No Mo’ No Mow!

I guess it is time to start Lawn Order posts again.  Strange that I never made that a category or at least a tag; it is one of my favorite puns, right up there with, “I fought the lawn, and the lawn won” (I know you sang it; I did).  Full disclosure:  I am going to illustrate this with pictures from my Media Library, because it is really not worth taking pictures of what I accomplished.  Did I win out over the lawn, you are perhaps asking?  I am going to say I did.  At least I acquitted myself well in this skirmish, with some help.

The grass was more grown in.

There was a lot more and longer grass in my front and back yards than in this picture, because I had not mowed yet this year.  Eric Gage of WKTV Weather said it was No Mow May.  At first I thought he said, “No Mo’ May” and we were skipping right to June, but he meant we should let things grow for the sake of pollinators.  I suppose this is all very well for people who are able to start their power mowers.  For those of us who use a non-power mower as a back-up, waiting till almost halfway through the month was not a good plan.

Yesterday (Tuesday) I hauled out the power mower and tried to start it to no avail.  I took the non-power job and tried that.  Oh dear.  I am not a young woman, and I never was a very strong woman.  I gave it up.  I tried again today, this time bringing a little more determination to the endeavor.  Again, there was no starting the power mower.  I took a deep breath and went to work with the other one.  Let me tell you, determination will only get you so far.  I almost gave up three or four times but encouraged myself by what I had accomplished so far.  In point of fact, it did not really look that good: more grass was flattened than cut, but sometimes I have to take what I can get.

Then I heard the blessed sound of somebody else’s power mower.  It was a neighbor across the street who had once offered his help in shoveling snow.  I pulled my mower across the street and asked his help.  A couple of tries and success!  I was on my way!  I got the front done!  I got the back done!  I’m afraid I mowed down some flowers, but you’ll have that. I can always plant new ones if the others don’t come back.

Preview of Coming Attractions.

I did not mow down any daisies.  They are not blooming yet in any case.  After shutting the mower off, I came back out front with some clippers to take care of some really ugly things that keep growing there (I’ll take a picture if they grow back).  My neighbor was sweeping cut grass from his sidewalk.  He asked if it had worked.  I called back that I had finished and thanked him fervently.

“Glad to help out!” he said.

I tried to sweep my cuttings too, but by then I was so tired and sweaty, I did not do a very good job.  I came in and took a second shower and dressed in my second cute outfit of the day (or do I flatter myself). I felt utterly incapable of making a blog post, but I said to myself, “Well, just try.”  I think that worked out almost as well as the lawn, but again, perhaps I flatter myself.

Who, Me? Tired on Tuesday?

Oh dear, it is time to make a blog post again.  What was I thinking to not make a blog post sooner?

I am actually kind of happy it is Tuesday.

I thought I could at least make a Tired Tuesday post.  Full disclosure:  I am not in such good shape to make any post as I like to be.  Earlier today I started to get one of those light-headed migraines I sometimes get.  I went for  a run in hopes of heading it off, with at least some success.  Perhaps it would have been a good idea to make a Running Commentary post when I was done with that, but I needed to complete a story about an Ilion Village Board meeting for Sentinel Media Company.  At least I was successful with that.

A brain! A brain! My kingdom for a brain!

Here is The Brain from the Planet Arous, which I always like to share when I am feeling particularly brain dead, as I am now.

Last weekend I went to several Mohawk Valley businesses, which I would like to give shout-outs to (preview of coming attractions).  For now, I am sorry to say, it is a Tired Tuesday post..  I feel certain my head will feel better tomorrow.  As always, I hope you will stay tuned.

Monday Tribute to Mom

Alas, I broke my streak by not posting yesterday!  In my defense, I was celebrating Mother’s Day AND my Mother’s 85th Birthday with family.  It was a delightful day, but I did not take any pictures.  I think I have at least one of my mother in my Media Library, though.

One of everybody’s favorite couples.

Here are my Mom and Dad at Asteroga Ale House in Herkimer, NY.  We were gathered for a yummy meal with good company. just to give a quick shout-out to a local business.

A mother/daughter pair.

And here is my niece Kimberly with my sister Cheryl, who were present at the time as well as at yesterday’s gathering.

A grandma and her grandson!

Cheryl is also a grandmother.  Here she is with her grandson Sheppy on the Adirondack Railroad, on a trip when they invited me to join them.  I am trying to get them to go on the Richfield Springs Scenic Railway with me sometime.

Another lovely picture.

Speaking of grandparents, here are my Mom and Dad with Jenna, another of Cheryl’s daughters.  This was taken at my sister Diane’s house in Liverpool.  Diane was there yesterday, too.

At Christmas and all year long, we love Mom!

I close with a Christmas tribute to Mom.  My mother did this and did  not even realize it spelled “Mom” till Cheryl accused her of signing her work.  Mom changed it, but we made her change it back and like her to put it up every year.

So a belated Happy Mothers Day to all Moms, including pet moms, step-moms, and those that just love somebody with a mother’s love.  And to be up to date, happy Monday.

Walk Before Work

I went for a walk first thing this morning and took a few pictures, thinking I could make a quick Pedestrian Post before tackling my Saturday.  A little rain was misting down, but I did not let that discourage me.  At first I did not see anything photo-worthy, but crossing the new bridge on German Street, I looked down at the water and said, “Hey.”

It was moving fast.

I realized I had never looked over that side of the bridge, because the old one was blocked off on that side.  I like all the stones.  I continued on German and crossed over to walk by the high school.  I was disappointed to see a couple “No Pets Allowed” signs.  What, if I get a dog, I can’t walk him or her by the high school?  Bummer!

I should have moved a little closer.

On the other side of the school, over the footbridge, is a path into the woods.  I have run or walked on that but feared today it would be too muddy.

I missed it when it was all flowers.

I took a picture of this tree recently.  I wonder if I could find it in my Media Library.

I found it!

I was all excited about the buds, although this is not the best picture of them.  Heck, I am nobody’s photographer, although I call myself a writer with at least some truth (or do I flatter myself?).

Alas, I was not close enough to smell them!

The last picture I took was of some lilacs.  I love lilacs!  I want to get some shoots from my sister Cheryl or my mother and plant some in my yard.  Perhaps it will happen this year.

In the meantime, I have a house to clean and donations to bring to the Elks Lodge for the Veterans.  Do you suppose it would be all right if I had another cup of coffee first?

Lawnmowers and Lame Hopes

One of the quintessential sounds of summer is the sound of a lawnmower.  Personally I could live without it.  It is too loud for me.  That is my random observation for the morning.  I am sitting at my sister Diane’s house, listening to a neighbor being ambitious (mowing the lawn prior to 9 a.m.?  Isn’t there some rule of etiquette about that?), and trying to make a Lame Post Friday blog post.  Quite frankly, I don’t got much, except for a little bit of a headache.

Could it be a preview of coming attractions?

I throw in a picture to pep things up.  This is from May 2017, a “before” shot of my container garden, which I used to have in those days.  I am hoping to have a container garden this year, but this is not the weekend it will happen.  This weekend is about cleaning the inside of my house.  I hope.

This may also be a coming attraction.

Here is a picture from May 2021 at Diane’s house.  It shows me, Diane, our mother, and our sister Vicki.  I am wearing a tie-dye shirt and pearls again today, but different shirt and pearls (my late, beloved husband Steven and I between us wore out that shirt, and I have many pearls) (although I do not clutch them) (but I digress).

Diane and I will be returning to Herkimer this morning, where she will help me in my quest to get rid of things and clean my house.  I am afraid, however, I may be distracted with taking her to some of my favorite places to go for Mohawk Valley Adventures.  I will rationalize such behavior on the grounds that it will make for better blog posts.

I Try to Run After the Rain

I started to go running yesterday with the idea of A. Looking at the flood damage (luckily not too much of a flood around here) and B. Making a Running Commentary Post.  I was only marginally successful. I was to begin with a little surprised it was not still raining.  A glance out the window showed me the street was no longer a river, so I suited up and went out.  I put on my Road Guard Vest (as we Army people call it; civilians call it a reflective vest) in case I went out in the road.  It also has a handy zipper pouch for tissues.

Right away I saw running in the road was ineligible.  It was all mud!  As I ran down the sidewalk, I encountered a lot of mud, too, then a bit of debris, mostly sticks of varying sizes.  The main problem I had was when I got to the corner:  the mud was super concentrated where I wanted to cross the street.  I turned a couple corners where I hadn’t meant to.  Sometimes I ran in the grass to avoid the mud. I don’t mind getting dirty, but I try to avoid falls at my age.

As I turned back onto my own street sooner than envisioned, I saw a cavalcade of two mothers and several children of various ages, some in wagons, on their way to the corner to catch the bus.  I have seen them before.  I almost always greet my neighbors.  Sometimes I accuse the groups waiting for the bus of having a party and not inviting me.  These neighbors were just setting out for the corner.

“It’s the parade!”  I said.  I have called them a parade before. They warned me to watch out for the slippery mud.

I made it across the street and around another corner before I admitted defeat.  I had gone something over 17 minutes (too lazy to go get my Garmin and check), and I just had a failure of resolution.  I turned and walked back towards home, a thing I almost never do.  When I got to the corner, the parade had almost reached the bus stop.  They only had to cross the street.  Some boys already at the bus stop hollered at two girls about to cross to wait, because cars were coming.  We look out for each other in my neighborhood.

I called across to one of the mothers, “I gave up!”

She gestured to one of the girls and said, “She fell down twice!” The girl ruefully displayed her muddy legs.

“Oh NO!” I said, with great sympathy.  I said that falls could be dangerous at my age, to which the mother agreed.  I managed to reach home without mishap.

Some of the May flowers I hope the rain will bring!

No, I did not take a picture of the mud.  However, for the sake of including an illustration, here are a couple peonies and a few daisies from last May.  I guess this wasn’t an April shower, but sometimes one must make do.

Dull Post, Flood Pictures

We got some rain on Tuesday, and I got a little worried by my street.  Not too worried to go out on the porch and take a couple of pictures.

I could have floated a boat! A toy one anyways.

I know other areas had it worse, with some roads completely closed.  However, I had not seen water this deep on my street since the flood of 2013 (I wrote a few blog posts about that).  I have not gone and looked in my basement, which flooded at that time. When I took the above picture, a friend had just given me a ride home, and I wondered if he should really be driving on it.  I should have walked.  It was still raining, but I ain’t sugar; I won’t melt.

At least my trash and recycling containers didn’t float away.

And now everybody knows I do not always neatly put away my trash and recycling bins as soon as they are empty.  Sometimes I wait till Wednesday.  Judge me if  you like.

More rain is on the way, and some roads remain closed.  I wonder how this will impact my adventuring for today.  Then again, I am not supposed to go adventuring today:  I am supposed to be cleaning my house.  Then yet again, I fear this has been a rather dull blog post.  Will a blog post about cleaning be any more interesting? This question will haunt me as I go about my day.

Dinner Today, Donate on Saturday

I got a chance for a good meal I don’t always get a chance for so thought I would make a blog post about it.  Herkimer Elks Lodge offers Comfort Food dinner on the first Monday of the month.  For once I did not have a meeting to cover so thought I would stop on over.

Fun artwork!

The same fellow who  did the artwork for  our murder mystery (which I shared in yesterday’s post) also did a board for Cinco de Mayo.  The main dish tonight was enchilada.  It was delicious!

Other Mondays have featured other dinners.  On another Monday I unexpectedly found myself at the Elks Lodge I got a Chicken Parmesan Dinner to go. YUM!

Alas that I do not have any future menus to share, but I feel sure they will all be delicious.  You can follow Herkimer Elks Lodge on Facebook to see what future Monday menus will be.

You can see other upcoming Elks Lodge events as well.  For example, this Saturday, May 10 they are hosting a box truck to gather donations for Veterans. Have any clothes, bedding, appliances or furniture you are not using?  Come to Herkimer Elks from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. to donate them!

Herkimer Elks Lodge is located at 124 Mary St., Herkimer NY, phone number 315-866-1439.  And as I said, you can follow them on Facebook.

I May Kill Again

Hello and welcome to Wrist to Forehead Sunday, the day when all I want to do is swoon, dramatically posed with the back of one wrist to my forehead, onto a handy chaise lounge.  There is almost never a chaise lounge handy, but one makes do with whatever is available.  One reason for today’s swooning post is that I am dreadfully tired from last night’s performance of Recipe for Murder Royale, the murder we  presented at Herkimer Elks Lodge to benefit Herkimer County Historical Society on Saturday.

I did want to include this delightful artwork.

This chalk art was done by an Elks member who happened to be at the Lodge that afternoon. I’m sure you can easily understand why I just had to take a picture of it.  This member did not attend Saturday’s performance but offered his services as the dead body for a future murder mystery.  He had a great dramatic sense, saying how he would like a blood pack in his chest, which could bleed out as he staggered around, breathing his last.  He even said he could be dragged offstage, leaving a trail of blood in his wake.

Naturally this started me thinking about the next murder mystery.  It is true that I often end these things thinking I can never manage another one, but I don’t think anybody is much impressed by that.  I will get to writing and see what I can come up with by the fall.

Posting Despite Pre-Performance Jitters

For once I was not too lazy to check, and it turns out I did already use the title, “Oh Crap! I Gotta Make a Blog Post!”  I even went back and read it (it was short).  I was about to go to a rehearsal, after being on overtime at work.  Today I am soon to start getting ready to go to a performance.  Regular readers will know it is Recipe for Murder Royale, the murder mystery to benefit Herkimer County Historical Society.  I had all day not only to make a blog post, but to do something to make a blog post about.  Failed on both counts.

Another suspicious bunch I am proud to be a part of.

I threw in a picture to pep things up.  This is the cast picture from when we did the show at Salisbury Grange on Sunday.  The sequins started coming off my dress, so I think I am going to wear something different.  Maybe somebody will take a picture of me that I can share.

As you may guess, I am getting pre-performance jitters, the more so since I am not so confident in my new costume choice.  I don’t know why I should worry.  Probably everybody will say I look nice, even if I don’t really.  I got plenty of compliments on the green number.  Anyways, it is not all about me looking fabulous.  It is all about me killing somebody for fun and non-profit!
