Before Dinner Lame

It looks like I have made it to another Lame Post Friday.  It only remains to be seen (does that sound like I am looking at a dead body?  Asking for a friend) whether or not I can finish the post ON Friday.  Friends are picking me up for dinner in less than an hour.  I usually do not take so long to make a blog post, especially a lame one such as I contemplate making this evening.

Watching for my friends?

This picture did not turn out as nicely as I had hoped.  It is my Elliott Ghoul and Godzilla looking out the window.  I caught sight of them as I came down the stairs one day and thought Godzilla looked so cute, I had to take a picture.  Full disclosure:  It is not actually Godzilla.  It is just some dinosaur that I think my late husband Steve or I won in a claw machine some time ago.  However, since I like to make him dance around while I sing the Blue Oyster Cult song that goes, “History shows again and again how nature points up the folly of me-en… Go, go, Godzilla!” I feel free to call him Godzilla.

A cool guy pouring good booze.

And here is a unused photo from a tasting at Valley Wine and Liquor in Herkimer, NY, of which I have a few.  I really meant to write about this one, because it was stuff from a New York State distillery.  Perhaps I still can, but not today.  For one reason, I have to make sure I have time to get ready to go and watch for my friends.  I really can’t count on Elliott and Godzilla to let me know when they are here.

However, I see I am approaching 300 words, which is very nice for a Lame Post Friday post.  If only I could think of a clever headline, my life would be perfect!

Oh well, I guess nothing is perfect.

Prescription: Auditions

I just got back from Ilion Little Theatre, where I auditioned for Prescription: Murder.  I have not auditioned for a play since late summer 2023, so it was kind of a big deal for me.  After my bad experience on Sunday ( blog post titled “The Real Dangers of VD”), I parked on the street.  As I walked up to the door, trying to step in others’ footprints till I got to the shoveled part, I saw a friend scattering sand.  Phew!

Check out the raincoat!

Prescription: Murder was the premier of Columbo, who regular readers will recognize as one of my heroes.  I think I did a good job in my readings, but there were a lot of talented people there.

The set was from the previous play.

I asked people if they minded if I took pictures for blogging purposes, and they were very gracious about it.  Everybody was nice, clapping after each scene was read.

They were plotting!

If I don’t get a part, I hope to work on costumes, props, or backstage.  I just love community theatre and hope to become more involved.  Like the song says, there’s no people like show people!

Auditions continue tomorrow, Friday Feb. 7, at 6, if any local readers are interested in auditioning.  Performance dates are March 28, 29, 30,  April 4, 5 and 6, with Friday and Saturday shows at 7:30 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m.

Rehearse Yesterday, Skate Another Day?

I missed making my Tired Tuesday post but perhaps could manage a Wuss-out Wednesday.  We shall see.  Yesterday I should have made a Post Rehearsal Post about  Curtains for Frangelica, the murder mystery we are presenting this Saturday at New Hartford America Legion.  I reminded myself at least eight times to take a picture of rehearsal for a blog post but alas did not.

But we did rehearse and will present the murder mystery.

Just to give another shout-out, Curtains for Frangelica will be presented Saturday, Jan. 25, at New Hartford America Legion.  For tickets call 315-736-7041.  I believe they still have seats available.

Rehearsal last night went pretty well, so it is too bad I did not take a couple pictures to make a full post about it, because I do not have much else going on.  I did write a short article for The Daily Sentinel, which they said was OK, about the ice rink at the Frankfort Marina.  I guess that would be a good thing for Mohawk Valley Girl to say something about.

Too cold for anybody to skate the day I was there

I was disappointed but not surprised to find nobody there skating when I went to get a couple pictures.  For one reason, it was before school let out.  For another, it was quite cold.  I may try to find a pair of ice skates and take advantage of one of the village rinks.  It would make a good blog post (preview of coming attractions).  Don’t get your hopes up to see a picture of me looking foolishly awkward on the ice, though.  How could I take a selfie at such a time?

It Is Still the 20’s

Oh dear, I last posted on Monday and today is Thursday.  I have had no Mohawk Valley Adventures to blog about. I have no profound thoughts to share about the new year, except to perhaps observe we are halfway through the Roaring Twenties and we seem to be wasting them.  Then again, what did I think was going to happen.  Speakeasies and bathtub gin?  It was really not the thrill we make it out to be.  A lot of the illegal alcohol was industrial stuff the bad guys added stuff to that was supposed to make it potable.  Sometimes it did, sometimes not so much.  The thrill, I read, was that you were taking your life in your hands every time you gave the password and ordered a “cup of coffee.”  Yeah, great gamble.  You win, you get a hangover.  You lose, you go blind or die.  Where was I going with this?

Me, pretending it was the ’20s in 2019.

I do enjoy the pretend 1920s, where we wear flapper dresses and listen to jazz music.  Oh why not gloss over all the negative aspects?  We are looking for entertainment not historical accuracy!

Here’s a suspicious group.

These shots were from a fundraiser at one of the Rutgers mansions in Utica, NY.  Look how handsome my husband was (he’s the one on the left, you know, the handsome one).

I haven’t had a chance to wear this dress in a while.

Here is the last year I went to the fundraiser.  I found the dress at a local thrift store.  I fear the headband made me look more That Girl and It Girl, but it was the only way I could make the wig work.

Perhaps I could make one of my murder mysteries this year a 1920s theme (preview of coming attractions).  In any case, I have blathered on for over 300 words.  I’ll slap on a headline, call this a Non-Sequitur Thursday and drive on.  As always I shall try for a better blog post tomorrow, and I thank you for tuning in.

Historical Society to the Rescue!

Fine daily blogger I am.  I missed three days.  At first I put “several” but then I counted.  Three is more like a few. I don’t make the rules.

I think Santa likes me anyways. He’s not a big reader of blogs, so I hear.

I threw in a photo right away.  This is Santa Claus, who was at the Herkimer County Historical Society last Saturday.  They were also selling cookies.  Yum!  I was in a perfectly dreadful mood and had been for some days.  I did not know what to do, but I wanted to support the Society, so I walked over.  The volunteers gave me a warm welcome (they know me from the murder mysteries) and invited me to hang out with them for as long as I wanted to.  Of course I did and had a wonderful time.

I wish the picture was a little clearer.

The Suiter House was beautifully decorated.  Of course I took a few pictures.

I don’t know who the lady in the portrait is.

We talked about Christmas villages, and how they tend to grow, sometimes out of control.  I thought the one on their mantle was just right.

No, I did not sit on his lap!

I did not tell Santa what I wanted for Christmas, because quite frankly, I have been bad all year and do not expect any presents, although I know Santa is something of a pushover, so I might in fact get something (that is not a run-on sentence, although I suppose a period might not have come amiss).

I felt very Christmasy and happy after my visit to the historical society.  I hope to volunteer there in the new year, to a greater extent than putting on the murder mystery.  That would probably make for some good blog posts.

The Herkimer County Historical Society is located at 400 and 406 Main St., Herkimer, NY.  You can visit their website at www.herkimercountyhistory.org

No Ghosts, But Christmas Past

The late blog posts continue as I attempt to make Wednesday’s post Thursday morning.  I thought I could do a Wayback Wednesday, maybe a combination Wayback Wednesday/Throwback Thursday.  Perhaps a visit from the Ghost of Christmas Past.

Proof that Santa Claus does so visit the naughty ones!

I am not sure where this particular Santa Claus is.  We got him from the Herkimer County Historical Society.  He had blown into their yard one blustery December day, and nobody claimed him.  Our friends at the society thought my husband, Steven and I would give him a good home.  It is in fact only the top half of a Santa, hence our idea to hide him behind the fireplace screen.

Sometimes I decorate myself.

I can’t resist showing this picture of me in a festive outfit.  I still have the shirt; I purchased it from the J.C. Penney catalogue back into he late ’80s (why in the world is catalogue underlined?  I am not looking it up, dammit!)

We’ve added a couple of Santas since.

In case you wondered about the Santas on the stairs in the last shot, here is a picture of them without me blocking the view.   I should clean up my steps and bring some Santas down to cheer myself up.  I have a few Christmas decorations out, amidst the mess I keep trying to clean.  Will things ever look better?  Will my house ever be ready to receive guests?  Will anybody deign to come over if I do get cleaned up?  For the answers to these and other questions of greater or lesser interest, stay tuned to Mohawk Valley Girl!

I Carry On on Wrist to Forehead Sunday

Hello and welcome to another Wrist to Forehead Sunday post.  Never mind why I am ready to swoon, dramatically posted with the back of one wrist to my forehead, on a handy chaise lounge (alas that no such lounge is in fact handy).

Full disclosure:  I keep making typos.  Am I too tired?  Have I had a glass or two of wine?  Never mind why; explanations are tiresome.  Let me see what I can come up with for a blog post.

I can’t handle one more thing. I can’t even handle one thing!

Yes, I am watching Columbo.  I suppose I should expand my viewing, but that will not happen today.  I have to laugh about ‘One more thing.”  At two of my previous work places, I had a habit of going up to people and saying, “And another thing about that!” If they responded, I would admit that there was not another thing about that. If they really called me on it, I would have to admit that there was in fact no that.  I had a lot of silly things at work I would say, just to keep things lively.

The upcoming Monday is ever a problem.

I feel I should not be too worried about Monday.  I have, as it happens, other things to worry about. But I shall not expand on that; other people’s problems are tiresome.

Here’s to Sunday!

For my closing photo, I share my late, dearly missed husband Steven, toasting me on  Sunday some time ago at the Miner’s Table in Herkimer, NY.  I had spend some time conquering an overgrown pricker bush in our yard while he was at work.  When he came home, I suggested we go out and celebrate. He graciously agreed.  Yes, Sundays were better with a nice husband.  However, I must carry on as best I can. I hope I have done so with another blog post.  Thank you for tuning in.

Slack Today, Shop Later

Here I am back on my Chromebook , ten finger typing, and hoping to make some sort of a Saturday blog post.  A Scattered Saturday post is out of the question, because I did not scatter much.  I guess a Slacker Saturday post is within the realm of possibility.

Looks pretty relaxed to me.

Here is a picture of me last year at this time. I may or may not have participated in Shop Small Saturday, although I rather think I did.  Alas that I am too lazy to go back and check.  Full disclosure:  I have had a couple of drinks and am feeling a bit tired  right now

In my defense, I have experienced a bit of stress during my Thanksgiving weekend.  Never mind what.

Pretty, yes?

Here is a picture from a Shop Small Saturday in the past.  it is some lovely angels carved from rocks, sold by Rock Quartz Stand in Herkimer, NY.  I have purchased these angels for family and friends, not just at Christmas time.

Where I could have gone.

There are many local places I could have gone for Shop Small Saturday today.  One good one is Mohawk Valley Antiques Mall, at 100 E Main St. Mohawk, NY.  Of course I still have a great deal of December to shop local.  I hope it will be OK if I have not gotten right out on the Friday after Thanksgiving to do so.  I have a feeling it will be OK, especially if I take a blog post of the paces I shop.

Because I Felt Like It

AAAaaand we’re back to late blog posts.  My computer does not like the way I spelled “And,” but it is the way I said it in my head.  Also, we learned in junior high school English class never to start a sentence with “and,” “but,” or “because,” so ha ha on two counts.  I am in a kind of a rollicking mood this morning, and I intend to make a Non-Sequitur Thursday post.

It’s not hump day either.

I looked for a random photo and decided on this camel from the Utica Zoo. I guess the picture would be more appropriate for Wednesday, so you can see what a rebel I am.

These signs should be posted on my mind.

I searched for a while to find a “Do Not Enter” sign.  As regular readers know, whenever I am walking or running and encounter a sign that says “DO NOT ENTER,” I enter.  It makes me feel like a rebel.  Oh, I know, they are talking about vehicular traffic, not old ladies plodding along at whatever pace I can manage.  Give me a break; I have to get my chuckles where I can.

Herman is horrified that I am making my Thursday blog post on Friday.

I cannot make any promises about making my Lame Post Friday post on Friday.  Then again, I rarely make promises (but I often make typos) (I say that because it took me three tries to type “promises”) (but I digress).  I see I am approaching 250 words.  What, oh what, can I come up with for a headline?

It’s a Waste Not to Go to the Library

I thought I would do a Waste Not Want Not Wednesday post.  For one reason I have two pretty good pictures I haven’t used.  For another reason, it’s still Wednesday.

Quite an interesting looking building.

Last Friday I went to a book sale at Ilion Free Public Library.  It was bag day, where you could fill a bag for $5.  Like many book lovers, I have too many books in my house.  And yet, I found more I would really like to read.  In fact, I have already read one of them.  I felt a little bad as I left the library and took this picture.  I thought, I am going to write about the book sale, and local readers are going to be sorry they missed it.

However, Ilion Free Public Library does a lot of fun things:  Mahjong, writers group, line dancing, and more.  If you go to their Facebook page, you can see the calendar for the month.  I may have to start doing more library things.

Feed the monster! Return your books!

Here’s another example of how fun this library is:  here is the book return.  Naturally I had to take a picture.

I love all the libraries in this area.  In fact, I never met a library I didn’t like!  I keep thinking I am going to start going to libraries more often, to look for books or to just sit and write.  For one reason, I can make more blog posts about libraries.
