Second Guessing my First Run of 2019

It is important to me that Saturday Running Commentary be a thing again, even if I neglect to make my post shortly after my run, which I feel is the best way to do it (that’s not a run-on sentence) (although I suppose a run-on sentence may be appropriate for a Running Commentary  post).  Anyways, I ran this morning and I am going to try to comment about it even hours after the fact.

It is my first run of 2019. I felt too tired after my New Year’s Eve celebrations (although they were tame by many standards) (then again, why should I worry about anybody else’s standards?) on Jan. 1.  Jan. 2, 3 and 4 I was working ten-hour days and TIRED, and I believe my blog posts reflect that.  I almost did not run today.  I considered going to the Mohawk YMCA and doing 30 minutes on the elliptical, I thought about taking a long walk and saying, “good enough.”  Then I said what the hell, got into running clothes and went.

It was in the low 30’s.  Weather on the One’s on Spectrum News said some freezing was still going on, so I was a bit nervous, but I thought it was not precipitating.  True, the roads looked wet… sometimes it is best not to think too long about these things but just to get out and start running.  So I did.

I did not head toward German Street, as is my usual practice, because it was close to eight and I saw a number of cars going by and I intended to the run in the road.  A mere glance at the sidewalk confirmed me in my intention.  As I ran down Bellinger Street, I saw a runner coming towards me running on the sidewalk and felt silly.  Then I thought I was ridiculous.  Normally I run on the sidewalk and feel self-conscious seeing other runners on the road.  Do I really think these other runners are judging me?  And why should I care if they do?  I choose to run on the sidewalk.  Or, like today, on the road. Similarly, other runners can make their choices.  Oh well, at least these thoughts keep me occupied while running.

The roads were not awful, but I did not completely trust them.  I felt there could be ice, and sometimes I knew there was ice.  A couple of times I dared to go up on the sidewalk, but I did not stay there, because I definitely encountered ice eventually.  But I kept running.  I was happy to see some people’s Christmas decorations still up.  Traditionally, decorations are supposed to stay up till Jan. 6, Twelfth Night.  I always have a hard time letting go of the holiday.

My intention was not to run too long, since I had taken four days off and only gone for a long walk the day before that (go ahead and judge me, remember I am not supposed to care who does).  As I ran back towards my house, keeping an eye on my watch and wondering how long over 20 minutes I could or should do, my legs were saying, “We cool. We got this.”  I was surprised.  Are these the same legs, I asked myself, that for three days at week were whining, “We’re tired!  We’re stiff!  We ache! Sit down!”  What the hell, legs?  But there is no point in trying to figure these things out; I am not clever enough to understand them.

I reasoned that if I ran 20 minutes, with my 10 minute cool-down walk it would be 30 minutes, the length of time I would have spent on the elliptical at the Y.  I ended up running for 23 minutes, so  I thought that was pretty good.  I was delighted with myself for running at all.  Would 2019 be the year I did not stop running in the winter but kept up running full time till next spring and summer?  Would I never again have to write “Begin again” in my running journal?  Then I thought, it is Jan. 5 and this is my first run of 2019, is that bad?  And here I am second-guessing myself again.  What the hell, me?

Next I am going to start second-guessing this blog post.  Is it really a Running Commentary?  Is it any good as a blog post?  As I have observed before, if dithering burned calories, I would have no problem meeting my weight-loss goals.

Late, Lame, What a Shame

It is that moment on a Friday, when I want to just not worry about being a blogger and go to sleep.

I typed that last night, then I went to sleep.  Full disclosure:  Steven and I got together with our friend Kim.  We went to Happy Hour at Asteroga Ale House then to the VFW for another drink.  We’re not members of the VFW, but Kim knows some folks there.  I told them I was V but not FW.  We found out we could join the auxiliary, so we may do that.

The point is, wine makes me sleepy.  Still, it was a fun Friday night.  We used to go out every Friday night.  When we lived in Potsdam, NY, it was Happy Hour at Alger’s.  When we moved to Norwood, NY, we went to Jeremiah’s. Good times.  Actually, it is the epitome of the expression, the good old days — we weren’t good, we weren’t old, and they weren’t days, they were nights.

So here I am at five in the morning, typing in something, anything, so I can still feel I am a daily blogger.  Well, why not?  We make up rules for ourselves and can bend them to our will.  I call myself a daily blogger.  If I miss a day and make two the next, I say that counts. If one is pure foolishness, I say it still counts!  And if I want to call it Lame Post Friday early on a Saturday morning, I will.  I hope your weekend is beginning splendidly.

Blogger’s Sad Day

It is how I feel, but a bit less melodramatic today.

No, it is not Wrist to Forehead Tuesday.  It is in the nature of a blogger’s day off, because I am too sad and distressed to make a proper post.  However, I think if I put a few of my thoughts down, it will make me feel better.

Community theatre lost a great asset, and I lost a friend today with the passing of Ilion resident Julianne Allen.  I am profoundly shocked as well as saddened, because she was about my age (you know, not ancient) and not sick that I knew of.  The above picture is from our dramatic scene together in Dirty Work at the Crossroads at Ilion Little Theatre in 2013.  My husband, Steven, directed.  Julianne and I worked on several productions together, and she worked on many more that I was not involved in but enjoyed watching.  She was always willing to do what she could and what was needed.

In fact, in Shattered Angel, she took a part that was originally written for a man.  Director and writer Stephen Wagner originally cut the part but then decided to change the role to the man’s wife and cast Julie.  It was going to be a great bit of comic relief, because Stephen was really utilizing Julie’s attitude.

At her first rehearsal, she was already showing us the attitude.

Julie on the left, me on the right, ILT president Kelly Stone in the middle.

Just to end with another picture including me, here we are in Harvey from 2012.  Rest in Peace, Julie.  I hope you’re putting on a great show for the angels.

An Idea for a Blog Post?

I did it again.  I went a day without posting so want to make two posts today.  I considered getting up at four, so that one could argue it was still the middle of the night (even though we all know damn well it is not; thus we kid ourselves into believing what we like). However, I felt I needed the rest more than I needed to meet my own arbitrary goals.  So here I sit at 7 a.m. trying to remember what I composed in my head at four before deciding to just go back to sleep.  It probably wasn’t very good anyways.

That raises a subject I may or may not have blogged about before:  writers are often given the advice to keep a notebook and pencil by the bed, because you will wake up in the middle of the night with a truly brilliant idea that you will NOT remember.  Can any of you writers out there confirm to me that you have actually had such an idea, written it down in the night, AND (and here’s the kicker) still thought it was brilliant the next morning?  I never have.  And now I find sleep so necessary and yet so elusive, I don’t even want to wake myself up enough to write it down.

I know, I know, you will argue (you know who you are) that if I DON’T write it down, how will I know if it was or was not brilliant?  Can I really be so profligate with my ideas that I am willing to just throw away all these inspirations?  What do I think I am, some perpetual idea machine?

I must admit, that is a point.  For example, one reason I did not make my blog post when I had time yesterday is that I could not for the life of me think of anything to write.  In my defense, it was not the only reason.  I also wanted to finish knitting a prayer shawl so I can get it blessed after church this morning (the reason sleep was so necessary at four).

So tonight when I go to bed, it will be with a notebook and pen at my side (maybe this will at least inspire me to clean off my bedside table; it needs it).  Eventually perhaps I can write a blog post about the results.

Ghosts, Birds, Heat, and Bette Davis on Non-Sequitur Thursday

I am so tired of this heat!!!  There, I complained. I have been all day on and off Facebook and have not, but now I did.  And I have more blog followers than I have Facebook friends, which gives me no virtue for refraining to complain there only to complain here.  So judge me if you are so inclined. Never mind that, I want to make a blog post, even if I feel too wrung out and mildewy to do so. Pretty much all I have done today is to  watch movies, so how about a Non-Sequitur Thursday movie post?  I’ll even include pictures.

Up the stairway, into the unknown…

We began our movie watching with The Haunting, the 1963 original, not the pathetic remake.  It is an excellent movie I have written about before, extremely scary using only sound effects, lighting, and acting.

I’m thinking they don’t want chicken for dinner.

We continued our movie watching with another movie from 1963, The Birds.  It is a perennial favorite of ours.

All that beauty, all that talent!

Next I suggested Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), because it takes place where it is very very hot, so we could totally identify.  Steven agreed that he could not object if I left him for Paul Newman.  I feel the same way about him and Elizabeth Taylor, although we did not discuss that.

There’s a Rogue’s Gallery, if you like.

My next suggestion was Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964), because it was another southern movie.  Bette Davis, Cecil Kellaway, Agnes Moorehead, just to name our favorites!  In fact, I think I will close with Bette Davis, in a shot I have used for my Facebook profile picture.  I loves me some Bette Davis.

“I could spit right in your eye!”

Tired Tuesday with Monsters

I tried for a real post today, or at least not a completely foolish one, but I sat here typing and backspacing out.  So I wrote the following, and I’m going to call it a Tired Tuesday post.  Sorry, folks. I’ll try not to Wuss-out on Wednesday.

“What do you mean you can’t write a blog post today?”

When all else fails, look for pictures from old monster movies.  I guess the above is more a horror flick than a monster movie, but you now I adore alliteration (see what I did there?).  The above picture is from The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920), a pretty trippy silent movie.  I think I need to watch it again soon.  It might be problematic, though, because in general, I only watch silent movies while running in place on the mini-tramp.  If I try to knit or crochet, I can’t keep my eyes on the screen, which is kind of essential when there is no dialog.

“Now THAT’S a centerfold!”

Here’s two monsters, one on the cover, one looking at the magazine, and the word “MONSTERS” on the magazine!  A perfect picture for a monster post.  If only this was a Monday, my alliterative cup would overflow.

He’s a charming fellow.

As I looked through my Media Library, I saw The Brain that Wouldn’t Die (1962).  Only I didn’t want a picture of Jan in a pan; I wanted the monster.  I found the above on Dracula’s House of Halloween, one of my favorite Facebook pages.

The best thing to do on a foolish post is to keep it short.  I just passed 250 words and shared three pictures.  Let’s call it a day.

May Pizza!

Steven and I celebrated today’s extremely warm weather with a short walk and dinner out.  I had meant to make a Pedestrian Post and took my Tablet on the walk in hopes of finding some of them there May flowers to take pictures of.  That did not work out so well.  I tried to take a picture of two trees starting to get leaves, but all I could see on the Tablet was the reflection of my own stupid face. No, I did not have it in “selfie” mode;  it was the result of the bright sun on the black screen.  I think.  I did not continue to look at it, because the angle was really showing up my middle-age turkey neck.  I don’t mind getting old, but there is no reason to stare at some things.

The sun was bright and hot; shade and breeze were not plentiful, but what we encountered was appreciated.  No, I am NOT complaining.  I would have enjoyed authentic spring weather, but I’ll take summer.  I said we should sit out on the deck with a couple of beers, but we were hungry and going out to eat sounded really, really good.  I suggested Franco’s Pizza in Ilion.  I had been there for the first time on a recent Scattered Saturday, but Steven had never been.

The restaurant was not crowded, but a few people were ahead of us ordering at the counter.  That was OK, since we needed time to peruse the boards and decide what to get.  We were still debating when it was our turn, so the counter person was able to help the person behind us who was picking up an order.  We saw a few people picking up orders they had called in.  Maybe we’ll do that next time.

At last we decided on a small, thin crust garlic pizza with sausage and mushrooms with ten butter-garlic wings.  We split a bottle of Dasani.  We sat at a tall table and enjoyed the retro ’50’s decor as well as the sunshine coming through the large windows.   The food was delicious, and we brought home leftovers.  Pizza for breakfast, my favorite!

Franco’s Pizza is located at 6 Central Plaza, Ilion, NY, phone number 315-894-5580.  For more information, you can visit their website at www.francosilion.com.  You can also Like them on Facebook.  I did.

Add more Monster Pictures and Keep Typing!

“You called?”

I am having a Nosferatu kind of a day.  By that I mean that I just feel like opening my blog with a picture of my favorite guy (uh, I mean my second favorite guy.  Obviously Steven is my FAVORITE guy).  And since it is Lame Post Friday, I shall. Oh who am I kidding?  When I feel like putting in a picture of a vampire, I do.  That is one of the things that makes blogging such a fun hobby.

I have had quite a day.  Work was stressful, but that was mostly my fault.  Fortunately, this is not a blog about work.  After work, I went and worked out.  It did not go as well as I could have hoped, but you’ll have that.  I feel certain that my body derived some benefit from it.  After coming home, having my usual recovery beverage of chocolate milk, and showering, I went out on a mission.

My mission was to find artificial tulips for props for Spring Into Murder.  I went to every dollar store in the area and then to Wal-Mart (I know, these are not the kinds of stores I normally plug, but in the interests of accuracy, I mention them).  I met success at my last stop.  If I have success in constructing the props, perhaps I will write a blog post titled Adventures in Tulips.

In the meantime, this is my Friday Lame Post.  Unfortunately, I see now that my picture of Nosferatu is completely unrelated to my post.  What to do?  Add more monster pictures and keep typing!

But the full moon is not until Sunday!

In fact, I do not intend to howl tonight.  I am sitting on my couch, chatting with my husband, and watching Dateline.  I believe another episode will follow, or at least one will be available on another channel.  I would like to crochet.  I think one more monster picture and I will be on my merry way.

Next Friday, I think I’ll go dancing!

Monday Movies

One of our all time favorites!

Yes, I said I was going to have a real post this Monday, and here I sit, watching old movies.  I took a vacation day today, never mind why, explanations are tiresome.  When we got back home from our obligations, we wanted to watch movies. I wanted an old one, and Steven (my husband) recommended Witness for the Prosecution (1957).  It was a good idea.  Billy Wilder, yes.

Instead of going on with a Billy Wilder theme, or perchance an Elsa Lanchester or Una O’Connor theme, Steven wanted to see a movie with good music. I suggested The Big Chill (1983).

Quite the star-studded cast for the day.

I think the above image is photo-shopped. I hope it is not copyright protected. I just found it on Facebook and downloaded it.  I see it came from Marshall Jay Kaplan’s Fame Cafe.  I think as long as I credit the source, it falls under the “fair use” clause.  It seems the Facebook page last posted in 2016.  I don’t properly understand the internet, as regular readers know.

Right now, I have more important things to ponder, such as what movie to watch next.  Good music? Old movie?  Monsters? The possibilities are endless.  In the meantime, I need to finish this post. I think I will call it another Mental Meanderings Monday and include one more photo, just because three’s the charm.

Back in the day when people made engravings on lighters for presents.

I don’t know if we’ll watch Strangers on a Train (1951) next, but I’m having trouble finding a picture to include, so this will have to do. In fact, I did mention this as a movie to watch tonight, since the  murder victim in Witness for the Prosecution shows up as in a small but pivotal role in Stranger on a Train.  I guess I don’t know what movie, if any we will watch next.  But at over 300 words, I call this respectable for a blog post. Happy Monday, everybody.

Fun Movies on Wrist to Forehead Sunday

Obviously one of them is up to no good.

Hello and welcome to another Wrist to Forehead Sunday post.  My husband Steven and I just got done watching Deathtrap (1982) with Christopher Reeve and Michael Caine.  It took me a LONG time to find and download an image from the movie!  I am not as adept as others at these things.  No matter.  My only purpose right now is to post something, anything, so that I don’t go a day without posting.  As regular readers know, it is kind of a thing with me.  I think a post about movies will fill the bill nicely.

It’s a real ensemble cast.

Steven wanted to watch a fun movie next; he felt he just couldn’t bear anything serious.  I know the feeling.  I said he should pick one of his old favorites, and he suggested Soapdish (1991).  I was just thinking about that movie the other day, because it was an answer in a crossword puzzle I was working on.  I have had kind of an obsession with pencil puzzles lately, mostly crosswords and cryptograms.  I may psychoanalyze  that some Lame Post Friday.  I think tabletop psychology counts as half-baked philosophy.

Never give up! Never surrender!

I like to include three pictures, so I add one from a movie Steven watched the other day, after I had gone to bed (I go to bed early during the week).  This is one of my favorites too.

I suppose it might have been nice to say something ABOUT these movies and not just show pictures.  Then again, it is Wrist to Forehead Sunday.  Tomorrow I will actually start my week and see if I can come up with better blog posts.  I hope you are all having a lovely weekend.
