Raising My Spirits

Saturday after I left Fall Fest in Rome, NY I realized I could still stop by the Saturday Tasting at Valley Wine and Liquor in Herkimer.  I thought it might be a fun end to my Saturday adventuring, and I often discover something new to sip.  Of course I had one of my Adventure Books with me to take tasting notes.

I confided in Dave, who did the pouring, that I was feeling a little emotional after seeing my parents taking their nice walk at Bellamy Harbor Park and being so grateful that they get to grow old together and still love each other so much.  Naturally I can’t help feeling sad that I do not get to grow old with my Steve.  I comfort myself with the phrase, “I just don’t get to, that’s all.”  But Dave’s friendliness soon cheered me up, and I enjoyed sampling his wares.

Friendly guy, different spirits, what’s not to like?

We started with Goodnoff Vodka, which he put over ice and added orange soda.  I said it was tasty, but I am not much of a vodka aficionado.  Next I tried the Good Fucking Pinot Pinot Grigio.  That was very nice indeed.  I AM a Pinot Grigio fan.

Next I tried the Milamore from Argentina, a red.  They let the Malbec grape wither on the vine then ferment it.  This is the only winery doing the style outside of Italy.  I love these notes about the making of the wines, although I daresay I miss a few things when I take my notes.

Next I moved to Holster Bourbon, a 90 proof Kentucky bourbon.  I told Dave I have only lately come to the bourbon party, previously not liking it much but continuing to try different kinds, just in case.  Well, I thought this stuff was amazing.  So smooth!  It was a very nice price too.  Next was Tennessee Legend Distillery Small Batch Dirty Cream.  It, too, was very nice.  It didn’t even taste like booze, really.  I thought it would be great in coffee.

The last thing I tried was Good Fucking Bubbles Extra Dry Prosecco.  I told Dave how I was searching for a new bubbly to love, since my old favorite, Great Western Brut or Extra Dry was no longer being made.  He actually had not opened the Prosecco but opened it just for me, after I told him my bubbly story.  He was justified, too, because I liked it a lot.  I purchased a bottle.  Will it be my new favorite?  I’ll let you know.

Another Friday Night Lame

I thought I would make my Lame Post Friday post on Friday.  How hard can it be?  It’s a Lame Post!  And I’m a Lame Brain!  I can’t even think of anything to say.  Quick, throw in a picture and talk about that!

That’s Lam not Lame, me!

My sister Cheryl and I drove by Montezuma Winery in Old Forge, NY on our way to Tupper Lake to see the Trolls on Wednesday, but, alas, did not stop.  If I am dying to go wine tasting, there is a tasting at Valley Wine and Liquor in Herkimer till six.  My Chromebook tells me it is about quarter to four right now.  I could make it.

I don’t think these trees are there any more.

I throw in a splash of fall color for good measure.  I have been enjoying some of the colors around here but have not seen any trees fully engulfed so far.  I suppose if I walked to the liquor store for the tasting I might see some color.

I am a shadow of my former self.

In fact I am sitting on my couch wondering what I should do with my evening.  My Elks Lodge is having OctoberFest, but do I really want to get dressed up and go out to eat?  The longer I sit and ponder, the less I feel like it.  How lame is that?  Don’t I always go out on Friday night?

Well, I will figure this one out on my own.  In the meantime, I am over 200 words of a silly blog post.  Happy Friday, everyone!

No Monsters, But Monday Mosey

My well-wishers will be pleased to know I started walking again.  Today I took my cellphone with me so I could do a Pedestrian Post with Pictures in lieu of my usual Monstrous Monday (no promises about Tuesday).  I had neglected to charge my Garmin so paused for a cup of tea before I headed out.  I was still well ahead of the heat of the day.  I strolled down German Street, feeling pleased that I could.  I must say it is so wild to me to feel perfectly capable of walking down the street when two months ago I couldn’t make it to the bathroom without lying down halfway and taking a break (for those of you who thought I was done whining about my aches and pains, I do not know why you got your hopes up).

Trees are so cool!

I had noticed the branches of this tree on a previous walk and thought it would make a good picture.  I’m nobody’s photographer, but for purposes of this blog, I will have to do.

Alas, that you probably cannot read the sign.

Just to give a plug to a local business, Raindrops on Roses Bed and Breakfast.  They also have a wine tasting room with a garden (perhaps you read my blog posts about it).  They sometimes have music in the summer.  I know this, because they recently had to cancel one due to weather.  I must watch for another.  For one reason, it would make a good blog post.  For another, wine.

I do like to see running water.

I paused to take a picture while going over the bridge which was recently replaced there.  Very nice.  It wasn’t such an inconvenience going around while they were working on it, but it is always nice when these projects are finished.

Still known as HCCC or H-trip-C to locals.

I also took a picture of the college sign.  I took other pictures as I continued to walk, but I see I am over 300 words now.  I thought as I was going that more than three would be too many but also thought I could always use them in a Waste Not Want Not Wednesday post.  It is nice to have plans for the rest of the week.

Almost a Perfect Tasting

Emboldened by my success with breakfast out yesterday, I went to a wine tasting at Valley Wine and Liquor in Herkimer, NY.  I do love wine.  I checked:  a little bit of wine is not incompatible with the medications I am on (I risk a HIPAA violation to soothe any fears my well-wishers may harbor).  Wines from two wineries were offered.

She was very knowledgeable.

First I tasted wines from Mazza Chautauqua Cellars, a New York State winery using grapes from Long Island.  I did not even know they grew grapes on Long Island.  Anita, the lady pouring, told many things about the wines, but I was not very quick at taking notes.  I enjoyed the Perfect Rose.  The Perfect Bubbly was sweeter than I like, but I am sure it would be perfect for many.

Revelation wines from Columbia Valley in Washington State were next.  This is a third generation winery, making sustainable vegan wines.  I tasted a lot of grapefruit in the Sauvignon Blanc.  The Riesling was sweeter than I like, but then I like really dry wines.

I decided to purchase a bottle of the Perfect Rose.  Anita nicely carried it to the register for me, and a young man carried it to my car.  Two crutches make things awkward, but one does what one can.

Valley Wine and Liquor is located at 326 S. Caroline St., Herkimer, NY.  They have tastings almost every weekend.

It Isn’t Really So Early, Is It?

I am making a Wrist to Forehead Sunday post at eight o’clock on a Sunday morning.  Too early to swoon, you say?  Nonsense!  The early bird get the worm, or the chaise lounge, as the case may be.  I once said, “The early bird gets the worm, but the late bird gets spaghetti,” with a waggish intonation.  I forgot I said it and when reminded, I said, “I said that?  I’m witty,” arguably a more quotable line, unless you are inordinately fond of spaghetti, which I am.

When I first started typing the preceding paragraph, a little bubble appeared on my Chromebook reading, “help me write.”  I was highly offended. Help me write?  I need no help to write!  I am an excellent writer! And I do not care if I flatter myself.

Mmmm… wine…

I threw in a picture, to distract from the fact that I was flattering myself.  This is Montezuma Winery’s tasting room in Old Forge, NY, which I visited with my sister Cheryl last fall.  I was mentioning their tasting room in Cooperstown just yesterday.  I like to visit tasting rooms.

My situation this morning, by the way, is that I must take my shower and pack, because I am going to Rome to spend Mother’s Day with my lovely mother and equally wonderful father.  I intend to spend the night.  I do not know why I become so flustered over what should in fact be a fairly routine matter, but so it is.  However, I have managed a blog post of over 200 words, so my daily blogging habit continues.  Once again, I thank you all for tuning in.

Where Have I Been? Where May I Go?

With apologies for missing my Wednesday blog post, I attempt another Throwback Thursday.  I have done a few things this morning, not many of course:  took a mile and a half walk, met friends for breakfast, talked to my parents, met with a contractor (long story, not very interesting)… OK, I have not done much.  I have a hair and toenail appointment this afternoon and a murder mystery rehearsal this evening (preview of coming attractions).  I certainly hope I remember to take a couple of pictures at rehearsal for a Post-Rehearsal Post.

Now what did I do with that little silver purse?

This is a picture of my bestie Kim and me at a Prohibition Party at Gerber’s 1933 Tavern in Utica, NY.  I actually have some better 1920s outfits now, and I am always hoping to add more. Note to self:  make the next murder mystery a 1920s theme.  I thought I would throw back to businesses previously visited, but of course I cannot get away from my theatrical (not to say drama queen) nature.

Cheers to a Cute Little Blonde!

Here is a local business I need to return to soon, Heelpath Brewing in Frankfort.  The Cute Little Blonde mentioned in the caption refers to the wine Kim is drinking, from Rustic Ridge Winery in Burlington Flats.  That would be more of a drive for me to visit, but it is a delightful place.

The bunnies were still there last week!

Now here is a place I have been recently and intend to return to today: Valley Wine and Liquor in Herkimer, NY.  I go for their weekly tastings, for a naughty sip and some pleasant conversation.  I must see what they are tasting today.

I have cheered myself up, thinking of these places I have been to and can go to again.  I miss my Kim, who has moved halfway across the country, but perhaps she will return for a visit sometime.  In the meantime, there is no reason I cannot enjoy some Mohawk Valley Adventures with other friends or even on my own.

Late Slacker Saturday, but Shout-Out for the Cats!

This will be a late Slacker Saturday post and no promises about a Sunday blog post.  I am on my second cup of coffee, which should help matters, but as the late great Fats Waller said, One never knows, do one?

Drink coffee, write. Only two of my goals for today.

I thought I would throw in a coffee cup as an illustration.  I purchased this one at Athenix Books and Brews, just to throw in another shout-out to one of my favorite local businesses.  I got the ghostie pen holder there too (should it be “ghosty” or “ghostie”?  My computer thinks both are wrong.  I suppose I could say “ghostly,” but I think my little guy is too cute for that) (But I digress).

Yesterday I did a few things and reminded myself to make a blog post, even if it was a Slacker Saturday post.  Alas, I did not get to it.  I wrote my weekly post cards and walked them to the post office (that makes it sound like they walked along with me, perhaps on little post card leashes) (why did auto-correct capitalize “Little”?).  A little later (left it lowercase that time) I went to a wine tasting at Valley Wine and Liquor (another shout-out!), then brought an afghan to Mohawk American Legion, where I donated it to the HALO Lucky Paws Auction for Sunday (today!).

HALO (and here we come to the real shout-out of the post) is the Helping Animals Live Organization.  This is the 17th Lucky Paws Auction.  I have attended many in years past and won great stuff.  They get tons of great donations: baskets for any interest, gift cards from area businesses, and an afghan from me!  It takes place today, Sunday March 8 at the Mohawk American Legion, 45 West Main St., Mohawk, NY, with viewing beginning at 11 a.m. and drawings beginning at 2 p.m.  If any local readers read this in time, I encourage you to attend!

It Was a Sauvignon Kind of Day

I have not done a wine tasting post in a while.  In fact, I go to fewer wine tastings these days, but Valley Wine and Liquor in Herkimer has them almost every weekend.  In fact, many area liquor stores do, but Valley is the closest one for me.  When I still worked it was oh so handy to stop by on my way home on a Friday.  When I would go adventuring with my friend Kim on Saturdays, we often stopped in to taste, if something was going on.  I have a lot less wine in my house since I stopped being so faithful!

This weekend, Valley Wine and Liquor has tastings Thursday through Sunday.  I speculate that they are helping people get stocked up for Super Bowl parties.  I have not been invited to a Super Bowl party, but one never knows when a last minute invite may come along.  I needed exercise, so I walked down to the store Thursday afternoon.  I questioned my ability to carry multiple bottles of wine home but hoped for the best.  Sasha, one of the regular pourers, was sampling Bonterra Organic Wines from California.

We love wine!

We started out with Cabernet Sauvignon, which I declared very tasty.  Regular readers know I do not have a sophisticated palate and rarely taste notes of anything, but I liked this.  I liked the Red Blend, too, but not as much.  Alas, I neglected to ask what it was a blend of so cannot tell you.

For whites, I was quite taken with the Sauvignon Blanc.  I told Sasha I found I liked California Sauvignon Blancs best.  She said she liked all California wines.  Indeed, there are great wines coming from CA.  I liked the Chardonnay a lot, finding it not the least bit buttery.  I know some people like buttery chardonnays but I prefer the crispy, unoaked ones.

I purchased the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Sauvignon Blanc.  I confess I did not enjoy my walk home.  Two bottles of wine are heavy for an old, un-muscular broad like me!  It reminded me of a blog post I made years ago, when I walked home from the much missed Ramar’s Liquors with my even more missed dog Tabby and a box of wine.  I could have made a whole post about yesterday’s walk home but prefer to give a shout-out to a local business instead.

Valley Wine and Liquor is located at 326 S. Caroline St., Herkimer, NY.  You can check their website at shopvalleywine.com for the tastings schedule.

A Few Pics, A Brief Post

So I am not doing so good at the daily blogging stuff.  I will at least try to make a Waste Not Want Not Wednesday post, using a few photos from my cell phone.  This may also serve as a Preview of Coming Attractions, if only I follow through!

Nice local business.

I went to a wine tasting at Ann Street Liquors in Little Falls, NY.  They do not have tastings as often as Valley Wine and Liquor in Herkimer, but I try to attend when they have one.

Great family grouping!

Here are a couple cousins, a sister and a nephew at an art event I recently attended in Liverpool, NY.  Why I did not write a blog post right away about the happening, I do not know.  At least, maybe I could think of a reason, but it would be so unflattering to me, I hesitate to do so.

A very cool place.

This is a picture from Cobblestone Castle, a place I visited with my sister Cheryl recently.  Once again, I blame myself for not blogging about it sooner.

I may as well as admit, my depression and grief keep me from doing the things I like to do.  However, sometimes I manage to post something.  As always, I thank you for tuning in.

Oh Yeah, We Tasted Wine

I just realized I neglected to make a blog post about my sister Cheryl’s and my stop at Montezuma Winery in Old Forge two weeks ago.  Me, neglect wine? Say it ain’t so!

Wine? Yes, please!

We have been to the original Montezuma Winery in the Finger Lakes, and I visited their tasting room in Cooperstown with my friend Kim.  I did not realize they were in Old Forge till Cheryl suggested we stop there.

I started with the Duck Duck Lam Goose Co.  It was just too cute a name to resist!  It is a red sparkling wine.  I do love a few bubbles!  I felt it smelled New Yorky, which to me is a great compliment.  Then I foolishly asked what grape it was.  Hello!  Lam Goose Co/Lambrusco?  Silly me!  (I even wrote “silly me” in my tasting notes).

I love a wine with a goose on the label!

I took tasting notes on the other wines I tried, but none of them are very descriptive.  Regular readers know that I rarely taste “notes” of anything, nor can I describe the “finish,” but I do like to come up with something a little more interesting than “good”  and “I like this one.”  My favorite was the V0luer 2023 Pinot Noir.  Cheryl tasted all different ones from me, because she likes sweet wines better. Of course we made the usual jokes about how she is sweet and I am not.

We finished up with Judd’s Grape Pie, a grape liqueur.  It was indeed grapey and very sweet.

I do love tasting wine.  I wonder if I can get anybody to go with me to the Finger Lakes any time soon.
