Coffee and Cops, What’s Not to Like?

“Cheese it, it’s the cops!”  is what I usually say when I see a police car, quoting numerous cartoons from my childhood.  However, I really have great respect for the police and often enjoy talking to them.  I had a great opportunity to do so last Friday when the Town of Frankfort police department hosted Coffee with a Cop at Stewarts.  I walked in and announced to the first cop I saw that I was there to have coffee with a cop. He handed me a gift card for a 12 oz. cups of coffee.

Coffee with a Cop aims to bring communities closer to their police departments, where they can learn about each other in a relaxed atmosphere.  The aim is to increase trust and cooperation between police and the people they serve.

They were very nice about posing for me.

I asked how the officers enjoyed policing in Frankfort and received a very positive response.  Officer Louis Romano praised Frankfort as a close-knit community.  The department has a wide area to cover, as the Town of Frankfort took over policing for the Village as well as the Town of Frankfort as of Jan. 1, 2025.

Police officers cover the gamut of crime including domestic violence, burglary, and traffic offenses.  The force patrols approximately 100 miles of roads within the town.  Homelessness seems to be less of a problem in Frankfort than in surrounding villages, but the officers are equipped to deal with that as well.

The Chief of Police with a friend.

Several Frankfort residents stopped to talk to the policemen while I was there, sometimes to ask questions but more often just to shake their hands and thank them for their service.  Mayor Justin Smithson was present at the beginning of the event.  I was sorry I missed the Rock-n-Roll Mayor, but perhaps I will catch him at a future event.

Another photo op.

The police officers were quick to hand gift cards to anyone who entered Stewarts, giving everybody a chance to have coffee with a cop.  Many of those present expressed the hope that this will become a regular event in Frankfort and in surrounding villages as well.

The Blog Marches On

How about a nice Slacker Saturday post to start my Sunday off right?  I know, several things wrong with that statement.  To begin with, I have been up for hours. Went to bed early, got up early, haven’t had coffee or tea yet… I think this might turn out to be a Slacker Sunday as well.  Last weekend I was down with a cold, this weekend, I am just… down.  Not severely down, just…

Sign of the times? Or just of my life?

I quick threw in a picture to pep things up, as I like to do, and this gem from last March caught my eye.  I remind myself not to dwell on being down.  For one reason it makes a dull blog post.

Well, why not slack once in a while?

I took this picture in March 2021.  A March day when it was warm enough to sit on the front porch!  Oh do I miss porch sitting!  I have been cheering myself up lately with plans for spring.  Oh yeah, I did that in my last blog post, didn’t I?  That seems like a long time ago. Maybe I shouldn’t have skipped the morning coffee.

Doesn’t she notice the crazy eyes?

I go a different way with my third picture, because weekends are also a good time for black and white movies, especially the cheesy kind.  Many people do not consider The Bad Seed an especially cheesy movie, but I find moments of lovely melodrama, and I agree with what my late husband Steve always said, how can anybody be surprised to find out that brat murders people?

So now I have rattled on for over 250 words and said not much.  Well I will try for a Mohawk Valley Adventure sometime today to make a blog post about, or at least a Pedestrian Post with Pictures.  As always, I thank you for tuning in.

Best Lame Plans for Blogs and Gardens

So I did Wednesday’s post on Thursday then neglected to make Thursday’s post on Thursday or Friday, and here I am Saturday morning thinking I might just make a Lame Post Friday post.  Full disclosure:  I am feeling a bit lightheaded (cue jokes about how I am always somewhat dizzy).  This could be from the last remnants of my cold or it could be from the decongestant I took earlier (it was the kind with the D on the box, that you have to ask the pharmacist for) or it could be a kind of a migraine.  My head does not lack variety, I’ll say that for it.

What my head feels like sometimes.

I throw in a picture to pep up the post.  I do not remember where I saw this skull, but I like it.  Studying the picture, it appears to be on my stairs.  Is this skull somewhere in my house?  Maybe if I continue my efforts at cleaning, I will find it.  Just a little motivation to brighten up my day.

THIS is what I need!

I go a different way with my next picture, showing the rhododendron in my back yard one of the years it was especially beautiful.  I am SO looking forward to spring and hoping to plant many more flowers in my yard.  And maybe a few vegetables.  There are some flowers that may show up again on their own:  the above pictured rhododendron and forget-me-nots, some black- and brown-eyed susans, a few daisies…

From a more ambitious year.

I also hope to have a container garden on my deck.  Flowers, herbs, definitely some basil!  Then I’ll have some people over and we’ll sit amongst the plants and have some iced tea or wine or something.  Won’t that be nice?

I Mustache You a Question: Do You Like My Blog?

Hello and welcome to a Waste Not Want Not Wednesday post made early(ish) Thursday morning.  I gradually return to a more normal wake-up time as I move further from having gainful employment. Full disclosure:  I keep dreaming I still go to work.  In fact, the last dream I had this morning concerned the difficulties I was having trying to call in sick.  But we won’t discuss dreams; this is blogging, not therapy.

Twirl that mustache!

I quickly throw in a picture, to get back to the Waste Not Want Not theme.  I have previously shared the other side of this shot glass, or one quite similar, but I had not noticed the jaunty mustache on the other side.

I guess you can see the mustache, slightly distorted by the booze.

Here is the front side of the glass, which fascinated me because “Frangelico” was the basis for one of my all-time favorite character names, “Frangelica Inferno.”

I had to search the Media Library for this one!

Of course the mustache made me think of this lovely goblet, a present from the cast of Leading Ladies, the play I directed at Ilion Little Theatre, lovingly painted by my dear friend Jerry.

The other side of that mustache, just for good measure.

I used that glass as an effective prop in the murder mystery Fabulous and Fatal, which also featured Jerry in a pivotal role.

The other mustache, looking mysterious.

And to wind things up, here is my first attempt at the Frangelico mustache.  You can’t really see what it is but I thought the shot as a whole was kind of fascinating.  Or do I flatter my photographic skills?

In any case, I approach 300 words, and with five pictures and a pun in the title, I call this a respectable post, at least my my rules for me.  Are they good rules?  Does that matter?  Discuss amongst yourselves and feel free to share your conclusions in the comments.

Pre- and Post-Rehearsal Tired

I have less than an hour before I have to go to rehearsal for Prescription: Murder, the play I am in at Ilion Little Theatre (tickets went on sale today!).  I neglected to take pictures at the last rehearsal I attended, so perhaps it would be a good idea to finish this post after rehearsal and add some illustration.  That way I could study my lines some more.  Hmmm…  study my lines, make a blog post.  Study my lines, make a blog post… It is a rough decision.

Picture from Media Library to denote passage of time.

I looked over my lines and went to rehearsal but forgot to bring my phone so took no pictures  The above is a shot from auditions.  None of the fellows pictured were at tonight’s rehearsal, but I thought we could stretch a point.  Full disclosure:  looking over my lines some more was not as effective as I had hoped, because I did not know them very well at rehearsal.  However, I have time to improve.

My cold continues to plague me as I strive to get things done.  I managed a few things today before rehearsal.  The beauty part is there is no place I have to be tomorrow and no chore I absolutely must get done.  I think.  I hope.  I guess I will find out.

In the meantime I have managed over 200 words on a Tired Tuesday post.  Or was this a Blogger’s Sick Day?  Discuss amongst yourselves.

This Post is Not in the Zone

I thought I was getting better but it suddenly seems not so much.  Oh dear. I started to write a post about New York Power Authority (NYPA) Energy Zone, an interactive kind of museum located outside the Utica Zoo, and my brain suddenly would not cooperate.  I had visited it before the cold defeated me, and got a few fun pictures.

I forget what they were learning here.

The kids had badges they swiped at the various stations, where they learned different things about electricity and power.

I thought the tunnel was cool.

I suppose I learned a few things myself, but I didn’t have a badge so couldn’t actually do any of the interactive things.  I’m sure I would have picked the wrong choices every time anyways.

Another tunnel view.

I said I wanted one of those tunnels in my house, but I don’t know where I would put it.  Maybe in the back yard.

Me and Cheryl  on the team.

Of course if there is a place where you can put your face  in a hole and take a picture, we are going to do it.  I KNOW the caption is not grammatically correct, but that is the order we are in, and “I and Cheryl” sounds silly.

Evie and Dan on the team!

Evie, Dan and Sheppy.

Sheppy pretending to climb the tower.

Evie modeling stylish headgear.

Well, with the help of pictures, I guess I have managed to make a blog post after all.  If only I had a little more energy myself, my life would be perfect.  Perhaps I could get the Zone to send me some.

For more information on NYPA Energy Zone, you can visit their website at https://www.nypa.gov/communities/visitors-centers/ny-energy-zone

I Manage to Make a Post

Yesterday (Thursday) and today (Friday) are Blogger’s Sick Days.  I have a terrible cold, not as terrible as it could be, but it sure isn’t making me happy.  So right now I am making a little placeholder post, then I will make some tea or something.  I wonder if I could bestir myself as far as a pot of chicken soup.

What a difference a year makes!

This is a picture from last February.  It was a very warm day, and my sister Cheryl and her grandkids, Sheppy and Evie, and I went to the playground.  I feel the picture is appropriate because of how one’s head spins when one has a cold.  Also, it is a fun picture.

Random snow picture.

This is from February 2021.  There was less snow.  I need to get out and take a few pictures of what I have been struggling with lately.  However, I have gotten my car unstuck.  Multiple times.  So I have that going for me.

Me drinking tea?

This is, in fact, not me, but I feel that old and wicked.  It is the villainess from The Atomic Brain.  Her evil plan is to transplant her brain into a young and beautiful body.  You know, I don’t think that’s tea she’s drinking.  I bet it’s bourbon.  Maybe single malt scotch.  I’ll have to watch that movie again and see if they say.  Hmmm… cheesy old horror movie might be just right for my current state of mind.

In any case, I am over 250 words, which I find more than respectable for a placeholder post.  It also has elements of Throwback Thursday and Non-Sequitur Thursday.  Who says I can’t multi-task?  Oh yeah, I said it.  Silly me.

Pre-Rehearsal Waste Not Want Not

I am going to attempt a nice little Waste Not Want Not Wednesday post before my rehearsal for Prescription: Murder, the play I am in at Ilion Little Theatre.  I have looked over my lines, but I have just a bit of a headache (can’t get through a post without whining at least a little, can I?), so that didn’t go too well.  Sipping hot tea, which I am currently doing, may help.

Do you know this guy?

I burst right in with the most striking picture I have.  I noticed this guy when I was on my way to the read-through for Prescription: Murder.  I drove around the block to take a closer a look, then came back the next day when the sun was up so I could take a picture.  It is outside the now defunct Remington Arms factory in Ilion, NY.  A developer may be purchasing the site to, you know, develop it, so I hear.  I hope this fellow doesn’t put them off.

This was last week; there is more snow now.

Back to the subject on many people’s minds these days:  All that damn snow.  I got this shot walking by Meyers Park in Herkimer.   I tried to zoom in on the pavilion to get the pretty lights but was unsuccessful.  I was also interested in the partially buried branch.  Under the heading It Takes So Little To Please Some People.  That is a saying my brother and sisters and I used to have, when we wanted to feel superior.  I could write a whole blog post about that, come to think of it.  What is wrong with being easily pleased? It means you get to feel pleased more often!

Another attempt at the buried branch.

I do enjoy winter scenes, especially the bare branches of the trees.  I will try for a Pedestrian Post with Pictures later this week (preview of coming attractions).  For one reason, I need the exercise!

It Snow Joke that I’m Tired

I did not make my Tired Tuesday post yesterday, because I was, you guessed it, tired.  I actually did less Tuesday than I did on Monday.  Monday I cleared my driveway twice.  By “cleared my driveway” I mean I took off the top layer of fluffy stuff and cleared the plow pile-up as best I could.  Also I did a shovel-width on my front walk, in consideration of pedestrians, who usually end up walking in the road anyways, but I can’t help that.

For anybody not in the area, I just mention in passing that the Mohawk Valley has been pummeled with snow and ice since… I was about to say Saturday, but it got bad before Saturday.  Things were also bad on Thursday, because my rehearsal was cancelled (regular readers may remember I am in a play at Ilion Little Theatre), but I can’t remember other than that.  Listen to me whine.  I’m in a house with power, sipping hot tea while my furnace works away, and I don’t have to go to work.  Let’s count our blessings, shall we?

This was in March 2017, but you get the picture.

I throw in a picture to pep things up.  My deck actually looks different now, because I did not put the things on it away in the fall.  In my defense, my life fall apart in 2023 and I have not yet picked up all the pieces.  The ones I do pick up, I keep dropping.   I do not mean this as more whining; only, I try to cut myself a break sometimes instead of beating myself up, which has ever been my habit.

On the other hand, some might argue I deserve, maybe not a beating, but perhaps a stern talking to sometimes.  For example, Monday and yesterday I toiled mightily trying to get the ice off my front steps, at least for a wide enough space for me and the mailman to get up and down safely.  In my head I kept saying, “2005, Cindy.  You’ve had since 2005!”  2005 was when we moved in and had the porch roof replaced.  Steven and I are (were) big porch sitters.  The roof fellow did not put the gutter back.  I felt sure we could do it.  Perhaps we could have.  Perhaps I still can.  These thoughts did me no good as I managed to clear some for the ice.

I was relieved there was no mail on Monday.  Tuesday when I heard the mailman, I stuck my head out the door, quickly remembered I was in slippers and the porch was covered in snow, craned my neck around the door and asked were the steps OK and assured the mailman I tried, I tried!  He said I did great and it was a losing battle.  I thought that was very nice of him, because I really had not cleared all that wide a space, and his feet are bigger than mine.

Somebody got some fun out of the snow!

I close with a jolly picture, to give us cheerful thoughts.  It has not been warm enough for snowman building, and the wind chill has been prohibitive, but weather changes eventually.  If I manage to build a snowman, I will certainly write a blog post about it.  Once again, I thank you for tuning in.

I Will Go Back to Back in Time!

I neglected to do a post about the great new antique place I found:  Back in Time Collectibles & Crafts in Richfield Springs, NY.  I found it quite by accident.  I was headed for the library, which of course I drove right past (anybody who knows me is not surprised).  Turning back and finding the library, I saw Back in Time and could not resist checking it out.

One lump or two?

As soon as I walked in the door the collection of tea cups caught my eye.  My sisters, mother, and nieces have had a few fancy tea parties.  It is actually my turn to host one.  I don’t know if I could dare purchase and use such beautiful old cups!

You know I looked at the jewelry!

Vintage jewelry, on the other hand, I rarely hesitate to wear, unless I am going someplace where I may get too rambunctious.  Regular readers know I do not always behave with the proper decorum of a woman my age.

Something for the Disney fans.

Full disclosure:  I am not a Disney addict, have never been to World or Land, and I don’t love Mickey Mouse.  If anybody feels the need to cut my acquaintance because of this, I will understand.  I took the picture, because I like to include pictures I think people will like.  Also, there is a lot going on here:  Hot Wheels and PEZ, for example.

Tins I can get into! Not literally.

I do like tins.  Actually, I have too many tins.  My late husband Steve and I were in the habit of picking them up at rummage sales and such, because we thought we would put Christmas presents in them.  “Put a present in a present,” was Steve’s motto.  It didn’t always work out.  For one reason, we couldn’t always fit a present to a tin.  For another, sometimes the recipient would say, “Oh, here’s your tin back!”

I did not buy any Christmas presents at Back in Time.  For one reason, I was there in January.  When I buy Christmas presents that early, I tend to forget them by December.  I bought a sweet tiny frog for myself.  Steven used to collect frogs.

Back in Time Collectibles & Crafts is located at 112 Main St., Richfield Springs, NY, phone number 315-858-6003.
