Vampires for Christmas on Monstrous Monday

He looks kind of like I feel.

Hello, it’s Monstrous Monday.  I am dreadfully tired.  Did I work too hard today?  Did I play too hard all weekend?  Does it really matter?  I say no, it does not. What matter is that I make some semblance of a blog post before I sleep.

He does not look as if he is bidding us velcome.

Well, that didn’t work.  I was just looking for a Christmasy picture in our downloads, since Thanksgiving is over and so Christmas can begin.  Instead, I saw this lovely shot of Bela Lugosi that I don’t think I have used before.  Well, who doesn’t love a vampire for Christmas?

“Did somebody say vampire for Christmas?”

This vampire is hanging in my living room.  My nice husband Steven gave him to me for Christmas several years ago.  Please note the green stocking hanging around his neck.  You can also just about see the green jingle bell in his right hand.  We often mix holidays in our house.

Oh dear, as I was looking through my Media Library, I saw that I did have that picture of Lugosi.  Well, I can’t remember every picture of Bela Lugosi in my collection.  It is unreasonable to expect it.

I don’t really look anything like this, but the words fit.

I close with the picture that reminds us:  I’m not perfect, and I can’t even pretend to be close.  On the other hand, I have made some semblance of a blog post.  I’ll try for a better one tomorrow.

Thankful for Boris Karloff

It has been a lovely Thanksgiving holiday and birthday for me.  Yes, my birthday fell on Thanksgiving this year, and every year it is the day John F. Kennedy was shot.  Today I am 55, speed limit year, as a friend of mine said, or as I like to say, I have two nickels to rub together.  Did you hope I had something profound and meaningful to say about the day or my age?  How long have you been reading this blog?

I think a cup of tea would go down rather well about now.

I thought I would throw in a random picture to liven thing up.  It is, after all, Non-Sequitur Thursday.  Who doesn’t love Frankenstein’s monster?  If it is you, you might like to find another blog to read, because he is one of my favorites and makes frequent appearances in my  posts.

Speaking of favorites…

And I just remembered it is the unofficial start of the Christmas season (but let us not embark upon a discussion how early that stuff goes up in stores. Not on my birthday, at least).   I ADORE Boris Karloff.  I like Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, but I greatly prefer to hear Karloff’s real voice. So soothing!  So mellifluous!  I wonder if I can talk Steven into watching Bedlam or Island of the Dead tonight  (just to mention the first two that occur to me that I know we have).

I wore the tiara for a good portion of today.

Getting back to the non-sequitur portion of the day, I include this picture that Steven shared to Facebook this morning.  I do not publish my birth date on my Facebook page, but my dear husband will not allow me to fly under the radar thusly.  He posted a status wishing me happy then later shared this picture with more well wishes.  I was not especially upset, because one could do a lot worse than get a bunch of well wishes one was not expecting.  Dare I say I am thankful for all the love?

In any case, Happy Thanksgiving, Happy Thursday, and thank you for tuning in.  Now I have some Boris Karloff movies (or something) to watch.

I Truly Wussed Out

I guess yesterday was a true Wuss-out Wednesday, since it is almost 5 a.m. on Thursday as I begin to make my blog post.  I can’t even call it a Blogger’s Sick Day, because I manage to post something on those days.  These things happen, I suppose.  For anybody who thinks I still party heartily enough that I have not yet gone to bed, although it pains me, I must disillusion you.  But never mind that. I must make some semblance of a blog post.  Since I did not have a Monstrous Monday, I’m going to go with some monster pictures.

He is probably having tea.

I am having my morning cup of coffee, and I am feeling rather monstrous.  I just imagine I will feel less so after coffee.

George Zucco is marvelously theatrical.

I share The Mad Monster poster, because I am mad at myself for not making my blog post yesterday, when I was supposed to.

A monster of the natural sort, although this is actually a machine.

I throw in Bruce, the shark from Jaws just because he caught my eye when I was looking through my Media Library.  Some may not consider him an authentic monster, since he is technically an animal, but I say Jaws is a monster movie.

“One more thing!”

I end with my favorite, Nosferatu.  This has been yet another quite foolish post, but I do not apologize.  For one reason, the Thursday post I’ll make later may be even worse.

Moving Slow on Monstrous Monday

Nobody does! Oh, I suppose YOU do (you know who you are).

I haven’t used this charming gentleman in a while, but he seemed appropriate.  It was a grisly hot day in the Mohawk Valley today.  Really, there were all kinds of warnings on the news about how we should stay hydrated and get our exercising done early in the morning.  I worked too early to run, so I just didn’t bother; judge me if you must.  The sad thing about that is that, quite abruptly, running has gotten fun again.  As I watched the afternoon drag by, I was sorry I was not going to run.  I looked forward to running on Tuesday, when temperatures are supposed to moderate somewhat.

Safety first! Walk, don’t run!

As I was looking through my Media Library for a picture of a monster running (which I don’t think I have anyways), I saw the above, which I believe I have not used recently. It is, of course, from Night of the Living Dead (1968), back in the days when zombies did not run but lumbered threateningly and people for some reason were often unable to get away.  I understand zombies move faster these days.  I have not see a recent zombie movie.  I don’t much like horror movies after the late ’60s.  They got too slashy for me.  There are, of course, exceptions.  Some newer movies are more atmospheric and psychological, and there are a few I like even if they did go through a tanker truck of fake blood.

“Who were you expecting, the Avon Lady?”

Thinking of blood, I close with my favorite blood-sucker, Nosferatu.  I’m calling this a Monstrous Monday post, or did you figure that out already?  Longtime readers may recall that I wilt and become quite useless in the heat.  I am brain dead.  Perhaps I am a zombie.  Today I am the lumbering kind, but tomorrow I hope to run.

I Need Some Nosteratu

The obligatory psycho eyes!

Hey, it’s Lame Post Friday! I have not shared monster pictures all week, so I thought I might indulge tonight.  I open with a monster of the human variety (using the term “human” loosely), the murderous Rhoda in The Bad Seed, as played by Patty McCormack in the 1956 movie. She is shown with her mother, played by Nancy Kelly, who does a good bit of scenery chewing herself.  Steven and I are watching the movie now.  I wanted something cheesy, familiar, and fun.

I did not mean to make a real movie blog post about The Bad Seed.  I merely mention it to set the scene, as it were.  It is the end of a long week, and I am tired.  I need some Nosferatu.

“Ah, fresh air!”

Here is the picture I always think looks as if it is in front of Little Falls Antique Center at Canal Place.  Just to give a little local flair.  For a little more local flair, I am sipping some Reisling from Merritt Winery in Forestville, NY.  I have not been there but have sampled the wine at tastings at Valley Wine and Liquor in Herkimer, NY.

I just flashed on Dracula, saying, “I never drink… wine”  (of course he pronounced it “vine”).  That is where the vampire and I differ.  Therefore I will close with a picture of Frankenstein, “Drink!  Good!”  Come to think of it, he may have been talking about gin.  Well, one must make do after all.

Tea is good, too.

This is Boris Karloff in 1931’s Frankenstein, on a break.  Just to complete the scene, we are now at the point in The Bad Seed where the characters are drinking gin and tonic.  Damn, that’s one of my favorites!  Well, wine is good, too.  Happy Friday, everyone!

It’s Lame Post Friday and I Want Monsters!

OK, I typed in that headline, went to my Media Library, and said, “I can’t use that!” to every monster picture I saw.  What the hell, me?  Why don’t I just take a blogger’s sick day and drive on.  All I want to do is knit and watch true crime television anyways. And now I have to go turn the meatballs again.

There.  I was cooking with wine, and now I’m letting the bowties cook for another ten minutes.  I could do a cooking post, since I am getting a little creative, but, dammit, I’m in the mood for monsters.

OK, they haven’t made the monster yet, but what an atmospheric shot.

I do like a grey shot of a cemetery.  And just look at all those crooked gravestones.  I always heard that when a gravestone was tipped, it meant the soul that had been buried there walked. I say cool, although others may say it’s just erosion.  I try not to argue with such people.

I’m not sure what he’s doing, but he is definitely more ambitious than I am this evening.

Here’s the monster!  Yes, he is Frankenstein’s monster or The Monster, not Frankenstein.  I personally do not have a problem with anybody calling him Frankenstein, although I think “Frankie” is a little precious.  However, I am not the arbiter of these things.

Sometimes we all need a little help from a friend.

To round things out with three pictures, here is The Monster having a tea break.  Ah, tea.  Perhaps I will have a cup.  After my glass of wine. It is Friday, after all.

Lame Headache, Monster Pictures

If this was not Lame Post Friday, I might be tempted to have another Blogger’s Sick Day.  I left work early with a migraine.  It’s better now, but I still have a naggy little headache.  So much for my health woes.  Let’s post some monster pictures.

“You think YOU have a headache!”

Earlier today, I observed that my hair has grown out to the point where I either have to cut it or spend more time growing it before I will like it again.  I also thought it made kind of a square shape on the top of my head.  So I thought I probably looked like Frankenstein, and that made me feel happier about it.  My work friend, Karen, said my hair has been looking nice lately and pointed out that hair does need to be cut on a regular basis.  I personally want to do another St. Baldrick’s event and be bald.  Maybe in 2019.

Maybe Dr. Frankenstein should have put this brain in his monster.

This is a shot from The Brain From Planet Arous (1957).  I seem to remember it is a very silly movie, but since my brain is kind of throbbing, I thought it was appropriate.

One more picture and I’ll sign off.  Hmmm…

Everybody needs a little help sometimes.

I think if somebody would have offered that monster a nice cup of tea, a good many rampages could have been avoided.  Perhaps I shall have a cup of tea myself, although I do not feel inclined to go on a rampage at this time. Happy Friday, everyone!

The Grinch Stole My Weekend!

Monster, you are not alone.

I thought I would do a Middle-aged Musings Monday with Monsters. I like monsters.  And I think many can identify with the sentiment expressed by Frankenstein’s Monster (I capitalize it, because I feel he is a friend).  I suppose there is no point in harping on the fact that it is Monday and we don’t like Mondays, so I shall merely express the thought and move on.

“Every Who down in Whoville liked Christmas a lot…”

Here is one of my all-time favorite pictures of a couple of my all-time favorite guys:  The Grinch and Boris Karloff.  I thought it was the best thing in the WORLD when I heard, at a fairly young age, that Boris Karloff was the Grinch.  I had never seen Frankenstein, but I knew quite a bit about it.  Now that I am a true fan of the movie, of old-time horror movies in general, and of Boris Karloff, I relish seeing our DVD of that classic cartoon.

I guess I have expressed all these sentiments before.  We just watched How the Grinch Stole Christmas the other day, and came across that photo on Facebook.  I knew I would use it in a blog post.  I’m only sorry it is not a better blog post, but, as I often say, you’ll have that.

The title just now occurred to me, and I rather like it.  Full disclosure:  Nobody stole my weekend.  I had a weekend, I enjoyed it, it passed as time passes, I await the next one.  However, one is not best served by spending five days of the week merely anticipating two.  I will find useful things to do and accomplish during my week.  I will write blog posts about them.  Happy Monday, everyone.

Oh, I just realized, I said “Middle-aged Musings with Monsters.”  I suppose you could count The Grinch, and that makes two.  Still, I’ll feel better if I include one more.

“I still don’t know why they wanted me to be in this blog post.”

I bet you thought I was going to go with Nosferatu.  Maybe we’ll see him on Tuesday.

Graveyard, Nosferatu, What’s Not to Like?

I was feeling better than I felt yesterday, so I went running.  I was going to do a Running Commentary post, but in the first place, the run was not that memorable.  In the second place, my headache is back and I have to start thinking about dinner.  As I was looking through Facebook, hoping for a little inspiration (oh, don’t give me that hoary cliche that inspiration follows writing, sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t, and sometimes you do so get it before you write).  Where was I?  Ah yes, I found a monster movie picture, and you know how I love to make a post of monster movie pictures.

SO atmospheric! I love it!

It is from the James Whale Frankenstein.  It reminded me of another picture of a cemetery in another horror movie.  I knew I had seen it on Facebook at some point but could not remember what page.  I went to The Golden Age of Monster Movies, a group I am in, and began scrolling through their photos.  Of course I could not find the one I was looking for, and I do not have all night to search for an obscure picture.  However, I soon found a shot of my favorite guy, Nosferatu.  I must share Nosferatu.

I remember this shot from the first time I saw this movie, when I was in the sixth grade. I was scarred for life, but, you know, in a good way.

So I gave up on doing a graveyard theme and just looked for a couple more pictures I liked.  I soon found the following:

We recently watched this one. I should write a blog post about it. I haven’t written about a cheesy horror movie in a long time.

I have no idea what this is from, but Peter Lorre, Vincent Price, a severed head, what’s not to like?

So this is my Wuss-out Wednesday post for the week.  I don’t say I won’t have another day of monster movie pictures and silly commentary, but at least I won’t call it Wuss-out Wednesday.  As always, thank you for tuning in.
