Make Tea and a Blog Post and Call Me in the Morning

It seems I last posted early Thursday morning.  It is now mid-afternoon on Monday, and I could use a cup of coffee.  Or something.

Pause while I acquire a caffeinated beverage.

I made tea, but I found the Dyn’s Cider Mill mug.  I thought I could just about manage a Monstrous Monday post and perhaps get into some better blog posts as the week wears on.  I am feeling exceptionally useless lately.  I suppose the solution to that is to do something useful as say, “There!  What about that!”  Well, I did a load of laundry earlier and tried to clean out a tote in which I had thrown a ridiculous collection of things.  Perhaps tea and a blog post will revive me.

Some chicks don’t dig skinny guys.

Here is a shot from House on Haunted Hill, which I re-watched recently. It is a perennial favorite.  I refer, of course, to the original, produced by William Castle and starring Vincent Price.

“Hang a shining star upon the highest bought!”

I thought I would throw in a more seasonal monster with the Abominable Snowman, affectionately known as Bumbles, from Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer.  I though he had lost all his teeth by the time he wanted to put the star on top of the tree.  Just another continuity gaffe.

OK, he can call me a ho.

And another seasonal monster.  I need to find a Santa hat to put on Elliott Ghoul, who stands in my dining room window.  I put one on the Ghost that acts as a living room light.

Perhaps over the next few days I will complete my meager Christmas decorations and take some pictures for the blog.  I know some regular readers are interested to see Bonita’s Yuletide garb.

Tired Post, Late Shout-out

Why am I always too tired to do my Tired Tuesday post on Tuesday?  Am I getting old or am I just unhealthy?  I know it is not that I am working too hard, alas.  But enough about me, how about a blog post?

Last week I finally drove to Dyn’s Cider Mill in Richfield Springs.  I was in search of popcorn.  They have the best popcorn!  Popcorn is an excellent source of fiber, I have read.  Of course, with the amount of butter and salt I put on it, I cannot consider it a health food.  Still, it goes great with the movies I like to watch.

I love this place!

It was a bright, sunny day, which can be a little difficult to drive in.  Luckily I have polarized prescription sunglasses, a relic of when I used to work in the eye care industry.  It would have been a prettier drive had I gone earlier in the fall, but I can’t do everything (or even many things) in a timely fashion.  I still enjoyed the scenery and kept an eye out for any remaining bits of color (while still paying attention to traffic and bends in the road, I promise!)

I purchased two bags of popcorn and a half dozen donuts.  I know, donuts are far from a health food.  But they were freshly made and yummy!  Now that I have eaten them and they are gone, perhaps I can refrain from buying more and can begin a more healthy eating style.  No promises.

Dyn’s Cider Mill is located at 7915 NY-28, Richfield Springs, NY, phone number 315-858-2078.  You can find out more on their Facebook page.

Memories of Coffee and Steve

I guess I am back to late blog posts as I site here early Friday morning to make a Throwback Thursday post.  I am up early, having gotten up just prior to five o’clock.  I like to be up early; I just don’t like to get up early.  Right now I am not even sure I like to be up early, but at least I have got coffee.  Thank God for coffee!

No fan needed today, though.

Ah, I knew I had a picture of the mug I am currently using.  I wonder if I can get to Dyn’s Cider Mill before they close for the season.  Perhaps a drive there today would be in order (preview of coming attractions?)

I rarely look this perky and cute, no matter the time of day.

I noticed this picture before I found the Dyn’s mug and thought, why not do a coffee mug throwback?  My late, dearly missed husband Steve and I collected many mugs in our years together.  I keep thinking I need to get rid of a few, but getting rid of things is not my strong suit.  Additionally, I use all my coffee mugs.  Many people have one favorite they use all the time, but Steven and I liked to use them all in turn, often depending on season or mood.

A favorite line from a favorite movie.

This was a present from Steve.  He always got me the best presents.  Well now I am throwing back to the great romance of my life.  Perhaps I should close with a picture of Steve.  If I had one of him with a coffee mug, how nice that would be!

Steven with wine is almost as good.

Looking through my Media Library for pictures has reminded me about a lot of good memories I have made on Mohawk Valley adventures.  I should do more Throwback Thursday posts.  And have more Mohawk Valley adventures.  But first, more coffee.

I’m a Drama Queen on Slacker Saturday

Hello and welcome to a Slacker Saturday Post.  It is not that I have entirely slacked my Saturday away (these judgments are always subjective anyways), but I am pretty much going to slack my blog post.  Here’s a Freudian typo:  first I put “alack” instead of “slack.”  Wrist to Forehead Saturday?  I suppose so.  What do you want from a drama queen such as myself?

I’m everything a big bad wolf could want.

I was looking for a dramatic pose of me but decided to settle for a little bit of leg. This is my Ruby Van Rensselaer costume from Rubbed Out At Ruby’s, a murder mystery set in the 1920s.  I was rather pleased with that script.

I haven’t gotten a pumpkin yet this year.

I veer into a more seasonal picture with a shot from Pumpkin Junction in Sauquoit, NY, one of several autumn destinations I have not yet visited.  The list includes Cullen Pumpkin Farm and Dyn’s Cider Mill, among others.  Will I make it to any of them?  A little uncertainty adds suspense to my fall.

Here are some REAL drama queens!

I close with a real drama queen picture:  Fabulous and Fatal, a murder mystery involving a group calling ourselves Drama Queens Along the Mohawk.  That was another script I felt rather pleased with myself about.

And now I have blathered on for over 200 words, so I shall call it a blog post and drive on.  As always, I thank you for tuning in.

Tired, Late Post, But Popcorn!

I was too tired to make a blog post on Sunday and I am too brain dead to make one now.  I overslept, not by a huge amount, but apparently long enough to make a difference.  What the heck is the matter with me?  I’m so tired I am even saying “heck” because it is easier than fighting with autocorrect.

“Oh dear me!”

Once again, I throw in a picture to pep things up (autocorrect sucks, but sometimes the predictive text thingy is dead on).  This is from last July.  What a difference a year makes!  I had a husband.  I knew what to wear.  But it is no good to look back and repine.

Mmmm… Dyn’s Cider Mill

I look back to look ahead.  A trip to Dyn’s Cider Mill in Richfield Springs is in my future!  They have, bar none, the BEST popcorn.  Regular readers may recall that I pop it on the stove in oil and put real butter on it, as God intended (I say that as a joke; I do not pretend to really know the plans of the Almighty). Yum!

Dyn’s Cider Mill is located at 7915 NY-28, Richfield Springs,  NY, phone number 315-858-2078. They are open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Drive to Dyn’s

According to the weather reports on the morning news as well as my own observations, today was the pick day of the week to take a scenic ride. I had meant to spend the day cleaning the house but impulsively took a little time out to drive to Dyn’s Cider Mill in Richfield Springs, NY.

It was a lovely drive. I saw a lot of color but, alas, did not pull over and take any pictures. I took several at Dyn’s but could not tell how well they turned out, because the sun was so bright.

An evocative shot, with the door ajar, or do I flatter my photographic abilities?

When I pulled into the parking lot, a couple was enjoying what looked like an iced coffee (in a rare moment of circumspection, I did not ask) on the porch. When I went to take a picture of the front, two ladies were coming out. I waited till they were out of the frame.

A wider view.

I took two shots of the front and cannot decide which I like better, so I include both. Inside I bought Dyn’s Popcorn, which my main reason for going there, and maple syrup from Shaver-Hill Maple Farm in Harpersfield, NY. As a result of listening to too much Roger Miller as a child, I insist on calling it Maple Syrple.

At the counter, I got hot cider and a brownie to bring home for Steven. For myself I hesitated between an carrot cake cupcake or a pineapple bar, ultimately deciding on the latter. Yum!

My view as I ate my treat.

I was going to sit in my car to enjoy my treat, but the other couple was leaving as I came out, so I sat on the porch. I took one more picture before heading out.

Why have I not purchased a pumpkin yet?

I enjoyed the scenery on my ride home, too. I plan to pop a bowl of that popcorn to eat while watching Halloween movies one night soon. For more information on Dyn’s Cider Mill, you can visit their website, http://www.DynsCiderMill.net.

Don’t Be Blank! Plug a Local Business!

I guess my brain is still on Planet Arous,  because last night I had a terrible case of Writer’s Blank.  I don’t think I have mentioned this affliction in a while.  I stare at a blank computer screen or page (I tried both yesterday) and feel that my mind is similarly blank.  It is all very well to say, “Just write something, anything!”  Sometimes I can, and sometimes I can, that’s all.

It seems that this morning I can.  Let us not dwell on last night’s failure and complete a late post now.

Perhaps not the best angle, but you get the idea.

One help is that my lovely husband, Steven, brought me a cup of hot coffee.  Aaaaaahhhhh!  I took a picture, because he put it in a local mug.  We have not been to Dyn’s Cider Mill yet this year.  It is a charming place, with yummy cider and delicious donuts.  Additionally, they sell the BEST popcorn.  I wonder if I could persuade Steven to take a drive out there on Saturday.

Another good reason for heading in that direction:  we can go through Richfield Springs and stop at the Community Food Cooperative.  Just to plug another local business, and include another picture.

One of my new favorite places.

We Interrupt this Scattered Saturday to Make a Blog Post

I have been adventuring all afternoon after getting up at 3:30 a.m. and working overtime, with the result that I am too tired to compose a proper blog post (what a surprise, me not making a proper post.  Say it ain’t so!).  I will go with my usual Scattered Saturday method and give a brief overview of what we did.

We headed to Richfield Springs, NY to go to the Richfield Springs Historic Association Museum and Exhibit Hall.   We knew it was located at 134 W. Main St., but you know, Main Street in any town can be long.  We missed it the first time through but noticed a Farmer’s Market going on. We turned around and parked near that.  We figured it was a nice day for a stroll down Main Street in any case.

The Farmer’s Market had some interesting looking vendors.  I would have liked to purchase some cheese or produce, but since  I was not sure how long it would have to stay in my hot car, I refrained.  On down Main Street we went. Richfield Springs is a charming little village.  I pushed the button to get a Walk signal just about the time a fire engine was turning onto Main at that corner.

The fire truck was followed by roughly 8,764 motorcycles (no, I didn’t count them, but I thought that number was closer to the truth than “a bazillion,” which is what I started to type).  It must have been some official ride for something, although I never found out what.  Still, it was fun to see all the motorcycles.  I do love a parade.

When we finally found the museum, it still lacked ten minutes till it opened.  Luckily we had noticed a store a couple of doors down called “Finders Keepers.”  It was easy to kill some time wandering around looking at antiques, collectibles and, well, one man’s trash.  Then we were on to the museum.

I’ll write more about both Finders Keepers and the museum later.  For now I’ll just say we had a great time and both places are definitely worth another visit.  We walked back to the vehicle feeling that if that was all we did, it would not be a bad afternoon’s adventure.  As we reached our vehicle,  I noticed a lady walking down the sidewalk.

“Hey!  That’s Aunt Mary!”  I didn’t mention that my Aunt Mary and Uncle Ted live in Richfield Springs, but they do.  I had gotten their phone number from my mother thinking we might call and stop by at some point.  As it turned out, we would not have had a chance to do so, but Aunt Mary and I had a nice little chat on the sidewalk.

Our adventures continued and included Pail Shop Vineyards, Jerry’s Place, Dyn’s Cider Mill, Rustic Ridge Winery, and a whole lot of driving through windy, hilly country roads.   We had a wonderful afternoon.

And now I’m tired.  I’m having a cup of coffee, which may revive me somewhat.  One might think I could then write a better blog post, but I don’t think this one is contemptible. Or do I flatter myself?  No matter.  I’m over 500 words.  I’m going back to enjoying my weekend with my husband.  Happy Saturday, everyone.

Where I Like to Go for Popcorn

Astute readers may remember that a stop at Dyn’s Cider Mill formed part of Steven’s and my adventures last Friday. I’ve written about Dyn’s before, but I think it’s always appropriate to give a fun place another shout-out.

Dyn’s is located at 7915, Rt. 28, Richfield Springs, NY. It’s a scenic ride with views of water, mountains and farmland. The fall colors were past peak last Friday, but Steven and I saw patches of bright yellow, red and orange. We also scanned for Halloween decorations as we drove by people’s houses.

We walked into the large room and once again admired the country decor. One thing I definitely wanted was a cup of hot cider. The girl working there had to bring out more cups. She also brewed a fresh pot of coffee, which is almost always Steven’s beverage of choice. While the coffee brewed, I found my Dyn’s Popcorn, which was the real reason for the visit, and we debated which of the baked goods we would purchase. I moved my things out of the way of another customer.

“There’s popcorn?” she said, as I moved the bag.

“Really good popcorn,” I said. “I get some every year and love it. Then when it’s gone I make do with Jolly Time till I can get more Dyn’s.”

She got some popcorn, too. Steven and I decided on a half dozen apple cider donuts. I thought about purchasing some gourds to enhance our fall decor but decided against it. I pointed out to Steven that if we had felt like sitting and enjoying our beverages there, we could have used ceramic mugs. We could have played checkers on a rather large board on one of the tables. Perhaps on a future visit.

Dyn’s is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. They serve breakfast every Sunday from 7 a.m. to noon, and spaghetti and lasagna Wednesdays from noon to 7 p.m. For more information call 315-858-2078.

Big Plans, Small Post

I’m taking Friday off, so that makes Wednesday my Thursday, right? I bring the matter up, because I threatened yesterday (Tired Tuesday) to have a Wuss-out Wednesday today. In a desperate attempt to avoid that eventuality, I am sitting at work (before my shift starts, not while I’m on the clock, peanut gallery), scribbling in my notebook (the paper, spiral-bound kind; I’m a creature of the previous century), hoping to come up with something.

My husband has Friday off as well. We plan to spend at least part of the day having Mohawk Valley adventures. First we’ll head to Richfield Springs, NY and stop at Dyn’s Cider Mill. I want to get a bag of Dyn’s Popcorn. Regular readers may remember that I make my popcorn on the stove in a pot with oil and melt real butter to put on it. Dyn’s Popcorn is excellent for the purpose.

From there we thought we’d go to Fly Creek Cider Mill, another favorite stop of ours. Steven also suggested that either before Fly Creek or on our way home we stop at Butternut Barn Primitives, 427 Butternut Rd., Richfield Springs, a place we’ve never been to but have heard good things about.

While pondering our plan, I wondered about what other new places we could go. I remembered the Cooperstown Beverage Trail. I didn’t think we could do the whole trail, but perhaps we could check one or two of the stops on it. I thought I had seen a booklet about it at Gems Along the Mohawk in Herkimer.

I did not find information about the Beverage Trail, but in between the retail shops and the Waterfront Grille, there are many fliers about various attractions. I picked up a handful. Now we have lots of ideas!

So things are looking good for future blog posts. I hope to have several business and attractions to write about. In the meantime, I hope this preview of coming attractions will do for now.
