Nice Walk, But Little Spring in my Step

Monstrous Monday post on Tuesday, Tired Tuesday post on Wednesday, I’ve done it before and I will no doubt do it again.  I took a walk yesterday after work, thinking to do a Pedestrian Post with Pictures.  I took two but passed a few places I have pics of in my Media Library.  Let us see what I can come up with.

It was cold.  With Mother Nature’s macabre sense of humor, she gave us spring-like weather last week and winter weather on the first day of spring.  I dressed accordingly, wearing a lovely red cape/coat I picked up at a rummage sale but have rarely worn.  Searching for a hat worthy of it, I found one that had been crocheted for me by my dear friend Heather (I had sent her baby afghans for her beautiful newly-adopted twins) (oh, I also sent her a scarf I knitted; maybe the hat was in thanks for that) (and here I am bragging about stuff I send other people. What an ego!  What have I done for anyone lately?) (that last was a rhetoric question).

Where was I?  Ah yes, taking a walk.

Two venerable buildings.

I walked from my house to German Street, eventually turning down Main Street, where I passed my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners.  I continued down Main past the former Christ Episcopal Church, which I used to attend.  It is no longer a church, and the For Sale sign is gone.  I wonder what the future will bring for that lovely building.  The other building in the in the picture is the Herkimer County Courthouse.

There was a bank on the side of the road I was on.  I noted a Do Not Enter sign on the drive-thru. Regular readers know that I just love to enter when they say not to.  No cars were currently using the drive-thru, so I walked through it the wrong way.  I took a picture to commemorate the event.

I maintain my rebel cred.

The wind picked up as I continued my walk, so I cut things short.  I went through the park by Basloe Library (must make a trip there in the near future), went by a No Not Enter sign onto Bellinger Avenue and thence home.

I KNOW they mean cars, not old ladies walking; let me enjoy my little rebellions!

I took a selfie when I got home, thinking to post it on Facebook, so Heather would know I am still wearing her lovely hat.  I take terrible selfies.  They remind me that I am not nearly as cute as I like to think I am.  Then again, we are none of us the best judges of our own looks.  And I tell myself, “For heavens’ sake, how cute does a sixty-year-old lady have to be?”

Don’t look at me; look at the hat!

My walk ended up being 20 minutes, just under one mile.  I was and am glad I took a walk.  Exercise is a potent anti-depressant, and I need all the help I can get!

I Ask Myself…

Every other day blogger?  I guess that is what I am for now.  And here I am Friday morning, ten finger typing on my Chromebook, which I still cannot navigate handily but is becoming more familiar. I sip Irish Breakfast Tea and ponder my day.  Will I do anything blogworthy?  Perhaps.  I had a rather blogworthy Wednesday, but did I write about it?  Um, no. Once again I ask, what the hell, me?

I like old buildings against a grey sky.

I throw in a random picture to pep things up.h  I am going to call this my Lame Post Friday post, so the pressure is off.  This was taken during a walk on Main Street in Herkimer, NY, the former Christ Episcopal Church and Herkimer County Courthouse.  The latter is part of Herkimer’s Historic Four Corners, which regular readers know I love to walk or run by.  I walked by them the other day but did not make a Pedestrian Post mentioning it.  See, I have all kinds of things I could write blog posts about, I just don’t.  What’s that all about?

Do Not Enter my brain; it could get scary.

Another landmark I passed on Wednesday’s walk.  I do love to defy a Do Not Enter sign.  Oh, don’t worry; I never do it in my car.  Sheesh!

Will I see any of these any time soon?

I close with a bit of hope for spring.  I’m afraid my crocuses will have a hard time showing up this year, because dead leaves from last fall lie thickly on my lawn.  Once again I neglected to put down more crocus bulbs, as I have intended to do every year since I moved in (2005).  That is, I put some down in 2005 but have never done so again.  I am not even going to ask myself why not.

However, this bit of nonsense is now over 300 words, so I say, good enough for Lame Post Friday. I adjourn for another cup of tea.

Monday Mosey

I think I have used that title before.  However, I took a few pictures while walking earlier so I thought a Pedestrian Post with Pictures would be nice.  Just a little change from Monstrous Monday.

The main reason I wanted to walk was to mail a letter I forgot to take with me when I left the house this morning.  I thought if I brought it to the post office by five it would still go out today.  Additionally, I was going to meet my friend Kim for a libation.  We both had kind of a rough day and wanted to commiserate.

After some commiseration and conversation at the End Zone Pub in Herkimer, she went on to a meeting, and I walked home.  When I had first set out, I had thought I might take a couple of pictures but encountered no photo ops.  On the way home, however, I noticed some snowdroos.

Pretty!

I think there are some white violets in the shot as well.  I do love flowers.

Preview of Coming Attractions.

When I passed Basloe Library I noticed some green poking up.  I look forward to seeing them grow and bloom.

Two handsome buildings.

As I continued up Main Street, I was struck by the Episcopal Church  (now sadly closed) and the Herkimer County Court House.  The latter is part of my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners.  The picture does not quite do them justice, but I tried.

It was a pleasant little walk.  I took a slightly longer walk before work this morning, but the lighting was not so good for pictures then.  I do enjoy a walk, and I hope my reader’s enjoy reading about it.  Once again, thank you for tuning in.

Oh Yeah, My Friday Post

Yes, once again I am late as well as lame.  I was tired, what a surprise.  I made it through the day at work despite a headache (migraine? sinus? tension? I can’t say my headaches lack variety).  In fact the headache was pretty much gone by the end of the day, so I had that going for me.

Back home I couldn’t muster the oomph to cook, but did manage to watch television and knit.  I need to find a place to donate a bunch of scarves and afghans. Then I need to learn how to knit and crochet things other than scarves and afghans.

Sven brightens any day for me!

One of the things I watched on TV was a DVR’d episode of Svengoolie.  He was screening Frogs, a truly cheesy flick from 1972.  I had seen it before but did not remember a lot of it.  I hope I remember not to watch it again.

An impressive structure.

I wanted to throw in another picture and found this one of Herkimer County Courthouse.  I ran by it on this morning’s run (my excuse for being even later with Friday’s post).  Regular readers know how much I love Herkimer’s Historic Four Corners.

Another of the Four Corners.

I suppose I could do a Saturday Running Commentary Post, but not right now.  I can only hope I will manage to make my Saturday blog post on Saturday.  We shall see.

Late Post Friday

Here I am once again, typing in a post (OK, picking out one letter at a time with the stylus) early on the morning after I was supposed to make said post. Yes, they are only my rules for me, but I feel I should follow them a little better than I do. But never mind that: on with the post.

I am still figuring out this new editor and somehow put these two vaguely related photos here. I daresay I could get rid of them easily enough, but I prefer to just go with it.

The picture on the left is Pete’s Tavern, on North Main Street in Herkimer, NY. The one on the right is Herkimer County Courthouse, further up Main at my beloved Historic Four Corners.

Next annoying thing about this new editor: I can’t see my word count as I go. How will I know when I reach my goal of 200 words? Shall I count them, as I did back in my pre-computer school days? Let us not resort to drastic measures.

This is turning into a Non-Sequitur Post, as I accidentally choose another photo and go with it. This is the Rose of Sharon from our backyard. I need to do some yard work this weekend. That might make a better blog post.

I am just going to admit here that I am fighting another bout of depression. I hesitate to say so, because my mother reads this blog and I do not want her to worry. Then, too, I can hear some people saying, “Poor pitiful you! Stop whining already!” Oh wait, that is my inner critic. But perhaps she has a point. A cup of coffee, a good run. I’ll be fine.

And I will strive to make my Saturday blog post on Saturday .

I Ran, Then I Slacked

How did it get to be after five on Saturday and not have my blog post done?  The best I can do is a Slacker Saturday post.  I’m not sure f I can even manage that, but I will try to include a picture or two, just to make things a little more interesting.

Herkimer County Court house, taken in March 2020.

I went for a run this morning,  hoping to make a Saturday Running Commentary post.  I ran by my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners,  and above is a picture of same, not taken during my run, of course.

Where I often feel I belong after a run.

Here is a picture of some of the graves around Herkimer Reformed Church, also part of the Historic Four Corners.  It is a lovely area.  I wrote a blog post about it years ago, long before I knew how to add pictures to a post.  When the weather gets a little better, and the ground less muddy, I will return and do a better post (preview of coming attractions).

Full disclosure:  I like wine.

I can’t find a better picture to close with,  so here is a shot of wine bottles on my counter.  Yes, I have been drinking wine while on quarantine.  And one reason I want to make this post: so I can feel free to enjoy some more. Happy Saturday,  everyone!

Virtual Run, Late Post

So I think I ran 5Ks on Saturday.  Regular readers may remember I was going to run the Social Distance Virtual 5K sponsored by Rock City Runners of Little Falls.  I ran something, at any rate.

I meant to write my blog post about it yesterday, but I feel sure my readers will forgive me. I was undecided as to whether or not to run right up to the last minute. One factor in favor of running was that my $10 registration would benefit Little Falls Food Pantry.  I suppose I coukd have just made a donation directly and had done with, but we all know that is not my style.

All bright-eyed and bushy-tailed?

I took a before picture. Please note that the shirt is from the Reindeer Run 5K, also sponsored by Rock City Runners. The only 5K track I could remember was the Herkimer Dare 5K.  At least, I hoped I could remember it.  I think the last time I ran it was 2013.  That may have been the last time anybody ran it, since, alas, it is no longer a thing.

I knew it ended at my beloved Historic Four Corners.  I walked there from my house and put my sweatshirt and water bottle at the Herkimer County Courthouse.  I was pretty sure nobody would bother them, but I used my shabbiest sweatshirt and water bottle just in case.  I walked up Main Street to the starting point.

Not surprisingly,  I could not recall the exact spot, although I knew it was not all the way at German Street.  I picked a spot that looked good, and off I went, like the proverbial herd of turtles.

I knew to go down Main to Church Street, all the way out Church, around the corner to German Street and up Lou Ambers Drive to Herkimer College (or HCCC, as I usually call it).  Oh, it was not fun going up that hill!  I went up it once recently, and went up another bad hill earlier in the week.  It did not seem to matter.  However, if there is one thing I know how to do, it is to persevere.

Once I got up to the college, I realized I was not quite clear on where to turn around.  The Dare 5K has two routes.  One goes just to the college, then down the back road and through Brookfield Park (also known as the Unknown Park in this space). When that route suffered damage in the flood of 2013, they changed to run to go up through the parking lots of the college and back down Lou Ambers Drive.

I ran all the way to the parking lot by the gym.  I think that was how far the route went.  In any case, I am sure it went no further.  Better too far then not far enough, I thought.  I felt pretty awful by the time I turned around.  Oh crap, was this even going to work?

After I turned around,  I felt better.  What a difference a little downhill makes!  When the downhill got a little steeper, I didn’t like it as much.  I leaned back and kept it under control.  I thought about really making use of gravity and barreling down that hill, but I am a little leery of getting out of control.

The only problem I had once I got back into the village was that I somehow got it into my head that I should turn onto Prospect Street.  Where were those damn Four Corners?   Stupid!  I should have turned at Main Street!  A turn onto Church Street corrected the error, and I don’t think it changed the length of the run.

My hair is so pretty!

When I got home I took another selfie.  I felt pretty pleased with myself, although I also felt pretty awful.  A shower and breakfast helped.  I went for a short run on Sunday (today).  And I see I have written kind of a long blog post.  Not a bad weekend, I say.

Memories of Walks Past

It seems silly to have a Tired Tuesday post when I haven’t been to work or been doing a whole lot around the house either.  Yet, here I am.  For me it is the last day of March, although my WordPress timestamp says it is April 1.  Well, I can’t spend a whole blog post whining (yes, I know I have done it before, and how unhandsome of you to remind me) (you know who you are). Quick, throw in a picture to pep things up.

One of my favorite neighborhood trees.

I went back to March 2019 looking for pictures of Herkimer, NY (where I live).  I did not take my Tablet with me on my last couple of walks.  Today’s walk was the highlight of my day.  It was a relaxed, meditative sort of walk.  I felt sad but knew I had good reason to. Walking made me feel a little better.

A more recent picture:  Herkimer County Courthouse, a local landmark.

I often find myself walking by Herkimer Historic Four Corners.

Do you suppose the park is haunted?

I almost always walk through Myers Park on my daily trek to the post office (full disclosure: I missed Sunday).  When I notice that it was a burying ground, I flash on the scene in Poltergeist:  “You son of a bitch!  You DIDN’T MOVE THE BODIES!!!”

I did not write this note, but I could have.

To end on a lighter note, here is a note I found on the sidewalk one morning when taking my cool down walk after a run.  I brought it home,  because naturally I thought it was meant for my husband Steven.

I will probably go for a walk and/or run tomorrow.  I may blog about it, or another topic may magically appear.  Any suggestions?  If so, please comment below (hey, that rhymed!).

Seeing the Sights on a Sunny Monday

It was a perfectly beautiful day in the Mohawk Valley, sunny and warmer than it has been in a long time.  I knew I would be happy if I got outside after work to enjoy it.  I decided to take a walk with my Tablet and take pictures for a Pedestrian Post.

I did not really know what I hoped to get pictures of.  The dirt-covered remains of snow piles?  Brown grass at last uncovered?  Bare tree branches?  The last actually sounded good.  I love to see bare branches against the sky.  I have been admiring them against whit and grey skies lately.  Today the sky was a lovely blue.

But could I get the shot?  When I finally picked a tree to try, I found I could not clearly see the screen of my Tablet because of the sun.  Oh dear.  I clicked and hoped for the best.

I just think the branches look so cool!

That one didn’t turn out too bad.  This is on the path over what used to be a hydraulic canal, a favorite place to walk or run. I took a shot of the path as well.

The painted spots invite you to step or jump on them.

Next I decided to walk by my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners.  I took pictures of all four corners, but I will only the best shots.

The Courthouse is a handsome building.

I have not made it over to see this exhibit yet.

This was outside the Suiter House of the Herkimer County Historical Society,  obviously one of my favorite places.

Gravestones in front of the Herkimer Reformed Church

I continued down Main Street to Basloe Library.  Naturally I wanted to give the library a shout-out.

I love libraries!

It was a very pleasant walk.  I am SO looking forward to spring!

Remember Roxy?

So there I was, trying to think of something to make a blog post about that was not whining about how I couldn’t make a blog post today or sharing pictures of monster movies, when I saw that a friend on Facebook had shared a memory from 2015, and I said, “Ah, Roxy.”

I’m being threatened by the guy with the ax, but don’t worry: I turn the tables on him.

This is a rehearsal shot from the play Roxy by Jack Sherman, that was presented by the Herkimer County Historical Society at Ilion Little Theatre in September of 2015.  It concerns a famous local murderess, who was tried in the Herkimer County Courthouse and hanged behind the 1834 Jail. I played the title role.  It was a large cast, and everybody had a chance to shine.  It was quite the theatrical experience for all involved (I believe I wrote a few blog posts about it).  Having downloaded the above photo for inclusion in today’s post, I typed “Roxy Ilion Little Theatre” into the Facebook search box to see what else I could find.

I didn’t really look like this, although I tried.

This is the poster.  The Historical Society also had little magnets of it made up.  I have one on my refrigerator now.

Isn’t he handsome?

This is my wonderful husband, Steven, who played four different roles.  Here he portrays Dr. Suiter, who rather fancied himself as a forensic expert and had a lot to do with getting Roxy hanged.  Thanks a lot, Steve!

That reward isn’t really being offered, so don’t go calling “America’s Most Wanted.”

A friend put this frame on a picture of me.  As far as I remember, no reward was offered for Roxy’s capture, and she wasn’t that hard to take in anyways.  If you want to know the real story of Roxalana Druse, I recommend James M. Greiner’s book, Last Woman Hanged.  I said I was not going to be in any more plays for a while.  Still, if anybody decided to stage a revival of Roxy… well, let’s just say I would take it under consideration.
