Everybody Is So Excited for Me to Get Murdered!

I thought I would give a brief update of Prescription: Murder the play I am in at Ilion Little Theatre (ILT).  Rehearsals are going very well.  Characters and relationships are developing, the set is looking good, and we are all having a lot of fun.

The little chippy!

That’s my husband and his girlfriend.  I sure don’t have good luck with stage husbands!  In 2015 it was William Druse, when I played the title character in Roxy.  He was abusive and a lousy provider, but at least he didn’t kill me.  Yeah, I killed him.  What’s your point?

I am jealous of the typewriter.

That is Dr. Fleming’s efficient secretary, Miss Petrie.  I don’t like to tell too much about the characters and how the plot unfolds.  I feel a little bad that I gave away that I get murdered, but it is in the title after all.  Other members of ILT are very encouraging to me.  They are all looking forward to me getting killed!

Guess which one is Columbo.

Prescription: Murder will be presented at Ilion Little Theatre, 13 Remington Ave., Ilion, NY, March 28, 29 and 30, and April 4, 5 and 6, 7:30 Fridays and Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays.  For more information go to ILT’s website http://www.ilionlittletheatre.org or visit their Facebook page.

Recipe for a Blog Post Anyways!

Sunday I went to the Herkimer County Historical Society where they were celebrating the launch of their new cookbook, Home Town Recipes From Our Table to Yours!  They had several of the recipes represented, and encouraged me to sample whatever I wanted.  Yum!

I just love the cover!

Alas, I did not take any pictures other than of the cookbook itself, but I sampled carrot cake, rhubarb cake, and chicken wing dip.  I can’t wait to try those and other recipes in the book.

While there, I chatted with Cassie Castle about this spring’s murder mystery, which I am supposed to be writing to benefit the society.  Naturally I am having trouble with it.  However, Sunday morning when I noticed the cookbook launch and decided to attend, something clicked in my brain.  As I washed the dishes and did a few other chores, in my head a voice was saying, “Cookbook… cookbook.”  And the next thing I knew I was making notes and starting a script with the tentative title, Recipe for Murder.

Of course there are still several hurdles to get over before I am once again murdering for fun and non-profit.  For one thing, I need to field a cast.  Oh yeah, and finish the script.  Maybe if I make one of the recipes in my new cookbook, I can get even more inspired.

After This, Frangelica Can Live!

I killed Frangelica for the last time on Saturday, but what a bumpy road to get there!

First I was down an actor, for a tragic reason.  I share this because I feel it is important to shine a light on the issue.  The actor lost a good friend to suicide.  Even to type the words makes me feel pain over so many lives lost, and I feel we must do whatever we can to help.  We can’t always help everybody, but we can do what we can do.  So I mention the issue here, and I hope to find more to do; raise money, raise awareness, walk in a march, be there for anybody who needs someone to listen.

Back to Frangelica, I was able to find another actor to step in last minute.  He rose magnificently to the occasion wearing an excellent costume and bringing all his acting chops to the character.  He read from the script, of course, but that scarcely mattered.  Afterward he said he only did it because I am a friend.

“No, you did it because YOU are a friend!” I told him.

But that was not the end of the bumpy road.

The show was at Acacia Village in Utica, NY.  I had gotten a ride to our one rehearsal there, and we had gotten a little lost, so I allowed extra time on Saturday.  Good thing I did.  I miscalculated backing out of my driveway and got hung up on a snowbank!  Oh no!  I grabbed a shovel and started to dig.  A car had stopped in the street, unable to get by me due to a parked car.  A young man got out of the car and started to help me dig.  I found another shovel and we both dug, then he pushed while I gave it a LITTLE gas (being uncomfortably aware of that parked car), repeat process.

A neighbor lady came over with a shovel and helped.  The young man’s mother got out of the other car and helped too.  The neighbor brought over some salt she pushed under the wheels.  Eventually I tore pieces off a cardboard box I had in the back seat (it’s been there for weeks; I meant to bring it into the house to aid in my organizational efforts) and put those under the wheels.  Finally with the cardboard and the three of them pushing, the car moved!  And it didn’t hit the parked car!  I maneuvered it very carefully to park it on the side of the road while I put away the shovels.

The neighbor lady and the young man were busily shoveling down the lump of snow I had gotten hung up on (left over from my inadequate shoveling job that morning).

“I can get that,” I told them, feeling bad that they were making such an effort on my behalf.  I guess they did not want me to get hung up on my return home, because they continued.  I thanked them profusely, feeling so happy that there are such nice people in the world.

Heading on to Acacia Village, I did not exactly get lost, but it took longer than expected, while my cell phone dinged away with text messages.  I do NOT text and drive!  When the phone rang, I pulled over and answered it.  My replacement actor was lost.  I advised him as best I could and hurried to the venue.  When he called again after I had arrived (which I knew he would, because I was sure my directions were inadequate), I handed my phone over to another actress who was more familiar with the territory.  He soon arrived, and we all breathed a sigh of relief.

Of course things did not go smoothly after that.  We were using two cordless microphones, because some of our audience had hearing problems, and we were unused to them.  We got confused a couple of times over entrances and lines.  However, the audience enjoyed it and we actors managed to have a good time too.

My weekend was enlivened by a few other mishaps, which I will perhaps cover in future blog posts.  In the meantime, I see this has been a longer post than usual and with no illustrations to break up the narrative.  If you have read the whole thing, I thank you most sincerely.

Pre Frangelica Jitters

Good afternoon and may I have your attention please for a Pre-Performance post.  Have I done one of those before?  I mustn’t take the time to go back and check; I just looked at the clock, and I must allow time to fuss with my hair and dither over my costume.  First, I hope, a cup of coffee.  I just put it on to brew.  I have traded coffee for Irish Breakfast Tea the past two mornings, so I have perhaps inflated expectations of how wonderful this coffee is going to taste.

The performance, as regular readers know, is Curtains for Frangelica, the murder mystery we are reviving from this past fall to present for the New Hartford American Legion tonight. I believe proceeds will go toward DAV vans.  I only do these murder mysteries for charity, not profit.  Killing for a Cause?  You alliterate.

Throwing in a picture to pep up the post.

This is a picture from when we were rehearsing the show last fall at Herkimer Elks Lodge.  It was fun then, and I have every reason to expect it to be fun now.  There is really no reason to feel nervous.  But of course I do.

Or will it be curtains for me?

The last I heard the show had not sold out.  If any local readers are suddenly inclined to attend, tickets may still be available.  New Hartford American Legion’s phone number is 315-736-7041.  They are located at 8616 Clinton St., New Hartford, NY.

I think my coffee is ready.  I know my nervousness will vanish and I will have a wonderful time once we start.  I only hope I can find a pair of pantyhose without runs in them!

Rehearse Yesterday, Skate Another Day?

I missed making my Tired Tuesday post but perhaps could manage a Wuss-out Wednesday.  We shall see.  Yesterday I should have made a Post Rehearsal Post about  Curtains for Frangelica, the murder mystery we are presenting this Saturday at New Hartford America Legion.  I reminded myself at least eight times to take a picture of rehearsal for a blog post but alas did not.

But we did rehearse and will present the murder mystery.

Just to give another shout-out, Curtains for Frangelica will be presented Saturday, Jan. 25, at New Hartford America Legion.  For tickets call 315-736-7041.  I believe they still have seats available.

Rehearsal last night went pretty well, so it is too bad I did not take a couple pictures to make a full post about it, because I do not have much else going on.  I did write a short article for The Daily Sentinel, which they said was OK, about the ice rink at the Frankfort Marina.  I guess that would be a good thing for Mohawk Valley Girl to say something about.

Too cold for anybody to skate the day I was there

I was disappointed but not surprised to find nobody there skating when I went to get a couple pictures.  For one reason, it was before school let out.  For another, it was quite cold.  I may try to find a pair of ice skates and take advantage of one of the village rinks.  It would make a good blog post (preview of coming attractions).  Don’t get your hopes up to see a picture of me looking foolishly awkward on the ice, though.  How could I take a selfie at such a time?

Wrist to Forehead After Wine

Who me? Drink and type?  I am hoping I can manage at least a Wrist to Forehead Sunday post, but I confess, I went to the Elks Lodge in Herkimer, NY and indulged in a few glasses of wine. I am in the process of becoming an Elk and have been having a lot of fun going to the Lodge and being sociable.  Regular readers may remember I have been to the Elks Lodge previously to rehearse and present murder mysteries, so I have met several members and gotten a very good impression of the place.

A previous murder mystery at the Herkimer Elks Lodge.

The murder mystery I am currently in rehearsals for is at the New Hartford American Legion.  I hope to be  working on one to be presented at the Herkimer Elks Lodge this spring (preview of coming attractions).  I was working on writing it earlier today but shall not share any teasers at present.

Me being dramatic in another setting.

I have also done Shakespeare at the Herkiuner Elks Lodge with LiFT, Little Falls Theatre Company.  The above picture was not taken at the Elks, but it was of the last play we did at the Elks.  I think LiFT needs to do another Shakespeare play, both at Little Falls and at Herkimer Elks.  I’ll have to work on that.

So this post is at least over 200 words, a little scattered, but you’ll have that.  I think it is okay for a Wrist to Forehead Sunday.  If you disagree, feel free to take me to task in a comment.

More Curtains for Frangelica!

I return to the blogosphere after an unexcused absence with a Post-Rehearsal Post.  It is in fact, the next day after rehearsal, a day in which I have already overslept and am feeling flustered about several things that I have left undone and cannot quite settle on the order in which to do them.  As I say, it is not easy being me.  Some days it is not even all that entertaining, but you’ll have that.

Picture to denote passage of time while I do at least one thing I should have done yesterday.

This is my wonderful cast from Curtains for Frangelica, the murder mystery we are presenting at the New Hartford American Legion in a scant two weeks, Saturday, Jan. 25.  Yikes, it’s more like a week and a half! The above picture is from when we were in rehearsals to present it at the Herkimer Elks Club to benefit the Herkimer County Historical Society.  We rehearsed at the legion last night, and it went very well.

From the Legion bulletin board.

They did not have any fliers we could take to hang up, but a cast member snapped a shot of the one they had hanging in the bar (it’s a really nice bar, by the way; if I lived in New Hartford, I would totally join that legion!).  In case you can’t read it, the New Hartford American Legion is located at 8616 Clinton St., New Hartford, NY.  The show is Saturday, Jan. 25 at 5:30 with dinner at 6 p.m.  Tickets are $45.  There were still tickets available as of last night.  The legion phone number is 315-736-7041.

I am definitely looking forward to offing Frangelica again!

Spice on the Snow?

Lame Post Friday has always been the place for random observations, and today I have one!  As I was taking a walk this afternoon, I looked ahead saw something red on the snow.  Was it blood (obviously the first thought of one obsessed with true crime as I am)?   Had somebody gotten sick on their way home (obviously these things happen sometimes)?  What else could it be? As I got up to it, I saw that it was red powder on a freshly plowed snowy sidewalk.  I have never heard of paprika being used as an ice melt or means of friction.  Who knew?

Alas that I did not pause to take a picture.

Unrelated snow picture.

I just scrolled through my Media Library looking for a picture of snow, since I really have nothing else for this blog post.  I took a long-ish walk today, but I did a Pedestrian Post yesterday.  I stopped at the Herkimer County Historical Society, so I can give a shout-out to them.

The Suiter House.

I will no doubt have more to blog about the Historical Society as time goes on.  For one reason, I am hoping to to a murder mystery for them this spring.  I may do some other volunteer work for them, just to keep myself busy.  I will no doubt get some blog posts about from these endeavors.

In the meantime, this must do for my Lame Post Friday post.  Happy beginning of the weekend to you all!

Operator Error in a Pre-Rehearsal Post

I kind of forgot to make a blog post on Monday but I will try to make a Pre-Rehearsal Post now.  I am soon to go to a rehearsal for our murder mystery Curtains for Frangelica.  It is a revival of the mystery we did last fall for the Herkimer County Historical Society.  One of my actors felt it was a shame to only do the show once, so she asked the New Hartford American Legion if they would like us to stage it for them.  They said yes.

A rehearsal from when we did it  before.

We started talking about this last fall, right after the Herkimer performance, but the Legion decided the end of January would be a better time for the event.  I found my script quite by accident the day we were going to the Legion to discuss the matter, and promptly lost it again.  However, I found it (again quite by accident) a couple of days ago, and all my lines were quite familiar.  Of course a few changes will have to be made.  We can discuss that at rehearsal.

Oh this is swell.  I was looking around my Media Library for a more lively picture of a murder mystery but it seems to be stuck.  No doubt I clicked on something too many times or some such thing.  It is always Operator Error with me.

However, I see I am over 200 words, and I have enough time to look over my lines again before my ride gets here.  I always say a short, dull post is better than no post at all.  I admit I may be wrong about that.  Discuss amongst yourselves.

Historical Society to the Rescue!

Fine daily blogger I am.  I missed three days.  At first I put “several” but then I counted.  Three is more like a few. I don’t make the rules.

I think Santa likes me anyways. He’s not a big reader of blogs, so I hear.

I threw in a photo right away.  This is Santa Claus, who was at the Herkimer County Historical Society last Saturday.  They were also selling cookies.  Yum!  I was in a perfectly dreadful mood and had been for some days.  I did not know what to do, but I wanted to support the Society, so I walked over.  The volunteers gave me a warm welcome (they know me from the murder mysteries) and invited me to hang out with them for as long as I wanted to.  Of course I did and had a wonderful time.

I wish the picture was a little clearer.

The Suiter House was beautifully decorated.  Of course I took a few pictures.

I don’t know who the lady in the portrait is.

We talked about Christmas villages, and how they tend to grow, sometimes out of control.  I thought the one on their mantle was just right.

No, I did not sit on his lap!

I did not tell Santa what I wanted for Christmas, because quite frankly, I have been bad all year and do not expect any presents, although I know Santa is something of a pushover, so I might in fact get something (that is not a run-on sentence, although I suppose a period might not have come amiss).

I felt very Christmasy and happy after my visit to the historical society.  I hope to volunteer there in the new year, to a greater extent than putting on the murder mystery.  That would probably make for some good blog posts.

The Herkimer County Historical Society is located at 400 and 406 Main St., Herkimer, NY.  You can visit their website at www.herkimercountyhistory.org
