I’ve Got That Holiday Feeling

Yes, it’s Lame Post Friday.  As regular readers know, however many foolish posts I make during the week, I always feel free to enjoy Lame Post Friday.  I am sitting on my couch in Halloween pajama bottoms, bra off (don’t you DARE say TMI!), glass of wine beside me.  There is an episode of 20/20 on the television that I would like to crochet and watch, but blog posts must be made (at least mine, by me).  So where shall I start…

You can’t tell, but I really do have pretty good legs for a woman my age.

Since I had mentioned my Halloween pajama pants, I thought I’d grab my Tablet and take a quick picture.  As we all know, the Halloween season begins the day after Labor Day.  However, I like to celebrate the holiday all year long.  To that end, we leave a few favored decorations out.

He was a Christmas present from my dearest husband, Steven.

Steven bought me this lovely vampire at Aubuchon in Herkimer, now sadly closed.  He is holding a Christmas ball in one hand and a bag of skulls in the other (I purchased the skulls for another purpose; he’s holding them for me).  We also put the little stocking around his neck to make him even more appropriate as a Christmas decoration.  I wonder if we ought to add a couple of accessories for Thanksgiving, Easter and the Fourth of July.  Points to ponder.

The frog is her friend, not a former prince.

This is one of our loveliest witches.  We have quite a collection  If we put them all out this year, perhaps I could make a witchy blog post with pictures.  She did not come with the frog; he is part of Steven’s extensive collection of such amphibians.

It looks as if Scrooge grumpily thrust Marley in the back in order to dominate the photo.

Just to show you we are not complete Halloween maniacs, I include a picture of a couple of our year-round Christmas decorations.  This is a Buyer’s Choice Caroler of Jacob Marley, which I purchased for Steven in 1989, after he had played the part of Jacob Marley in a production of A Christmas Carol.  My, that WAS a long time ago!  I cannot remember who gave Steven the nutcracker of Scrooge, but I believe it was my mother.  That is a kaleidoscope in the foreground.  We have a pretty cluttered knick-knack shelf.

Remember Roxy?

So there I was, trying to think of something to make a blog post about that was not whining about how I couldn’t make a blog post today or sharing pictures of monster movies, when I saw that a friend on Facebook had shared a memory from 2015, and I said, “Ah, Roxy.”

I’m being threatened by the guy with the ax, but don’t worry: I turn the tables on him.

This is a rehearsal shot from the play Roxy by Jack Sherman, that was presented by the Herkimer County Historical Society at Ilion Little Theatre in September of 2015.  It concerns a famous local murderess, who was tried in the Herkimer County Courthouse and hanged behind the 1834 Jail. I played the title role.  It was a large cast, and everybody had a chance to shine.  It was quite the theatrical experience for all involved (I believe I wrote a few blog posts about it).  Having downloaded the above photo for inclusion in today’s post, I typed “Roxy Ilion Little Theatre” into the Facebook search box to see what else I could find.

I didn’t really look like this, although I tried.

This is the poster.  The Historical Society also had little magnets of it made up.  I have one on my refrigerator now.

Isn’t he handsome?

This is my wonderful husband, Steven, who played four different roles.  Here he portrays Dr. Suiter, who rather fancied himself as a forensic expert and had a lot to do with getting Roxy hanged.  Thanks a lot, Steve!

That reward isn’t really being offered, so don’t go calling “America’s Most Wanted.”

A friend put this frame on a picture of me.  As far as I remember, no reward was offered for Roxy’s capture, and she wasn’t that hard to take in anyways.  If you want to know the real story of Roxalana Druse, I recommend James M. Greiner’s book, Last Woman Hanged.  I said I was not going to be in any more plays for a while.  Still, if anybody decided to stage a revival of Roxy… well, let’s just say I would take it under consideration.

OK, It Was a Trashy Novel

It is National Read a Book Day, and I have just spent most of the afternoon and early evening reading a book.  Never mind which book; my reading choice will not impress you with my taste and intelligence (both questionable at the best of times).  But, obviously, I have been reading, not writing.  So I do not have a blog post.  Please do not judge me on Wuss-out Wednesday.  I will get back to having Mohawk Valley Adventures and writing about them soon.  But I’m not up to that today.  However, I will try to muster up some cheerfulness and maybe a little silliness.

Am I pandering by sharing a picture with so many scantily clad women?

This is one of the cheesy movies I watched on Monday, while waiting for my husband to come home from work.  I was looking for a cheesy image to share and discovered a Facebook page called Scream Factory.  I wonder what other fun stuff they have.

Here’s a more circumspect image.  Just a bit of a boob shot, partially obscured by her dramatically placed arm.

Full disclosure: I have never seen nor even heard of Hell Night.  I just liked the picture.

So I guess the Scream Factory sells Blu-Ray and DVDs of horror movies.  What a useful site.  Of course, I usually find my stuff in the bargain bins at various big box stores (none of which need a plug form Mohawk Valley Girl).

Nothing whatever lurid about this one!

If I ever update my entertainment system and need to purchase Blu-Rays, now I know where to find one of my favorites!  Right now, however, I have this gem on at least two DVD collections.  I do love a movie that involves a severed head.

I have not quite cheered myself up with these cheesy Blu-Ray covers of cheesy movies.  Now I feel like eating some actual cheese.  But I will try for a better blog post on Non-Sequitur Thursday.

The Million Dollar Question Is…

You know, I am really, really sick of Facebook memes that ask if you would do something for a million dollars: live without the internet, stay in a haunted house, slap your cousin (watch out, Mary Beth!).  You would be amazed at all the stuff you can supposedly get paid a million dollars to do.  OK, now everybody, even though you have already spent your millions (I’m guessing most of you would do more than one of the above-mentioned or other chores), listen to me carefully, I’ll put it in bold caps, in case you need the emphasis:

NOBODY IS GOING TO PAY YOU A MILLION DOLLARS FOR DOING ANY OF THOSE THINGS!!!!!

Yes, I felt it needed all five exclamation points.

I have expounded in this space before about my abhorrence of hypothetical questions.  If only I could remember the titles of any of them, I could make a ping-back (something I have become very adept at doing) (Under the heading It Takes So Little To Please Some People: I get so proud of myself whenever I can do anything on the computer).

I know, I know, these questions are conversation starters, meant to stretch our brains in unaccustomed directions.  I guess it seems kind of silly for an alleged fiction-writer such as myself to rail against asking a questions that have no basis in reality.  After all, what is fiction but finding different answers to questions that begin, “What if…?”

Well, I stand by my grumpiness regarding the million dollar question.  For one thing, on no Facebook post I have seen has it ever, EVER engendered a lively conversation, just a whole bunch of people saying, “Yes,” “F***, yeah,”  etc.  The last time I saw it (today), the million dollar task was to stay in a haunted house.  I commented, “You are more likely to find someone willing to charge you big bucks for you to stay in the purportedly haunted house.”  Everybody ignored me, as, indeed, they ignored other affirmative answers and both silly pictures (a Ghost Busters t-shirt and an actual ghost).  I’m not miffed at being ignored; I’m just pointing out that this was no conversation starter.

Anyways, this is my blog post for today. You will note:  I did not whine about not being able to write a decent blog post.  I contend that I did not whine at all, grumpiness notwithstanding.  I’m going to call it a Bad Attituesday and drive on.

Probably NOT the Last Time I’ll Talk About the Tempest

I can still do a Mental Meanderings Monday even if I did have the day off.  Judge me if you like, I’m doing it.  I have had the most delightful lazy three-day weekend imaginable.  I know, I know, not everybody had a three-day weekend.  I’ve had plenty of jobs where I did not get all the traditional Monday holidays off. I’m not gloating, I’m APPRECIATING!  Sheesh!

Now where was I?  Ah yes, about to share a picture I just saw on my Facebook newsfeed.

Robbie the Robot, what’s not to like?

I’ve seen Forbidden Planet, and I have to say: not the cheesy delight I was hoping for.  The movie took on new meaning for me when I was cast in LiFT Theatre Company’s production of The Tempest (I believe I have mentioned that play once or twice), because I have always heard that Forbidden Planet was based on or an update of that play.  I even heard on one of my monster movie Facebook groups (I forget which one) that William Shakespeare is even listed in the end credits of the movie.

Well, I don’t remember a whole lot about the movie (I may have written a blog post about it, and I may muster the energy to look for it), but I gotta say, I do not see a whole lot of similarities.  And I am not real anxious to re-watch the movie to look for them.  Oh, I don’t rule it out.  I’m just not going to seek it out.

I’ve shared this picture before, but I don’t mind seeing a shirtless young man more than once.

This is our Caliban, for whom Robbie the Robot is the ostensible parallel (don’t you just love the word “ostensible”?).  I can’t say the resemblance is striking, unless I am indulging in irony (although, admittedly, many of us do not get enough irony in our diet)

Look how happy we all are!

I close with a picture of our Tempest cast, immediately following our final performance, at the Herkimer Elks Lodge, this past Friday.   One may observe that this is kind of a thin post.  Then again, it is Monday, albeit a holiday Monday for me.  Well, what do you want from me?  I’ve had a lazy weekend and I’ve got post play let-down!  Please tune in tomorrow, when I will strive NOT to have a Tired Tuesday post.

Monster Movies on Wrist to Forehead Sunday

Guess which one I look more like.

I interrupt my Wrist to Forehead Sunday activities to make my blog post.  I open with a picture from House on Haunted Hill, our first movie selection for the afternoon.  We selected it because our guest, Kim, wanted to see something with Vincent Price.  We love Vincent Price.  Now we are watching The Bat, also with Vincent Price.  Additionally, Agnes Moorehead stars.  We love her, too.

And here’s the happy couple.

Full disclosure:  I am not paying a great deal of attention to the movies we are watching.  We are enjoying some jokes and conversation, as well as snacks and drinks.  What else could you ask for on a Sunday afternoon?  I know: a better blog post.  Well, for that, there’s always tomorrow.  Remember: Mohawk Valley Girl posts every day.

In the meantime, what movie will we watch next?  I am set on watching another Halloween movie.  A traditional favorite like Frankenstein, Dracula or the Wolfman?  Or something more obscure from our collection of 50 Horror Classics?  A low budget, stylistic creepfest like Carnival of Souls?  The list goes on.

I would like to end with another picture (you know how I like to include three).  Not knowing what movie we will watch next, I shall select one from our downloads.

They always go for the blonds, don’t they?

Here is dear Vincent and his obsession, Marie Antoinette, in House of Wax.  We probably will not watch that one today, though, as we have recently viewed it.  Still, another picture of Vincent Price is not a bad thing to end a blog post with. Happy Sunday, everyone.

Slacker Saturday, But Here’s a Scarecrow

I won his hedgehog buddy at a Christmas party for Ilion Little Theatre a few years ago.

Yesterday when I was purchasing some last minute things for our cast party after the final performance of LiFT Theatre Company’s production of The Tempest, I impulse bought a scarecrow.  There he was, in a group of friends or brothers, sitting on a display in the produce department.  It is my first decoration for this year’s harvest season.

So this is a late post on a Saturday, and it is going to be kind of lame.  Perhaps I should have sub-titled it, “And a Little Bit of Tim Curry,” because my husband Steven and I have begun the movie watching portion of the evening, and it has a Tim Curry theme.

I can’t get that smoky eyes look, but I have achieved the red lips.

Here is Tim Curry and a couple of friends from Rocky Horror Picture Show, a DVD Steven recently acquired.  I have never seen this movie in the theatre and only recall watching it once on video back in the early 1990’s.  I suppose it is quite the event movie.  I remember it being shown at midnight at the Roxy Theatre in Potsdam, NY, back in the day (you know, the “good old days” when we weren’t good, we weren’t old, and they weren’t days, they were nights).

We watched that one and Steven just put in Clue, another one I never saw in the theatre, but have enjoyed on video and now own on DVD.

It is quite the star-studded cast.

As you may have guessed, I did not do a whole hell of a lot to blog about today.  I don’t care.  I’ve shared a couple of picture and I am going to get back to enjoying my evening.  Happy Saturday, everyone.

No, I’m Not Going to Act and Type!

I tried that before.  Shit happens, as we all know, then I don’t type at all. And as Truman Capote once said, “That’s not writing, that’s typing.”

Where was I?  Ah yes, about to make an especially Lame Friday Post before I go back to either frantically chopping vegetables or thrusting my hot-flashing body into pantyhose (sorry if that gives you an unfortunate mental image)  (not real sorry) (OK, not sorry at all, ha ha on you!).  I’m thinking, this is actually a Flustered Friday post.  You’ll have that when you’re in a play.

And here they are: my acting friends!

Yes, I’ve shared this picture before.  It is one of my favorites.   I actually think it is kind of good I am so flustered, or I might begin to become melancholy.  This will be my last performance with a cast I have grown very fond of.  As I observed before in this space: not a stinker amongst them, and none of them seems to mind that I am kind of a stinker myself (not literally, mind you, it’s an EXPRESSION, don’t be so didactic!) (you know who you are).

As regular readers may remember, tonight LiFT Theatre Company will perform The Tempest at a dinner theatre at Herkimer Elks Lodge.  Who knew the Elks were so cultured?  They were a great audience last year for Much Ado About Nothing, so we have all been looking forward to this performance.  For another reason, it is indoors.  No worries about rain and it is just a little bit easier to make ourselves heard.

I have been saying my lines all day at work, sometimes to suitably impressed co-workers.  There is nothing to do now but get into costume and remember to breathe (which is not as easy as it may sound) (either one).  And hit Publish, because, lame as this may be, it is my Friday post. Have a wonderful evening, everyone.

Horror to Hummus

I pause in the midst of my Non-Sequitur Thursday gyrations to make a blog post. I don’t have all my stuff done.  I am not going to get all my stuff done tonight.  It is unknown how much stuff I will get done tomorrow.  No matter.  My blog post will get done.

I did not end my prom night, or indeed any night so far, looking like this.

I paused in my posting to peek at Facebook and saw this picture. It is, of course, Sissy Spacek in the title role of Carrie.  I identified with Carrie’s stunned, overwhelmed, almost zombie-ish look.  I went to the Facebook page it came from, Classic Horror Movies, where I saw this gem:

He does not look particularly happy either.

This is Christopher Lee in Horror of Dracula.  I identified with his look, too, and not just the surprise and horror.  Look how bloodshot his eyes are.  I get that problem during allergy season too.  Who knew Dracula suffered from rhinitis?

I had been going to tell the tale of all the running around and stuff I have been doing.  Now I feel more into sharing pictures of horror movies.  But I don’t really have time to (a) compose a decent blog post or (b) look for more cool pictures.  I have to get back into the kitchen and do the dishes.  I’ve been mixing and making refreshments for a cast party tomorrow.  Just to throw in another mention of The Tempest.  You know, that play I’m in?

That reminds me: I also have to look over my lines again.  Happy Thursday, everyone.

Is It Halloween Yet?

I just can’t get around it:  I have had a rash of really foolish posts, and I am about to make another.  I stared at a blank sheet of paper for a while on break at work today.  I just could not write down a word, not even a whiny word about how I could not write down a word.  In fact, right now I am by main force preventing myself from backspacing out the foolishness I have typed in thus far.  I have rehearsal for The Tempest at six.  I have to post and go.

I already wrote about The Tempest at the Herkimer Elks Lodge this Friday (perhaps you read my blog post about it).  I just yesterday posted pictures from monster movies.  I can’t do that again, can I?  Or can I?  Regular readers know, I like to make Halloween last all year.  In fact, it is almost time to begin celebrating Halloween anyways.  We can begin the day after Labor Day, right?

Isn’t she sweet?

Not from a monster movie, but a Halloween picture of my own.  We got this lovely lady at Pumpkin Junction in Sauquoit last fall.  We LOVE Pumpkin Junction (I wrote an article about them for Mohawk Valley Living magazine).

Decorations by Steve.

Here is the front view of our house last October.  I wonder what Steven will come up with for this year.

And here is the decorator himself.

This is a shot of Steve at Pumpkin Junction.

So I guess this is my Wuss-out Wednesday post.  A few pictures from last year and a wish for Halloween.  Now it’s off to rehearsal for me.  Happy Wednesday, everyone!
