Will I Plant Flowers?

Time for a quick Throwback Thursday Post, if my Tablet will cooperate. It is beginning to move as slowly as my brain sometimes does. Yikes!

Pretty!

Here is a picture from June 2020 and my last container garden. I could not get it together in 2021 (why does that goddam autocorrect always lop off the 2? It even did it just now when I was going to finish that question with “at the beginning of numbers”). It brings to mind one of my favorite New Year’s cartoons, which features this dialogue :

First guy: What do you think the new year will bring?

Seccond guy: Flowers.

First guy: Why do you think that?

Second guy: Because I am planting flowers.

I still wear the same leggings, socks, and sneakers.

This is another shot from 2020 (again witth the disappearing 2!) (Twice!). Perhaps it would have been better to continue with the flower theme, but the image of leisure rather appealed to me. I may not have much lounging time in the foreseeable future. However, in a few months I hope to find time to plant a few flowers.

New Year, Same Old Blog

So I partied a little too heartily on New Year’s Eve. I don’t imagine I as the only one to do so. And at least I didn’t drink and drive. It is not nearly so dangerous to drink and blog. Today, however, I am feeling tired, drained, and fairly wordless. Well, obviously not entirely wordless.

Do you suppose those are his New Year’s Resolutions?

When in doubt, throw in a picture. This is Nosferatu, one of my favorite monsters (why is “monsters” underlined? That’s how you spell it! I should know). I know, it is not Monstrous Monday nor yet time for Mid-week Monsters. What can I say? Sometimes I need a little monster.

I get Fay Wray and Glenda Farrell mixed up.

Mystery of the Wax Museum is a New Year’s movie for me, because it opens on New Year’s Eve. However, we did not watch it this year.

The real monster?

I was searching my Media Library for one more picture and decided to use one of me. I don’t think I am any more monstrous when I drink than otherwise, but in general I am kind of a stinker.

Right now I am a stinker approaching 200 words on my first blog post of 2022, although my WordPress timestamp may have declared yesterday’s bit of foolishness to be that. Will I post every day in 2022? We shall see.

Lame Post New Year’s

We had a delightful New Year’s Eve with the result (but really, who knows where to place blame and what good does it do anyways?) that I had a wanging headache this morning. Once the headache passed, we had an enjoyable New Year’s Day. Now I must make my blog post. On the brighter side, holiday or not, it is Lame Post Friday.

I have been thinking about writing a post pondering the idea of New Year’s Resolutions. New Year’s Resolutions have fallen into disrepute. Some people proudly proclaim that THEY do NOT make New Year’s Resolutions. The more honest admit to setting self improvement goals when appropriate, in disregard to what the calendar may say. Others just let the statement stand, along with the implication that they are perfect, with no need for resolution to improvement.

The other day at work, a lady was asking about New Year’s Resolutions. She said she liked them, because she liked the idea of a new beginning. I, personally, like them, because it makes me feel that I can improve myself and my situation.

This year, I have heard the thought that we should let up on ourselves and not add the pressure of Resolutions to our current COVID anxiety. This is a chance, the thinking goes, to be gentle with ourselves.

How about this for a New Year’s Resolution: I resolve not to judge others for whether they do or do not make a New Year’s Resolution. I will even refrain from judging them for judging me, as they may, for my making and failing to keep mine.

And as others have said, may your Happy New Year outlast your New Year’s Resolutions.

Year End Monsters?

Very festive, no?

Here is my view of New Year’s Eve.  Our plan all along was to not go out to party hearty, but to sit home on our couch.  Well, sometimes things do not go as planned.  Sometimes they go even better.

I unexpectedly got out early from work today, leaving at 10:30 a.m. rather than 3 p.m.  Woohoo!  I went to the grocery store with Steven and to the post office.  What else?  Well, I had put on my new Christmas llama leggings.  I thought it would be nice to go out for a drink.

We ended up at the Waterfront Grille in Herkimer,  sitting at the bar and sipping wine.  It was a lot of fun!

Now I am home again and, to be honest, not inclined to write much else. Are other bloggers waxing eloquent about the year ending and the year ahead?  How excellent for them if they are.  I, personally,  have very little of substance to say.

However, I am having quite a nice time on this last day of 2019. Perhaps I can, leave it at that for today’s post.  Well, maybe a monster picture or two,  just for good measure.

“Was somebody looking for a monster?”

I don’t know that we will be looking at Nosferatu tonight.  But I would like to look at other monster movies tonight.  Then again, New Year’s Eve isn’t the only night that is good for monsters!

“You can find me any time of year in the warmer climes!”

Happy 2020, everyone!

Foolishness Part Two

I have been looking forward to making this post since I signed off on my last one.  Here are pictures from July through December 2017.

“I don’t always do Shakespeare plays…”

I was going to choose Nosferatu but decided on my friend Tucker looking like the Most Interesting Man in the World.  He is in costume for The Tempest, LiFT’s Summer Shakespeare production, a wonderful theatre experience for all involved.

“I could do a Shakespeare play.”

OK, here is Nosferatu.  I couldn’t leave him out, could I?  This is the shot in which I thought the background looks like the Little Falls Antique Center, which LiFT rehearses and performs in front of.  So the pictures kind of relate, right?

It was the first annual, and I was there!

This being a kind of a Year in Review, I include something about running.  I ran the Boilermaker 15K in Utica in July, then I ran the East Herkimer Fire Department 5K in October (although this photo was under September in my Media Library), AND I did the Reindeer Run 5K in Little Falls in December.  Full disclosure:  I have not been running since.  But I mean to take it up again soon.  No doubt I will make blog posts about it.

He looks quite delighted to be there, doesn’t he?

Here is a Halloween-y photo and a plug to a local business:  The Old Barn Marketplace on Route 5, Little Falls.  I wrote about them for Mohawk Valley Living magazine.  I shall no doubt go there again and write a blog post about it.

Gotta love me some Joan Crawford.

Here’s a shot from I Saw What You Did, a William Castle movie Steven got me for my birthday in November.  I just loves me a cheesy horror movie with Joan Crawford.

It was a fun day!

I thought I would end with a picture from the Reindeer Run 5K, which I mentioned earlier.  It was a fun run on a fun day.

And this has been a fun post to make.  Happy New Year, everybody, and let’s have a great 2018.

Wrist to New Years to Murder

NEVER BLACKMAIL A MURDERER!!!! HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO SA Y IT??

I guess a few more, but I don’t suppose it matters, since witnesses to murder rarely do.  Do murders ever?  I imagine some do, especially the one ones to murder that we never hear of, that is, the ones that do get away with it.  And there is the part of murderers I rarely understand: if they got away with it, you rarely hear their names.  What’s that all about?  Who wants  to do things where people don’t even know that you did it?  Or am I just an approval junky?

I guess none of this matters on New Years Day, or as some like to call it, “National Hangover Day.”  Oh, don’t go pointing the finger at me! I am quite hangover free today (about tomorrow, I make no promises).  Who wants to think about murder on New Year’s Day?  Oh well, I guess a few people must.  Policemen.  Newswriters.  The producers of Snapped.

And here we come to the second point of today:  it is Sunday.  For me, Wrist to Forehead Sunday.  I can’t think about a blog post.  All I want to do is watch Snapped.  But Happy New Years, everybody, nonetheless.  I hope you are all having a lovely holiday weekend.

Turns Out Polonius Was Right

It is New Year’s Eve, although as the previous two posts may have pointed out, it will probably be dated January 1, 2016.  I can’t worry about that now.  I must make my post!  (Said with a dramatic gesture.)

It is not Lame Post Friday, my usual place for half-baked philosophy, yet what better time can there be to wax philosophical than the threshold of another year?  Oh, you can probably think of lots of times (you know who you are). Why do I even bother with these rhetorical questions? HELLO!  THAT ONE WAS RHETORICAL TOO!!!

There is some controversy about the efficacy of New Year’s Resolutions.  Many people firmly eschew them. Others embrace them with fervor.  (Look at me articulating with the E words: “efficacy,” “eschew,” “embrace!”)  I personally am of two minds here.

Part of me says, “Take any opportunity to improve yourself, you need it” (yes, I often talk to myself in the second person).  And for another reason, how can you worry about self-improvement during the holidays?  Start a diet with all those Christmas cookies and candy around?  Clean the house amidst all those decorations?  Work on that novel when you have shopping, wrapping and partying to do?  It’s madness, I tell you! (Again, with dramatic gesture.)

The other part of me says, “You’re setting yourself up for failure!  You’ll never stick to it, and then you’ll feel bad about yourself!”  Quite frankly, I think this is a spurious argument.  Say I start a diet in January then eat a pan of fudge brownies in February.  Does this mean I have to wait until next January to start another diet, thus wallowing in self-loathing for 10 months?  Well, I guess that would give me a chance to eat a lot more brownies…

My real problem is that I feel all self-conscious, like I’m doing the cliche, obvious thing, having a New Year’s Resolution. None of the cool kids are doing it.  And by “cool kids,” of course I mean the unusual, alternative, unexpected kids.

And then I come to the stunning realization:  EITHER WAY, I’M FOLLOWING A CROWD!  Some people make New Year’s Resolutions, some do not.  Whatever I do I’m wrong.

Or, whatever I do, I’m right.

Happy New Year, everybody.

Cold New Year’s Walk

This New Year’s I learned a valuable lesson: Party anyways. I have spent the day feeling as tired and useless as if I had tied one on last night, and I really did not. Then again, I didn’t have a headache or upset stomach, so perhaps I am onto something with this moderation and early bedtime. Still, I thought some people would like it if I began my post with “party anyways.”

I deem it acceptable to do one more vacationish post (I am, after all, the arbiter of these things in my own blog). I could wax philosophical about New Years, as many people do (half-baked for me, of course) (I’ll save it for Lame Post Friday). Instead, I offer another pedestrian post.

The cold snap continues in the Mohawk Valley. The next two days are going to be even worse, so we were determined to take our beloved schnoodle, Tabby, for at least a short walk today. We bundled up. Scarves, hats, mittens. I did not put Tabby’s coat on her. I thought to save it for the even colder days to come.

It had snowed. Snow has the advantage of offering some traction, so I thought it would be a less dangerous walk. Then again, it was so cold the snow didn’t pack down at all, and ice lurked treacherously underneath. I kept warning Steven to be careful. Then I worried a little about myself, because just about the time I’m warning somebody else is when I get into difficulties.

The sun was still up, but behind rather extensive cloud cover. We admired the eerie grey light which bathed the neighborhood. I especially enjoyed the sight of bare trees against the sky. I pointed out that if we had waited till after dark for our walk, we could have noticed who still had their Christmas lights on and been disappointed at those who did not.

I don’t understand this passion for taking decorations down so soon after the celebration. Traditionally aren’t we supposed to leave them up till January 6th? The sight of a few lights still up helps ease my post-Christmas letdown. We saw one tree still lit in somebody’s window, and a fox lawn ornament with a New Year’s hat and Santa socks.

Some Christmas trees were already out by the curb. One had almost no needles left on it.

“Didn’t they water it?” I asked in a disapproving tone of voice.

We did not go for a long walk. I was grateful when we were almost home, because my nose was running. I had provided myself with scarf, hat, mittens and poop bags, but had neglected a handkerchief. Then I noticed my mittens were beginning to wear out. Oh dear. I called Steven’s attention to this, but pointed out that as I had stolen them from my sister sometime in the late ’80s, I really had no room for complaint.

Well, that seems to me not too bad a post for a tired New Year’s Day (on Wuss-out Wednesday, I might add). Or do I flatter myself? No matter. It is time to get on with 2014. Happy New Year, everybody.
