Monsters, Don’t Fail Me Now!

Hello and welcome to Monstrous Monday.  I am really out of words this evening, so let me start right out with a monster.

Scary creature, check. Scantily clad woman, check.

This monster looks familiar to me, but I am not sure I have ever seen the movie, although since it is directed by Roger Corman, I feel sure I would like it.  I’d like to watch more old, cheesy horror movies, but my husband, Steven, is less often in the mood.

It’s not too monstrous yet, but wait.

Here is a shot from another Roger Corman flick which I have enjoyed on numerous viewings: Little Shop of Horrors.  I have never seen the musical stage play, but I disliked the movie musical.  However, to each his own, as the old lady said when she kissed the cow.

You should have known we’d get around to him.

Here is my favorite,  Nosferatu.  He’s scary!

Somebody’s hungry!

And here is the delightful natural monster from JAWS.  I suppose it is obvious by now that all I am capable of doing today is posting pictures and typing a few words about them.  If I did not have this obsession with making my blog posts at least 200 words long, I would be done by now.

I thought I might as well throw in a cute one.

One more monster put me over the top!  The cup he is in commemorates the last murder mystery we did for the Herkimer County Historical Society, Fabulous and Fatal.  Perhaps I should write a murder mystery featuring monsters.  That would be worth a blog post.

A Disjointed Post Is Better Than None At All

Oh what a difference a day makes!  Yesterday I was so ambitious!  I came home from work, mowed the front lawn, did the dishes, mended a pair of work pants, made my lunch, did a good blog post (or do I flatter myself?), and even had time to lounge on the deck with my husband.

Today I was thwarted in my plan to go running by a sudden thunderstorm.  I did a load of laundry and started to run in place on the mini-tramp (cue unkind remarks about how I personally am a large tramp).  This did not work out for me either, because my back started hurting fiercely.  At least the laundry is done (although still in the drier, this is the bad day, remember?).

So I guess this is a Tired Tuesday Post.  But at least it can be a Tired Tuesday With Monsters!  Where’s that Nosferatu?

“You were looking for me?”

Is Tuesday too early for Mid-week Monsters?  I cannot debate the matter now.  The fact is, my brain seems to be rotting into a putrid mass.  I can’t write.  I can’t even think.  Oh dear, it seems I am still capable of whining.  Quick, add another monster!

“I’m hungry!”

A monster of the natural variety.  We watched JAWS around the Fourth of July, which is an excellent time for it.

THIS is what my brain feels like!

A co-worker and I were talking about Steve McQueen today.  He was mentioning all the famous movies McQueen was in, but I confessed to having a soft spot for The Blob.

I do go off on tangents once I add monsters.  However, I am over 250 words.  I am going to call it OK and try again tomorrow.  Happy Tuesday, everyone!

Ah, the Holiday Weekend!

I have been on vacation (or shut down as we call it in the factory game) for the whole week, yet, as usual, I will take advantage of Lame Post Friday.  For one reason, it is a holiday weekend and I have had a few libations.  Judge me if you are so inclined.

I am ashamed to admit he has better teeth than I do!

Since it is 4th of July weekend, I suggested we begin the movie watching portion of our day with JAWS.  Even if JAWS was not so admirable as a movie, which it totally is, it would be  noteworthy as the first of the real summer blockbusters.  If I am mistaken about this (Hell, I’m no film scholar;  I just like to watch movies), please let me know about previously released summer blockbusters, because I would love to check them out.

OK, I just spent a goodly amount of time looking for a photo I thought I had of Fatal Attraction.  I had no luck.  Such is my lack of skill on the Tablet.  I suppose I will just have to mention that we saw it without benefit of illustration.

I had batter luck with our next feature, Invasion of the Body Snatchers.  It is playing as I type this (one letter at a time with the stylus, of course).  This is really a depressing movie when I think about it. Spoiler alert:  We’re all doomed.

A dramatic moment!

I don’t know what movie we will watch next, so I will close with an appropriate image I came across in my searches.

To us all!

Alas, I only have one Christopher Lee movie in my collection, and it does not include vampires.

Happy Friday and Happy Holiday Weekend!  And if you are obligated to work the weekend, don’t hate, please.  I’ve been there and may be there again.

All Wet on Wednesday

Feeling yet unable to write a real post and noting that I did not indulge in a Monstrous Monday, I thought I would let a few of our creepy friends cheer me up a little.  Since I adore alliteration (see what I did there?), I declare today Watery Wednesday and I search for creatures from the deep.  Or even the shallow, to match my mind.

“Oh, THAT’S where I left my lady in a bathing suit!”

Who doesn’t love Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)?  Oh, I suppose YOU don’t (you know who you are).  Julie Adams (pictured here with the green guy) (I’m guessing he’s green; the movie was black-and-white) is one of my Likes on Facebook.  She comes across as a very gracious lady.

“Am I interrupting?”

Less gracious but still all wet is the title character from JAWS (1975). I loves me some JAWS.

The alligator is off camera asking his agent why he isn’t in this shot.

This is Lake Placid (1999), a movie I really like.  I was looking for a shot of the alligator but could not find one.

My mood is, alas, not improving, so I shall close with a darker but still wet movie.  Carnival of Souls (1962) begins with a rather horrifying scene involving a muddy river.

The look on her face is about how I feel.

I got this shot from a Facebook page about the movie, https://www.facebook.com/carnivalofsouls1962/.  I like to give credit whenever I use it.

So it seems I am having a Wuss-out Wednesday after all.  These things happen to a daily blogger, at least to this one.  As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

I Truly Wussed Out

I guess yesterday was a true Wuss-out Wednesday, since it is almost 5 a.m. on Thursday as I begin to make my blog post.  I can’t even call it a Blogger’s Sick Day, because I manage to post something on those days.  These things happen, I suppose.  For anybody who thinks I still party heartily enough that I have not yet gone to bed, although it pains me, I must disillusion you.  But never mind that. I must make some semblance of a blog post.  Since I did not have a Monstrous Monday, I’m going to go with some monster pictures.

He is probably having tea.

I am having my morning cup of coffee, and I am feeling rather monstrous.  I just imagine I will feel less so after coffee.

George Zucco is marvelously theatrical.

I share The Mad Monster poster, because I am mad at myself for not making my blog post yesterday, when I was supposed to.

A monster of the natural sort, although this is actually a machine.

I throw in Bruce, the shark from Jaws just because he caught my eye when I was looking through my Media Library.  Some may not consider him an authentic monster, since he is technically an animal, but I say Jaws is a monster movie.

“One more thing!”

I end with my favorite, Nosferatu.  This has been yet another quite foolish post, but I do not apologize.  For one reason, the Thursday post I’ll make later may be even worse.

Still Blogging, But I’m No Blob

I am approaching my seventh anniversary of writing this blog (I may use “blogging” as a verb, but I shall not use the word “blogiversary”) (except, perhaps, parenthetically), and I am beginning to wonder if I am just not coming to the end.  SAY IT AIN’T SO!!!  The fact is, I have been sitting here with the laptop on my lap for some time now, and I have no idea what to write a blog post about.  I just hate to have a Wuss-out Wednesday after a Bad Attituesday after a Monstrous Monday after a Wrist to Forehead Sunday after a, oh crap, what was Saturday?

“What do you mean another silly post?”

When in doubt, throw in a picture of a monster.  A natural monster this time, the great white shark from JAWS.  At least, I think this is the mechanical shark, Bruce, making it a depiction of a natural monster (I add in the interests of accuracy).

As usual, I meant to write a blog post while on breaks at work.  As usual, I did not.  My obsession with solving puzzles once again got the better of me.  I managed to write a little on a letter to my sister.  And I wrote entries in my food and headache journal (I’m documenting and looking for patterns) (no luck so far).  I do not know what is wrong with me.  However, as Scarlett O’Hara used to say, tomorrow is another day.  I’ll throw in a couple more monster pictures and call it a day.

It creeps, and leaps…

I would say this is me: a blob, but in fact it is not.  The Blob oozed around quite actively, causing all kinds of trouble.  All I want to do is sit on the couch and knit.

I forgot I had this one.

I thought I would close with a picture of my favorite, Nosferatu.  I love that guy.  Happy Wednesday, everybody.

Monday Movie Meditation?

So there I was, sitting on the couch with my laptop and telling myself I could NOT again post the picture of Frankenstein’s monster saying, “No like Monday!”  I looked through my monster groups on Facebook for a new picture. Do you suppose I could find anything?  Then I saw this movie poster, which has nothing to do with Mondays and is actually a kind of a disappointing monster, but I downloaded it anyways, and here it is.

He is rather intimidating on the poster, I suppose.

I’ve seen Curse of the Demon a couple of times, DVR’d from TCM.  According to pre-movie commentary by Ben Mankiewicz, producer Val Lewton did not want to show the monster right away but was overruled by the studio.  I agree that it would have been much scarier to see the first victim looking utterly horrified by… what?  But these were pre-Jaws days.

For the uninitiated, in the first Jaws movie, we don’t see the shark until well into the movie.  This was actually making a virtue of necessity, because they had a lot of trouble with that mechanical shark, but it turned out to be SO effective.  Who knew?  Val Lewton, apparently, but nobody believed him.  Come to think of it, some post-Jaws movies could be a little more circumspect, too, but that’s a whole other blog post.

What a messy eater!

And here is the Jaws shark.  I feel he is a monster worth waiting for.  I’m afraid this was not a blog post worth waiting for, but what do you want from me on a Monday?

Not Independent from Bad Movies

OK, it’s really one bad movie, one good movie and one… eh (making that so-so motion with one hand).  It is Independence Day, or the 4th of July.  Some people don’t like it when you say the 4th of July, but I wasn’t in love with that movie Independence Day, so I stopped using that phrase for a while (and now I hear there’s a sequel that’s even worse!).  (Full disclosure:  I was moderately entertained by Independence Day and do not rule out seeing it again) (I do not intend to watch the sequel, although it cannot be denied that shit happens).

Where was I? Ah yes, celebrating our country’s birthday.  Not really.  I do patriotic things when the opportunity arises, I try to honor my country always; today I’m just enjoying a day off with my beloved husband Steven and our recently acquired pooch, Spunky.  We had a lazy start to the day, although I eventually went running, did laundry and took the dog for a walk.  My main object of the day was to watch some movies.  That is what I will concern myself with in this blog post.

We started with The Vampire Bat, a DVD we purchased at Valley Exchange in Herkimer, NY.  It was not very far into the movie that I realized we had seen it before.  It is in fact included on our collection of 50 Horror Classics. I wrote a blog post about it.  The movie was 73 minutes according to my calculations, not 63 as claimed on the box.  Steven said it seemed longer.

Steven suggested Jaws next, as something that moves a little quicker.  We have watched this movie many times; it is one of our favorites, especially on the 4th of July (we also saw it once on Severed Head Sunday, which I also wrote a blog post about).  Next we put in a video cassette I purchased at a rummage sale, Monster from Green Hell. I can’t tell you much about that, because, quite frankly, I paid even less attention to it than I pay to most of the silly movies we watch. I’ll have to watch it again to write about it.

We stopped watching movies after the Monster and are looking at crime shows on cable television.  A Dateline on ID just started that we have already seen more than once.  I must stop blogging and find another show to watch. I hope you are all having a grand weekend.  I go back to work tomorrow.  Won’t that be fun?

Severed Head Sunday

Spoiler Alert!  I’m going to be talking about several movies and I’m not going to worry if I give anything away.  Jaws, Strait-Jacket, Sleepy Hollow, The Brain that Wouldn’t Die.

We’re watching Jaws, because it is a good summer flick.  This is what I call relaxing movie viewing: something we’ve seen before that we can just enjoy.  Until the moment when Robert Shaw scrapes his fingernails along the chalkboard to get everybody’s attention during the big village meeting.  I cringed.

“My most UN-favorite moment of the movie,” I said.  “I don’t even mind the severed head.”

In fact, the first time I saw the severed head (you know, when Richard Dreyfus is underwater looking at the recently sunken boat), I jumped and said, “EEWW!”  But it’s a great moment in a scary movie.  Thinking about it, I came up with the title of today’s blog post.  I hope you like it as much as I do.

Last night we watched Strait-Jacket with the incomparable Joan Crawford.  This movie featured several severed heads.  It is one of my favorites.  I loved it even before I knew it was produced and directed by that master of such movies, William Castle.

Naturally I started thinking about other movies we could watch that featured severed heads.  My first thought was Sleepy Hollow, or as I like to call it, The Headless Everybody.  I told Steven we should watch some more severed head films and he said, “Like The Brain that Wouldn’t Die.”

“You’re a genius,” I said.

Ooh, as I typed all this in, the movie progressed and they are ALMOST to the moment of the severed head.  I must stop typing and watch.  As I look back on this post, I do not believe the Spoiler Alert was truly necessary.  No matter.  A couple of bold-faced words is always a good start for a blog post.  I hope you are all enjoying your Sunday as much as I am.
