Another Pre-Holiday Post

My pre-holiday weekend continued today with a few indoor chores and a couple of outside stops.  Full disclosure:  I was going to have a Lame Post Friday, even though technically Wednesday was my Friday this week, and I make no promises about how lame this post will be.  Then again, do I ever?

It was pouring rain this morning, so I did not go running.  I know, some people run no matter what the weather, but I sometimes let myself off the hook.  Later on I went for a walk, which was nice.  It is much easier to dodge around the puddles and not get sopping wet from the thighs down if one moves at a slower pace.  So at least I got some exercise.

Before my walk, I got out to a couple of non-local non-distinctive stores, hoping to beat the crowds.  I guess I did to some extent, although I kept getting in people’s way.  They were all very nice about it, which I chalked up to the time of year, although I have observed that many people in this area are nice at all points in the year.  At home I did a load of laundry and made a couple of Christmas treats  Further full disclosure:  many indoor chores remain to be accomplished.

Later on, Steven and I went to the Herkimer County Historical Society, one of our favorite places, for further Christmas shopping.  From there we drove down Main Street and parked in a handy space to go to three cool places:  Rose Quartz Stand, the European Deli, and Click’s Cakes.  I’ll have to write better blog posts about all four of those places (preview of coming attractions).  Then we drove to Asteroga Ale House, because we were hungry and wanted food.

After re-fueling we went to Valley Wine and Liquor for a wine tasting.  I do like to try new things. After that, we were ready for the bra off (me) sweats on (both of us), TV watching portion of the evening. We are looking at an obscure offering called Stalking Santa  (2006).   We found it when one of the local movie rental places went out of business (oh how I miss movie rental places!).  I highly recommend it.

I guess this blog is about to become All Christmas All The Time, but is that such a bad thing?  If so, comment, please, and let’s have a discussion. In the meantime, Happy Friday.

My Favorite Lame Post Friday

Lame Post Friday is getting lamer and lamer, I fear.  Perhaps I am coming to the end of my usefulness as a blogger.  SAY IT AIN’T SO!!!!!

I have been having a fun evening.  My husband, Steven, and I went with our friend Kim to a beer tasting at Route 51 Beer Belly Bob’s Discount Beverage Center in Ilion. We purchased some beer, of course.  I do not drink as much beer as I used to, but sometimes a beer really hits the spot.

Kim had commitments elsewhere, so Steven and I continued to dinner alone at Salvatore’s in Herkimer.  We had soup and garlic knots.  Yum! Then Steven had a cup of coffee and I inadvisedly had a piece of chocolate spoon cake for dessert.  Oh, was it ever good!  However, it was also very rich and filling.  If I dare to step on the scale tomorrow morning I will no doubt find I have jumped up three or four pounds.

Now we are home, and Steven put in our DVD of Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol, one of his (and my) favorites.

Oh, sure, just give away the ending!

Christmas time is all about revisiting old favorites, isn’t it?  When we got to Salvatore’s, we had to sit in the parking lot to hear the ending of “Do They Know It’s Christmas” by Band Aid.  I love that song and had not heard it yet this year.  Inside the restaurant, we enjoyed more favorites:   “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Sleigh Ride,” and Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,”  as well as another favorite I had not heard yet this year:  Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmas Time.”

Well, talking about that has put me in a sweet, cuddly Christmas mood. I’m going to knit and watch the rest of this Christmas special.  Full disclosure:  next I may watch Dateline.  After all, I still gotta be me. Happy Friday, everyone.

Pre-Reindeer Lame

Oh, is this ever Lame Post Friday!  I got nuthin’ in spades!  I’ve been hurrying around trying to get ready for the Reindeer Run 5K tomorrow.  I have to worry about my running outfit AND my outfit for after the race, when we are enjoying Christmas in Little Falls.  I should have made a list. Do other people suffer this anguish for a simple 5K?  It doesn’t matter if they do or not.  I do, and, as the saying goes, I gotta be me.

Right now, me is somebody who is not capable of making a decent blog post.  This is terrible!  This is the worst it’s ever been!  What shall I do?  Quick, post a picture and say something about that.

A jolly and silly elf.

This is me dressed for last year’s Reindeer Run.  I plan on wearing the same shirt, leggings, and shoes, but different accessories.  I hope to post a picture tomorrow.

Looking very happy pre-race.

And this is me, another runner, and the fabulous Moose on the Loose.  The Moose ran with me for the last bit of the race, when I began to whine that I started my sprint too soon and I wasn’t going to make it.  She assured me I would too make it, and I did.

I expect I will make it this year too.  I probably won’t be very fast, and I don’t promise not to whine. Ooh, there was a Freudian typo:  I first put “wine” instead of “whine.”  In fact, I have not had any wine all week, in preparation for the race.  I promised myself a nice glass of dry red later.  Aaaahhhh.  Suddenly I am feeling better about the whole thing.  Happy Friday, everyone.

A Tiny Lame Post

It is time for my Friday Lame Post and Full Disclosure:  I am tipsy. Steven and I went to Tiny’s in Utica, NY, with our friends Phyllis and Jim.   I had a few glasses of white wine and I am quite tipsy.  I feared this would happen. Phyllis is quite the bad influence.  It is part of her charm..

Oh dear. I am only up to 57 words (as of the end of the first paragraph).

On the left looks like what I did have; I shall return for the one on the right.

Ah, I find a few photos on Tiny’s Facebook page to help my post along.

Obviously not this time of year.

Here is an outside view of the place, which I also got from their Facebook page.  I took a few pictures tonight of their  awesome nutcracker collection. I must share them as well. And go back and take more pictures.

In the meantime, I am sorry tonight’s post is so lame.  Yes, it is Lame Post Friday, for which I usually make no apology.  However, since tonight I am more under the influence (of alcohol, not anything worse), I feel more culpable.

I say no matter. It is Friday.  I have posted.  I will strive for something more coherent tomorrow.  In the meantime, Happy Friday everybody!

The Blog Seed

I know I had my Lame Post Friday on Wednesday this week, but I really don’t have much in me today except that silly title.  We are watching foolish movies and had made our way to The Bad Seed (1956) when I thought I had better make my blog post before I get too tired.

Those psycho eyes!

Steven always says he would like to watch a version of this where the little girl, Rhoda, really seems like a sweet little girl at the beginning, so you are shocked when she turns out to be a murderer (I didn’t need a spoiler alert for that; everybody knows that’s what The Bad Seed is about).  I wonder if I could get Ilion Little Theatre to let me direct it.  Then I wonder if I could find a kid actor good enough to be Rhoda.  Of course, I have supreme confidence in my own directing abilities to think I could pull it off.  I rather doubt I will have a chance to be disproved in this case.

Earlier today we watched The Ape (1940) with Boris Karloff.  Today (November 23) is Karloff’s birthday.  The movie is part of our DVD collection of 50 Horror Classics.  Karloff gets to use his beautiful voice, but the movie is kind of slow.

The poster is more exciting than the movie.

After that, we went on with the primate theme with The Ape Man (1943) starring Bela Lugosi.   The movie is part of a DVD I gave Steven called The Best of the Worst.  I don’t know if it was the worst movie, but it was certainly a very bad print.  We couldn’t understand most of the dialog.  When I had completely lost track of what was going on, I suggested we take it out and put in another movie, finally settling on The Bad Seed.

We did not watch long enough to see this dramatic scene.

There is no chance I will lose track of this movie, since we have seen it many times.  It is one of our favorites.  Still, what is the point of watching it if one does not actually watch it?  Therefore, I will hit Publish and return to the movie watching portion of my day.  Happy Friday, everyone.

Harvest Decorations on Thanksgiving Eve

So I need to make my blog post on Thanksgiving Eve and here I sit, with not much to say.  Then again, since I have the rest of the week off, it is like my Friday, so I will feel free to post lame, as it were.  Maybe I can pep things up with a few pictures, monster or otherwise.

Aren’t they cute?

Here are a few decorations for a pre-Thanksgiving post.  Full disclosure:  Steven and I did not decorate our house for the holiday.  After we missed decorating for Halloween, it was all downhill.  Will we improve matters for Christmas?  Perhaps.  Only time will tell.  Time certainly is a blabbermouth. My witty sister, Diane, once pointed out, “Time is relative.  Not our relative.”

But I digress.

These are decorations with a backstory.

Here are some of my favorite harvest decorations.  I think we got the bigger scarecrows at the Aubuchon that used to be in Herkimer and possibly Michael’s.  The little one Steven won in a claw machine.  The bigger two are sweethearts, and the little one is the boy scarecrow’s little brother.  The girl scarecrow thinks the little brother is cute, so she is happy to see him.  Her boyfriend is less thrilled, because he wants to kiss.  Don’t you make up stories about your decorations?

Another big smile is always nice.

I just got this fellow last year.  I impulse purchased him at Hannaford when I was buying produce.  I think next year I am going to up my scarecrow game and make a few myself.  For one reason, I have a lot of clothes that are wearing out.  It will be a way to reduce, reuse, recycle.

In the meantime, this is my Lame Kinda Like Friday Post.  I hope you are all having a lovely Thanksgiving Eve.  Try not to burn your fingers baking pies.

Lionel Barrymore on Lame Post Friday

Which is the devil and which is the doll?

I pause in our viewing of Devil Doll (1936) starring Lionel Barrymore for this week’s Lame Post Friday.  I LOVE Lionel Barrymore!  This movie is sad as well as creepy, but that adds to its charm.  I have seen the movie before and DVR’d from TCM again, because I thought Steven would like it.  Perhaps I will do one of my movie write-ups on it eventually.

In the meantime, I have a lame post to make.  As a slight break in the lame,  I will give a brief shout-out to one of our favorite local eateries, Salvatore’s Pizzeria and Restaurant in Herkimer, NY.  We sent out for wings, Bosco sticks, and fresh baked chocolate chip cookies.  The wings were what they call Sicilian:  medium sauce plus garlic butter and bleu cheese.  We had never tried them before. YUM!  Bosco sticks we have had before: fat bread sticks filled with mozzarella.  Another YUM!  The cookies had LOTS of chocolate in them.  TRIPLE YUM!  I can feel myself getting fatter as it digests.  I’ll try to eat salad tomorrow.

Full disclosure: I have not howled in a long time.

For now, I am anxious to get back to enjoying my Friday night.  Crochet, a movie, my husband, and a glass of wine.  I may be old and boring, but I like it. Happy Beginning of the Weekend, everybody!

The Sting of Lame Post Friday

Oh dear, it is Lame Post Friday and I am, indeed, lame.  Earlier today I went to a Wine Tasting at Valley Wine and Liquor with my friend Kim. Then we went to Asteroga Ale House for “just one” (of course it was two). Now I am sitting at home on my couch while my husband Steven watches The Sting.  I have always loved that movie, although as years pass I am increasingly less enamored of con stories.  Well, that is a discussion for another blog post, when I have had fewer than three glasses of wine.

I wish I had found a better picture of Redford and Newman,

I thought at first this was a picture of a VHS of the movie. That would be appropriate since Steven and I are currently watching a video.  Yes, we still watch some movies on video.  It takes time to replace a movie collection such as ours with the next technology.

I spent a little time looking for better photos but could find nothing down-loadable.  No doubt there are more photos available, but we all know I am not internetally astute.

So what is a blogger to do on Lame Post Friday when one feels one MUST make a post but has only one apropos photo to share. Perhaps share one that is not so apropos?

He’s so fine.

Found another apropos photo!  The divine Paul Newman.  And that is a lovely place to stop for a Friday Lame Post.  I hope to see you all on Saturday.

A Brain With No Beer?

I really wanted to make today’s blog post about beer.  Beer Belly Bob’s was having a tasting, and I need to get more beer anyways.  I always feel more secure when I have beer in the fridge, even now that I rarely drink it.  Unfortunately, the scheduled tasting was cancelled.  I’ll have to get over there and purchase some beer for the fridge, but I just didn’t have enough oomph to leave the house again tonight.

Do I have enough oomph to make a blog post? The answer has to be yes, of course.  It helps that today is Lame Post Friday.

Only I don’t have a blu-ray.

Yes, we are watching The Brain That Wouldn’t Die (1962), which I believe I referenced in a blog post earlier this week.  It is one of my favorite cheesy movies.  I need more cheesy movie watching in my life.

That reminds me of a few guys I used to date.

I just thought I’d throw in a picture of the monster from that movie, perhaps to distract from the fact that this is a particularly lame Friday post.

I was just looking all through the pictures on Beer Belly Bob’s Facebook page, but I did not see any that would particularly enhance today’s post.  What to do?  Admit I am lame and move on?  Or search obsessively for a photo that fits?  Or just throw in a picture I like, hit publish and get back to enjoying my Friday?  I think you know what I am going to pick.

“What are you bothering me for?”

You just knew I was going to pick Nosferatu, didn’t you? Happy Friday, everyone.
