I Print, I Type, It’s Wuss-out Wednesday!

I just can’t do it.   I’m sitting here in front of my laptop but typing into my tablet, one letter at a time with the stylus.   I can’t get the printer to work, and I think I made things worse by trying.

OK, back on the laptop (SUCH a relief to type with all ten fingers!).  I do not use the printer often enough, so I usually screw it up the first several tries.  Once I got it working, I realized I was almost out of paper. Yikes! I really think there is a partial ream hanging around somewhere, but I could not find it.  By virtue of searching for stuff I could print on the back of, I got everything I need printed.  A trip to Hummel’s Office Plus is in my near future (just to sneak in a shout-out to a local business).

All this by way of introduction to my usual Wuss-out Wednesday post.  Sorry, readers, but I’m afraid any number of lame posts will be forthcoming in the next month or so.  Then it will be all posts about Morning’s at Seven till May.  Still, even a lame post must be made, so here I sit, typing.

I spent most of my breaks at work trying to learn my lines for Morning’s at Seven.  Next I will have to worry about A Trivial Murder. Learning my lines, that is.  I’ve already written that one.  Other than that, all time must be spent on Murder by the Book, the one I will soon complete writing (as soon as I figure out who did it) (only your really organized writers know these things before they start, you know).

For anyone tuning in late,  A Trivial Murder is an interactive dinner theatre to be presented to benefit the Herkimer County Historical Society at The Travel Lodge in Little Falls on March 23 (Yikes, that’s soon!).  Murder by the Book, also an interactive dinner theatre, will be at the Morning Star Church in Ilion on April 6. I wrote both murder mysteries. Morning’s at Seven by Paul Osborn is a full-length regular play I am in at Ilion Little Theatre, to be presented the last weekend in April and first weekend in May.  On the third weekend in May, I will have a nice, quiet nervous breakdown.

Is It Jogging or Blogging?

I was going to type about not writing, but when I added the parenthetical comment “as Truman Capote once said, that’s not writing, it’s typing,” it reminded me of a story.

In fifth grade, my class was running out to the playground with the teacher, for a kickball game, I think.  The teacher said, “You students aren’t sprinting, you’re jogging!”  in an aghast tone of voice, as if we knew what we were supposed to be doing and were purposely doing it wrong because we were such rotten kids.  I remember feeling bad, because I wasn’t doing it right (I was that sort of kid).   Afterwards, I felt a bit resentful, because he never said we were supposed to be sprinting.  How were we supposed to know?

It was not until years later that I realized, the guy was probably humiliated that this group of fifth graders — even the completely un-athletic ones like me  — were totally outpacing his fat ass (he wasn’t really fat, just mildly overweight, but since he’s the bad guy of the story, I’ll go with fat).  He was pretty much a big jerk, as a teacher and as a human being, so I won’t say “the poor guy.”

In retrospect, I’m glad if he was feeling humiliated.  He humiliated me often enough, but I won’t get into that, because this is a blog, not psychotherapy.  But for heavens’ sake, why would you shame a bunch of fifth-graders for how they move out to a playground?  He didn’t say, “Let’s sprint!”  He just started running and so did we.  It didn’t matter anyways, because by the time he said it, we were where we were supposed to be.  I don’t even remember if it was a kick-ball game or what, but I’m betting if we picked teams I got picked last.  My life was a kind of a burden to me in elementary school.

Incidentally, I remember reading in James Fixx’s famous book about running that he did not differentiate between running and jogging.  I could be remembering that wrong (it was not as memorable as being insulted by an elementary school teacher, I guess).  Regular readers know I call it all running, even my middle-aged shuffle or when I’m thunking along (I really feel “thunking” should be a word).

Why do I remember this stuff when I can’t where I put whatever I happen to be looking for at the time (as happens to me at least once a day)?  More importantly, does it make a good blog post?  Perhaps it does not matter on Wuss-out Wednesday.  Here’s hoping!

Wanted: A Better Blog Post

How did he make those little people?

I was going to go for a Wordless Wednesday and wanted to use a picture I hadn’t used yet.  I looked all through our Downloads on this laptop but could not find anything I liked. Then I saw the picture I downloaded for Monstrous Monday then lost when my laptop cut out.  Score!  It is Ernest Thesiger as Dr. Pretorius in The Bride of Frankenstein (1935).

As you may have noticed, I cannot actually have a blog post without words.  I have mentioned that before.  I like words.  I like to talk, I like to write, even if I have nothing in particular to say.  I suppose this renders me tiresome upon occasion, but, as they say, I gotta be me.

If being tiresome were a crime, perhaps my Wanted poster would look something like this.

This is an older picture of me, with a frame added by a theatre friend of mine.  It was back in 2015, when the Herkimer County Historical Society and Ilion Little Theatre presented the play Roxy by Jack Sherman.  I was honored to play the title role.

This was actually a pretty entertaining flick.

I decided to go to my Media Library for a third picture to round out the post.  I picked this one purely for the alliteration.  Look at all the W’s!  Wasp Woman on Wordless Wednesday!  Or is that Wuss-out Wednesday?  Maybe I should have a glass of wine.

Wuss-Out? Wordless? It’s Wednesday!

Some bloggers have Wordless Wednesday,  showing pictures.  Full disclosure:  I only remember reading one Wordless Wednesday post, and that blogger used words.  I intend to use words, too.

I like the pictures she picked!

I have been meaning to take a picture of these mugs to share on Facebook, but I’d like to share them here as well.  This is the awesome Christmas present my sister, Cheryl, got me and Steven.  Even if I did have too many coffee mugs (and I DON’T), these would be a welcome addition to the collection.

I did not want to do a post with only one picture, so I took a couple more.

Who, me, lolly gag? Say it ain’t so!

This is my birthday present from Cheryl.  She says it sounds like something I would say.  The idea!  In fact, I do prefer dilly dallying to lolly gagging, due to the alliteration involved.  Steven found a good place to hang the sign when he redid our mantle after Christmas.

I’ll have to do some detail shots, to show off specific things.

Steven often goes from holiday to holiday with our mantle.  After Christmas is Valentine’s Day, sometimes followed by St. Patrick’s Day, sometimes going directly into Easter… This year, he went with an any time theme.  Actually, he added a couple of Valentine rubber duckies, in honor of February 14th, but I don’t know if you can see them in this picture.

So this is my Wednesday post.  I think it is a bit of a Wuss-out Wednesday, because all I did was share a few pictures and chatter about them.  I do not think it is such a much as a Wordless Wednesday, though, because I am over 250 words. I can’t do anything right.  Oh well, as usual I am going to hit Publish and hope for the best.  Hope to see you all on Non-Sequitur Thursday.

Wuss-Out Run

I did not promise that today would not be a Wuss-out Wednesday post, did I?  I’m too tired to go back and check, but I think I said I would TRY for something better.  Indeed, I thought about a better post;  I just did not think up a better post, if you see what I mean.

I would have liked to do a Running Commentary post, but running outside just seemed like a bad idea today (I know, some dedicated individuals no doubt did, and here we come to the ugly truth about me).  It was freezing rain onto icy roads.  We all walked from work to our cars slowly and carefully, then spent some good time scraping ice off our vehicles.  My sense of humor came to my rescue as it often does in these cases, and I found myself laughing as I chopped away.  My car’s defrost was even more helpful, and I was soon on my way.

My earlier plan had been to go to the Mohawk YMCA.  I even had my work-out clothes in my car.  However, I did not want to scrape my car off again, so I went home.  Additionally, I wanted to do a load of laundry, to be sure I have clean handkerchiefs.  I did not feel like doing any sort of exercise but talked myself into running in place on the mini-tramp.  Steven was watching Judge Judy.  I said I did not mind watching the rest of that, but he would have to help me find something else to run to when it was over.

As soon as I started running in place, my body was not happy.  Then one toe started to feel like it had a blister on the bottom.  Ouch!  I had said to begin with I was not going to worry about running as long as I had on the weekend.  Twenty minutes would be plenty.  Then I thought maybe 15.  Didn’t I read somewhere that exercise could be done in bouts of 10 minutes?

Judge Judy was almost over when I started.  Steven was out of the room when I finished.  I stepped off the mini-tramp and marched energetically over to the love seat where the remote was.  Climbing back on the tramp, I went back to running in place while I looked for a good show to run to.  It is not easy to click a remote accurately while running in place on the mini-tramp.  Luckily, I was motivated to persevere.

I had my reward when I discovered:  World’s Dumbest!!!  I love World’s Dumbest!  That silly show helped me keep moving for 21 minutes.  I know, it was not the greatest of workouts, but, hey, it is Wuss-out Wednesday.

Who Me? Forget My Blog Post?

Full disclosure:  I got out of bed to make this blog post.  I remembered before I got into bed that I had forgotten my blog (Can you believe such a thing?  What the hell, me?), but I had already heated up my rice bag and did not want to waste the heat (if I put a hot rice bag on the back of my neck every night before I sleep, it helps my headaches).  I have a really sick headache today.  Not so much pain as light-headed-ness and all around crappy feeling.  Sorry to bitch; I’m just trying to give you the full picture.

So I said to hell with it and laid down with the rice bag.  Naturally I could not sleep.  I am an insomniac from way back.  Finally I decided to get back up and make my silly post.  I may still have insomnia, but at least it will not be guilt-ridden from skipping a blog post.

Where was I?  Ah yes, writing about not writing.  I did write today.  Not as much or as good as I had hoped, but you can’t have everything.  Earlier today I gave myself a stern talking to.  I asked myself what I was being so angst-y and dramatic about?  I write light-hearted, chatty fluff. I write fast and I have fun doing it.  Why I can’t seem to do it any old time is a mystery to me, but there is no reason to swoon with my wrist on my forehead (Wrist to Forehead Sunday notwithstanding).

Anyways, this will have to do for today’s post.  We’ll call it a Wuss-out Wednesday and drive on.

Please Excuse Mohawk Valley Girl…

Sorry, kids, it’s a blogger’s sick day.  I’ve had a migraine most of the day.  It’s a little better now, but you know how these things can take it out of you.  Or maybe you don’t know, in which case, lucky you.  Or maybe you do know, yet you manage to drive on and get stuff done nevertheless, in which case, how motivated of you.  In fact, I did get stuff done today:  I worked a fairly productive 10-hour day at my place of employment.  So there.

Really, I feel a little silly whining about my headaches when my pain is obviously much less than other migraine sufferers.  Other people hide in darkened rooms, unable to move or even open their eyes.  This has only happened to me on rare occasions.  Mostly I can get through a day of work, but it sure isn’t fun.  And there was no chance I was going to the YMCA or running afterward.

In the meantime, I cannot bear for today to be the day I do not make a blog post.  So this is another whiny post about I Can’t Make a Blog Post Because I Have a Headache.  I find that appropriate on a Wuss-out Wednesday, although I am quite disappointed in myself.  However, my head is starting to hurt again, so boo hoo me.  Feel free to shake your head and play a miniature violin or otherwise make fun of me.  I’m going into one of them there darkened rooms.

Monsters and Shout-outs, What Day Is It?

What a way to start the new year!  Yesterday’s blog post was dumb and today I can’t even think of anything to write about!  Is 2019 the year I stop being a daily blogger?  SAY IT AIN’T SO!!!!  Then again, it is Wuss-out Wednesday.

Well, that was a lousy lead.  Where can I go from here?  I went back to work today and worked ten hours on my feet.  Um, I did not work on my feet, I stood on my feet while I worked at my job.  The first way sounds like I spent 10 hours giving myself a pedicure.  Imagine the toenails I could get that way!  But I digress.  The fact is, I am tired and somewhat brain dead.  I resorted to monsters yesterday and I am going to be bold enough to do it again today.  We can call it Mid-Week Monsters.  More Monsters at Mid-Week?  Titles are hard.

“Wasn’t I just here yesterday?”

Following yesterday’s dictum, I open with a vampire, Nosferatu to be exact.  I love that guy.

I should follow this guy’s example and have some coffee.   And go on a diet.

I took this fellow’s picture at the Old Barn Marketplace, on Route 5 in Little Falls, NY (you see I can multi-task: show monsters and give shout-outs to local businesses) .  Alas, they are closed for the season, but they will re-open in the spring.  I’ll be sure to visit them when they do, and write a blog post about it.

This is BEFORE he ate all of Margaret’s great treats!

Here’s a business that local readers can visit right away, the So Sweet Candy Cafe.  I don’t imagine the skeleton will be there before October, but you can find lots of yummy treats!  They are located on Varick Street in Utica, NY.

Well, this has not been a completely useless post after all.  I gave shout-outs to two local businesses and shared another picture of Nosferatu.  I wonder if I can find a peppy picture to close with and think of an appropriate title.

Sometimes even a monster has to relax.

This now seems more like a Non-Sequitur Thursday than a Wuss-out Wednesday post.  Well, it is one of those weeks where I can’t remember what day it is.

Blame It On Post-Christmas Let-Down

One of the all time great posters.

Well how can I make a decent blog post when I am in the throes of a post-Christmas letdown?  I guess the let-down has not really reached full strength, but it’s getting there.  Oh well, you’ll have these things, especially when you love Christmas as much as I do.  It should surprise no one that I am not up to discussing the philosophical ramifications of “cry because it’s over or smile because it happened.”

Right now we are enjoying one of our go-to silly movies, Murder by Death (1976).  Earlier we were watching Forensic Files.  I do love a true crime documentary, but I was reaching manic levels of sick-of-it regarding a song that was playing during a promo of upcoming attractions that played during every commercial break (good song, not even a bad version of it, but you can have too much of a good thing).

Earlier yet, I went Mohawk Valley adventuring with my sister Cheryl.  We went to Fort Plain Antiques and Salvage, and Mohawk Antique Mall.  I brought my Tablet with me but only took one picture.  Still, I could write a blog post giving a proper plug to these two fun shopping destinations.  Speaking of “could write a blog post,” I went running this morning.  Yay, me.  I really need to sit down and write a Running Commentary soon after one of these runs.

I am thinking, however, that right now I am over 200 words and I am going to call this a Wuss-out Wednesday.  What do you want a day after a major holiday?  Miracles, I suppose.  Well, we can always hope for what tomorrow may bring.  Happy Day After Christmas, everyone!

Wuss-out Winesday

Mohawk Valley Girl does not usually plug chain restaurants, preferring the distinctive, locally owned places (although she does talk about herself in the third person, don’t judge), but sometimes the chain place is a fun place to be on a Wednesday night.

But first, a housekeeping note, this is a kind of a Wuss-out Wednesday, because we were supposed to go to Karaoke at Asteroga Ale House in Herkimer tonight (um, in about three and a half hours, but I rather doubt we will change our minds at this point).  I messaged the people we were supposed to go with. One has to work, one has lost his voice, the third was totally into it and asked (showing a flattering knowledge of my blog): what is this, Wuss-out Wednesday?  We agreed to try again next Wednesday (and it will make a good blot post, I hope).

In the meantime, Steven and I needed to eat, and he had not taken anything out of the freezer.  He was willing to go anyplace I suggested, but I suddenly remembered: Winesday at Applebee’s!  The last time we went there (on a Wednesday to get half-price bottles of wine, not just to Applebee’s) was 2015 (we met with friends to discuss casting for Leading Ladies, the play I directed for Ilion Little Theatre)  (good God, has it been that long since I directed?).  I called to make sure the promotion was still in effect.  When the lady answered the phone mentioning “Wine Down Wednesday,” I rejoiced.

The other good thing about Applebee’s for my blogging purposes, is that they do embrace local connections. The walls are decorated with pictures of local sports teams and events.  So I feel it is Mohawk Valley Girl-ish enough to recommend Applebee’s in Herkimer, NY, as a good place to eat.

We had a bottle of LBD (Little Black Dress) Pinot Noir and an order of Neighborhood Nachos.  Yum on both counts.

And this is my blog post.  As a side note: tonight is my Friday, because I am off from now until January 2, 2019.  Woohoo!  Lots of Mohawk Valley Adventures to follow!  Or maybe I will just sit home watching true crime television shows or Christmas movies on DVD or video (yes, we’re old school).  As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.
