A Brain With No Beer?

I really wanted to make today’s blog post about beer.  Beer Belly Bob’s was having a tasting, and I need to get more beer anyways.  I always feel more secure when I have beer in the fridge, even now that I rarely drink it.  Unfortunately, the scheduled tasting was cancelled.  I’ll have to get over there and purchase some beer for the fridge, but I just didn’t have enough oomph to leave the house again tonight.

Do I have enough oomph to make a blog post? The answer has to be yes, of course.  It helps that today is Lame Post Friday.

Only I don’t have a blu-ray.

Yes, we are watching The Brain That Wouldn’t Die (1962), which I believe I referenced in a blog post earlier this week.  It is one of my favorite cheesy movies.  I need more cheesy movie watching in my life.

That reminds me of a few guys I used to date.

I just thought I’d throw in a picture of the monster from that movie, perhaps to distract from the fact that this is a particularly lame Friday post.

I was just looking all through the pictures on Beer Belly Bob’s Facebook page, but I did not see any that would particularly enhance today’s post.  What to do?  Admit I am lame and move on?  Or search obsessively for a photo that fits?  Or just throw in a picture I like, hit publish and get back to enjoying my Friday?  I think you know what I am going to pick.

“What are you bothering me for?”

You just knew I was going to pick Nosferatu, didn’t you? Happy Friday, everyone.

Tasting and Typing on Lame Post Friday

I was all set to make my Friday Lame Post when Steven said, “Write about our tastings!”  So I will.

Earlier today, I thought we were into the relaxing portion of the day (full disclosure: we have been pretty relaxed all week since I’ve been off work).  I knew there was a wine tasting at Valley Wine and Liquor in Herkimer, but I don’t have to go to every possible wine tasting.  Then I saw on Facebook that Beer Belly Bob was having a beer tasting.  I don’t have to go to every possible beer tasting either, but all of a sudden, going to two tastings sounded like a fun thing to do!  I put my jewelry (and my bra) (please do NOT tell me TMI!) back on and off we went.

The wine tasting only featured two wines:  Harken Chardonnay and Exitus, a red blend.  The lady pouring (I stupidly did not ask her name) said the Chardonnay was buttery but not too oaky.  I’m not nuts about buttery Chardonnays, but I gave it a try.  I felt it was distinctive, not too buttery, but I wasn’t nuts about it.  The Exitus, though, was yummy.  It was Bourbon barrel aged so had a higher alcohol content, 16 percent.  Yikes!  Well, just a small taste was fine.  We purchased a bottle, which we will save for a special occasion.

On to Route 51 Beer Belly Bob’s Discount Beverage Center in Ilion!  I mention as an aside: this was our second trip to Ilion for booze.  Earlier we went to Ilion Wine and Spirits for a bottle of Barefoot Pinot Noir, one of my favorites.  One reason we like Ilion Wine and Spirits is that they are big supporters of Ilion Little Theatre.  All kinds of local shout-outs today!

Adirondack Brewery was offering samples today.  A few people were already enjoying tastes.  I right away grabbed a cracker and some Original Herkimer Cheese Spicy Tomato Chutter, which was on the bar.  I loves me some Original Herkimer Cheese!

Stacy (I remembered to ask her name) poured us some Hefeweizer.  She was very good at keeping track of who had tasted what, pouring for several people at once as she was.  We liked the Hefeweizer as well as the Bobcat Pilsner we tried next.  Those were our favorites, although we also tried and liked Bear Naked Amber, Tangerine Dream Dirty Pale Ale, Wildest Dreams, and Bear Wizz Root Beer.  I took detailed notes about each of these.  At least, I took notes.  But I guess it is still Lame Post Friday, because I’m not going to go on about them.

We purchased a mixed 12-pack, because that was the only way our two favorites were available.  I considered purchasing some of the root beer, because I thought it would make a great float with chocolate ice cream, but regular beer won.  I’ll keep the Bear Wizz in mind for future purchases.

We are now back home. I fixed a quick dinner, and we are definitely back to the relaxing portion of the evening.  Happy Friday, everyone.

Several Shout-outs on a Scattered Saturday

Once again I pause in my gyrations to make a Scattered Saturday post.  Steven and I are waiting for some people to come over tonight.  It is a Thanks for the Mayhem party for people who participated in our murder mysteries in the past couple of years.  Oh dear, I hope I did not neglect to invite somebody who reads my blog.  I do not have the most reliable memory, and I have done quite a few murder mysteries.  Anyways, I have to have another party, because a lot of people can’t make it tonight.

I began my morning earlier than expected on a Saturday, but that was OK, because I had gone to bed earlier with a stomach ache on Friday (perhaps you read my blog post about it).  My stomach felt better, so I had some coffee and listened to the rain fall.  I do not usually go running in the rain.  And right after the rain, there a lot of puddles I do not necessarily enjoy running through.  However, when the rain stopped, I ran anyways and just did not worry about the puddles.  I wore an older pair of running shoes.

Back home, I wrote a few post cards.  I was delighted to have some new ones to send.  My Mom and Dad went on a bus trip with their church and picked me up a bunch.  I rarely travel myself, but I am fortunate to have family and friends that do.  By now it was raining again, making a walk to the post office ineligible.  That was all right, though, because Steven and I had several errands to run.

After a stop by the post office, we went to Cash for Cans on South Washington Street in Herkimer, NY (where we live, in case you didn’t know) and redeemed a LOT of cans and bottles.  Then we went to AmeriCU Credit Union to deposit a check (we like credit unions), then to Hannaford for groceries and party munchies.  Back home, we cleaned industriously, although my coffee table is still quite the mess.  Steven nicely said we would call it a Work in Progress and it could be a topic of conversation. I do like to entertain my guests.

Around 11:30 we went to Route 51 Beer Belly Bob’s Discount Beverage Center in Ilion, to taste and purchase beer.  Brown’s Brewing Company of Troy, NY was there.  We had a great time and bought some yummy beer.  I want to do a whole blog post about it. I also plan to return to Beer Belly Bob’s when Brown’s is back sometime.  Oh, as well as returning when I run out of the beer I bought.  Beer Belly Bob’s is where I get my beer!

Since we also drink wine, we made a quick stop at Ilion Wine and Spirits for a bottle of Barefoot Pinot Noir.  I had a craving for some Barefoot Pinot Noir.  I will be delighted to open it in a few hours (oh, do I have to wait a few hours?  Maybe I can start sipping a little early).

Wow, I did a lot.  I haven’t even talked about the fixing, mixing, and chopping I have done so far.  I will just mention that I enjoyed a cup of iced coffee flavored with just a touch of Mohawk Valley Fire Moonshine from DikinDurt Distillery of Herkimer.  Just to give another shout-out.

So I think this has been a pretty good Scattered Saturday post (or do I flatter myself?).  Now I’ve got to get back to finishing my fixings. I do love to entertain.  Happy Saturday, everyone.

Getting a Line on Some Beer

I did one traditional Father’s Day thing on Sunday:  I bought my Dad beer.  This gave me the opportunity to go to a new business in Ilion, Route 51 Beer Belly Bob’s Discount Beverage Center.  I think Beer Belly Bob is cool.

One reason I went is, I knew Beer Belly Bob carries Labatt’s Ice, which I know my Dad likes, and I like too.  I know, being Mohawk Valley Girl, as I am, it would have been nice to bring Dad something brewed locally, but I don’t know of anything Dad likes of that nature.  We’ll have to go tasting together sometime and see if we can’t find something.

I found the Labatt’s Ice in the cooler, apparently only available in a 30-pack.  Well, I could help Dad drink it.  I’m helpful that way.  It was a little heavy for me to carry, but this was a Father’s Day present. I persevered.

There was a line at the register. It was not a long one, but seemed so because I was carrying a 30-pack.  I set it on the floor.  Waiting in line also gave me a chance to look at the signs advertising upcoming beer tastings.  They have a very nice tasting room.  Regular readers know I love to taste.   Sam Adams on June 22, Founders Brewing and Ithaca Brewery on June 23, both 5 to 7 p.m.  Yay, I love Sam Adams!  I feel so patriotic when I drink it.

While moving my beer as the line moved, I dropped my car keys and didn’t even notice (and I had NOT had any beer yet!). The lady in line ahead of me nicely picked them up for me.  She asked me if they sold ice.

“I don’t know, ” I said, looking around for a machine.  Then I saw a sign in the window.  It was facing out, but I can read backwards.  “Oh, yes, there’s a sign: ‘We sell ice.'”

As they checked out, I remarked on how much beer the lady and her husband had and said I might follow them home, which is what I often say to people I see carrying beer (full disclosure:  I have never actually followed anybody home).  They said they had some very thirsty people at their house.  When the clerk handed the man the key to the ice machine, he said, “Oh, you’re giving me the keys to the car!”

I said, “Sure, you can take the car, because you haven’t drunk all this beer yet.”

I like to get into conversations with people in check-out lines.  It adds interest to my shopping expeditions.

Beer Belly Bob’s is located at 70 Otsego St., Ilion, NY, phone number 315-895-0936. They are open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.  You can Like them on Facebook, which also lists their beer tastings.  See you there!

Does Beer Cure Headaches?

On the brighter side, I haven’t had a headache in a long time.

On the dimmer side, now I don’t want to make a blog post where all I do is whine about how I have a headache.

This is simply dreadful.  I want to make my blog post before going to a beer tasting at Beer Belly Bob’s in Ilion, and this damn headache won’t go away, dammit.  Ah, I see by their Facebook page, the full name of the business is Route 51 Beer Belly Bob’s Discount Beverage Center.  They recently opened.  A work friend of mine is a close personal friend of Bob.  I love small town living.

I hurried home today so I would have time to go running AND get ready to go to the beer tasting.  I got my run done.  Not too long, definitely not very fast, no hills, but, hey, one does what one can.  At least I ran.  I even stretched when I got done, which I neglected to do yesterday (don’t judge).  When I went to take my shower, I wished once again that I had one of those old lady shower chairs so I could sit down while I washed.  Oh yes, I could have taken a bath, but then I would have had to (1) wait while the tub filled and (2) get up out of the tub when I had finished.  Could I fight gravity to that extent?  I did not try.

Once clean, I had to figure out a cute outfit to wear.  No, I don’t HAVE to look cute (cue unkind remarks about how I can’t look very cute anyways).  I just like to.  For one reason, my husband, Steven, is also going to the beer tasting.  I think it is nice to look cute for your husband of over 26 years.  I finally came up with something not too contemptible.  I had been picturing something kind of sophisticated, perhaps featuring a silk jacket.  Then I remembered I was going to taste beer.  I went for an oversized men’s polo shirt and yellow capri pants.  I found my earring made from a Black Label beer can (I only have one, because I lost the other, but that’s OK, because I almost never wear matching earrings).  I put it in the ear with one hole.  In the ear with two holes, I put dangly fresh-water pearls and a silver-and-gold hoop.

I don’t know why I am becoming so detailed, but I just realized I am over 400 words.  For starting with the idea that I could not post anything because of that stupid headache (which I still have, by the way), I think that is pretty good, especially for Lame Post Friday.  Ooh, and my date should be here any minute.  Happy Friday, everyone.
