I went running this morning, thinking I could do a Sunday Running Commentary Post. Fortunately that was not the only reason, because I don’t know that I can say that much about it now. However, I have been having a fairly enjoyable Cinema Sunday, so perhaps I can post about that.
Basil has a clue.
We started with Dressed to Kill, starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson respectively. This was how I first encountered Basil Rathbone, not as the horror icon I later found out he was.
“Oh, one more thing!”
We went on to a couple of episodes of Columbo, which we happen to have on DVD. I would like to eventually have the entire series. I loves me some Columbo.
It was scary!
Next I wanted something cheesy, so we went to our collection Attack of the Killer B’s for Track of the Moonbeast. I remembered it from MST3K, if that tells you anything.
Great ensemble piece.
Now we are enjoying The Big Chill, an old favorite with a great soundtrack.
Now I am trying to think of a title to pull this post together. Well, what does anybody want from me on a Sunday afternoon? At least I am up to 200 words and a few illustrations. Time to start looking forward to Monstrous Monday! As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.
All I have for my Saturday Evening Blog Post (You, know, like Saturday Evening Post, only I stuck in Blog) is a few pictures of a great big icicle hanging off my roof.
Can you see how big it is?
Steven noticed it earlier this week and warned me not to park my car directly underneath it. Naturally I wanted to take a picture but did not get a chance till much later.
Can you tell?
I had gone out to meet my friend Kim and when I got home I paused for a few shots. I got one where you can see it is at least as long as a window.
I stood in the road to get that one.
iI suppose it does not make much of a blog post, but at least I find it more amusing than yet another post about Not Making a Blog Post Today. I hope at least for tomorrow I can make at least some semblance of a Post. As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.
Regular readers know that however many foolish posts I may have during the week, I almost always have Lame Post Friday. This week, it is kind of a necessity, because I ain’t got much. All week pretty much all I have done is go to work and come home. Not much to blog about.
On the one hand, it is good to be gainfully employed. Furlough is not much fun. Being laid off is less so. I know I am blessed to have found a job as quickly as I did. So anybody gearing up for a round of Just-Be-Grateful-That can stand down.
That is one of my pet peeves, by the way. Sometimes one just wants to bitch. We do not want someone bleating at us, “Just be grateful you have a job” on the days your job sucks. Or “Just be grateful you have a car” when the damn thing breaks down or the defrost doesn’t work. “Just be grateful you have indoor plumbing” when you just spent the morning plunging the toilet. “Just be grateful you’re the murderer not the murderee” when you are trying to dispose of a body.
You see what I mean.
One thing I am always truly grateful for, without being reminded to be, is that people read my blog. Happy Friday, everyone.
Today was (is) National Drink Wine Day. I heard that on the news this morning, as did a number of my co-workers.
“Just to clarify,” I asked, “It is not Gluck Down The Whole Bottle At One Sitting Day, correct?”
A co-worker said she felt there should be no judgement. A kind, insightful woman,
No, I am not glucking down bottles but merely enjoying a glass. I only mention the fact because, well, this is my blog post and I don’t have a whole lot else to talk about. Judge me if you are so inclined.
Regular readers (if I still have any) know I have been having a difficult time lately, writing or doing almost anything else. I go through these patches. For the most part I keep making daily blog posts, because that is what I do. Sometimes they are whiny. Sometimes they are about wine. Some of them I label Non-sequitur Thursday, hit Publish, and drive on.
I thought of my title before composing the post for once. In general I prefer Throwback Thursday to Way Back Wednesday, but I can’t fight the calendar. I am also trying to fight my mid-winter malaise. Good God, is it only MID winter? I was hoping we were in the home stretch. But I digress.
Way Back indeed!
I went to February 2017 and found a really old picture. October 1990. Holy crap, am I getting old! I have been thinking lately about how time flies. My question is: If time is moving so quickly, why isn’t it spring yet?
Abominable!
Here is a shot from 2017. Obviously not as way back, but I wanted to show snow. I actually have not looked at my deck in a while, since I have been using the front door. I just imagine it looks similar.
Do I look like a criminal to you?
I do not remember how old the picture is, but I believe the frame was added in 2015 by my friend, Norm. This was about the time I played Roxalana Druse in Roxy by Jack Sherman, a play sponsored by Herkimer County Historical Society with Ilion Little Theatre. It was an original script about a local, historic murder.
I guess this post jumped around a little, but you’ll have that, especially with this blog. I am just happy I avoided another Wuss-Out Wednesday. Or worse!
Well, this is not working out. I feel marginally less crappy than I did yesterday but yet not up to making a good blog post. Perhaps I could manage a late Monstrous Monday Post. Or would it be an early Mid-Week Monsters Post? Discuss amongst yourselves.
Creep and sinister.
I downloaded this picture some time ago. Is it from Curse of the Vampire or Mark of the Vampire? Something about a vampire. I cannot easily look it up, because the only one in it I know (not personally, of course) is Bela Lugosi. I can’t very well look up, “You know, that movie with Bela Lugosi and that girl vampire?”
Bela alone.
I went to my Media Library to find another vampire. You wouldn’t think it would take me so long to find one. Now I am feeling really tired, which is actually OK. I might be early or late for monsters, but I am right on time for Tired Tuesday.
I had to use it.
I just looked through my entire Media Library, did not find this one, so downloaded it from my Facebook cover photos. Totally worth it. Happy Tuesday, everyone.
I was sitting here feeling relieved, because I just emailed out this month’s submissions to Mohawk Valley Living magazine. Oh, was that an effort! I am plagued by sinus headaches or something (I am no hand at self-diagnosis). All I want to do is go to bed.
There’s a thought!
I saved this a while ago. Actually, I think what I want most is to pour myself into bed. I think I will institute a new feature: Misbegotten Monday. It is for when things are even worse than Wuss-Out Wednesday.
Much earlier today, I took a walk. My intention was to get a few exterior shots of Colonial Bed and Breakfast for an article I hope to submit to Mohawk Valley Living magazine. I continued to walk and take pictures, because I thought, Hey! Pedestrian Post! Additionally, I have not been running, and I need the exercise.
One of several shots.
After snapping away, I continued along German Street to Main. On Main Street, I took a couple of pictures of buildings that always catch my eye.
It was for sale, but I guess not now.
Steven always wanted to buy it and make it into a classic movie house.
I don’t know what is in this one currently.
I continued down Main to my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners. I thought perhaps I already had plenty of pictures of the area, yet I took a few more.
This is me attempting “gallery” instead of “image.”
I turned down Church Street to Prospect and got a shot of the synagogue, Temple Beth Joseph.
From across the street.
Heading down to Park Avenue, I photographed our post office, which I love, and the church across the street.
You can tell which is which.
It was really too cold for a walk, and I was tired of taking my gloves off to take pictures. As I turned towards Meyers Park, I thought I would just go straight home. Then I saw General Herkimer wearing his winter scarf and could not resist taking just one more picture.
A nice winter shot.
I guess you can’t see him really well, but I do love the trees against the grey sky.
I was pleased with myself for taking the walk. I want to get back into running more often, though. I have not gone since last Sunday. Yikes! But it is the start of another week. Another chance to improve! I will be sure to make a blog post about it if I do.
I was wondering whether to address the three days I missed recently, a rather unbecoming performance for one who aims to be a daily blogger. One school of thought goes, least said, soonest mended. This is, of course, a school of thought I rarely follow. When have I ever said the least? I always talk too much!
Additionally, I have several times proved that even when sick, I can usually manage a word or two. They are usually whiny words about how I cannot possibly make a blog post that day, but let us not dwell on such unflattering reflections. However, it seems to prove that I CHOOSE whether or not to post.
Therefore, it seems I cannot excuse my non blogging days by saying, “I couldn’t post, I was sick!” Apparently I could have posted. I CHOSE not to. I say, that is perfectly fine with me. I CHOSE not to post, because I felt ill and chose to take care of myself.
There is a school of thought that says we writers must write no matter what. If we take a day off due to ill health or whatever reason, we are not real writers.
Who makes up these rules? Who arbitrates that we must follow? I do not know. In any case, I am over 200 words. As regular readers know, I call that respectable. That is by my rules for me. I would be interested to hear comments about what others think about my (and other) rules, as well as what rules they follow for themselves.
I began my Valentine’s Day weekend by shopping at a new place for a gift for my husband Steven: Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast in Herkimer, NY.
One does not usually think about a bed and breakfast as a shopping destination, but I saw on Facebook that Grand Colonial was opening their gift shop to the public on Friday and Saturday just for the occasion. I was naturally delighted to check it out, especially as they said they carried locally sourced items. Additionally, I am seeking a topic for an article for Mohawk Valley Living magazine. A local B&B might fit the bill.
The first thing I saw when I walked in the door was the nicest dog! I barely remembered to shut the door before I went over to let him. His name is Brick, and he loves people.
A rare still moment.
Linda Costanza and Michael Martin, two of the owners, could not have been nicer. When I told them I wanted to write about their place, they showed me around and answered all my questions. I took a lot of pictures. If I can’t write the article, I can definitely get another blog post or two out of it.
A lovely display.
I also accomplished my intention of purchasing a present for my husband.
I almost purchased something for myself as well.
They said they could offer testers of the Berkman 1802 products, but such things could not be left just out these days, due to COVID. Sadly, COVID has wrought havoc on their business. Problems continue as, for example, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown goes virtual for their annual inductions. Obviously, these kinds of precautions are necessary during a pandemic, but I feel we are justified in saying, this really sucks (pardon my French).
Just a few more choices.
I think it was pretty smart of the folks at Grand Colonial to use Valentine’s Day to call attention to themselves and bring in a little gift shop business. I asked if the shop was open to the public at other times. Linda said anybody interested could give them a call and they would be glad to open.
“Ooh, private shopping by appointment,” I said. That would actually be a perfect way to shop during COVID times.
For anybody who wants to stop in for Valentine’s Day, the Grand Colonial will be open tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 13, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are located at 112 W. German St., Herkimer, NY, phone number 315-982-5004. You can visit their website at https://grand-colonial.com/. You can also Like them on Facebook.
