I’m 61 and I Still Run

I thought of that rhyme as I walked my cool-down walk after today’s run.  I’ve been 61 for over 11 months, and this is the first time I thought of it.  What the hell, me?  However, waste not, want not: I’m still 61 and I can use it for a headline for a Running Commentary post.

I did not run for the last two days, so I really felt obligated.  In my defense, yesterday it was snowing and I just couldn’t trust the roads.  I walked later in the afternoon and couldn’t trust all the sidewalks, but it is less of a problem for walking.  I did not trust the sidewalks today but stuck to the roads for the most part.  In general I prefer to stay on the sidewalks.  I like to give myself every advantage of not getting run over by a car.

I often run by the Court House.

Full disclosure:  This picture is from February 2021, but it shows a landmark I ran by and it shows snow.  Regular readers may recognize this as part of Herkimer’s Historic Four Corners, a favorite place for me to walk or run by.  I was on the second half of my run by this time.  I was using the Map My Run app on my phone, making a lot of turns in hopes of mapping out an interesting shape, and saw that I was just over a mile.  Go, me!

I was holding the phone in my hand, because I could not find the strap I hold it on my arm with and was too impatient to look for it.  It made it not so easy to blow my nose as I ran, but you can’t have everything.

Also not taken today.

I could not find the picture I wanted to share but came across this one.  I was wearing that headband today.  I purchased it in Niagara Falls while on my honeymoon with my beloved dearly missed husband Steve in 1990.  My hair is not that long, but it’s growing.

My run was not too bad.  I went almost two and a half miles in 33 minutes, which while slow is faster than my recent runs.  I did not pet any dogs, although I saw a couple nice ones.  I did get to pet one of my favorite doggy friends, Pugsley the morkie on my cool-down walk (it was right after I thought of today’s headline).  I may be ready for the Reindeer Run 5K in Little Falls this December.  I hope they have one.

A Happy Ending to the Tail!

I just thought I would make a quick post in case anybody was concerned about the cute little dog my friend Jerry and I rescued from the highway on Saturday.  As I said I took her home and out for a walk.  We actually went for several walks over two days, because she seemed to really like to walk.  I purchased some dog food for her and put her pictures on several lost pet pages on Facebook.

So stinkin’ cute!

They scanned her for me at the Humane Society and found no chip.  However, my friends were also sharing my Facebook post and scanning other Facebook posts.  I, too, was logging on every few minutes and going to every pet page I could think of.  I confess, part of me wanted so badly to keep that sweet dog!  She was so loving and good!  But I felt sure somebody was missing her terribly.

Finally not one but two friends messaged me with a post of pictures of the dog, saying she had run away from the area where we had found her.  It was clearly the same dog.  I called, a man came and picked her up, and she was very happy to see him.

I would just like to say that THIS is Facebook at its best!  And community at its best.  People who don’t know each other are able to connect and get a lost dog home with the help of other people sharing and looking.  I feel happy I had a part in rescuing this little cutey.

Rather a Different Adventure

“Well, you’re really having your adventures today,”  my friend Jerry told me.  The adventure was supposed to be a visit to Windy Hill Orchards to pick apples and listen to my favorite band, The Posers.  We did that, and I will make a blog post about it (preview of coming attractions).  We went a different way home and found ourselves in the midst of quite a different adventure.  On Route 8. I thought I saw a small animal run across the road and up a side road.  When we got closer we saw it was a small dog.

“We have to turn around!” I said.  I was driving.  Jerry said there was someplace ahead, but I used a person’s driveway.  I know most folks don’t like that, but this was an emergency.  We quickly spotted the little pooch, about to walk up the driveway of a deserted trailer.  I jumped out of the car.  She came right to me, tail wagging (it wasn’t till later we determined it was a female, but for convenience’s sake, I will say she).

Picture taken much later, obviously.

Jerry held her in his arms as we got back on the road.  I declared my intention of taking the sweet dog home and putting her on Facebook and of checking Facebook lost pet pages.  Jerry could have taken her home, but it may have caused his Chiweenie, Chip, to go out of his mind.  We wanted to be considerate of Chip.  He is not a young dog.

Ignore the mess, admire the dog.

I have wanted to get my house more dog ready before adopting a pet.  Now I feel really stupid for taking so long about it.  However, the dog seemed very interested in walking around and sniffing at things.  I followed her around with my phone, hoping she would stand still enough for a photo op.  When she paused by the door and looked at me expectantly, I thought a walk might tire her out enough that she would stand still.  I could not find the leash I thought I still had so used a strap from one of my soft briefcases.

Picture taken while walking.

I don’t know if I was successful, but I was trying to get a shot of her unusual grooming.  The hair on her shoulders forward is longer than behind.  Clearly this dog has been groomed and taken care of.

Tomorrow I will reach out to the Humane Society to see if this girl is chipped.  I have posted to two lost pet sites and asked my friends to share my own post.  I would be most happy to give this nice dog a home, but I feel sure her peeps are missing her terribly, as she is certainly missing them.  Additionally, it is not ideal to adopt a dog about whom one knows nothing.

Of course I am happy to render what assistance I can to our furry friends.  But this is not the kind of Mohawk Valley Adventure I would recommend.  By the way, if anybody recognizes this pooch, please let me know!

Walking the Blahs Away

I took a walk today, hoping to make a Pedestrian Post with Pictures.  Full disclosure:  I had a hard time getting started this morning and a hard time getting anything done.  The Monday blahs?  Could be, but what is my excuse for the rest of the week?  However, my purpose here is not to whine but to blog, so let me get on with it.

It is important to me to run or walk every day, for my mental and physical health.  Yesterday I did not walk very much but did some work out in the yard so pretended that counted.  This morning I could not convince myself to run, and it was afternoon before I finally got out and walked.  First I wrote some post cards to a few of my post card peeps.  Regular readers may recall that I like to send post cards to people who could use a pick-me-up or that I just want to say hello to. I put them in my bag along with my cell phone, my notebook (the paper spiral-bound kind) and library card (it is on a key chain) in case I ended up at the library.  I put on my Garmin and off I went.

It felt good to walk.  I saw a dog standing in front of a house and wondered if I should turn town the next street to avoid him.  Then I saw his person putting what I thought was doggy doo in the trash.  The dog was patiently waiting for him.  What a good dog! I didn’t turn.

“He was so nicely waiting for you just now,” I said to the person when I reached them.  “What a good dog!”

“He was waiting for you,” the guy said. “He wants to say hi.”

I said hi and asked if I could pet him, and did.  He was a very sweet dog.  I continued my walk, turning down Main Street.  I soon came to Herkimer Reformed Church.   That church always fascinates me, because it has a graveyard.

I may walk in and read some of the gravestones one day.

I did not pause long, because I was, after all, walking for my health.  I proceeded past Basloe Library, where I did not take a picture, and to the post office to mail my post cards.  Then I continued my walk, deciding not to end at the library after all.  I got to pet another dog, a cute little puppy.  I asked the guy walking him if I could.  He said yes, but the dog was a little skittish.  He picked him up and said, “You’re OK, Ace.”  Ace let me rub his chest a little (most dogs like it when you do that).

I took one other picture.  In an overgrown lot, I noticed some cool-looking yellow flowers.  I suppose there are apps that tell you what different flowers are, but I don’t know from apps.  Maybe I could look for a book on flowers at the library, when I finally get there.

Is it just me, or do they look a little Halloweeny?

I walked for over a half hour and was glad I went.  I see I have blathered on for quite some time in the blog post.  If you have read the whole thing, I thank you.

Alas, No Tim Curry!

It has been a while since I made a Running Commentary post (of course I am too lazy to go back and check), and I took a pretty good run this morning, so I thought, let’s do it (to paraphrase Nike) (although I did not wear Nike sneakers).  It had been a few days since I ran (judge me if you feel like it), so I had no great hopes, but one has to get through the sucky runs to get to the good ones.

The first thing I noticed was that it was colder than I had expected.  I was in shorts and a t-shirt.  The t-shirt was one from a run in Little Falls, a 2 mile and a 10K.  I ran the 10K.  I am not up to running 10Ks these days, so I thought the shirt would encourage me.  I need all the help I can get.  I ran up a minor hill into the residential area behind Valley Health.  There are a few more hills in that area, but I avoided the big ones.  I was feeling wimpy.

I checked any sewers I passed for Tim Curry dressed like a clown.  I have never seen any of the movies about IT or even read the book, but I am a huge Tim Curry fan.  I was, not surprisingly, doomed to disappointment.  Most of the sewers even had a bar where Tim Curry’s head would have been.  I wondered if municipalities had added the bar after the movie as a precaution.  These are the thoughts that keep me distracted as I run.

After distracting myself for the first mile, I realized that my legs were feeling pretty damn good.  This was awesome!  I could so run!  To make things even better, I got to pet two dogs.  At least, I petted one.  The other was so eager to be petted, she could not be still enough for me to actually pet her.

Adding a picture to pep things up.

I even got to run by a “Do Not Enter” sign.  The sign was looking more beat-up than it does here.  The painted arrow on the ground is faded as well. I guess I am more aged myself, but I’m still moving.

Pet a Pup, Run in Rain, Blog

How about a Saturday Running Commentary Post?  For one thing, I went running, which kind of surprised me.  I don’t like to run in the rain.  I thought I would peek out and if it had stopped raining, I would run.  If it was still raining…

Regular readers know I usually do enter.

Full disclosure:  I did not run past this particular Do Not Enter sign this morning, although it is one I regularly run by.  I just felt that this morning several signs were pointing me away from running, but silly me ran anyways.  I suppose I have a contrarian disposition.

Maybe I am not so silly, though, because the first thing I encountered was a delightful puppy named Pugsley, who lives in my neighborhood.  I dashed across the street to pet him and to greet his person.  He told me what kind of dog Pugsley is, but I forgot.  He is tiny and furry and oh, so friendly!  He jumped up and wiggled and showed me all kinds of love as I petted him.

“He’s so friendly!”  I said.  “Well, gotta run!”

“I support that!” Pugsley’s person said (if I ever asked his name, I have forgotten that, too).  “Stay warm!”

“You too!”

Of course I couldn’t stay real warm, and I certainly couldn’t stay dry, but I could persevere and continue to run.  I even made it up one pretty good hill out Main Street.  Imagine my chagrin when I got to the top of the hill and saw a One Way sign pointing in the direction I was going!  I’ll have to try going the other way next time.

The rain wasn’t really too downpourish, and it was not freezing rain, so I had that going for me.  I did not encounter any more dogs, but I felt it was an OK run.  And now I have made what I hope is an OK blog post about it.  At least it is a Saturday post made on Saturday!

Run Before Murder

Remember Saturday Running Commentary?  I would get up on a Saturday morning, go for a run, then write a blog post about it.  I have recently re-started running AGAIN, and I would like to do a Saturday Running Commentary post.  For one reason, if I do not make my blog post this morning, there is every chance I will not get to it later.  I do not want to break my streak!  Um, that is, my streak of blogging. I have never actually been streaking; sorry if that gave you an unfortunate mental image.

When I woke up this morning, I thought I would not run.  I must recruit my energies for Deadly Night Life, the murder mystery being presented at Salisbury Grange this afternoon.  However, after drinking some coffee and contemplating my day, I decided to go.  It could be a short run.  It will never be a fast run.  I could do this.

I thought I would run the way I walked to the Elk Lodge on Thursday.  It was an indirect route, amounting to about a half a mile.  Then I could keep going till it was a mile.  At least I would go a mile.  Maybe more.  Maybe 20 minutes.  No pressure.  Up to German Street and turn right.  I went as far as the path over what used to be a hydraulic canal, one of my favorite places to walk or run.

The spots are a little faded now.

I did not “Step, “March,” “Tiptoe,” etc. as advised by the printing at each painting.  I may do so if I ever walk the path with my great niece and nephew.  I continued to go through the County Office Building parking lot, so I could defy a couple of Do Not Enter signs.  Regular readers know how I love to do that.

Running past the Elks Lodge (which I cannot find a photo of in my Media Library, nor can I find a Do Not Enter sign), I saw a lady walking a cute dog.  I called good morning and asked if I could pet her dog.  The poocher was certainly eager to be petted.  The lady said it was a good reason to take a little break from a jog.

“It encourages me to keep going,” I told her.  We wished each other a nice day and moved on.  It is always a good run when I get to pet a dog.

I continued past my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners, going close to the 1834 Jail, so Chester Gilette could look out the window at me.

I thank whoever put him in the window!

I ended up running for 20 minutes.  I can’t tell you how much over a mile it was, because my Garmin is across the room from me, and I am recruiting my energies.  I have a murder mystery today, you know!

Late Post-Liverpool Post

I am still lame as the weekend wears on, making my Saturday blog post late Sunday morning.  I am back home from my sojourn in Liverpool and feeling quite tired.  I went for a run both mornings I was there and got lost both times.  This is as usual when I visit my sister Diane.  I swear the streets in the area where she lives were laid out based on a plate of spaghetti.  I set out to do 20-minute runs and ran for 31 minutes on Saturday and an hour today!

On the brighter side, on today’s run I petted two dogs and twice got directions from nice people (I got confused following the first set of directions, what a surprise).  I also felt pleased that my body stood up to the abuse.  I walked but did not run every day since last weekend.  So I guess I haven’t lost what fitness I gained training for the Boilermaker 15K.

Not the sneakers I ran in.

I took this picture after the run, a shower, and putting on party clothes.  I did not just sit around;  I helped get ready for my niece Camille’s graduation party, the occasion for my visit.  It was a wonderful party.  I saw members of my family, some of Diane’s in-laws, and a number of friends, including some new ones.

And now I am home and wishing I had made it to the grocery store last week.  However, I cannot do everything.  At least I finally made my Saturday blog post.

I Guess I’m on the Cusp

It seems I am no longer a daily blogger.  I do not like that.  I like to be a daily blogger.  With that in mind, I am sitting at my dining-room-table-top on Friday morning, hoping to make a Throwback Thursday post.  Then later today I can make a Lame Post Friday post, and go on from there.  I have a recent history of dropping the ball on weekends, so we shall see.  A little suspense adds interest to my week.

So pretty!

I throw back to November 2016 and a lovely bouquet sent to me by my husband, Steve.  He recently sent me another bouquet, but I have neither my cell phone nor my Tablet handy to take a picture, and anyways, that would not be much of a throwback, being just earlier this week.  Then again, some people feel 2016 is not so long ago either.  I cannot deal with these deep questions so early in the morning.

So sweet!

Another picture from 2016:  our sweet, dearly missed poocher, Spunky.  I was watching the National Dog Show yesterday and simply longing for another dog of my own.

Time to be merry!

Let me take a break from melancholy with a Christmas muppet picture.  I feel Thanksgiving is a fitting start to the Christmas season, with Santa Claus anchoring the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.  One of my favorite Christmas movies, Miracle on 34th Street, begins on Thanksgiving.  I happened to catch that movie recently.  I am ready to feel Christmasy, are you?

I hope everybody had a lovely Thanksgiving, by the way.   As for this blog post, I am going to bill it as a Non-Sequitur Thursday, seeing as I am having Throwback Thursday on Friday morning, and I cannot decide between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

I Would Feel Spunky If I Could Do Shakespeare Again

Last night, I told myself all I needed to do was make a Throwback Thursday Post. How hard could that be, I argued. Choose a couple of pictures, peck in a few words… that is, on my Tablet. Then I thought about how finicky my Tablet has been concerning my WordPress Media Library, and I was so tired anyways… So here I am, prior to five Friday morning, on my still-hanging-by-a-thread laptop, ten-finger typing, and waiting for coffee.

I must admit, I am enjoying the ten finger typing, and the coffee just showed up (Steve really is a very satisfactory husband). Let us see what I can do with the Media Library.

Adorable, yes?

I looked at March 2017 (the laptop behaving beautifully for the moment) and found this sweet picture of our dearly missed pooch, Spunky. I SO miss having a dog! My ambition is to get my house cleaned up and repaired so we can adopt another doggy friend. It is difficult as tired as I am these days, but I encourage myself to work a little at a time.

I MISS this!

I was looking for another canine photograph, but I can rarely resist a Theatre Throwback. This was an early rehearsal for The Tempest, as presented by LiFT, Little Falls Theatre Company in 2017. Too long ago! A few of us were meeting in early 2020, scheming how to bring Shakespeare back to Little Falls, but, alas, COVID intervened.

There’s no people like show people!

Here is a picture of one of our meetings, held at Meeples Mug House, which is also sadly departed (totally understood the proprietors’ reasons, but still sad).

Well, that was pretty easy, getting over 250 words (I may be over 300 by the end of this paragraph!). My headline suggested itself after I found the second picture. Does jumping subjects like this make this also a Non-Sequitur Thursday post? Discuss amongst yourselves.

(Yes, over 300 words. Teehee)
