Did Someone Say Beer?

I feel a Non-Sequitur Thursday post brewing in (what’s left of) my brain, but first: a sad (to me, anyways) note:  A Trivial Murder has been postponed till spring, date to be determined.  I had all my lines learned and was working on everybody else’s (it is helpful to know the whole script, so you can help out if the actors get off track) (but that’s a whole other blog post) (then again, why should I worry about getting sidetracked on Non-Sequitur Thursday?).

Where was I?  Ah yes, nowhere.  As usual at these times, I will look for a picture to post.

“Doh! Wrong holiday!”

What could be more non-sequitur than Santa Claus in a Halloween shirt? (That could be a rhetorical question, but if anybody has an answer, feel free to comment below.)  This picture is from last October, but Santa is wearing that shirt now.  Alas, I cannot wear it myself any more, because I have worn it out.  It is riddled with itty bitty holes.  We have not decorated much for our favorite holiday this year.  Perhaps tomorrow or Saturday I will take pictures of what there is (besides Santa) and make a blog post about it.  I’m too lazy to do it now.  Additionally, I have to run soon to a rehearsal for the Haunted Historic Four Corners Tour I mentioned in yesterday’s post.

I need another picture.

Whodunnit? We’ll never tell!

Since I’m feeling a little sad about A Trivial Murder, I’ll share the picture of last October’s A G.R.A.V.E. Murder.  That was a fun one.

“Where have you been all my life, tall, dark and gruesome?”

Just to add one more photo, and to remind myself that it is so Thursday (I’ve had a four day week so get a little confused), I close with this.  Who doesn’t love Frankenstein’s monster with a mermaid? (That one was definitely a rhetorical question.)  I wonder if I have any beer in the fridge…

Stylus Typing on Wuss-out Wednesday

It seems as if I just recently took a Blogger’s Sick Day, but I can’t find the last one by scrolling through my posts.  Then again, if I’m not feeling well, how can I trust my scrolling and looking abilities?  Never mind.  I like to be a daily blogger, so I will attempt to make some semblance of a post.

And that was where my laptop froze up.  Twice.  So now I’m on my Tablet, typing one letter at a time with the stylus.  As usual, I am fascinated by the anticipatory thing.  But it’s no way to write.

Who doesn’t love a cute, cuddley vampire?

I try to pep things up with a picture.  My dear friend Marsha sent me the pot recently.  My husband,  Steven, gave me the vampire in a coffee mug (I think I used a picture of it a day or two ago).

Here he is!

Today I am not a morning, afternoon, or evening person.  But I have another new Halloween picture to share.

I love a business that decorates!

I took this picture at White Rose Bakery in Little Falls, NY.  I was writing a story for Mohawk Valley Living magazine.  I hope they print it.  However, I knew they wouldn’t use this picture,  because the story is for the November issue.

This stylus typing is not for me.  But at least I made some semblance of a post.

Running to Halloween?

I was determined to go running today, and to write a Running Commentary post.  First task completed!  On the the second part…

When I got home from work today, I did not pause and change my mind.  I went upstairs, gathered a load of laundry and put on running clothes. You see, I intended to multi-task by putting clothes in the washer while I ran (and felt pretty virtuous about it, since I am not out of clean underwear, nor is Steven out of clean socks).  I got the washer going, then got going myself.

I started out in the opposite direction of what I usually take, heading towards State Street instead of German.  The reason was that I had noticed a house down the street with Halloween decorations in the front yard.  I need a little Halloween!  I saw another house with a couple of scarecrows by the porch, so that was nice.

It was fine running weather:  not hot, not too sunny.  Of course, I was NOT in fine running shape.  I’m not even sure when I last ran, but I believe it was more than a week ago.  In my defense… OK, I have no defense.  It was stupid of me not to run, or at least get some form of exercise.  What can I say?  We do not always do what is best for ourselves (Oh, I suppose YOU do?).  However, I was happy I was out there moving, and I can continue to get out there on a regular basis.  I hope.

The house did not have as many decorations as some (not as many as MY house is going to have), but it did look nice.  I love Halloween.  I ran past it and turned right onto West Albany Street.  Hmm… which street should I run up?  Not Henry, that was too close. Maybe Caroline and make a BIG rectangle.  Instead I went up Margaret, because I did not feel like running around some cars I saw parked across the sidewalk.  I should perhaps mention that my body was not best pleased with me.  I wondered how long I could keep up even my slow middle-aged shuffle.

Twenty minutes.  I could go 20 minutes.  Oh dear, I wasn’t even at ten.  Never mind.  Just keep going.  I looked at different houses, envied a few screened in porches, admired some late blooming flowers, and calculated how long it was going to take me to get back into 5K shape.  There is a 5K at Cullen’s Pumpkin Farm in October, but that may be too soon.  There are usually a couple of Turkey Trots on Thanksgiving, but I might be busy that day.  Of course I intend to participate in the Reindeer Run in December (perhaps you read my blog post about last year’s event).

As I ran and figured, I started to feel a little better about moving.  Not better enough to go a whole lot more than 20 minutes, but I managed 25.  Then I felt pretty darn tired.  But that hardly matters.  The only other thing I have to do today is make my blog post (what, fold the laundry?  Surely you jest!) (and I will call you Shirley if I want to).  And here I am over 500 words.  Yay me!  Now if only I can make it LESS than a week before I run again.

A Little More Thanksgiving

Let’s  pretend it’s still Thursday,  shall we? I  know some of us are still lounging around, enjoying our turkey (or other) hangovers.  I just said that because I thought it would sound cool.  I have the opposite of a hangover, thank heaven, because my headache is currently in abeyance, knock wood.

So I thought I’d share a few pictures of Steven’s and my Thanksgiving decorations,  while they’re still up.

Aren’t they cute?

This is on the table behind our couch.

He’s my favorite.

We rarely use our dining room table for eating.

The snowman,  regular readers may recall,  was part of our Halloween decor, when he pretended to be a ghost.  The Christmas you water bottles were birthday presents.

You can’t see it, but this is our buffett

The skeletons demonstrate once again our propensity for making Halloween last all year.

We don’t do a lot of shots in those shot glasses; it is merely a fun collection.

Our kitchen window also changes with the seasons.  I can’t believe the fall garland is still with us and in such good shape.  We bought it for a Bad Taste Party we held back in the 1990’s.

One of my better impulse purchases.

I’ve probably shared a picture of this fellow before.  I purchased him earlier in the fall, when he gave me that cute smile in the produce department of Hannaford.  And that makes me remember a few more scarecrows we own that I did not include a picture of.  My bad!  However, I want to get this published, because it is late as it is (also my bad).  Perhaps I can show those decorations later, and make Thanksgiving last a little longer.  Christmas can wait!

Post Halloween Run

Note to self:  Do not take three days off running again.  I have made this note to myself before.  Come to think of it, sometimes the note says a greater number of days, so at least I kept it to three this time.  Oh well, shit happens and we do not always do the right thing, fitness-wise or otherwise.  Judge me if you are so inclined.

This by way of introduction to today’s Running Commentary post.  I guess the Turkey Trot 5K is back off the table, for the main reason that I can’t readily find one nearby.  However, I can easily find the Reindeer Run 5K in Little Falls, NY in December.  I wanted to do that last year but did not have my act together (long story, not very interesting).   That will give me a couple more weeks to build up.  As Fredrick Frankenstein said in Young Frankenstein:  IT! COULD! WORK!

So I felt determined to run today, even if it was raining, which it was when I left work.  It stopped by the time I got home, so I had that going for me.  After putting on my running clothes, I put a load of laundry in the washer, the other un-put-off-able chore of the day, and got going.  It had started sprinkling again, but I’m not sugar; I won’t melt.  My legs felt quite unhappy, but I ignored them.

I dodged around puddles and a few pedestrians, pondering how long I was going to run.  On these mid-week runs, I only require 20 minutes of myself, although I usually run at least a little further.  I ran along German Street and turned down Main, looking for houses that still had Halloween decorations.  I saw a ghoul looking out the door of an enclosed front porch and felt comforted.  A few Jack-o-Lanterns rotting from the inside out leered at me.  I admired a couple extra large ones with smaller ones in their mouths.

I ran a large rectangle and ended up back on German Street.  I heard sirens and saw flashing lights turn on my street.  Yikes!  I was certain I had not left anything on in my house to cause a fire.  I ran by my street to go around another block, just to add a few steps to the run.  I peeked down the street as I passed and saw the police and an ambulance outside the apartment building at the end of the street.   That was another reason to go another block: so as not to run too close and bother the first responders.

My legs had been feeling better but by the end of the run, they were tired again.  You’ll have that at the end of the day, especially at my age.  My run ended up being 27 minutes, three minutes less than I did on Sunday, the same length I was doing last week.  This is good.  I can run 30 on Saturday, up it by 10 percent to 33 on Sunday and stay on track.  I hope I can find my “Dashing” t-shirt for the Reindeer Run (get it?  Dashing through the snow…).

It’s Halloween!!!!!

According to my WordPress dashboard, it is actually Nov. 1, but here on my couch, it is still Oct. 31.  Trick or treating in Herkimer begins in just 24 minutes, that is officially. I fully expect early birds as well as late comers.  For heavens’ sake, who doesn’t like free candy?  Oh, I know, YOU probably don’t.  Fine, all the more for the rest of us.

Um, I don’t expect to get any free candy.  Steven and I will be handing out free candy to kids in costume.  I am looking forward to seeing the costumes.  If only yesterday’s sick headache hadn’t come back, my life would be perfect.  Don’t worry; I’ll wear gloves to hand out the candy, which is wrapped.  I won’t share my germs around.  And if I do give someone my cold, they can’t say I never gave ’em nuthin’.

Steven put this on Facebook earlier with the comment, “I’m waiting!”

This is actually a shot of our front porch last year, but it looks remarkably similar this year.  Next year I want to get some grave stones and a spooky-looking fence for the front yard.  Maybe a pair of glowing eyeballs for the tree, which it pretty monstrous all on its own, I think.

My challenge tonight is to not eat the candy while I’m passing it out.  Well, not eat too much of it.  Oh, how I love Halloween!  I think I will continue my celebration through Thanksgiving at least.  For one reason, I still have plenty of monster movies saved on my DVR.  Maybe I’ll watch a few this weekend and write blog posts about them. Happy Halloween, everyone!

Who Me? Run a 5K?

How about a Sunday Running Commentary to avoid a Wrist to Forehead Sunday later on.  At least, I will avoid a post about one.  As a worker at Monday through Friday employment (most of the time), although I appreciate Friday, I confess to some amount of angst on Sunday.  As I like to say in a philosophical tone of voice, you’ll have that.

I did not run yesterday and thought I might not run today.  For one reason, lots of rain is predicted, and Steven informed me it had already started by 5:30 when he got up to pee (we slept in to an almost unheard of 7 a.m.!).  I grumped downstairs for a cup of coffee on stiff knees and feet (yes, I’m old), feeling contented at the thought of my husband having the day off, too.  After coffee, I was hungry, but Steven wanted to do the dishes before fixing breakfast.  As I was contemplating having a piece of toast to hold me over, I realized it was not currently raining.

“You do the dishes while I go for a short run,” I suggested.  I noted that it was 53 degrees out, so I felt secure that my sinuses would not become irritated (often a concern for me).  I brushed my teeth, washed my face, got into running gear, and got myself going.

I crossed German Street and ran up the steeper side (it is kind of a slanted street), heading for the hill by Valley Health.  As I ran, I thought I would lead my Running Commentary post with the reflection that I was NOT going to run in any kind of 5K on Thanksgiving Day, as I had threatened to do in a recent running post.  To keep on schedule for that, I would have to run for 30 minutes.  I wasn’t going to run for 30 minutes!  I had just taken three days off of running (go ahead and judge me if you like)!  I was probably going to run for 20 minutes and have done.  Maybe 20 plus a few.  At least I was going to do the hill.

It sure took a long time to get to the hill.  This was more of a plod than a run.  Never mind, at least I was doing it.  Maybe my body would feel better as I went.  Only that did not seem likely at the time.  The hill was not fun, but I managed it without having a VCD attack (that is Vocal Chord Dysfunction, a breathing problem I have).  Once I got down the hill, I felt a little better about things.  I could rock this run.  Well, maybe not rock, but at least continue.  Twenty minutes?  Maybe 25.  27, same as I did last weekend.  Oh, just keep running.

I ran up and down a couple of streets, keeping an eye on the time passing and wondering how long I would go.  My legs didn’t feel too bad, but my breathing wasn’t so great.  I concentrated on taking deep, slow breaths, holding each breath in for a second or two before exhaling.  I took note of people’s Halloween decorations, to keep myself in a cheerful frame of mind.  Lots of ghouls, nice.  A few pumpkins.  Oh, one house that had a magnificent display last year was bare.  I think it is a rental property, which would explain things.

My run ended up lasting for 30 minutes.  When I was around 13 minutes I wondered if I would; when I hit 16 minutes it seemed likely, and when I got to 18 I was sure. At the bottom of my street, I saw I was at 27 minutes and picked up the pace, so I would not go over 30 minutes. It felt pretty good running a little faster.  I thought I should do this more often.  Perhaps I will.  And the Turkey Trot 5K?  Still on the table, I guess.

I felt happy as I walked my cool-down around the block.  Now I feel ready to sit my butt on the couch, crochet and watch Halloween movies, yes!  I hope to see you all on Mental Meanderings Monday.  Or perhaps I will have a Monster Movie Monday, just to mix things up a little.   Tune in tomorrow and see!

Ah, Halloween!

In lieu of my usual Wrist to Forehead Sunday, I thought I would share a few pictures of our indoor Halloween decorations.  I think I even managed to photograph the decorations and not the mess surrounding them (don’t judge).  Of course I adore all things Halloween, but it is my husband, Steven, who has the flair for decorating..

It looks even better with the lights on. Maybe I’ll take another picture later.

This is our mantle.  Isn’t it fun?  Some of the pictures stay up year round, but we change the wreath and most of the stuff on the shelf per season. The exceptions are PeeWee Herman and the two ghosts center left (the viewer’s left).  We had a small witch’s hat we put on PeeWee in the past, but I guess Steven couldn’t find it this year.  We have seasonal hats we put on the ghosts at other times of the year.

Maybe this is too busy, but it gives you an idea.

This is our dining room table.  Some of the stuff is new this year.  The snowman in the middle was recently purchased at a garage sale.  Since we let the ghosts on the mantle pretend to be snowmen at Christmas, I decreed that this snowman could pretend to be a ghost now. Yes, I anthropomorphize shamelessly. It is part of my charm.

Yes, that is a wall mural in the background; it was here when we bought the house.

This is the buffet in our dining room.  The jukebox and the skeleton couples are there year round.  Most of the other things sing and dance, if Steven put fresh batteries in them.  For a while we were quite obsessed with these singing/dancing toys and were buying them almost indiscriminately.

Ho! Ho! Ho!

This last picture represents my contribution to the Halloween decor.  The Santa Claus stands there year round.  My Mom bought it for us at a second hand store in Pennsylvania a few years ago.  The shirt is one I got at a thrift store many years ago an have worn faithfully.  Unfortunately, when I went to put it on this year, I could see light coming through a large number of pinholes in its front.  I did not feel secure to wear it under those circumstances, but Santa does not seem to mind.

Oh, how I love Halloween.   I think it is time to finish with the blog posting portion of the day and move on to the Halloween movie watching portion.  Happy Sunday, everyone.

Halloween Pics on Tired Tuesday

It’s Tired Tuesday, and I knew it would be a Tired Tuesday, and I did not one thing all day in any attempt to avoid this being Tired Tuesday.  I even had vague thoughts of going to bed and saying, “To hell with it, I’ll write something stupid tomorrow morning at four!”  Of course, that would entail getting up at four instead of my usual 4:30.  I could always try to post at 4:30, though, couldn’t I?

After Saturday night’s successful murder mystery, I only have two more theatrical commitments, and then I can concentrate on just going to work, coming home, and trying to get my act together.  Hey, that’s just three things, and I don’t think “coming home” even counts as one.  So that’s my plan.  I’m going to get my act together.  Does anybody believe me?  I’m not even sure I believe myself.

The folks at work don’t even believe I’m going to take a break from doing theatre things, but I think I can manage it at least for a month or so.  I wonder how much of my act I can get together in a month.

In the meantime, here I am making a silly and I’m afraid rather boring blog post.  I will add a couple Halloween photos to cheer things up a little.  I’ll just take some from my Media Library (doesn’t that sound fancy?  it is what the website calls it).

She looks so happy!

This lovely lady is from Pumpkin Junction in Sauquoit.  We have not been there yet this year.  We must plan a visit soon!

Ah, if only I stayed on the South Beach Diet long enough, perhaps I could look like this!

This one was taken at Pumpkin Junction.  Now I really want to make another visit there, to see if it is the same or if they have come up with new arrangements.

Another handsome fellow.

This last one is from the So Sweet Candy Cafe in Utica.  This photo was on my Facebook On This Day, so I re-posted it, asking the So Sweet if he was there again this year.  He is! Another visit I must plan.

That’s two things I can write better blog posts about!  Happy Tuesday, everyone!

Meandering around the Marketplace

This picture didn’t turn out as clear as I had hoped.

I have driven by this old barn on Route 5 between Herkimer and Little Falls many times.  I guess it has always been an antique place, but I had never caught it when it was open.  Well, it has opened again as The Old Barn Marketplace, and I have been there twice.  Saturday I took a few pictures of Halloween stuff I thought I would share, in the spirit of the season.

Numerous vendors offer a variety of goods: furniture, collectibles, antiques, vintage clothing, artwork and more.  There is also a cafe, where I enjoyed a cup of coffee before I took a walk around.  The first thing that caught my eye was a delightful skeleton.

I gotta love a skeleton in a tie.

A larger group of Halloween stuff resided near the counter.  I tried to get a shot of the whole thing but don’t know how successful I was.

A fellow behind the counter was a little worried he’d gotten in the shot.

Apart from the Halloween stuff, The Old Barn Marketplace is a fascinating place.  I walked all around the first and second floors before discovering that here is also stuff in the basement.  I guess I should have taken more pictures.  In fact, the whole place deserves a better write-up than I seem to be giving it.  In my defense, it is Monday, the day I usually just Mentally Meander.  I can always write more about the Marketplace later.

The Old Barn Marketplace is located at 6266 State Rt. 5, Little Falls, NY, phone number 315-508-5254.  They are open every day from 10 .m. to 5 p.m. For more information, you can visit their Facebook page.
