What Weight Loss Goals?

I think it is time I admit to myself that I do not have weight loss goals, I have weight-loss daydreams.  Today at work, someone was selling candy bars for a kid’s sports team.  Obviously it is a good thing to support youth sports, and I am not one to just make a donation when a $2 donation will get me a candy bar.  Of course I took the candy bar!  Did I save it, or at least half of it for my skinny husband?  NO!

I thought, this is OK, because I am going running after work.  Shortly after I thought that, my legs informed me that I was not.  “We are going home and sitting on the couch like sensible people,” my body told me.  I did not have the oomph to argue.  It is Monday, after all.

If this wasn’t bad enough, Steven did not feel like the leftover pasta sauce I had suggested for dinner.  Oh, that is not the bad part.  The bad part is when he made a sensible alternative suggestion, I said, “Wouldn’t you like to send out for wings and antipasto?”  As a matter of fact, sending out for antipasto is not such a bad idea.  For one reason, it means I will have leftover salad for my lunch tomorrow.  For the chicken wings, I make no apology, but merely offer, in my defense, YUM!

Steven called Salvatore’s in Herkimer.  We got wings Siciliano, which are kind of a combination of medium sauce, garlic butter, and bleu cheese.  I repeat, yum.

On the brighter side, instead of a Monstrous Monday, I am giving a shout-out to a local business.  Salvatore’s is located at 650 1/2 W. German St., Herkimer, NY, phone number 315-866-2600.  For more intormation, you can visit their website at http://www.salvatores-herkimer.com.

And I can always go running tomorrow.

I Can Run, But I Can’t Blog

So I went running this afternoon, specifically so I could make a Running Commentary post.  Well, I guess that was not the only reason.  I also want to get back into shape (that is, a shape other than round and puffy), lose weight, be able to run a 5K and better.  And I thought some exercise would help my mood.  I sure could use some of them there endorphins.

Obviously I did not get any.  I suppose I did not run long enough.  You’ll have that, especially when you are trying to get back into it.  I have to remember that in middle age, one falls out of shape a whole lot quicker than when one was younger.  Also, it is harder and takes longer to get back into shape.  I hope I do not appear to be whining about these things; I merely mean to make the observations.

Not actual footage of me after my run, but close.

I thought I’d better pep things up with a picture.  This lady’s face looks like how I feel.  It is Candace Hilligoss in Carnival of Souls (1964).  I got the pic from the Facebook page of that movie.

This is where I must admit, I am too tired and brain dead to make a decent blog post.  Was it the run that tired me out?  Or just the usual Monday Malaise?  No matter.  I’ll throw in a couple more pictures and hope to think of amusing captions.

I could be the old-fashioned slow-poke kind of zombie.

Actually, I walked my cool-down alone.

As I feel like a zombie, I find two zombie pictures.  Now I am done running and blogging for the night.  Happy Monday, everybody.

Wrist to Sweaty Forehead

Kitty was always my favorite character on “That 70’s Show.”

I did mention yesterday that today would be Wrist to Forehead Sunday, didn’t I?  Well it is, and I don’t have much else to write a blog post about anyways.  For one reason, I’m too hot to think. I am sitting on my couch letting the sweat run down my face, because I let Steven take one of the fans out to the kitchen.  He is doing the dishes and making my lunch for tomorrow, so I think I have the better end of the deal.

There.  I just moved to the floor and rearranged  the other fan so I am getting a little breeze on my back.  I have been suffering a lot from face sweat lately.  Sweat all over, of course, but on my face is where it really seems to get to me.   I keep flashing on certain Facebook memes I saw all winter saying things like, “It’s so cold my face hurts!”  I didn’t care for face-hurting cold, either, but I sure could use a happy medium.

So, yeah, I guess this is going to be a blog post where all I do is whine.  You’ll have that, especially with me involved.  I just have this sneaking feeling that my upcoming week is going to be terrible.  Some will say there is only one person who can change that and her blogging initials are MVG.  I must admit, however grudgingly, that they have a point.  I will also say, in my defense, that I am not the only person on the planet.  I could have the best attitude in the world (which I obviously do not), and somebody could do something to make my life miserable. Please, let’s not argue that they will only make my life miserable if I LET them.  For one reason, if you try to dispute with me in this heat, I will begin to suspect that you are one of those people who are trying to make my life miserable.

Here’s a funny thing:  the act of typing in this silliness has cheered me up.  Monday?  Bring it.  Want to make my life miserable?  I’ll write a blog post about it.

I naturally flashed on this little bit of inspiration.

My Sad Deadline Story

Regular readers know that I write for Mohawk Valley Living magazine, a really excellent publication.  Regular readers also know that sometimes I have a real problem writing anything at all.  My magazine articles pose a greater problem, because I can’t just type stuff off the top of my head.  I write about places people can go, things they can enjoy in the Mohawk Valley.  Kind of like I’m supposed to do here, only, you know, here I get away with going off topic.

So my deadline for February’s issue is tomorrow.  This should not have been a problem.  Ideally I would have done some stuff during December that I could write about.  It turns out, December wasn’t so good for me.  So I was determined to do stuff the first weekend in January.  When that turned out to be a cold, nasty weekend, I put things off till this past weekend.  Bad idea.  It was even worse.  That left me with today!

I pored through the ads of Mohawk Valley Living.  This place!  Open Wednesday through Sunday.  Here’s one!  Open Tuesday through Saturday.  Oh, hell, I’ll do a library.  Libraries are always good. BUT, it’s Martin Luther King Day.  Would they be open? When I got home I got on www.midyork.org, looked up a couple of phone numbers and made a couple of calls.  No answer.  Forget the library.

I looked on Facebook, the Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce website, did a couple of Google searches (not that I ever have good luck with that).  I found a bar and grill that looked interesting, and my husband Steven graciously agreed to accompany me.  It was closed.  We drove around past places that were either closed or that I already wrote about.

Now I have a headache again.  I find this not surprising.  But I do not despair.  I still have one more day.  IT!  COULD! WORK!

I’ll keep you posted.

The Grinch Stole My Weekend!

Monster, you are not alone.

I thought I would do a Middle-aged Musings Monday with Monsters. I like monsters.  And I think many can identify with the sentiment expressed by Frankenstein’s Monster (I capitalize it, because I feel he is a friend).  I suppose there is no point in harping on the fact that it is Monday and we don’t like Mondays, so I shall merely express the thought and move on.

“Every Who down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot…”

Here is one of my all-time favorite pictures of a couple of my all-time favorite guys:  The Grinch and Boris Karloff.  I thought it was the best thing in the WORLD when I heard, at a fairly young age, that Boris Karloff was the Grinch.  I had never seen Frankenstein, but I knew quite a bit about it.  Now that I am a true fan of the movie, of old-time horror movies in general, and of Boris Karloff, I relish seeing our DVD of that classic cartoon.

I guess I have expressed all these sentiments before.  We just watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas the other day, and came across that photo on Facebook.  I knew I would use it in a blog post.  I’m only sorry it is not a better blog post, but, as I often say, you’ll have that.

The title just now occurred to me, and I rather like it.  Full disclosure:  Nobody stole my weekend.  I had a weekend, I enjoyed it, it passed as time passes, I await the next one.  However, one is not best served by spending five days of the week merely anticipating two.  I will find useful things to do and accomplish during my week.  I will write blog posts about them.  Happy Monday, everyone.

Oh, I just realized, I said “Middle-aged Musings with Monsters.”  I suppose you could count The Grinch, and that makes two.  Still, I’ll feel better if I include one more.

“I still don’t know why they wanted me to be in this blog post.”

I bet you thought I was going to go with Nosferatu.  Maybe we’ll see him on Tuesday.

View from the Bottom of the Hill

Wrist to Forehead Sunday indeed!  I cannot even type in one coherent sentence!  Never mind why; it is not that interesting.  I have not had a particularly an interestestetring

That was when I gave up and stopped typing.  How embarrassing!  On the brighter side, it seems I spelled embarrassing correctly the first time for once.  It is early Monday morning.  It has happened a few times that I miss my daily post so do it the next morning as early as possible.  I actually could have done this one at 2 a.m. when I woke up and could not get back to sleep, but I like to stay in bed and keep trying. I often meet with success, as I eventually did this morning.  Ah, but will I meet with success in making a blog post?

Probably not.  As I was about to type when I became quite disgusted with my clumsy typing, I did not have a particularly interesting weekend.  I enjoyed it; it’s just nothing to write blog about (get it, like “nothing to write home about”?).

I did see a cartoon on Facebook that caught my attention and my thoughts.  It showed a person at the bottom of hill carrying a bicycle on Monday; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday were spent struggling up the hill; Friday was a happy person at the top of the hill starting down; Saturday zipping down; Sunday reaching the bottom and into Monday in an endless cycle.  I thought, “Yes, that is exactly what I feel like, only without the bicycle.  I feel like I’m pulling myself up a vertical incline with only my fingernails for tools.”  Seriously, that is the exact image that has been coming to my mind lately, even before seeing the cartoon.

However, the point of the cartoon was, “Don’t be like this.”  I commented, “How, how, how can one accomplish this?”  So far nobody has replied, although I got a couple of Likes (on Facebook as with the blog, I love to get Likes).  So now I appeal to my blog readers:  How can one accomplish this without changing one’s job, going back to school, or otherwise completely disrupting one’s life?  Any ideas?  Anybody?  Bueller?

Full disclosure:  I am not feeling particularly ill-used by fate this morning.  I actually feel in a pretty good mood right now.  Is it the coffee?  Or the blog?  Maybe I should start waking up with the blog on a Monday.  It may have a positive effect on my life.

Not Really a Monstrous Monday

When in doubt, include a picture of a monster.

I added that picture after I wrote the following two paragraphs.  I kind of ran dry after mentioning the cooler temperatures and zipped over to Facebook seeking inspiration.

I’m afraid this is a Monday Mental Meanderings post, and not very mental at that.  What can I say, it is Monday and I’m tired.  I know, other people are tired.  I’m sure there are people who are more tired than I am; there are certainly people who work harder than I do, that have more on their plate I have, oh yeah, and are thinner, smarter, better writers… where was I going with this?

It has not been a heinous day.  For one reason, the temperatures cooled off.  I love cooler temperatures.

I have rehearsal in less than an hour.  I did study my lines for a while on break at work today.  I feel moderately ready, although there are a few speeches I am still shaky on.  I will have time to look over them again before we do that scene, I hope.

I also wrote while on break.  I started a post on an old monster movie I watched on Sunday.  I do not think it is a cheesy movie, although the science in which the mad scientist indulges is definitely spurious, a staple of many cheesy movies.  I was writing the post in my head as I worked (my job doesn’t take a lot of brain power, luckily) then tried to put the words on paper once break started.  Of course some of the words were different.  You’ll have that.  Then as I wrote them, I thought of other ways to write what I wanted to say.  I’ll work on it some more.  It is fun to write.  I’m glad I started doing it again, however ineffectually.

Now I must brush my teeth and get ready for rehearsal. It will be fun.  There are very nice people in the cast.  Ooh, I still have to write about last Thursday’s preview performance and share some of the pictures I took.  A preview of coming attractions.  Happy Monday, everyone, even you, Frankenstein’s Monster.

Monday Meatball Mix-up

This is not really a cooking post.  It’s not even really a cooking mishap post.  Oh, I’ll just write it an decide what kind of post it is when I’m done.  It’s that sort of a Monday.

I intend to give blood later this week.  I have had problems with this in the past, namely feeling woozy and ill after they took what seemed a very reasonable amount of blood out of me.  I thought maybe if I ate things with iron in them all week, I might do better.  What has iron in it, I asked myself.  Liver, but I hate liver.  Spinach.  I love spinach!  However, Steven does not love to just eat spinach.  He likes it in things.  I thought, Italian wedding soup.  Yum!

I knew I had spinach in the freezer and chicken broth in the cupboard (yes, purists make the chicken broth from scratch; I didn’t have all day for this!).  I did not have the little tiny pastas, but I had some little tubey-looking ones I thought would be fine.  All I needed was the little meatballs.  Accordingly, I stopped at the store (YES, the freezer section for the pre-made kind, not the meat department so I could make the balls from scratch; we’ve been through this already).

The first problem was that I did not have chicken broth, only beef broth.  Oh well, beef meatballs, beef broth, this will be OK, just a different flavor.

The second mishap was when I started to put the meatballs in and realized I had gotten the full-sized ones, not the minis.  Oh dear!  This was going to look silly, and be awkward to eat.  However, the broth was in the pot and hot; it was too late to change my mind and make tomato sauce (I believe I have a jar Paul Newman’s.  There could be no possible objection to using Paul Newman’s instead of scratch).

And how did the meatball soup turn out?  I don’t know yet.  I just paused between the last paragraph and this one to put the pasta on.  It’s ditalini, by the way (I checked the box when I went out there). I feel certain it will be fine.  For one reason, I’m quite hungry.  Happy Monday, everyone.

OK, before I added the categories and tags, the pasta was done and we ate.  It was yummy!  I LOVE soup!

It Is Monday After All

As I sat at the Endzone Pub & Grub in Herkimer, NY, this evening, I said to Steven, “I’m going to write my blog post about THIS today!”  Now that I’m home after a couple of beers and some food, and I don’t know that I can really do the place justice.  After all, it is Monday.  I’m tired!

I had a very busy weekend, including a very successful murder mystery on Saturday, auditions for a play on Sunday, and various celebrations and friendly times in between.  I worked a full day today (no overtime, but at my age, just time is enough!).  After work, I wrote some post cards, which I neglected to do on Saturday.  It is a beautiful day outside, so Steven agreed to walk to the post office with me.

Of course we did not walk straight back home.  Long story short(er), we ended up at the Endzone Pub and Grub.  We had some pub.  We had some grub. It was a lovely time.  I hope to write a nice blog post about it.  But that is just the problem.  I want to write a GOOD blog post about an excellent local business.  Right now I feel tired.  And, truth be known, more inclined to watch television.

So, once again, sue me.  I’ll see what I can come up with tomorrow.  As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.
