Please Excuse Mohawk Valley Girl…

I am going to ask you nicely not to judge me for taking an actual Blogger’s Sick Day yesterday.  My cold felt better and by “better” I mean “less horrible.”  I took some over the counter cold remedy that knocked me out.  When I woke up I made chicken soup and had a couple martinis.  I suppose hot toddies would have been more appropriate, but I just couldn’t face the honey.

So the first martini made me feel better, the second made me feel a little too good. I had some chicken soup, and went to bed.  Now I feel quite thoroughly embarrassed, still headachy and a little sick to my stomach. Well, maybe when the hangover goes away, it’ll take the cold with it.  That has happened to me before.  Mostly I am embarrassed because my mother reads this blog.  Good God, I’m 54 years old and still trying to hide my foibles from Mom.  Hi, Mom, by the way.

I also got up this morning determined to make up for all the stuff I did not get done on my week off. Accordingly, I put a load of laundry in the washing machine and opened my laptop to make this post.  Who knows what I might get done after a cup of coffee.  Maybe something worth blogging about.

Also Known as a Thelma Todd

There comes a time when I have to say, what the hell, body?  I have a bad blogging and writing week, for various reasons, then when I think I can salvage something on Thursday and Friday, I get completely sick with a terrible head cold.  I am trying to count my blessings — at least I am not nauseous and I did not have to work today — but I feel AWFUL!!!

So I am having a Lame Post Friday after all.  I’m not even going to post any monster movie pictures to liven things up.  Well, maybe one.

Nobody could be un-cheered by Nosferatu.

I spent most of the morning sleeping.  That was sweet.  Some food and a hot shower made me feel a little more human. Then I managed to drive to Utica to get my vehicle.  Oh, never mind why my vehicle was in Utica; it’s a long story and not very interesting.   The drive home was not fun, as the cold symptoms kicked back in, but I made it without being a danger to myself and others.

Back home I had a hot toddy.  I make them the way a doctor told me to many years ago:  hot tea with lemon and honey and a shot.  He recommended brandy or whisky, but I have Mohawk Valley Fire Moonshine from DikinDurt Distillery of Herkimer.  It is fine, yes.  Very cinnamony.  For honey I used some ginger creamed stuff I got at one of the Little Falls festivals,  Cheese Fest or Canal Fest, I think, who can remember these things with a bad cold?  While I sipped, I looked at a Snapped On Demand.  I love Snapped.

I might as well throw in another graphic for good measure.

So everyone has a breaking point, according to the above picture.  Maybe I’ll have another hot toddy to make sure I don’t reach mine.  Happy Friday, everybody.

Blogging is for The Birds

“To think that I’ve been feeding these little S.O.B.s!”

My bad blogging but good movie-watching week continues with a fast Non-Sequitur Thursday post.  I am into Alfred Hitchcock today.  I offered Steven a choice of The Birds or Psycho, and he chose The Birds. Murder and mayhem without being too disturbing.  And we get to make fun of Annie the doormat.  It is rather unbecoming of me, come to think about it, because I have sometimes acted the doormat myself, in my sordid, low-self-esteemed past.  I try to avoid such behavior these days, but you just never now what you might do given the right (or wrong) circumstances.

Not the party they were hoping for.

This was the only photo I could find quickly featuring Annie the doormat.  I can’t think of anything witty to say about Rod Taylor or Veronica Cartwright, so I will merely note their presence.

I’d scream, too!

Maybe I can talk Steven into watching Psycho next.  It starts slow then picks up and become quite satisfyingly creepy.  In the meantime, I am missing The Birds while I type in this blog post.  Full disclosure:  I think I am coming down with a stupid cold.  I hope I am feeling better tomorrow.  Perhaps I could forgo Lame Post Friday and write a good post, to make up for my bad blogging week.  No promises.  Happy Thursday, though.

More Movies on Wuss-out Wednesday

Yeah, it’s a bad blogging week.  I offer no excuses, but there it is.  At least I am making Wednesday’s post on Wednesday.  I thought I would look for pictures of the movies we are watching today.  I like movies.

Don’t they look fun?

When I got up from a nap (headache, what a surprise), Steven was watching A Mighty Wind, because of the good music.  I would really like to get the soundtrack of that sometime.

OK, I can’t find a picture of The Big Chill and I’m tired of looking.  That is the second movie we watched, because it also has a good soundtrack.  Then I could not think of a worthy direction to go, so I just kept suggesting movies I felt like watching till Steven agreed to Lake Placid.  I wonder if I can find a picture for that.

Now here’s a movie with some teeth.

Ah, I had some success with finding photos.  That is good, since I am having a problem coming up with more interesting words.

At least nobody is throwing a head at her in this shot.

One of my favorite aspects of the movie is the unlikely friendship that develops between Oliver Platt and the big-bellied sheriff.

Lake Placid is a surprisingly humorous monster movie, with likable characters and a few surprises in the plot.  I believe I have written about it at least once (what a surprise, I am too lazy to find the post and make a link).

I’ll call this a Wuss-out Wednesday post and take comfort from the fact that at least I didn’t wait and make it on Thursday. Happy mid-week, everyone.

Was This a Successful Blog Post?

I will begin this edition of Monday Middle-aged Musings by admitting that I am NOT what some people would call a successful woman.  Ooh, I just realized I could write an entire blog post about what constitutes success.  I’ll save that idea for another time.  However, today I received from my sister Diane a card reading, “11 Habits of Successful Women,” and I would like to talk about that.

Somebody sent Diane the card.  She wrote me that she does not have nor does she aspire to have all the qualities listed, so she thought she would pass the card along to me.  She invited me to pass it on to someone else.  I am still debating who I should send it to.  While I ponder that, I thought it would make a dandy blog post to note which of the habits I practice or would like to.

  1. She makes time for herself.  Hmmm…. I don’t know that I do that.  I certainly TAKE time for myself once in a while, most notably by sitting on the couch crocheting and watching a true crime show.  What I ought to do is make more time for cleaning my house, but I see that is not on the list at all.  That makes this a pretty good list in my estimation.
  2. She challenges herself with ambitious goals.  I ran the Boilermaker 15K, and I am writing a novel.  I’m going to count this habit as a “yes” for me.
  3. She educates herself and constantly improves.  Well, I read books, including a lot of history.  I would like to learn more, like a second language or sign language or how to play harmonica.  Let’s count this a a partial “yes.”
  4. She takes responsibility for every area of her life.  OK, does it count as not taking responsibility when you sit on the couch and say, “Honey, would you get me more wine?”  Because if so, then, no, I do not take responsibility for every area of my life.
  5. She smiles… a lot.  Oh, I do.  I smile at everybody all day at work, sometimes making a very silly grin.  It either makes them smile back, or it makes them wonder what I am up to.  And I smile at strangers in the supermarket, especially when I apologize for blocking the aisle with my cart when I am pondering grocery choices.
  6. She is financially savvy.  Not in the slightest degree.
  7. She has a life outside her job.  Obviously I do.  Otherwise, what would I blog about?
  8. She always keeps her promises.  I like to think I do, although it cannot be denied that shit happens.
  9. She is positive and enthusiastic.  Sometimes.  I think it would be annoying to be that way all time time, but I guess I couldn’t really say, because I have never encountered anybody who is.
  10. She celebrates wins, both big and small.  Oh, I do this.  Sometimes I celebrate when there isn’t anything to celebrate.  I like to celebrate.
  11. She helps others through selfless acts of kindness.  I don’t know about that, but I do donate the occasional afghan to a worthy cause.

So, I count four qualified “yeses,” five partial “yeses,” one “I guess not,” and one unqualified “no.”  How do you score?  Feel free to lie.  We’ll call it fiction.

Snapped then Swoon?

I pause in my Sunday activities to make a Wrist to Forehead post.  I am not currently posing with my wrist on my forehead (about to swoon on a chaise lounge, of course), because it is so far a pretty good day.  But I’m thinking this will not be a very good post, so perhaps I will swoon after I hit publish.  No matter.  These things happen, and we must make the best of them.

The 1920’s, Julie Andrews, what’s not to like?

My husband Steven and I watched this movie last night and earlier this afternoon. I purchased it at a garage sale over the summer.  Last night after watching Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte, Steven suggested we put in something silly we would not mind turning off.   In fact, we got into it and did mind turning it off.  Luckily, there was an intermission, because Steven had to be up early to get to work this morning.  When one reaches a good leaving off place, one likes to take advantage of it.

I made spaghetti sauce and meatballs earlier, the way my mother and grandmother used to make, although I forgot to add the tomato paste so it was not thick.  Nobody is perfect, after all.  Now Steven (dear, sweet man) is dong the dishes, and I am looking at Snapped, my usual Sunday guilty pleasure. And I thought, Ooh, it would be a good idea to make my blog post.

Naturally they are only showing episodes I have already seen, but you’ll have that. Especially as often as I watch Snapped.

When Steven is finished doing the dishes, I would like to watch a monster movie.  I am rather obsessed with monster movies.  I wonder which one we will choose.  Not knowing, I will close with a random monster movie picture from my Media Library.

I imagine he hates to be interrupted when he is eating.

Happy Sunday, everyone!

New Shoes and New Shirt

Ah January, time for the yearly trip to and blog post about Melfe’s Shoes in Ilion, NY.  Every January they offer a free t-shirt with purchase, so every January I get new shoes, which, by the way, my employer pays for.  It is a perk for which my feet and I are grateful.

I like to go first thing Saturday morning, when there is less likely to be a crowd, although I know the staff is good at handling a lot of customers in a short time.  I realize this is not the best time to shop for shoes. After work when my feet are nice and swollen might be better.  However, I had on work socks and figured I could make allowances for morning feet.

When I walked in and announced I was there for my annual work boots, Vicki, who has waited on me before, said, “You get the newbie, David.”

We walked over to the women’s section, and I started trying on shoes.  As I put on shoes and walked around, Vicki asked me how I was and how things have been.  I told her I wanted to get my husband back in for another pair of shoes.  Last year, we purchased him a nice pair, which he really needs, since he works on his feet all day.  I don’t see why I should be the only one in the family that gets new shoes every year.

I quickly made my decision, and got two pair.  I do like to switch off shoes, giving each pair a chance to air out for a day.  I picked a blue t-shirt.  They were also offering hats, but I knew I would get more wear out of a t-shirt.  I was delighted with my visit, and I am happy to give Melfe’s another shout-out.

Melfe’s Shoes is located at 64 Central Ave., Ilion, 315-894-4049.  Their website is http://www.melfes.com/.

Pretty Random, Even for Lame Post Friday

I have to get my blog post done in a hurry, because I want to watch Dateline at seven.  It is about a guy who says he is too fat to have committed a murder.  Now if somebody would have said that ABOUT him, he would have been highly offended and probably would have committed a murder just to prove them wrong.

Actually, my throat is a little sore for any real howling.

I was going to put my picture of Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff with Bela saying, “Thank God it’s Friday,” and Boris saying, “You idiot, it’s Tuesday.”  I was going to say, “Ha, ha, it IS Friday.”  Then I remembered the Wolf Man and said, “Hey!”

Did I mention it is Lame Post Friday?  Perhaps you already knew.

I am just going to mention, in the interests of making a random observation, that I have reached the stage of menopause where I am constantly either having a hot flash or feel freezing cold.  Sometimes there is a very brief moment, usually just before or just after a hot flash, when I feel comfortable.  I know, nobody wants to hear my petty complaints about my bodily ills.  Hey, at least I didn’t bitch about the migraine I had earlier.  Oops.

Well, this is a rather useless post.  But perhaps my readers will forgive me if I put in a couple more interesting pictures.

I wouldn’t trust her.

Yesterday I talked a little about the murder mystery I am putting together for the Herkimer County Historical Society. Here is a picture from the one we did last October,  A G.R.A.V.E. Murder.  The hottie in the black dress was a suspect.

Looks like a fun bunch to party with, although one of them is a murderer.

To continue with the murder mystery theme of the day, here is part of the cast of Rubbed Out at Ruby’s, the murder mystery presented by LiFT Theatre Company.  We had been asked to add a little color to a fundraiser for the Landmarks Society of Greater Utica.

Ooh, look at me, I am over 350 words.  That is pretty good for a Lame Friday Post.  Have a lovely beginning of your weekend, everybody.

We Have a Title!

One writing chore which has been on the back burner but is quickly moving to the front is the murder mystery I am putting together for the Herkimer County Historical Society.  Performance date is March 31, so I have time. Not oceans of time, but at least a mud puddle’s worth.

Of course I have been quite occupied with my 100 Days of Novel and getting my article(s) together for Mohawk Valley Living magazine, but I have been bearing my mystery in mind.  I have all the character sheets written and a good start on the clue sheet.  Additionally, I have been thinking about it a lot. I know, I know, thinking about writing is not writing.  Still, thinking is at some point a good idea, if not actually required (for example, I do not vouch for the amount of thinking that goes into my average blog post, but I’m sure you knew that).

I got a nudge from the Historical Society the other day when they Facebook messaged me asking for the title and a few details.  Well, details I have many, but a title, not so much.  I asked my husband Steven’s help.  He is sometimes very clever at thinking of blog post titles.  He came up with “Murder on Exhibit,” because the plot concerns an upcoming exhibit at the Historical Society.  The only thing I could think of was “Slaying at Suiter House”  or  “Slain at Suiter House.”  Suiter Memorial Building houses the society’s museum and collections.

While at work today I thought of a few other possibilities:  “Herkimer County Murder,” “Murdering Local History,” and “Museum of Murder,” to name a few.  AND I came up with the one we eventually picked:  “Secrets at Suiter House.”  “Murder on Exhibit” was the first runner-up.

I will share more details of the murder mystery in future posts (preview of coming attractions).  In the meantime, can you keep a secret?  So can I.
