What Would Rudolf Do?

Oh dear, I missed another day of blogging (I still think blogging is a silly verb, but then blog is a silly word) (then again, I am a particularly silly person, so everything fits in). I have no excuse. I did pretty much nothing all day. Now I am up early-ish, looking at WKTV News, where Eric Gage is telling me to drive carefully. I am going to meet friends at Java Shop for breakfast in a bit, but I intend to walk. It will be good exercise and marginally safer than driving.

I have not been running since Monday, which does not bode well for the Reindeer Run 5K in Little Falls this Saturday (the day after tomorrow, yikes!). At my age, I cannot afford to take many days off. I took a good-ish walk on Tuesday (in my defense, it was really cold!). As I walked, I thought I should have run, because the roads were fairly bare. They are not so now, and not likely to be so in the foreseeable future.

I can run in the snow! I’ve done it before!

I don’t know why I feel worried. I’ll show up, I’ll run, I’ll be slow, I’ll make jokes along the way. I’ll write a blog post about it. It’ll be great.

As for today, I’m going to bill this as a Non-Sequitur Thursday, also known as At Least It’s A Blog Post. As always, I thank you for tuning in.

I Can’t Be Tired! I Have Rehearsal!

Oh it is a Tired Tuesday post. It is SUCH a Tired Tuesday post. What, I must ask, the hell is the matter with me? I did not follow my new habit of posting early in the morning. In my defense, I was working on an article about a Herkimer Town Board meeting for the Sentinel Media Company (I think I have mentioned my side hustle covering valley meetings for them). Then I did some other stuff including a run (it was a pretty good run). Now I guess I’m just being a big fat baby brat (that is an old expression of my late husband’s, invented before he even met me).

I have rehearsal tonight for Prescription: Murder, the play I am in at Ilion Little Theatre (perhaps you read some of my other blog posts about it). I have gone over my lines a few times, saying them out loud. I was unable to do that for a while, due to the cold I was suffering from. I need to get that mouth muscle memory going on.

Earlier today I had some breakfast at the Java Shop in Herkimer, just to give a shout-out to a local business.

Looking back at the day, I do not see why I should feel so tired. In fact, I feel a little better now that I have completed my blog post, which I feared I would not do since I missed doing it this morning. I guess it hasn’t been much of a blog post, but there is every chance I can do better tomorrow. In the meantime, I think I have time to go over my lines again.

I Hop to the Java Shop

I went to the Java Shop a few times when it was on Main Street in Herkimer, NY and liked it but had not yet visited their new digs on Mohawk Street. I finally corrected the omission yesterday.

I confess one reason I had not visited yet is that there is only street parking, and I am not good at finding a parking space. Of course this was the case on Main Street too, but I find parking easier on Main Street than Mohawk. I guess that’s just me. Also, the Main Street location was easier walking distance from my house. I can still walk to Mohawk Street, but it is farther and I have to cross Route 5. I know, the trials and tribulations of being me. Some of you are probably playing miniature violins or whistling, “It’s a Hard Knock Life” (you know who you are).

No gumballs in the gumball machine, but I like it.

I ordered an egg sandwich on an English muffin and after some debate decided on regular coffee. I was going to get fancy and try a latte but decided against it at the last minute.

Plenty of seating.

I sat at a table and started a letter to a friend while I waited for my sandwich. There is a section with couches, which would be nice to sit at if I was only having coffee. I wanted to take a picture, but with the sun shining in through the windows, I was afraid it would not come out.

I enjoyed my breakfast very much. The coffee was delicious, but I must return one day to try one of them there lattes.

Good Cup of Java

I was running down Main Street in Herkimer (or possibly up it; I’m not good with directions) when I saw a sign for The Java Shop by Cucino Berto. Well, I am always on the lookout for a new place to sit, sip, and write. I made up my mind to stop in soon.

I had been to the restaurant Cucino Berto when they were located at the Frankfort Marina. According to their website, after two successful years there, Cucino Berto decided to relocate and rebrand. They now offer Friday dinners at the Herkimer Elks Lodge as well as breakfast and lunch daily at The Java Shop.

The first time I stopped into the Java Shop was a Saturday afternoon, and it seemed to be crowded with people who knew the owner. However, the gentleman behind the counter immediately greeted me and took my order. I enjoy a home town shop supported by family and friends. I hope to become, if not a friend, at least a regular customer.

I later learned that the Business and Professional Association of Herkimer had been there earlier to welcome them to the neighborhood. That explained the balloons I saw hovering by the cash register. I think it’s wonderful to see local businesses supporting each other.

The second time I tried to go to the Shop (the following Monday), it was closed for renovations. The renovation was worth the wait: more seating and a more open feel. I got there just after they opened on a Saturday and had a breakfast sandwich. I chose a roll over a bagel (even though they had Everything Bagels, my favorite!), fried egg (with a broken yolk), ham and provolone. Oh, was that a good sandwich! The ham was sliced thin and the egg was cooked to perfection.

I had regular, fresh brewed coffee on each visit. I tend to be a “regular coffee” kind of person, but they have a variety of coffees available. You can even get a coffee flight and try three different kinds. I’ve had beer flights but never a coffee flight. Perhaps I should expand my horizons.

The Java Shop has a friendly, pleasant atmosphere. I enjoyed to sit by myself and write in my notebook, but I will be happy to bring a friend or two as well. After all, my husband Steven loves his coffee. He shouldn’t always have to brew his own!
