Oh Yeah, My Friday Post

Yes, once again I am late as well as lame.  I was tired, what a surprise.  I made it through the day at work despite a headache (migraine? sinus? tension? I can’t say my headaches lack variety).  In fact the headache was pretty much gone by the end of the day, so I had that going for me.

Back home I couldn’t muster the oomph to cook, but did manage to watch television and knit.  I need to find a place to donate a bunch of scarves and afghans. Then I need to learn how to knit and crochet things other than scarves and afghans.

One of the things I watched on TV was a DVR’d episode of Svengoolie.  He was screening Frogs, a truly cheesy flick from 1972.  I had seen it before but did not remember a lot of it.  I hope I remember not to watch it again.

I wanted to throw in another picture and found this one of Herkimer County Courthouse.  I ran by it on this morning’s run (my excuse for being even later with Friday’s post).  Regular readers know how much I love Herkimer’s Historic Four Corners.

I suppose I could do a Saturday Running Commentary Post, but not right now.  I can only hope I will manage to make my Saturday blog post on Saturday.  We shall see.

Tuesday Trudge?

I have long tried, sometimes successfully, to motivate myself with the mantra Just Do One Thing.  I recently encountered a similar thought in a Facebook meme.  It went something like, Can’t do the dishes? Wash one plate.  Can’t take a shower?  Just wash your face.  So this morning when I woke up with my entire body and psyche screaming that they did not want to walk, I thought, Just go around the block.  Take a short walk.

I was doing really well with my early morning walks for a while.  I was up to 30 minutes, drinking water while I walked and making my way to the spring to refill my bottle. Yesterday I did not walk at all. This morning I told myself a ten minutevwalk would be acceptable.

Temperatures have dropped somewhat as fall approaches, but it was no cooler than sweatshirt weather.  That is fine with me as it gives me pockets for tissues and my phone.  I took a bottle of water but did not intend to refill it.  It was kind of nice to walk a different route from to the spring and back.

Down to Church Street and over to my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners, I decided.  That would make two blocks.  Further than intended but not as far as previously.  Thus I compromise with myself.

I did not take any pictures with my phone, because pictures taken in the dark so rarely turn out well.  But perhaps I can find something in my Media Library to pep up the post.

Here is the graveyard surrounding Herkimer Reformed Church.  I find it fascinating any time of the day or night.

As I approached the church, I saw a bicycle in the parking lot entrance.  It looked for all the world as if it had been left out with the trash.  Tuesday is trash day in Herkimer.  That can’t be, I thought.  Still, there it was, and who knows what the garbage collectors might think.  I took it upon myself to move the bike from the curb.  I leaned it against the railing of the steps leading up to the church’s back door.

That was the only excitement in my walk, which lasted 17 minutes, by the way.  So I got some semblance of exercise today.  And now I have made some semblance of a blog post.  Score!  Not bad for a Tired Tuesday.

Not a Lame Walk, But Maybe Lame Photography

I thought I would try for the Pedestrian Post I missed earlier this week, in lieu of my usual Lame Post Friday post.  Accordingly,  I armed myself with my smarter-than-me phone and set out shortly after supper.  I have done several of these picture walk posts in Herkimer, NY, and knew my adopted hometown would not disappoint.

My first photo op was the Grand Colonial Bed and Breakfast at 122 West German Street.  Unfortunately I was across the street and did not get a good shot.  So Herkimer did not disappoint,  but my camera did.  Most likely it was operator error as usual.

Continuing with my walk, I crossed Main Street and started down the lovely walkway over what used to be a hydraulic canal.  It is a wonderful re-purposed space, which, alas, I also did not get a good picture of.

I took a turn halfway down the path and walked down a sidewalk with few photo ops.  It was then I remembered I had been going to go to Mohawk Community Market on Main Street for the Grand opening on their newly renovated downstairs.  Well, it will still be renovated in days to come.  I’ll get there soon (preview of coming attractions).

Continuing my walk, I noticed the signs on the parking lot to the county office buildings.  Regular readers know that I can rarely resist entering where it says not to.

Oh, sure, THIS picture comes out!

I went out the entrance and the wrong way down Mary Street but did not take pictures of those signs.  Then I was on Main Street, heading towards my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners.

You can only really see two of the corners.

I tried, once again unsuccessfully, to get a picture of Suiter House.  By now I am too lazy to search my Media Library for one of those.

I had better luck with the 1834 Jail.

 

I could not resist a shot of the graveyard at Herkimer Reformed Church.

It was a very enjoyable walk.  I may take another one soon, if for no other reason than to get pictures of the things I missed.

Where Would I Have Walked?

I thought that instead of making a Tired Tuesday post, I would take a nice walk, take some pictures, and do a Pedestrian, such as I have not done in a while.  Unfortunately, it started raining just as I was about to start my walk.  It has not stopped yet.  There is every chance I will take a walk in the morning, but it will still be dark, making pictures ineligible (I’ve tried).  Perhaps I could share a few pictures from previous walks and talk about where I would like to walk to next time.

Graveyards are always interesting.

Here is a picture from August 2020, taken at my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners.  It is Herkimer Reformed Church.  I am fascinated by the graveyard.  Old gravestones are always so evocative.  Many of my walks and runs do take me by the Historic Four Corners.

I love a grey sky!

Here is my own neighborhood in August 2021, on an evening similar to tonight.  This picture, of course, was taken before the storm.  If I had gone for my walk earlier, I might have taken such a picture today.  However, it is a useless exercise to pine for what might have been.

I think it is looking a little worse these days.

This picture is from August 2018.  I often walk or run on Washington Street and see this former school.  I am always so sad to see a building go to waste.  Wouldn’t it be nice if somebody bought it and made it into something fun, like an arts center or antique mall?  I have neither the wherewithal nor the business expertise for such a project.  I don’t even know if the building is in good enough shape for any use, but it is fun to speculate.

I close with a picture from my own backyard in August 2018.  The Black-Eyed Susans are still there, although there are some other uninvited  plants growing there as well.  Perhaps I can get a picture of them tomorrow.  I would also like to cut a few to put in a vase in my house.

In the meantime, I am over 300 words and hope my readers have been at least mildly entertained.  I hope to go for a real blogging walk soon.

Blogging Is Not a Walk in the Park

I wanted to make a better blog post today so thought I would take a walk with my Tablet and do a Pedestrian Post with Pictures. Only where could I walk and snap where I have not snapped before? Hoping to find an answer, I set out.

My first thought was my beloved .Herkimer Historic Four Corners. For heaven’s sake, how many pictures have I taken of that? I continued down Bellinger Street. If this was yesterday, I could have gone to the Downtown Chowdown in Meyer’s Park, an event with food trucks and music. Well, maybe there would be some photo ops in Meyer’s Park anyways.

First I saw something apparently under construction surrounded by CAUTION tape. What could that be? Probably something worth a picture! Um, it turns out not so much. I took a picture anyways. I would probably mention it in the blog post (I did!), and my readers might be curious.

I’m not sure what it is.

Then I decided to take a couple of pictures of the 9/11 Memorial. I think I have taken pictures of it before but not for a while.

I didn’t sit on the bench.

Walking around the flowers, I took a close-up of some roses, then a shot of the whole thing.

I think the buds are prettier than the blooms.

Further on was an older memorial, to soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice. I should have run by that on Memorial Day. Once again, I took a close-up followed by a longer shot.

Having taken that many pictures, I felt free to continue my walk. I am trying to walk or run every day, because my legs seem to prefer it. Exercise is supposed to be good for one’s disposition as well. Is it good for my blog? I’ll let my readers be the judge of that.

Mid-Week Walk

I decided to enjoy today’s warm weather with a walk. For one reason, I thought I wou.ld take a few pictures along the way for a blog post (this one). I also wanted to go to the library. I set out almost as soon as I got home from work.

There are a lot more bare sidewalks these days. I always prefer to use the sidewalk. However, right away, I saw some stuff I was not inclined to plow through in sneakers. I took a picture, though, just for the blog.

It’s getting there!

In boots, I sometimes trounce through such a path, to make it better for the next person. Today I went into the road for a bit.

I soon realized I had forgotten a mask so could not go to the library. That was OK, though; I was more into the walk. I wanted to get a picture of a new addition to the neighborhood: a refrigerator with free food for the needy, in front of Herkimer Reformed Church. This also gave me a good reason to walk by my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners.

And it is artistically painted!

People helping people is my favorite! I backed up to get a shot that included part of the church.

I continued toward Main Street. I wanted to eventually go by Saint Francis Catholic Church on Bellinger Street, to get a picture of the statue of St. Francis wearing a mask. I decided to walk by the Methodist Church on Prospect Street to take a picture of the Blessings Box, a non-perishable version of the Free Food Fridge.

However, before i started down Main, a sign in front of the Herkimer County Historical Society caught my eye. I jaywalked right over to get a picture. I should totally join the race!

A run? Count me in!

On down Main I went and soon turned onto Park and got to Prospect. The Blessings Box has been in place longer than the refrigerator. I should make a donation to one or both of them.

Once again I backed up for a wider shot.

I stood in the muddy lawn to get the shot.

It was a short jaunt through Myers Park to get to the next church.

St. Francis could have gone to the library.

I did not back up for a wider view this time. For one reason, I was afraid the sun would be right in my eyes. For another reason, I was ready to get home. I enjoyed my walk, but you can have too much of a good thing.

I Should Have Listened to Al

This morning on Today, Al Roker was doing some feature about taking a walk. I did not get to see it, because I had to get to work, but I thought, “What a great idea! I’ll go for a walk after work and make a Pedestrian Post!”

Alas, I did not.

However blog post must be made, meaning, as usual, mine by me. Additionally, it is Lame Post Friday, so the bar is not high for a respectable post. Perhaps I could share a few pictures of walks I have previously taken. It could be a Flingback Friday, to follow my Throwback Thursday. Is flingback a word? My autocorrect seems to think so.

A great view for a number of reasons.

When I went running on Wednesday, I ran by my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners. The above is a shot of the 1834 Jail. This is where Roxalana Druse spent what she said were the best two years of her life, waiting to be hung after murdering her husband. Regular readers may remember I played Druse in the play Roxy at Ilion Little Theatre in 2015.

Or I could have gone uphill.

This is upper Main Street in Herkimer, a hill I sometimes run up. I’m afraid not lately, but I am ever hopeful of improvement.

I personally am looking forward to snow free sidewalks.

I was over 200 words before this, but I like to use three pictures. I took the recently when I was walking home from work. Plowing through the snow burns more calories than prancing down bare sidewalks. However, you can have too much of a good thing.

Can I have too many blog posts? I hope not. Happy Friday, everyone!

Monday Mosey in the December Dark

Yesterday wasn’t too bad of an evening weather-wise, so I thought I would take a walk. I brought my phone in case of any photo ops.  I have mentioned how I hesitate to take pictures of people’s houses without their permission. One Facebook friend told me I could take a picture of her house, but, alas, her lights were not on when I went by.   Still, I found a few things to snap.  I discovered after I got home that my pictures had not turned out very well.  Under the heading Waste Not, Want Not, I decided to use a few anyways.

A lot of houses are beautifully decorated, so I was enjoying my walk quite a bit.  However, I adhered to my rule of not photographing other people’s houses without permission.  Then something in a tree caught my eye.  It was a ghost!  Not, I imagine, the Ghost of Christmas Past, but I suppose you never know.

It IS still Halloween!

I decided to walk by my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners.  As I approached, I noticed a village decoration on a street lamp.  First I wanted a shot of a lighted tree in Herkimer County Historic Society’s Suiter House and Herkimer Reformed Church.

It looks a little like the Haunted Four Corners in these pictures.

I must get a closer view of this.  For one reason, there is a graveyard.

Oh Christmas Tree!

I crossed the street to get a shot of the County Courthouse.  As I look at all the reflections in these pictures, all I can think of is the “orbs” in other pictures that people say are ghosts.  I’m pretty sure these actually are reflections, but considering the ghost in the first picture and in the spirit of the season, I am willing to keep an open mind.

This building is also supposed to be haunted.

I wasn’t sure that would be a good picture, so I tried to take one from the middle of the road.  Naturally I picked a moment when there were no cars.

You can almost see the colors. Kind of sort of.

I had to hurry back across the street as another car came along.  I took a picture of the jail from the same side of the street.

Does the ghost of Roxalana Druse haunt here? I have never encountered her.

I tried to get another  shot of the church before continuing down Church Street.

I turned down Prospect Street to make my walk a little longer, since I had not been running since Saturday.  I saw some nice lights in front of Bruce Ward Realty.  I was sure a business would not mind being shown in my blog.

These lights are way more colorful in real life.

My real goal was Meyers Park, where I had previously noticed the gazebo (or is it a band stand?) was lit.

You can see the colors in this, but, alas, not as well as in person.

A Walk By The Corners

Today I agreed to run a couple of errands for my husband, Steven.  I decided to walk to do the second one, carrying my Tablet for blogging purposes.  Never mind what the errand was; there is no point in advertising my husband’s vices.

Any time I walk or run, I am happy when I can go by Herkimer Historic Four Corners, and so it was today.

I love old gravestones.

The first corner I encountered was Herkimer Reformed Church.  I love the graveyard that surrounds the church so took a couple of pictures of it.

Once across the street, I took a picture of the Suiter House of  Herkimer County Historical Society.

Must visit there again soon.

There was a person in the vehicle you see.  I called, “I was taking a picture of the building, not you!”  The fellow smiled and waved.  I tried to get a picture of the 1834 Jail, but it did not turn out very well.  Perhaps I can find a previous picture to share.

After enjoying the four corners, I continued down Main Street.  I did not take any more pictures, but here is an older shot of Christ Episcopal Church, which I also walked by.

It was a pleasant walk, and I quickly accomplished my errand.  I may or may not have stopped by the End Zone Pub and Grub for a beer (speaking of vices) but did not take a picture.  In any case, I avoided making a Tired Tuesday Post.  I hope to see you all on Wednesday, whatever it turns out to be.

Late Post, Good Run

I begin my Thursday with  Running Commentary Post.  For one reason, I never posted on Wednesday, and this way there is an off chance I will make two blog posts today.  Additionally, I got back from my run less than an hour ago.  IT! COULD! WORK! (That was a quote of Gene Wilder in Young Frankenstein)

I was ready to get up shortly after five.  Steven was still blissfully asleep, so it was a good day to start with a run.  When I looked out the window at the fog, my mind was made up.  I got ready quietly and off I went.

I have been running for several days in a row.  I really must go back to keeping a Running Journal so I can keep track of these things.  Yesterday I went for a long run up the hill to Herkimer College (previously known as HCCC), so I thought a shorter, easier run would be acceptable.

For most runs, I turn left out of my driveway and head toward German Street.  Today for something different, I turned right, going the way I go when I walk to the post office.  I went through Meyers Park, another familiar route for me.  When we first moved here and I started running again (after several sedentary years and gaining over 30 pounds), I made it a habit to always run through the park.  I went on really short runs in those days, but you have to start somewhere.

After the park, I headed toward Main Street.  I decided to keep going in roughly that direction till I had run for ten minutes then head home.  It would probably take me more than ten minutes to get home, what with following a different route, so that would be a good plan.

The plan worked fine.  I went on a couple of streets I don’t often go on (the village is too small for there to be many I’ve NEVER seen).  I admired several flower beds and envied a few screened porches.  I ran by my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners.  I ran for 23 minutes.  To put that in perspective,  I ran 40 minutes yesterday,  33 the day before.

I still don’t have a plan for running my Virtual Boilermaker 15K,  but my training seems to be going  well.  I’m feeling pretty good about it.  Now to work on my writing!
