Family, Fun and Forehead

Sometimes Mohawk Valley adventures render you too tired to write about them.  For me this is especially true when I spend any amount of time in direct, hot sunlight.  I have some sort of sun sensitivity.  And I’m a big, fat baby.  Don’t judge.

Speaking of big, fat babies, Steven and I saw our delightful great-nephew, Shepherd today.   Well,  he’s not exactly big and fat, and he is more toddler than baby, but he is nine months old and he has sweet, chubby feet.  Everybody loves him, with good reason.

We met him and his family at church, then met up with some other family members and drove to Fly Creek Cider Mill.  I have written numerous times about Fly Creek Cider Mill, but it is always worth another visit and shout-out.  My father and I made sure we tried every sample offered, although he eschewed the fudge and the alcoholic beverages (wine, hard cider and today there was gin and vodka).  In case anyone is shaking his or her head at my lushiness, I did not try ALL the alcoholic beverages offered.  Two wines, one cider and some gin, and it was eetsy-beetsy tastes of each.  Why am I justifying myself to you?  That’s a bad sign too, isn’t it?  Oh dear.

The highlight of the visit was showing Shepherd the ducks, geese and chickens.  He loved them.  He couldn’t get the hang of throwing them corn, but he enjoyed watching them gobble down the corn we threw them.  This was the part I spent out in direct sunlight. I even took off my crazy old lady hat for part of it, because I put it on Shepherd’s head.  Must protect the bambino, after all.

After our fun visit, we went for some food at Jerry’s Place, which I have also written about before.  I got one of the chocolate shakes in a mason jar this time.  Yum!  Perhaps tomorrow I can finally begin to do something about my big fat butt.

Before, after and during our adventures, we enjoyed beautiful drives through some of the best scenery I’ve ever seen.  Up hills where you can see for miles over farmland, forests and mountains.  Down into valleys near lovely lakes and rivers. I positively must get some kind of camera or device whereby I can post pictures.  In the meantime, I’m afraid you’ll just have to use your imagination.

In conclusion, this really is a Wrist to Forehead Sunday, because I feel some distress over the fact that I cannot do justice to today’s adventures.  Tomorrow I plunge back into the whirlpool of overtime, play rehearsals and my new diet and exercise program.  And a few other projects I have in mind.  Will I have the wherewithal to take my wrist off my forehead and write about them?  We’ll see.  Once again, a little suspense adds interest to the blog.

Lame Brained and Not Really Friday

So there I was, logging on to WordPress to finally make my Lame Post Friday blog post for the week.  Why, oh why does Reader pop up first?  I just can’t help but scroll down and read a few.  Sometimes I resist the urge, then I feel guilty for ignoring my fellow bloggers.  We all like to be read, that’s why we do this.  At least, it is one reason (oh, don’t sit there saying in that superior tone of voice, “I blog for ME!  I don’t care if NOBODY reads it!”  If that was the case, you’d just write a diary).

Where was I?  Ah yes, making my blog post and I think I went a little bit long on the first paragraph, but you’ll have that sometimes.  Let’s make the second paragraph shorter, shall we?

It isn’t even really a real Friday for me, because I work tomorrow.  I am quite happy to be doing so.  For one reason, I’ve already spent the money (don’t judge).  For another reason, the DARE 5K is tomorrow.  I have not kept up my training since the Boilermaker 15K so am unable to participate.  The Kids’ Fun Run goes right by my house.  The 5K goes by the end of my street.  It is not easy to avoid, and I will feel bad to see all those people running without me.

As I sit in my living room typing this, I can hear thunder outside.  Herkimer County is under a severe thunderstorm warning for the next 40 to 45 minutes or so.  I do love a good thunderstorm.  Of course, it would be a problem if we lost power, but I’ll just keep the good thought and enjoy the rumble.

Another thing for me to enjoy is an episode of Snapped on digital cable.  Regular readers may recall that this is one of my favorite guilty pleasures. I usually watch it on Sundays (sometimes all day), but I have found another channel that shows it on Fridays.

And now I am beginning to think I am having a Non-Sequitur Friday.  That’s not right!  It’s Non-Sequitur Thursday, and I had that yesterday!  Sorry, folks.  I guess it’s my brain on overtime.  Hope to see you all on Saturday.  AFTER I get done work.

I Want My Pork Chop

The weather in the Mohawk Valley has taken a turn towards perfect.  As I type this into our little Acer, I am sitting on our deck, enjoying a lovely breeze.  The two trees in our backyard give enough shade to keep me cool and to keep the sun from really bothering my eyes.  The sunshine is bright enough to make everything in your yard look pretty, and that’s a pretty good trick, since I have not done much yardwork or gardening this season.

My container garden is still in bloom.  Of course some plants have done better than others, but I am seeing bright purple and yellow blooms as well as a enough basil for at least one more good batch of pesto.

In short, life is good.

If only I could write, life would be perfect.  I spent a good portion of the day thinking about my novel (I reiterate that I have the sort of job where one can think about other things and still be productive).  I tried to frame things into “Because THIS then THIS,” with no notable success.  What terrible news.  Fiction MUST have a progression, cause and effect, one thing leads to another.  Otherwise, why would the reader turn the page?

But one must persevere.  I vowed I would finish this novel.  I must either come up with an outline that fits what I have written thus far, and continue to write, or I must start all over again.  This is a daunting proposition, but one which I am prepared to face.

In the meantime, I am greatly enjoying my time sitting out on the deck while my beloved husband cooks supper.

Full disclosure:  Steven finished cooking when I has halfway through the second sentence of the first paragraph.  I stopped composing to eat then continued on,  leaving the headline I had written first, in order to make this Non-Sequitur Thursday.  I hope this blog post meets with your approval.

Salvatore’s: The Perfect Medication

The reason people self-medicate with food is that it almost always works, at least in the short term.  I’m actually not self-medicating with food right now, but I thought I’d lead with that as a semi-profound, arguable statement (but I hope nobody argues with me; I always lose arguments).  In fact, I am merely giving another shout-out to Salvatore’s Pizzeria and Restaurant in Herkimer, NY.

We really have been pretty good about not sending out for food lately.  We must fund our money, and I must watch my caloric intake.  However, sometimes you just need to treat yourself.  It is really a practical move as well.  We are getting garlic pizza and antipasto salad, and we will certainly have leftovers.  I can eat leftover pizza for breakfast and bring leftover salad for lunch.  What could be better?

Sometimes we go out to Salvatore’s and sit in their gracious dining room.  I do like to go out to eat.  However, one cannot go out to eat barefoot and bra-less, as I currently am (I shall not apologize if that has given you an unfortunate mental image, just get over yourself).

I have given shout-outs to Salvatore’s before, because the food is delicious and the service prompt.  I guess I don’t have a whole lot new to say about them.  However, it is Monday and I am tired. I’ll just hope the opening statement about self-medication adds enough interest to call this a post.  I hope my pizza gets here soon.  Happy Monday, everybody.

Salvatore’s is located at 650 1/2 W. German St., Herkimer,  315-866-2600.  For more information you can visit their website at http://www.salvatores-herkimer.com/.

Severed Heads, Murder Television and Foolish Blog Posts

Did anybody not expect a Wrist to Forehead Sunday post today?  Nonsense, of course you did.  Perhaps, like me, you were hoping for something better or at least different, but any length of acquaintance with me will show that I am continual proof of the rule: shit happens.

I am feeling marginally better from my sinus infection.  I have a new cord for my Acer and am once again typing with two hands.  Things are definitely looking up.

I’ve been researching my role for the play Roxy by watching television.  That is, I’ve been using that as an excuse.  Last night we saw Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte, which involves a guy getting his head chopped off.  OK, that really has very little to do with the play.  For one reason, the movie is a mystery while in the play it is quite well known whodunit (me).  Still, Bette Davis.  I couldn’t help myself.

Today, as I usually do on Sundays, I am watching Snapped on digital cable.  Some of those are about  wives who kill abusive husbands.  I caught the tail end of one where she killed him with an axe, then tried to hide the body and pretend it never happened.  The parallels were striking!  If only I had seen the entire episode.  Oh, OK, it was a re-run, and I’ve seen it at least a couple of times before.  I may even have seen another true crime show about the case.  I watch a lot of murder television.

Earlier this weekend I stopped by Ilion Wine and Spirits to purchase a bottle of wine.  One of the owners greeted me and asked how the blog was going.  I was forced to confess that I have twice tried to write a post about a wine tasting they recently hosted.  I must, I positively must finish that post and get it published.

As I begin my week, I hope once again to write good blog posts, not foolish ones.  But we’ll see what happens.  I think some people are entertained by my foolishness.  Sometimes I even entertain myself.  I hope you’re all having an enjoyable Sunday.

Lame Excuse for a Blog Post

It is Lame Post Friday and I will be perfectly honest:  I want to finish this blog post so I can sit on the couch, crochet, and watch Snapped on digital cable.  I figured once I started typing in words I would enjoy myself, and once again, I was right.

I went to the doctor this morning because of that blasted lightheadedness I was whining about  yesterday.  She said it was probably a sinus infection and prescribed antibiotics, so presumably help is on the way.  Speaking of relief, my Saturday overtime got cancelled, so it really, truly is Friday for me.

While I was in my break area at work, I looked out the window at an Ilion neighborhood.  I saw the nice dog I sometimes see.  I don’t know for a fact that the dog is nice, but I consider them all nice until proven otherwise.  As I looked at him, he stood up and looked down the street, tail wagging.  Unfortunately, my break ended before I could see what was making him so happy.

Anyways, that is my random observation for the day.  Regular readers will remember that Lame Post Friday is my traditional space for random observations and half-baked philosophy.  Do I have any half-baked philosophy to round out the post?  Let me see…

Is being lightheaded a good excuse for a bad blog post?  And if it is, how do my other lame excuses compare?  Are there many or even any good excuses for bad blog posts?  Am I not my own worst critic in calling them bad blog post?  Are we not all very often our own worst critics?

Discuss amongst yourselves.  I have an afghan to crochet and cable television to watch.  Happy Friday, folks.

But It’s Only the First Week of August!!!

Yes, it is a three exclamation point situation, and it is not a diatribe about back to school ads. My fall allergies have kicked in.

In past years, fall allergies have involved stuffy  and/or runny nose, itchy eyes, sinus headache, you know, the usual stuff. I’ve taken the usual over the counter remedies with occasional forays into prescription territory. I’ve gone though whole boxes of tissues in a single afternoon.  I’ve irrigated and neti-potted.  I’ve drunk gallons of green tea with local honey (not all at once, like the tissues).

I confess, there has always been a stirring of joy with the first sinus twinge, because it means fall is here.  I love fall.  Well, my problems with my sinusy twinges this year are twofold.

To begin with:  it’s not fall.  Play all the back-to-school ads you want, lament that summer is half over, even start school if you are in one of those states, IT’S STILL NOT FALL YET!  Even the unofficial start of fall (Labor Day) is a month away.  Real fall is almost three weeks after that, and when (or if) we’ll get the pleasant fall weather is anybody’s guess.

The second fold of my problem is these are not the allergy problems I am used to.  What I’m used to is getting the above listed, normal allergy symptoms.  When the symptoms become too bothersome, I take something for it, which usually dopes me up.  It becomes almost a mathematical problem:  how much allergy discomfort makes it worth the discomfort of being horribly lightheaded?  Sometimes the answer changes.  It adds a little interest to my day.

Well, it seems now the main symptom is to be horribly lightheaded.  What the hell, body?

Someone will argue (and you know who you are) that it is really a time, money, and mathematical equation saver.  After all, I’m skipping right over the usual symptoms and going right to the lightheaded part. I suppose, too, I could be pleased that my body decides to switch things up now that I’m into my 50s.  After all, it proves that you can so teach an old dog new tricks.

In any case, I’m feeling too lightheaded to write a real blog post, and I thought this would make a decent Non-Sequitur Thursday post.  Fall allergies when it isn’t really fall.  Having the last step first in the allergy discomfort equation.  Sounds pretty non-sequential to me.  Then again, I am lightheaded.  Hope you’re all having a lovely Thursday.

No Worry Wednesday

This is my new feature, to replace Wuss-out Wednesday.  I like it.

Astute readers (have I any other kind?) probably read yesterday’s post and expected another ridiculous post today.  Well, I AM still trying to learn my lines for Roxy.  In fact, I did write something today, but it wasn’t a blog post, and I didn’t finish it.  Still, words on paper, that’s a good thing, right?

Logging onto WordPress.com this evening (later than expected once again; gotta love overtime), I saw that I had ten Likes and one comment on yesterday’s foolishness.  In the course of replying to the comment, No Worry Wednesday was born, so thank you to fellow blogger Mark Bialczak.

In order that my entire post not be an announcement of a new day for me, I will share you a story about yesterday’s rehearsal.

In case you didn’t know, Roxy is about Roxalana Druse, who murdered her husband in the Town of Warren, and subsequently was tried and hanged for it in Herkimer, NY.  It is a true story.  I play Roxy.  I shoot my husband and chop his head off with an ax (I didn’t need to include a spoiler alert for that; in addition to being a well-known bit of local history, the characters talk about it in the first scene).  In my defense, my husband is, to quote the play, a “goddam lousy son of a bitch.”

Art Wilks, the man playing my husband is a very good actor.  He is physically imposing and has a deep, gravelly voice.  When in character, he is mean and scary.  We were doing the scene in which I kill him.  He had just called me a goddam bitch and threatened to split my skull open with an ax.  It was a tense moment, and Art probably should have turned his cell phone off.

Art’s ring tone was a sweet, tinkly, music-box sounding tune.  It was soft, it was pleasant.  I tried not to break character, and if Art was perhaps ten percent less of a good actor, I might have made it.  As it was, the contrast was too much for me.  Along with everybody else, I cracked up laughing.

Perhaps in reaction to the tension of the scene, I laughed harder than I have laughed in years.  I laughed so hard I had to walk away.  I laughed so hard I gasped for breath.  I laughed and laughed and laughed.  I’m still chuckling just remembering.

I hope I have conveyed how humorous it was. However, in the spirit of the day, I shall not worry if I have not.  If anything has ever happened to you that made you laugh that hard, please share it in the comments.  I like to laugh.

Tired from Having a Bad Attitude

So yesterday I was doing really well.  I wrote a real blog post AND I went running.  I thought, this is awesome, because I can write a running commentary for Tuesday’s post.

And then Tuesday happened.

Nothing really bad happened, but I got a really bad attitude nonetheless.  I did not get any writing done, because I was studying my lines for Roxy, the play I am in (which I believe I have mentioned before).  Full disclosure:  I also worked on a few cryptogram puzzles.  I thought it would make my mind more supple.  Did it work?  Well, who can tell how much MORE un-supple my mind would have been otherwise.  So difficult to have a control in these experiments.

So there I was, partway through my day and I knew it was Bad Attituesday.  A lot of other people at work had bad attitudes.  I didn’t worry about them and they didn’t worry about me.  Then I got home (an hour later than expected, by the way, but never mind THAT dull story) and tried to get all my stuff done before rehearsal.

Of course my most important chore of the evening was this blog post.  As I sat down to write it, my bad attitude had faded somewhat.   Unfortunately, it was not replaced by any notable ability to write anything decent.  I’m TIRED!  As I struggle to stay awake enough to write some semblance of a blog post, I worry how I will stay alert for rehearsal.  Oh, I’m afraid this is another Tired Tuesday.

Hey, I just realized something:  on Mondays I have either Middle-aged Musings Monday or Mental Meanderings Monday.  Tuesdays can be either Tired Tuesday or Bad Attituesday.  How clever I have become at thinking up things to write other than a regular blog post.  I’ll have to see what I can do about that.

Just as soon as I learn all my lines for that play.

News Flash! As I was adding the categories for this post, I noticed Tasty Tuesday.  I don’t remember having anything called Tasty Tuesday!  What a brilliant idea!  Next Tuesday I will be sure to eat something delicious, and that is what I will write about.

Slack Sunday

The weather continues hot, I continue tired, and the blog posts continue foolish.

Welcome to Wrist to Forehead Sunday!

I suppose you all think I’m hungover from partying too heartily last night.  I’m actually mostly tired.  My head doesn’t hurt, my stomach’s not upset.  I just can’t seem to write.  This has been an ongoing problem with me, as I believe my foolish  blog posts have shown.

Earlier in the week, I had some glimmers of hope when  I wrote a whole other page on a post I could not complete previously.  I think it’s going to be a really good post.  If I can ever finish it.  I have a draft saved of a post I started to write week before last.  I tried to finish that one, too.  I couldn’t do it, because I can’t find a way to describe the restaurant it was about, and it just seemed wrong to write the post without it.  On Thursday, Steven and I went for dinner at Crazy Otto’s Empire Diner.  Surely that should be a bloggable activity.  Yet, I felt I could not think of anything new to say about Crazy Otto’s.

Writing isn’t the only thing I have been slacking on.  I also have not been running.  Shall I blame the weather for that too?  No doubt it is a factor.  However, other people manage to run. I daresay I could too.

So here is my ambition:  I will write a real blog post tomorrow, and I will go running after work. One minor caveat:  if we finally get the thunderstorms they have been promising us, I will run in place on the mini-tramp.  I’m going to hit Publish on this and just put it out there.  This is Mohawk Valley Girl, turning over a new leaf.

But today I am still going to slack.
