picture didn’t turn out as clear as I had hoped.

I have driven by this old barn on Route 5 between Herkimer and Little Falls many times.  I guess it has always been an antique place, but I had never caught it when it was open.  Well, it has opened again as The Old Barn Marketplace, and I have been there twice.  Saturday I took a few pictures of Halloween stuff I thought I would share, in the spirit of the season.

Numerous vendors offer a variety of goods: furniture, collectibles, antiques, vintage clothing, artwork and more.  There is also a cafe, where I enjoyed a cup of coffee before I took a walk around.  The first thing that caught my eye was a delightful skeleton.

I gotta love a skeleton in a tie.

A larger group of Halloween stuff resided near the counter.  I tried to get a shot of the whole thing but don’t know how successful I was.

A fellow behind the counter was a little worried he’d gotten in the shot.

Apart from the Halloween stuff, The Old Barn Marketplace is a fascinating place.  I walked all around the first and second floors before discovering that here is also stuff in the basement.  I guess I should have taken more pictures.  In fact, the whole place deserves a better write-up than I seem to be giving it.  In my defense, it is Monday, the day I usually just Mentally Meander.  I can always write more about the Marketplace later.

The Old Barn Marketplace is located at 6266 State Rt. 5, Little Falls, NY, phone number 315-508-5254.  They are open every day from 10 .m. to 5 p.m. For more information, you can visit their Facebook page.

My Weekend: Ritz to GRAVE

Me and my disreputable LiFT friends.

I thought if I led with a really cool picture, my readers would forgive me for another post where I ain’t got nuthin’.    Yes, I said “ain’t got nuthin’.”  A double negative, the word “ain’t,” and a phonetic spelling of lazy pronounciation.  Lots of no-nos!  Ah-ha-ha-ha-ha! (That was my evil laugh, in case you did not recognize it.)

I had a busy, tiring weekend.  The above photo is members of LiFT Theatre Company participating in the Ritz and Ragtime fundraiser for the Landmarks Society of Greater Utica.  That was my Saturday night, and I spent a good portion of Saturday afternoon getting my costume back together and generally fretting about it, as I tend to do about such things.  We had a lot of fun and got to see one of the famous mansions at Rutger Place.  I’d like to find out more about the Landmarks Society and participate in future fundraisers.

Sunday was taken up with A G.R.A.V.E. Murder, the murder mystery fundraiser for the Herkimer County Historical Society.  That was a lot of fun, too.  We met at my house, so naturally I had to fix a few snacks.  We had a lot of laughs, too.  Now I must get on with learning my lines.  You might think I would already know them, since, you know, I wrote it.  But not so much.  Anyways, it will be easier than learning Shakespeare.

Expect to hear a lot about this in the next few weeks.

After A G.R.A.V.E. Murder, I may take a break from theatrics for a while (even from being a drama queen in real life, if I can manage it).   Many of my friends shake their heads or laugh and point when I say that, but I really need to work on some other things in my life.  On the other hand, if the Landmarks Society wanted to do a murder mystery fundraiser…

Nobody’s Perfect

Likewise blog posts.

Yes, it is another post about How I Can’t Write a Post Today.  Or much of anything else.  However, I do have a fascination with writing about not writing.  By the way, I stole the above image from a Facebook page I follow called Writing About Writing.  The fellow that runs it writes a blog, but full disclosure:  I don’t follow the blog.  Come to think about it, none of the blogs I follow are about writing per se.  I wonder what that says about me?  To answer that would probably call for some half-baked philosophy more suitable to Lame Post Friday than Monday Mental Meanderings.

As you may guess by the plethora of lame posts lately, I continue to have difficulty with my writing.  Sometimes it is a question of just not sitting down and getting to it.  However, whenever I do sit myself down, it seems that nothing happens.  I know, one must persevere, and I will.  I’ll let you know as soon as I get some results.

I would like to share with you the actual projects I am having difficulties with.  However, that would be to advertise to the world how close I have come to the deadlines and nothing to show for it.  Oh dear, what if the people I am writing for read this blog?  I’m hard at work!  I’ve finished those projects!  Everything is great!  Not writing?  Me? You must be daft! I am prolific as the day is long!

They say you mustn’t worry what people think, about writing and everything else.  However, right now, the thought of people counting on me, feeling certain that I have written or am writing wonderful things for them… well, it makes me want to finish off this blog post and get back to work on them.  Writer’s Block?  Pshaw!  Never heard of it!

Probably NOT the Last Time I’ll Talk About the Tempest

I can still do a Mental Meanderings Monday even if I did have the day off.  Judge me if you like, I’m doing it.  I have had the most delightful lazy three-day weekend imaginable.  I know, I know, not everybody had a three-day weekend.  I’ve had plenty of jobs where I did not get all the traditional Monday holidays off. I’m not gloating, I’m APPRECIATING!  Sheesh!

Now where was I?  Ah yes, about to share a picture I just saw on my Facebook newsfeed.

Robbie the Robot, what’s not to like?

I’ve seen Forbidden Planet, and I have to say: not the cheesy delight I was hoping for.  The movie took on new meaning for me when I was cast in LiFT Theatre Company’s production of The Tempest (I believe I have mentioned that play once or twice), because I have always heard that Forbidden Planet was based on or an update of that play.  I even heard on one of my monster movie Facebook groups (I forget which one) that William Shakespeare is even listed in the end credits of the movie.

Well, I don’t remember a whole lot about the movie (I may have written a blog post about it, and I may muster the energy to look for it), but I gotta say, I do not see a whole lot of similarities.  And I am not real anxious to re-watch the movie to look for them.  Oh, I don’t rule it out.  I’m just not going to seek it out.

I’ve shared this picture before, but I don’t mind seeing a shirtless young man more than once.

This is our Caliban, for whom Robbie the Robot is the ostensible parallel (don’t you just love the word “ostensible”?).  I can’t say the resemblance is striking, unless I am indulging in irony (although, admittedly, many of us do not get enough irony in our diet)

Look how happy we all are!

I close with a picture of our Tempest cast, immediately following our final performance, at the Herkimer Elks Lodge, this past Friday.   One may observe that this is kind of a thin post.  Then again, it is Monday, albeit a holiday Monday for me.  Well, what do you want from me?  I’ve had a lazy weekend and I’ve got post play let-down!  Please tune in tomorrow, when I will strive NOT to have a Tired Tuesday post.

Roger Corman on Mental Meanderings Monday

It is getting later and later in the day on Monday and I still have not done my blog post.  It will, for sure, be Monday Mental Meanderings, but I fear my mental is far from meandering.  It is still.  It has stopped.  I looked for some monster movie pictures to pep up my post a little. I did not find any.  Whatever will I do?

The movie is not as sexy as the poster would make it seem.

At last! I found something! This is the movie we watched last night, a Roger Corman confection which I enjoyed very much.  I must say, the monster was much scarier in anticipation than in sight.  When we finally saw the monster, we laughed and laughed.

I believe there is a sexy brunette or two in this flick.

This is a movie we watched some time previously.  Earlier today I found a write-up I started about it.  I worked a little more at it but fear I must watch the movie again before I can finish it properly.  Who me?  Watch a cheesy movie again?  SAY IT AIN’T SO!

“That won’t qualify for the Dolgeville Violet Festival.”

I close with a shot from another favorite Roger Corman film of mine:  Little Shop of Horrors.  I have little use for the musical, on stage or on screen, but I adore the original cheesy movie.

I guess I don’t have much else to say.  Friends, it’s Monday.  I managed to NOT whine about how I can’t seem to write a blog post today.  I’m afraid that is the best we can hope for. But perhaps I will see you all on Tired Tuesday.
