Weather or Not I’m Lame

Did you know that Tuesday is the first day of spring?

I particularly like the bare trees.

This is the view from my front porch.  I stepped out with my Tablet to capture a graphic demonstration of why I forgot that it is almost spring.

I’ve seen bigger snowbanks, but still.

Here is a view in the other direction.  My only pleasure is to see the bare sidewalks.  I have not been running lately and want to start again.  Perhaps tomorrow.

I love my tree.

This is not the best shot of this tree, I see now.  I thought as I took it that it might be better to move off the porch, perhaps even across the street.  However, I was in my slippers.  Hey, I bestirred myself to get off the couch.  I only have so much oomph on Lame Post Friday.  Or any other day.

Earlier this afternoon, my friend Kim and I went to a wine tasting at Valley Wine and Liquor.  We were not best pleased with the cold temperature, and even less so when it started snowing.

“Who ordered this?” she demanded.  I denied responsibility.  At least the wine tasting was good.  Perhaps I can write more about it in another post.

For right now, though, it is Lame Post Friday, and the best I can do is share these pictures and gripe about the weather.  You would think I would be in a better mood, if you thought about me at all, which I do not seriously expect.  Actually, that last sentence gave me a chuckle, which improved my mood.  Finishing my blog post improves the mood even further.  I hope to see you all again on Scattered Saturday, even if it does snow.

What’s In a Lame?

Get it?  Like “What’s in a name?”  I came up with the title after I wrote the following:

No, this is not my date for Friday night.

I didn’t have any bright ideas for this week’s Friday Lame Post, but when I was on Facebook, somebody on one of my monster movie pages shared this picture of Max Schreck as Nosferatu.  I immediately downloaded it, and you know my motto (one of them, anyways): waste not, want not.

Incidentally, every time I mention Max Schreck, I have to look up the spelling of his name.  I feel certain I am getting it mixed up with a certain green ogre voiced by Mike Myers (another name I must look up).

“What do you mean, you’ve never seen the movie?”

Shrek.  That is how the ogre spells it.  And it’s Myers not Meyers, Mike not Michael.  I guess Michael Meyers is the bad guy from the Halloween movies.  Full disclosure:  I have never seen any of the Shrek movies, and it comes as no small disappointment to me to find out it is spelled differently from Max Schreck.  I’ve heard the Shrek movies are full of pop culture references.  I think a reference to an iconic silent horror movie would have been nice.  Perhaps they did mean it as a reference but changed the spelling.  If I was a real cinema writer, I would research these things (and once again, we come to the ugly truth about me).

“No, I was not a regular on Saturday Night Live.”

I just looked up Halloween, the movie, and found that Michael Myers spells his name the same way Mike Myers did.  I’m glad we got that cleared up.

A Winter Wonderlame

How about a Blogger’s Snow Day instead of a Blogger’s Sick Day. Winter has returned to the Mohawk Valley, and it has come back with a vengeance!  There was no chance for Mohawk Valley adventures today; all were advised to stay at home if possible.  Additionally, Steven and I have been having computer problems.  Let me tell you, “google it” is not always advice that yields results.  I’m just saying.

Be that as it may, we are now one day into Steven’s Fabulous Four Day Birthday Weekend.  In addition to computer problems, our DVD/VCR player seems to be on the fritz.  Or perhaps it has died, just to be optimistic about these things.  At least we have cable back.  It took a brief vacation when we lost power earlier, also briefly, thank God!  So we were able to watch Blackula earlier.  I had DVR’d it from TCM last October.  I may get a full post out of the viewing.  We shall see in future days.

The sign says “NO SMOKING,” but I think Blackula is smokin’ hot.

Right now, what a surprise, we are watching Snapped.  I do love murder and mayhem.  In the meantime, the snow keeps falling.  I went out and tried to shovel this morning.  I met with some success, but you couldn’t tell as the snow kept falling.  More recently we heard our neighbor out snowblowing the end of our driveway.  What a great guy!  I’ll have to bake cookies and bring some over.

The abominable snow vehicles!

This is a picture from last year’s Snowmageddon.  I did not face such depths this morning, but tomorrow morning I might.  That could be worth a blog post.  As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

To Catch a Blog Post

Non-Sequitur Thursday on a Wednesday, Lame Post Friday on a Thursday, that’s how I roll on a four day week!  All day at work today I kept singing, “It’s my Friday and I’ll cry if I want to!”  a la Leslie Gore.  I have a terrible singing voice, but I do not care at all.  I like to sing.

And so my husband Steven’s fabulous birthday weekend begins.

We do not have great plans for our four-day weekend.  For one reason, dire weather is predicted starting at some point tonight.  Some area schools and non-profits are already closed for tomorrow.  Things were still fairly nice when I got home from work shortly after 3 p.m.  I went for a walk.  Yes, I could make a Pedestrian Post and bag Lame Post Friday, but I feel quite disinclined to do so.

When the blog post seems to be going nowhere, I like to add a picture.

How does their hair stay that nice in a convertible?

Ooh, here is something we probably will not get to do on the Fabulous Birthday Weekend.  Rome Capitol Theatre is showing To Catch a Thief.  The Capitol is a marvelous old style theatre: enormous and ornate.  It was where I saw my first movie years and years ago (never mind how many!).  I feel certain I have written a blog post about it.  We saw Rear Window there a few years ago.  What a thrill!  One of our favorite movies on the big screen in a beautiful setting!  But if the weather is going to be bad, we will probably just hunker down.

However, if any of my readers are in the vicinity of Rome, NY, this weekend, the movie is being shown Friday and Saturday, March 2 and 3, 7 p.m. both nights plus a matinee at 2:30 p.n. on Saturday.  For more information you can visit the Facebook Event.

Blame the Wine, Not the Fish

What could be lamer than making my Friday Lame Post on Saturday morning?  Sorry, folks.  I’m going to blame the full pours of wine at the Ilion Elks Lodge.  Steven and I went there for Fish Fry.  We went into the bar to get a glass of white wine to go with it.  The nice bartender filled those glasses to the brim!  And we had two apiece.  I came home and fell asleep on the couch.  In my defense… no, there is no defense.  I drank wine and fell asleep. I might as well cop to it.

We enjoyed a really delicious fish dinner.  I had broiled haddock with rice and Steven had broiled scallops with french fries. Both dinners came with cole slaw.  I wanted a baked potato, but they were out.  I told Steven that meant we must eat there on a subsequent Friday.   I guess I could just bake my own potato at home, but what fun is that?  For one reason, I can’t broil any fish to go with it.  I’ve never used the broiler in my oven.  I don’t even know if it works (ooh, that could be a future blog post: cooking on the broiler).

I am putting the finishing touches on Secrets at Suiter House, as we begin rehearsals tomorrow.  Perhaps I will write a blog post about it, without giving away any secrets, of course.

Ilion Elks Lodge is located at 8 West St., Ilion NY.  They serve their Fish Fry on Fridays during Lent.  For more information, you can call them at 315-894-1444.

Also Known as a Thelma Todd

There comes a time when I have to say, what the hell, body?  I have a bad blogging and writing week, for various reasons, then when I think I can salvage something on Thursday and Friday, I get completely sick with a terrible head cold.  I am trying to count my blessings — at least I am not nauseous and I did not have to work today — but I feel AWFUL!!!

So I am having a Lame Post Friday after all.  I’m not even going to post any monster movie pictures to liven things up.  Well, maybe one.

Nobody could be un-cheered by Nosferatu.

I spent most of the morning sleeping.  That was sweet.  Some food and a hot shower made me feel a little more human. Then I managed to drive to Utica to get my vehicle.  Oh, never mind why my vehicle was in Utica; it’s a long story and not very interesting.   The drive home was not fun, as the cold symptoms kicked back in, but I made it without being a danger to myself and others.

Back home I had a hot toddy.  I make them the way a doctor told me to many years ago:  hot tea with lemon and honey and a shot.  He recommended brandy or whisky, but I have Mohawk Valley Fire Moonshine from DikinDurt Distillery of Herkimer.  It is fine, yes.  Very cinnamony.  For honey I used some ginger creamed stuff I got at one of the Little Falls festivals,  Cheese Fest or Canal Fest, I think, who can remember these things with a bad cold?  While I sipped, I looked at a Snapped On Demand.  I love Snapped.

I might as well throw in another graphic for good measure.

So everyone has a breaking point, according to the above picture.  Maybe I’ll have another hot toddy to make sure I don’t reach mine.  Happy Friday, everybody.

Pretty Random, Even for Lame Post Friday

I have to get my blog post done in a hurry, because I want to watch Dateline at seven.  It is about a guy who says he is too fat to have committed a murder.  Now if somebody would have said that ABOUT him, he would have been highly offended and probably would have committed a murder just to prove them wrong.

Actually, my throat is a little sore for any real howling.

I was going to put my picture of Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff with Bela saying, “Thank God it’s Friday,” and Boris saying, “You idiot, it’s Tuesday.”  I was going to say, “Ha, ha, it IS Friday.”  Then I remembered the Wolf Man and said, “Hey!”

Did I mention it is Lame Post Friday?  Perhaps you already knew.

I am just going to mention, in the interests of making a random observation, that I have reached the stage of menopause where I am constantly either having a hot flash or feel freezing cold.  Sometimes there is a very brief moment, usually just before or just after a hot flash, when I feel comfortable.  I know, nobody wants to hear my petty complaints about my bodily ills.  Hey, at least I didn’t bitch about the migraine I had earlier.  Oops.

Well, this is a rather useless post.  But perhaps my readers will forgive me if I put in a couple more interesting pictures.

I wouldn’t trust her.

Yesterday I talked a little about the murder mystery I am putting together for the Herkimer County Historical Society. Here is a picture from the one we did last October,  A G.R.A.V.E. Murder.  The hottie in the black dress was a suspect.

Looks like a fun bunch to party with, although one of them is a murderer.

To continue with the murder mystery theme of the day, here is part of the cast of Rubbed Out at Ruby’s, the murder mystery presented by LiFT Theatre Company.  We had been asked to add a little color to a fundraiser for the Landmarks Society of Greater Utica.

Ooh, look at me, I am over 350 words.  That is pretty good for a Lame Friday Post.  Have a lovely beginning of your weekend, everybody.

I Did Not Mean Pea Soup

What a perfectly dreadful day and I am not going to apologize for bitching about it!

But at least I will try not to continue bitching.  I had plans for after work, namely getting some Mohawk Valley adventures in before the bad weather starts, both for blogging purposes and to write something for Mohawk Valley Living magazine.  First I had a dreadful headache all afternoon, which got even worse as it got closer to quitting time.  Well, my head doesn’t feel quite so bad now, but the weather!  Yikes!  There is flooding in various places, a fog you can hardly see through, and it is still raining.  It seemed quite irresponsible to go anywhere.

Full disclosure:  I went somewhere.  I went to a big box store that needs no plug from Mohawk Valley Girl.  I needed yarn.  Let’s be reasonable:  if I am going to be stuck inside for the weekend, I have to do SOMETHING.  Clean my house, you say?  I SAID BE REASONABLE!!!  I intend to watch either true crime shows or monster movies and crochet.  I might bake something if it gets too cold in here.  It may not be a weekend worth blogging about, but I expect to enjoy it.

As I left the store, I said to two different people, “This fog is as thick as peanut butter!” Imagine my disappointment when neither responded properly with, “You mean pea soup.”  Of course I would have said, “You eat what you like, I’ll eat what I like!”  Luckily, I was not on an iceberg about to crash, but if I was I would certainly have yelled, “LAAAAND HOOOOOOO!”

Anyways, this will have to do for my Friday Lame Post.  If you are a local reader, stay off the roads if you can.  If you cannot, PLEASE be careful!
