Stop Lollygagging and Make a Blog Post!

I had another busy day of doing things that were just not worth blogging about. Then again, it is Lame Post Friday. I’ll just blather on for a while and call it a post. Maybe a silly picture or two to pep things up.

I am usually silly, with or without wine.

I am enjoying a glass of wine as I type. In fact, I am wearing the same shirt, although I am not sporting the same silly grin.

This was my Facebook profile picture for a while.

I have been enjoying a lot of horror movies lately. The above is the inimitable Lionel Barrymore in Devil Doll. It’s a pretty fun movie.

And sometimes I am just piddle puttering.

As I scanned my Media Library, reflecting on what a foolish post this is, the above caught my eye. My sister Cheryl gave it to me. Many agree that it is just the sort of thing I would say.

I like trees.

The above is from March, but I have been noticing how bare trees are looking. Perhaps one day soon I will take a walk and snap a few shots (preview of coming attractions).

In the meantime, I am closing in on 200 words. Happy Friday, everyone!

Beer, Murder, Vote!

So I’m sitting here, idly scrolling down Facebook and half-listening to 20/20 on OWN, and I suddenly think, “Crap! I have to make my blog post!”  In my defense, I have had a lot on my mind today.  Oh, well, we all have our problems. I will sort mine out sooner or later, one way or another.   In the meantime, I think a Throwback Thursday Post will be nice.

Here’s a handsome dude!

This is my husband, Steven, at the Ommengang Brewery in Cooperstown, NY.   We were having some lovely adventures that day.  God willing, we will have more.

Not quite the usual suspects.

I have shared this memory before: A G.R.A.V.E. Murder, one of the interactive murder mysteries we put on to benefit the Herkimer County Historical Society.  I am supposed to be writing a virtual one, for these COVID times, but so far I am not meeting with success.

One of the first selfies I ever took!

This is from November 2018.  We always feel proud of ourselves for voting. This year Steven voted via absentee ballot, which I obtained and delivered for him, while I voted early (perhaps you read my blog post about it).

I think that makes a nice variety of memories.  Maybe I can go about making some new ones tomorrow.  As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

Thank You, Salvatore’s!

I needed a treat this evening, so I took a walk to Salvatore’s Pizzeria and Restaurant in Herkimer, NY.

One of my favorite places.

This picture is from last October, but it doesn’t look a whole lot different. Inside I sat down and perused a menu.

Yum!

I got the Chicken Pesto Panini, which I have never had before. I chose pasta salad for my side, which I have enjoyed many times.

I enjoyed my meal, as usual. And I have leftovers to enjoy tomorrow.

Salvatore’s is located at 650 1/2 German St., Herkimer, NY, phone number 315-866-2600. They are open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday.

Here I Am! I Hope!

I think I found a way to get back to Classic Editor.  I start a post, save it, get out of it, find it under “all posts,” and then I can click on “Classic Editor, ” and here I am!  I do not know if this will continue to work, but I will enjoy it for today at least.

My computer woes continue.  My laptop turns on, but I cannot get it out of Airplane mode.  I thought surely I would be able to, since I have done so before. But even after calling myself Shirley, I failed (get it?  Airplane? Surely/Shirley? Well, I thought I was funny).  Additionally, I can no longer get onto WordPress on my phone.  And there was a picture in it I wanted to use. Rats!

Here I am!

I remembered I had shared the picture to Facebook so downloaded it to my Tablet from there. Phew!  I may catch up with technology at last!

This is a selfie taken after my run yesterday.  I know, I finished my challenge of 34 minutes for 34 days and then take a selfie (remember that?).  I did not even take selfies all 34 days.  I don’t like taking selfies.  But I felt like taking one yesterday. For one reason, it had snowed and I hoped some had stayed on my hat.  No such luck, but I snapped the pic anyways.

I thought I might crash and burn after my 34 days, but I have not quite done that.  My runs have been shorter and not every day, but I am still getting out there.  I may even make a Running Commentary Post again soon.

In the meantime,  I see I am over 250 words.  I think I will call this a Tired Tuesday Post and drive on.  Full disclosure: I actually got a lot done today, but it would probably make a dull post.  I’ll try for a good Mohawk Valley Adventure tomorrow.  As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

Bonita, Can You Help Me Now?

I tried to use this Monday as a New Start. That was because I saw it on a Facebook meme. Just kidding! The fact is, I am always making a new start, at any point in the week or year.

OK, something stupid just happened.  It was me. I am the stupid thing that happened.  I can’t find a good stylus, and I have a split or paper cut in my index finger, so one letter at a time typing is difficult.  I tried switching to the laptop, but I think I may have killed it.  It is poised on my dining room table, the slightest shift a danger.  And I was trying to find out where to stick the flash drive they gave me at Working Solutions.  I did not figure it out.  This could be a problem.

I believe I mentioned before that I was on furlough from my place of employment.  Did I further mention that it has been changed to a layoff?  I don’t mean to bring up my problems, but I just thought I would mention it.  Perhaps my job search gyrations would make an interesting blog post.

In the meantime, I am sitting here with my Tablet, typing with my middle finger, and wishing I had more cheerful things to type about.

It’s Bonita!

I add a photo to pep things up.  Now that Halloween is over, it is time to change Bonita’s outfit.  I wonder if I could find a Pilgrim’s bonnet in her size.

Not Cinema Sunday?

Monday sneaking up on us?

I have never been able to get much done on a Sunday, and most Sundays I don’t even try. It’s a good day to watch movies and do a Sunday Cinema Post. Unfortunately, I have not watched many movies today. However, in the interests of making a blog post, I will share pictures from movies I might have seen.

The above, in case you didn’t know, is Nosferatu, the scariest movie ever. I am sure nobody expects me to stop watching scary movies just because Halloween is over.

I loves me some Bela Lugosi!

I just watched The Bowery at Midnight again recently. I have it on DVD but do not remember where or when I bought it.

Those crazy eyes!

I never thought of The Bad Seed as a Halloween movie, but TCM showed it last night. I did not watch it, though, as it is one we have on DVD and pop in on a regular basis.

It’s trippy.

The Terror is one I have on two separate horror collections. It is not one Steven cares for, so I try to watch it when he is not around. I wrote a blog post about it once.

I see I am just over 200 words. Score! I still have time to watch a movie!

And There Goes Halloween!

This is a Slacker Saturday Post, because I have waited a little too late in the day for any other kind of a post. This is also my Halloween post. I greeted a few trick or treaters, socially distanced, of course. I did not take any pictures, but here is one from last year.

The weather was better this year.

Earlier in the day, my friend Kim and I dressed up and went to Heelpath Brewing Company in Frankfort. They were having a drink special if you were in costume.

We had a fun time.
This is the closest I have to a picture of myself in costume.

Now I have to think about taking my Halloween decorations down and putting my Christmas ones up. Thanksgiving, you say? Don’t worry: when it comes to holidays, I can multi-year!

See, Santa is waiting his turn!

Short Shout-Out on Lame Post Friday

I love this!

Happy Halloween Eve, everyone! Today I took a walk to a new shopping venue in Herkimer, NY, The Emporium. I took a bunch of pictures, because I hope to write an article for Mohawk Valley Living magazine. For today’s Lame Post Friday blog post, however, I will merely say a few words and share the most seasonal pictures I took.

I especially like the glass that says, “Drink up,Witch.”

I love fall.

The Emporium is a vendor market featuring a wide variety of stuff. Antiques, crafts, handmade goods and more. I intend to return and check out the merchandise more thoroughly soon.

They are located at 402 Mohawk St., Herkimer, NY, and are open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, closed Sunday.

Oh, Deer!

Subtitled: Interrupted Run. This morning I started to run at least 34 minutes, to fulfill the penultimate day of my 34 day challenge for diabetes awareness. It did not go well.

I started out in the dark, as I like to do, wearing my road guard vest, along with leggings, long sleeves, and gloves. Things were fine for the first three or four minutes, then I saw a young deer in a yard up ahead of me.

“Hello, deer,” I said but stupidly did not stop. Of course the deer ran way across the road.

And there were cars coming in both directions! One was far enough away, but the other had to slam on his brakes, which he (or she) fortunately did. I saw the deer make it up into another yard and away. The car paused for a minute or two, no doubt making sure of the same thing.

You would think I would be relieved the poor deer had escaped death, but apparently that is how my mind works. I was traumatized by the thought of what might have happened and the knowledge that it would have been my fault. In my defense, I am having a very emotional time these days, for various reasons with which I will not burden you at this time. Additionally, I have long suffered from depression and anxiety.

Be all that as it may, I started having the worst attack of vocal chord dysfunction (VCD) that I have had in a long time. VCD, in case you did not know, is a breathing problem in which muscles in one’s throat tighten in a most uncomfortable fashion. It sounds like an asthma attack, and it feels pretty awful.

So there I stood on the sidewalk, gasping for breath and making the most hideous noises. How I longed for somebody to stop and say, “Are you all right?” Then they would have said something like, “Calm down, it’s all right. Everything is fine.” I kept saying that to myself, but I didn’t believe me. For heavens’ sake, the deer did NOT get hit! What the hell, me?

Eventually I got my breathing under control, but I still wanted to cry. I tried to start running again, but my body did not want to, even less did my mind. Finally I started to walk back home, feeling really stupid but trying to be gentle with myself.

Then I saw the skunk.

This is the second time I have encountered a skunk while walking in the early morning. The first time, the animal was in a stance, legs spread out, hunkered down, looking like he meant business (although it was dark, so perhaps I exaggerate his air of intimidation). This one was just standing there. I sprinted across the street, and he moseyed on in the other direction.

So that was pretty funny. I walked back to my house, took off my road guard vest and put on my sweatshirt, picked up my water bottle, and proceeded to continue my walk till the desired 34 minutes was accomplished.

Diabetes is a serious problem for many. And exercise is a good idea for everybody! I am not nominating anybody, but I am encouraging all my friends and family to challenge themselves! Even if you don’t do the full 34 minutes or days, do some exercise and make a post about it! Let’s all encourage each other to be a little healthier!

About Politics

I was too depressed to make a blog post last night. I thought of making a post about that but was halted by the thought, “My mother will read this!” I do not want her to worry. I know, she will read those too sentences. But I felt I should mention that this post is late and why.

One reason I am quite depressed is the same reason many people are depressed: politics. I try to stay off politics in this blog. For one reason, I try to be upbeat, a booster for the area, as my subheading says, a “totally fun blog.” Politics is rarely fun.

The main reason I dislike talking about politics, and this is perhaps a cowardly reason, is that people who disagree with me will express their opinions, often in a hurtful, disparaging way. Because of my depression, I am likely to interpret arguments as disparaging and hurtful even if they are not meant that way, but these days many people feel free to insult and belittle those that disagree with them.

I am no hand at argument. I cannot think of the right thing to say till well after I have responded, even when I have had time to think about it in the first place. Usually I never come up with the right words. The other side always wins, and my side of the argument is poorly represented. So by expressing my opinion, I am not changing hearts and minds but merely giving the other side a forum for express their opinion.

This raises a couple of thoughts in my mind. First: Isn’t that the point of the First Amendment? Robust argument? Everybody gets a chance to talk? By expressing all ideas we will eventually arrive at the best ideas? This is, of course, the ideal. And I think many in this country have lost sight of that ideal. Many people do not listen to arguments with thought, looking for the truth or what part they might agree with. They are just waiting their turn to talk (if they do not interrupt).

Second, and this is another depressing one: Maybe I always lose the argument because my opinions are wrong. SAY IT AIN’T SO!!! In the first place, I do not believe my opinions are wrong, because they are well thought out, based on by own observation and experience and education. Additionally, my opinions are shared by many people who I respect. There may be places where I could modify my opinions or seek compromise on what I think is he best think to do. I must bear this in mind when I read others’ opinions. That is a timely reminder for me.

I am feeling less depressed as I type this (with ten fingers on the laptop this time, by the way). Just Writing often helps, of course. Additionally, I feel happy to have expressed myself. And if anybody wants to argue my points in the comments, feel free. I know none of my regular readers would express themselves in a hurtful, disparaging way, even if that is the point of the First Amendment.
