It’s a Lame Story

So there I was, sitting at work, determined not to indulge in Lame Post Friday. I’ve had a week of stupid posts!  I was going to have a Mohawk Valley adventure and do a REAL post!  There were all kinds of things I could do.

For example, I could make my annual trip to Melfe’s Shoe Service for my work shoes.  That would be right on the way home.  Or I could go the other way but still in Ilion, and have a cup of Moose River Coffee.  Mmmm… hot coffee would set me up for the evening.  Or, right next to Moose River Coffee is Beer Belly Bob’s.  I could go with a different beverage, although I would have to go home to drink it.  If I wanted to drive a little further, I could go to Original Herkimer Cheese and get some Chudder (tastes like cheddar, spreads like butter).  Yum!  I could also see if the Ilion Farmer’s Market at Clapsaddle Farm is still open.  It is under new ownership.

Perhaps I could go home first and change my clothes.  Then I could take a drive to Little Falls.  I have been wanting to go to Huckleberry Letterpress again.  I could probably write about them for Mohawk Valley Living magazine (I think my deadline is soon).  There are several other shopping destinations in Little Falls:  Prima Donna’s Boutique, Rochette, the Selective Eye at Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts, Little Falls Antique Center and the Shops at 25 West.  Hmm… maybe I was getting a little too ambitious.

I was still undecided as I left my place of employment.  To make a long story short (I know: too late), I went home and posted the following on Facebook:

So I sit at work thinking, “It’s going to be even colder tomorrow. I should do my shit today and stay home tomorrow.” Then I leave work, and it’s face-hurting cold and the roads suck, and I think, “What have I got to do that is so goddam important, anyways?”

Lucky for Me it’s Lame Post Friday!

I do not think it is such a bad thing to sip and post on Lame Post Friday. Haven’t you people ever heard of Happy Hour?  Just kidding.  We did not go to Happy Hour.  But Steven and I are sitting around having a couple of drinks with our friend Kim at our house. We enjoyed some munchies too, plus a lot of laughs.  Then I thought I had better go ahead and make my blog post, before I forgot to.  I did not want to miss two blog posts in one week.  Lucky for me it’s Lame Post Friday (ooh, that would be a good title, wouldn’t it?).

We have been talking about our respective plans for New Year’s Eve.  I was trying to explain to Kim about our traditional New Year’s Eve movies.  Of course, one cannot expect everyone to understand one’s particular movies.  I don’t always understand other people’s choices for their special times.  However, for the sake of having a blog post, I thought I would share with you ours.  I have no doubt mentioned most of these before, but let’s just look at this as one more holiday tradition.

At the top of my list is Sunset Boulevard.  For one reason, a pivotal scene takes place on New Year’s Eve.  Also, in an early scene, Gloria Swanson serves William Holden champagne and caviar, and later Holden assures a friend that there is “always champagne on ice.”  It is sweet champagne, and I prefer Extra Dry, but I try to gloss over that fact.  Also high on the list is Mystery of the Wax Museum, which opens on New Year’s Eve, although champagne is not involved.  However, we may also watch a movie I like to watch with champagne all year: Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope.  It has nothing to do with New Year’s Eve, but champagne is prominently featured.  I might also suggest King Kong.  This movie does not involve New Year’s Eve or champagne, but it stars Fay Wray, who is also the star of Mystery of the Wax Museum.  The last movie we might consider is Sleepy Hollow, or, as I like to call it, The Headless Everybody.  This is a New Year’s Eve movie mostly because we watched it one New Year’s Eve many years ago.

So this is my Friday Lame Post.  I must get back to drinks and laughs.  Happy Friday, everyone.

Late, Lame, but Not Lean

Yesterday I took a real Blogger’s Sick Day.  Judge me if you like, but one can only do so many things when one has a migraine.  Determination will only take you so far.  I was going to say “discipline,” but we all know I am notoriously undisciplined, while nobody refutes that I have a marvelously thick skull.  Maybe that’s my problem with all the headaches.

Just to throw this in there:  I AM doing something about the headaches.  I shall not elaborate on what, because, you know, HIPAA and all that.

Last night I felt incapable of even Lame Post Friday. How unlike me.  It was the last day of work before what I will call Christmas shut-down. I rather thought more people would be feeling more giddy, myself included.  I knew I should have brought cookies.  There is nothing like home-baked cookies to spread the Christmas spirit, as well as to add to the hip-spread of people who really need no help in that direction, myself included.

Yes, I have been sadly aware that this is a HUGE time of year for getting, well, huge.  I knew it was coming; the calendar is remarkably predictable each year, and I have been around quite a number of years.  So did I prepare by dropping a few pounds ahead of time (yes, I KNOW yo-yo dieting is a terrible thing; I’m only talking about five pounds, is that such a problem?)?  Of course not!  I’m still trying to drop the few pounds I put on last Christmas!

So this is my Friday Lame Post:  a late lament about my weight.  I believe that is sufficiently lame, yet universal enough that I hope some people are at least mildly entertained.  For those of you who are not so plagued by those pounds (either by not putting them on or not caring if you do), you may bask in the glow of superiority.   We’ll call that just another service I provide.

Is It Friday Already, Finally?

Yes, it is another Late, Lame post.  I wonder if I should make a sub-category to reflect that?  Nah, I’ll just post.  I confess, I had my doubts this week as to whether I would make it to Friday, or indeed, if Friday would ever come.  You’ll have that.

So with Friday came the deadline for Mohawk Valley Living magazine.  If I was a really good writer, like I pretend I am, this would not matter, because I would have already written my article or articles and submitted them.  And here we come to the ugly truth about me. However, I did what I could and submitted something that I feel is not completely contemptible.

Then I had to rush into some nice-looking clothes, because my friend, Kim, was picking me up to go to a wine tasting at Valley Wine and Liquor.  It was Adirondack Winery of Lake George.  I have tasted their stuff before but never been to the winery.  I must get there one day, though, because they have some dry wines that are not carried by the liquor store so were not available for tasting.

From the wine tasting, Kim and I headed to the Herkimer Elks Lodge for Cucina Berto’s Tom & Jerry Night.  Steven joined us already in progress.  We had a couple Tom & Jerry’s, and Steven and I each had a cup of Italian Wedding Soup.  Yummy!

And now we are home.  I’m afraid this post will read like a Flustered Friday, and indeed, parts of it felt flustered to me.  However, it was a fun Friday, and I am looking forward to an equally fun Saturday.  I’ll write a blog post about it.

Ready for the Run? Or Just Lame?

Well, I’m all carbed up for tomorrow’s Reindeer Run 5K, part of Christmas in Little Falls.  I confess to feeling a little nervous about the whole thing.  I’m not even sure of my outfit.  Regular readers know how I obsess over what I’m going to wear, with the final results far from reflecting the efforts involved.  At least I found my “Dashing” t-shirt.  It is a large reg t-shirt with a penguin and the word “Dashing.”  Steven gave it to me for birthday one year when we lived in Georgia (he often gives me Christmas for my birthday).  I think it is a perfect t-shirt for a Christmas run.  Get it?  “Dashing through the snow…”

I have a green long-sleeved running shirt to wear under the t-shirt.  Actually, it’s kind of teal, but I think it is green enough for a Christmas run (which is not the same thing as when the light turns yellow as I reach it and I say, “Ah, it’s green enough”).  I think silver leggings.  Again, they are not really silver, kind of black shot with silver.  OK, they’re grey.  I’m going to call them silver.  I hope I can find a pair of my winter running socks in the clean laundry (no, I have do not fold all my laundry promptly, sue me!).

I carbed up with angle hair pasta with basil pesto, topped with onions, rainbow peppers, and mushrooms, which I roasted in pesto.  I perhaps started them a little too soon, with the result that some of the onions were a little crispy.  I put the onions in first, while I cleaned and sliced the peppers, then I put the peppers in.  I didn’t put the mushrooms in till the last twenty minutes or so. I put grated cheese on mine.  It was a pretty good supper.

So how is this for my Lame Friday Post?  A little about the race, a little bit of cooking.  It will have to do.  Perhaps tomorrow I will have things to report about Christmas in Little Falls.  As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

Late and Lame, but Here’s a Lizard

I thought of that title while I was logging into WordPress.  I figured I couldn’t just call it  “Late and Lame,” because I’ve used that title before.  Then I remembered I have some Godzilla pictures in my Media Library. Godzilla on a Friday, there could be no possible objection.

“Hello there, blog readers!”

Steven and I just got back from Ilion Little Theatre’s production of The Christmas Spirit.  I must write a whole blog post about it, but I am far too tired to do that now.   Anyways, I have to figure out what I want to say.  Godzilla is no help to me there.

“What do you mean no help? I’m a real helpful guy, give me a chance!”

I tried to write a real blog post earlier.  It did not go well.  Then again, it is Lame Post Friday.  How can I do a real post then?  I like to do silly things on Friday.  Random observations and half-baked philosophy.  I think saying that Godzilla is no help is one or the other.

When in doubt, throw in another picture.

In case I don’t write a real post about the play, it is The Christmas Spirit at Ilion Little Theatre, Dec 3, 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m., and Dec, 4 and 10 at 2 p.m.  Tickets are available at Eventbrite.

Not a Story But Maybe a Blog Post

On the post I made earlier today (which, I KNOW should have been published yesterday; I already apologized for that, stop giving me a hard time already!) (you know who you are), I forgot a few of our dear little scarecrows.  I append a picture of them now, and will share their story, which I made up out of my head.

Steve won the middle guy out of a claw machine. I don’t remember where we got the other two.

The two bigger scarecrows are boyfriend and girlfriend.  The little one is the younger brother of the boy scarecrow.  The girl scarecrow thinks the little brother is adorable and is always happy to see him.  Her boyfriend is less pleased, because he wants to be alone so he can kiss her.

I guess that is not a very long story.  In fact, it is not a story at all but merely the situation.  I suppose I could come up with a story about how the boyfriend sends his little brother away, and the little brother runs into trouble, and they all have a big adventure getting him out of it.  I’m afraid I’m not much of one for short fiction, though.  Don’t care to read it, not good at writing it.  To each his own, as the old lady said when she kissed the cow.

I guess that makes this not much of a blog post.  On the other hand, this is Lame Post Friday of a holiday weekend.  I’m going to call it good enough and see what kind of trouble I can get into.  I hope you all had a lovely Thanksgiving.

I Need a Little Monster

Sometimes I just need monsters.  Yes, it is Lame Post Friday, and I am about to post lame.  Traditionally I use Lame Post Friday for random observations and half-baked philosophy, but today I just want to share pictures of monsters.  Perhaps I could randomly observe or half-bakedly philosophize about them.

Ah, Nosferatu, my favorite guy.

Under the heading Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, I thought I would use stuff from my Media Library (I feel so sophisticated, having a Media Library).  I wanted to use this shot because, in addition to being my beloved Nosferatu, the building in the background reminds me of the one that houses Little Falls Antiques Center, as seen from the area where LiFT Theatre Company rehearses for our summer Shakespeare plays.  Wouldn’t that be awesome, if Nosferatu could join our little community theatre group?  Daytime performances might be a problem, but perhaps we could overcome the difficulty somehow.

“To be or not to — oh wait, wrong play!”

Here is an early rehearsal for The Tempest, last summer’s offering (note the presence of scripts).  You can see the building in the background.  Now don’t go saying stuff like, “Those buildings don’t look anything alike!”  You know I hate it when people are so didactic!

I don’t imagine I’ll be doing much howling myself tonight.

I close with a picture that mentions Friday, as I am currently celebrating Lame Post Friday.  I hope you enjoyed today’s lame post.  Have a lovely beginning of your weekend.

No, It Really IS Friday!

I’m having a Bela moment.

I was going to call this post “Not Feeling Friday,” but a quick search showed me I have already used that title.  Still, feeling it or not, it is Friday, the day I allow myself to post lame (I have different excuses the other days, you know that, so just hold your sarcastic comments till the end).  However, lame or not, a post must be made.  I thought to do the picture thing I have come to enjoy and perhaps overuse.  Looking through my Media Library, I saw this gem, a longtime favorite of mine.  Of course I usually post it on a Tuesday, but it just feels right today.

This was one of my favorite Facebook profile pictures.

I put in this picture in case anybody is judging me for my day-of-the-week time warp.  Go ahead and judge!  I’m not perfect!  I’m not even pretty damn good most days!

Hey, wasn’t I running away from this guy in yesterday’s post?

Oh, here, for anybody who might be sitting there saying, “But dammit, it really IS Friday!”  I can appreciate being a stickler for accuracy.

This is a really fun movie. I wonder if Steven would be into watching it tonight.

I add this picture purely for the irony:  obviously my brain has died, leaving my body behind, fingers typing foolishly.  OK, I have to admit: that just amused me quite a bit.  Well, I’m afraid I write this blog for me.  I hope to also entertain any readers who happen to chance by, but if I please myself, at least SOMEBODY will be happy.  I think even silly bloggers deserve some happiness.

Speaking of silly, I will end with a silly picture of me, in a dramatic moment in The Tempest, the play I was in the LiFT Theatre Company this past summer.  I kind of went over the top in this scene, but the director never told me I went too far, so I guess it was all right.  Now that I think about it, it is a little further irony to put this picture under the heading “Speaking of Silly,” because at that moment in the play (in fact, almost any moment I am on stage), I did not even think about feeling silly: I just went for it.

I’m the one in the yellow tights, in case you couldn’t guess.

Happy Friday, everybody.

I Love a Large Lizard

Two of my favorite things: birthdays and monsters!

I was checking Facebook prior to making this week’s Friday Lame Post, and what did I see but Happy Birthday, Godzilla!  For all my love of movie monsters, I have not written about that many Godzilla movies.  There was one, and I’m afraid I was not in love with that movie.  Still, a monster, a birthday, Lame Post Friday, I’m going with it.

Full disclosure:  I did not research whether or not this is actually but big guy’s birthday.  I just downloaded the meme and ran with it.  I quickly searched for more pictures and came up with a few.

Stars: they’re just like us! They take the subway!

I gotta love a monster that utilizes public transportation.  It’s so much more down to earth than, say taking a limo.  I personally never take a limo.  At least, I suppose I might take a limo for a very special occasion, for example, me being able to afford a limo.  I imagine it is the same for Godzilla.  It is pretty much expected for stars to take a limo to movie premieres and such.

Like John Barrymore: “the famous profeel.”

Here is a more glamorous shot.  I’m sure stars like their fans to see them at their best.  As do many of us.

“Thanks for the birthday wishes, everybody!”

I shall close with a nice smiling shot.  I quickly went to another tab and typed “godzilla’s birthday” into the space where you put in the url.  I discovered that on Nov. 3, 1954, Gojira was first screened in Japan, making this, indeed, Godzilla’s birthday.  Happy Birthday, big guy!
