Love That DikinDurt!

I used to make it to all the tastings at Valley Wine and Liquor in Herkimer, NY.  It was a great way to start and to continue the weekend.  These days I am not so consistent, but when a great local producer like DikinDurt Distillery is tasting, I am there!

I arrived early and stood chatting with the guys behind the counter, hastening to get out of the way when I noticed someone wanted to make a purchase.  This is my problem with living alone:  I go all day with only myself to talk to.  This is not easy for an incurably social person such as myself.  I went on to some good conversation with Kayla, who was pouring.

She was really nice.

For hard liquor they are allowed to give you three regular tastes or six itty bitty tastes.  I went for three regular tastes, starting with the bourbon.  I have never been fond of bourbon, but lately at tastings, I have found a few I liked.  I really liked the DikinDurt stuff.  I suppose my tastes are changing in my old age.  That should keep things interesting.  I went on  to the Toasted Maple Moonshine, which I have previously liked quite a bit.  This time it tasted sweet to me.  Kayla pointed out that it doesn’t taste so sweet after the berry-infused flavors.  Quite true, of course.

I ended with Mohawk Valley Fire, and my tasting note is, “Oh yeah!”  I am constantly recommending this to people drinking Fireball.  Kayla recommended mixing it with apple cider and a splash of apple juice for an Apple Pie drink.  I know some people who would love something like that.  For myself, I will probably use it to flavor some iced coffee one afternoon.  I love a glass of iced coffee on a summer afternoon!

Kayla also suggested I visit DikinDurt’s tasting room in Newport, which is open Fridays from 4:30 to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 2 to 9 p.m..  I have been meaning to do this, especially as there are a few other places in Newport that are worth a stop.  I just do so little adventuring on my own these days.  Perhaps it is time to change that.

Lots of Cars at Dave’s!

Tuesday I went to one of the last Cruise-Ins at Dave’s Diner in Schuyler.  Dave’s is closing as of Sept. 1, to the dismay of many, but, hey, folks are allowed to retire!  My late, beloved husband, Steve, and I used to stop there on our way to Rome or Utica, usually for a great breakfast, although their lunches were splendid as well.  Tuesday I had a delicious burger before walking outside to enjoy the cars.

Yes, they stretched for a long line!

I later found out that trophy was the People’s Choice from the first year Dave had the Cruise-In 25 years ago.  The winner has returned to proudly display the trophy every year since.

I LOVE classic cars!

Yes, there were two long rows of cars.

I walked up and down the rows of cars a few times, because more kept arriving.  A couple of the owners said if it had not been so hot, more cars may have shown up.

Back when cars had style!

If I had a car this cool, I would take Bonita for a ride.

A couple of cars had cool passengers.  After getting a shot of the skeleton, I noticed Chucky.

“I’m Chucky, wanna play?”

Then I said, “Oh, you have Tiffany too!”  The lady said, “Of course!”  Of course I took another picture.

The couple that slays together, stays together!

I’m not really a huge fan of the slasher flicks, but my husband and I rented the original Chucky movie (Child’s Play) (on video; that’s how old that is!) and were entertained by it.  Years later I saw Bride of Chucky in a theatre (it may have been second-run) and urged it on Steve.  I just love that Jennifer Tilly!   But I digress.

Two more Tuesdays remain for Dave’s Cruise-In, and two more weeks to get a good meal at Dave’s Diner, 2251 State Rt. 5, Utica, NY, phone number 315-735-4332.

I Do Do a Blog Post

Posted on

Well, this is embarrassing.  I last posted on Sunday, and today is Thursday.  I just didn’t do it.  The opposite of Nike’s famous slogan?  Never mind.  The point is, I felt I couldn’t just quietly start over again with a normal post but wanted to post a kind of I’m sorry for being such a schlub then try to follow up later today with a “real” post.

The winter of my discontent?

I’m calling this a Non-Sequitur Thursday so looked in my Media Library for an unrelated photo.  My deck sure doesn’t look like this these days.  For one reason, it is covered with junk, most of which actually could belong there if I cleaned it up and arranged it in a pleasing fashion.  And of course there is no snow; I suppose if I did not mention that somebody would chime in in a didactic fashion pointing it out (you know who you are).   Will this post be a lament of Things Not Done This Summer?  SAY IT AIN’T SO!!!

“After all, somebody has to clap as I walk by.”

Just to remind myself I did so do stuff this summer, I share one of my favorite rehearsal shots from Four Old Broads on the High Seas, the play I was in at Players of Utica (perhaps you read a few of my blog posts about it).  The fact is, we never do all that we plan or want to.  The point is to enjoy what we do do (teehee: I said doodoo).

And another picture of me!

I know: the picture of plastic poo would have been a good one to share at this point, but I did not feel like searching for it.  Instead I share this fun picture of me before the Pride Stride 5K in Little Falls in June.  I later gave the skirt and wings to my great-niece Evie.  They didn’t really fit me, although I stretched a point for the sake of being a well-dressed runner (see what I did there).

Ooh, look at me, over 300 words.  I have got my blogging mojo back!  All I need is a headline and I am on my way!  That is, my way to more Mohawk Valley Adventures to blog about.  And maybe to clean off my deck.

A Run to the Moon?

Posted on

Oops, I missed posting on Saturday (yes, I am back to calling attention to my deficiencies).  I went for a run this morning, though, so how about a Running Commentary Post.  I don’t know if I ran by anything I have pictures of in my Media Library, but I may throw in a few random shots to pep the post up.  We shall see.

I seem to remember making a post about a run I took after a two week hiatus (that’s a fun word to say; try it!) (too lazy to go back and check, as usual).  Then I went two days without running.  At least I walked.  I was determined to run this morning. After a reheated cup of coffee (waste not want not), I suited up and set off.

The temperature was nice, the humidity was not bad.  I thought to turn right at German Street but noticed the full moon which I had not seen last night.  I love the full moon!  I turned left and ran towards it.

Not the same full moon.

It was lighter out when I ran this morning.  I look forward to starting my runs in the dark and finishing them in full daylight.  I do not rise early enough for such shenanigans these days, but Mother Nature will catch up with me eventually.

I went up one minor hill on Maple Grove and went on to the residential area behind Valley Health, which I refer to in my head as The Suburbs.  I was figuring in my head how long I wanted to run and how I would increase my times to be ready for the East Herkimer Fire Department 5K in October.  I think I will be in pretty good shape (remembering that round and puffy is still a shape).

Running felt pretty darn good.  I had to remind myself not to get too ambitious and overdo.  I pointed out metaphors for life as I ran:  you notice and lament a 10% uphill but barely feel the same percent going down.  Also, a hill looks less intimidating the closer you get to it.  At least it did today.

One weird thing:  as I ran by a sewer grate, I thought I felt a little warmth emanating from it.  Tim Curry?  He was smoking hot in some of his movie roles!  For readers who did not get the reference, Tim Curry was a clown in the sewer in an adaptation of a Stephen King novel.  Or was it a novella or short story?  How embarrassing that I do not know (I even had to check to make sure he spells his name with a “ph”).

I plan to start running more often again so may be inflicting more running commentary posts on my readers.  As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

A Short Walk, A Short Post

Posted on

Oh it is a bad blogging week.  I keep missing days.  There is no point in blaming it on anything, because I have blogged under adverse conditions before.  Today I took a walk, despite being a little concerned about the wildfire smoke, which WKTV Weather tells me will dissipate slowly.  I did not run or walk yesterday, after feeling quite headachey on Wednesday.  Whine, whine whine!  Sorry about that.  But I am sensitive to these atmospheric conditions.  Really, I am quite the delicate flower.  What are you laughing at? (You know who you are.)

Like this tree, I have fallen down on the job.

When I took a walk earlier in the week, I was rather taken by a fallen tree but did not photograph it.  I decided to walk by it again today. I have a kind of a fascination with dead trees.

Another angle.

My plan was not to go for a very long walk.  Maybe one mile; about 20 some minutes.  I do like to walk, and I feel it helps with my depression.

I must up my lawn decoration game.

I had to take a picture of the cute little horse, being careful not to include anything identifying about the house it was in front of.  I try to respect other people’s privacy, although I’m not sure how much of that any of us really has.  I can’t worry about these things when I have a headache.

I did get some blooms!

Returning home, I went into the backyard to get a picture of my Black-Eyed Susans, which managed to bloom after I had mowed them down earlier this summer.

Pretty!

I zoomed in on a few.  I guess this is not such a much as a post, but it wasn’t such a much as a walk either.  However, I enjoyed the walk, and I believe it is possible some readers will enjoy my blog post.  Once again, I thank you for tuning in.

Not Too Far, Not Too Fast, BUT…

Posted on

This morning I ran for the first time in two weeks.  Yay, me!  I had first spent far too much time in bed (symptom of depression) and thought I would take a walk.  I felt too tired to do even that but was willing to give it a try.  Then I decided to try running instead.  It worked!

I had told myself I only had to run for 20 minutes.  That is my usual time when I go to re-start running once again.  I thought perhaps I would manage to go a little further, but starting with a shorter goal helps get me moving.  For the first few blocks, I though I could probably manage 20.  There is a 5K in October I want to do, so I spent a good part of the run figuring how far I should run in order to be ready for that.

This is the one!

Phew!  I have an illustration!  I had been unsuccessfully looking for a picture of one of the streets I ran on.  Perhaps I will go for a walk later with my phone and store up photos for future Running Commentary posts.

My first mile was slow, and I did not complete a second mile.  However, by the end of my run I had reached the I Love Running! stage.  I don’t always hit that stage, although I usually get as far as I Can Rock This.  I wonder if there are scientific terms for these stages.  I managed to keep it up for 26 minutes, which puts me well on track (so to speak) to be in 5K shape by October.

The East Herkimer Fire Department 5K will be run Saturday, Oct. 11, starting at the Department, 193 Main Rd., East Herkimer, NY.  For more information, you can visit their Facebook page.

I Walked; I Didn’t High Tail It

Posted on

Oh dear, once again I did not post on Sunday.  Will I post twice today (Monday) to make up for it?  That would be nice, but no promises.  In the meantime, I took a walk this morning, carrying my phone in hopes of making a Pedestrian P0st with Pictures (Freudian typo:  Poost.  My post is poo?  Also I left the i out of pictures.  I have no “eye” for photography?) (or perhaps I am overthinking it, kind of a hobby of mine).

This is kind of what I look like while I’m walking.

I did not see this on my walk; I took it yesterday at my sister Cheryl’s house.  She was having her annual Lantern Festival, but we also had a cook-out and swam in her pool.  We had a lovely time; Cheryl is really the hostess with the mostest.

Oh deer.

Today’s walk was not such a much.  I saw very little picture-worthy.  I was amazed at some of the overgrowth on some of the porches, houses, and garages, but I didn’t think it was nice to take pictures of those (although it did inspire me for a horror novel I might write).  It was toward the end of my walk I saw the deer.  I wonder if I can ever get a good shot of deer running away.  I like the way their tails flash white, reminding us where we get the expression, “high tail it out of there.”

Maybe I should have zoomed in.

Right after seeing the deer, I saw some pretty flowers along the roadside.  I do not know what they are.  I think there are apps you can get that tell you what flowers are, but I don’t know from apps.  I was headed towards the spring to refill my water bottle.  Must stay hydrated after all.

Pretty!

And here is another shot from Cheryl’s house.  I never quite got a container garden this year.  I bought some plants and put them in pots, but they remain on my messy porch waiting for me to water them.  This is why I like it when it rains.

I guess this is another placeholder post, but at least I was not whining about my depression or other ills.  Oops.  Never mind.  I’ll see what I can do to make the next post memorable.  As always, I thank you for tuning in.

Mid-Slack on Saturday

Posted on

Yesterday I averred that a bad post was better than no post at all.  I hope that is still the case, because my aim is to make a fast post right now and then get on with my day.  Last night I went to see MacBeth at the Theatre at WoodsHill in Sauquoit.  I did not get home till after 11:30, which is way past my bed time.  More disappointingly, I did not take any pictures, because I could have made a good blog post about it.  I may yet do so, without illustrations.  I used to make blog posts without illustrations all the time.  Now I feel wrong if I do not include a picture.  They do pep up the post.

Fun in the sun!

I add a picture to prove my point.  This is my niece Jenna with my parents at a family gathering a couple of years ago.  I am going to a family gathering later today, which is one reason I am so flustered now.  Will I remember to bring everything?  Will I put on sufficient sunscreen?  The latter concern could have lasting repercussions.  I have had some painful sunburns in my day.

I should put my feet up, yes?

I looked for a picture of me at my leisure, to remind myself to chill out already.  Those sandals have broken, and my current pedicure is overgrown, but I may be able to take a similar picture later.  I hope a glass of wine will be included.  Sadly, my husband, part of whose sweatpantsed leg shows, will not.  Perhaps he will be there in spirit.  In any case, I hope to have a fun day.  At least I have made some semblance of a blog post.

Kafka Was Right!

Posted on

Oh dear.  I am sitting at my Chromebook feeling entirely empty.  Lucky for me it is Lame Post Friday.  Is it Friday?  I get a little confused at my age.

Is there an answer even yet?

I looked for a picture in my Media Library to pep things up.  Here is a headline from Aug. 1, 2018, when I used to subscribe to the Utica OD (that stands for Observer-Dispatch, not overdose).  I took a picture, because I found it punny.  I like puns.

Sometimes I am piddle puttering.

This is a plaque my sister Cheryl gave me.  Some time later, a friend shared that saying to my Facebook page, saying it made her think of me.  I confess I have been lolly gagging when it comes to making this blog post.  And now that I am making it, I fear it is not such a much.

Bad writing is still writing, right, Mr. Kafka?

And here is a thought about that:  I have often said that any blog post is better than no blog post at all.  I guess that is another one of My Rules For Me, like my rule of Any Writing Counts.  I have been writing letters, post cards, and journal entries lately.  Will I segue over to more worthy endeavors?  Oh, who can say what is a worthy endeavor anyways?  People like to get letters and post cards.

Sez you!

Regular readers know that when I am out walking or running, I love to enter where it says Do Not Enter.  Thus, to the inner critic who says, “Don’t publish this silly post,” I say, “Hah!”

A Little Posers Is Always Nice

Posted on

Tuesday I was a little bummed to hear that my favorite band, The Posers was playing in Mohawk, NY, because I had a Town Board meeting to cover in Frankfort.  However, I was able to stop by and hear a couple of songs after the meeting.

My pictures are not the best, but they will have to do.

The concert was sponsored by The Village of Mohawk Recreational Committee and took place at Tutty Field, which I had never heard of.  I was easily able to find it, though, thanks to directions on The Posers’ Facebook page.  They even put a sign on the Fishing Access Site post to help (I wish I had taken a picture of that!).

Turn around, Rick!

This was the first picture I took, and my good friend, Rick, the bass player abruptly turned his back!  Not on me, of course; I think he was fiddling with something technical.  I don’t know from band equipment.  I was happy to dance and sing along to the classic rock.

I might as well use all the pictures I took.

I did not stay long, although I could have gotten something to eat from one of the food trucks there.  I bet some of those people on the picnic tables would have been nice enough to let me sit with them.  However, I wanted to get home and start writing my story on the meeting I had been to.  Rick saw me as I was leaving and waved.  I waved back and blew a kiss.  I hope The Posers play soon at a time when I can be there for longer.

As a matter of fact, I heard they were going to be at the Herkimer Downtown Chowdown on Monday, Aug. 11.  Unfortunately I will have an Ilion Village Board meeting to attend.  Perhaps I can stop by again for a short time.  At least enough for a blog post!
