Feet and Friends on Non-Sequitur Thursday

Well, after making yesterday’s wuss-out post this morning, I did not run out and have any Mohawk Valley adventures to write about, so I will make this a Throw Back Thursday, with Non-Sequitur overtones.

Not my usual footgear, but sometimes it works for me.

This is a picture from last June, but it is similar to what I wore on my feet today.  I tore up my toes on the bottom of my sister’s pool yesterday afternoon, so I slathered on some antibiotic ointment and covered them up.  I still went running.  Um, not with socks like these.  I made sure I found a good pair of running socks and wore my best running shoes. But I’m not writing a Running Commentary, so let’s see what else I can throw back to.

I wasn’t in this scene.

Last July I was in rehearsals for The Tempest with LiFT, Little Falls’ Theatre Company.  It seems odd not doing Shakespeare this summer, but I don’t know that I could have handled it anyways.  As you may have noticed by my continued foolish blog posts, I am not having a good summer.  But let me not whine about my petty problems but find another picture in my Media Library (you know how I love my Media Library)

A toast to good friends!

Another good memory of last summer was a delightful lunch Steven and I had with our friends Jim and Phyllis at Gerber’s 1933 Tavern in Utica.  What could be better than find times with friends?

One of my favorite spots.

The 1933 Tavern made me think of the 1834 Jail in Herkimer, located on the Historic Four Corners.  I run by these corners on many of my runs.  But, once again, I am not making a Running Commentary post.  Happy Thursday, everyone.

I’m in a Cheesy Play!

Yesterday I went to a rehearsal for the play I was unexpectedly asked to take part in:  Where’s the Cheesecake?  by Angela Harris.

Angela Harris, a resident of Little Falls, NY, also wrote Strike Story, the incredibly well-researched reader’s theatre play which gave LiFT, Little Falls Theatre Company, its start.  I got to participate in that production when a cast member could not make certain performances.  Perhaps you read a few of my blog posts about it.  Harris has also written several short plays about the ongoing adventures of Mac Blac, “Little Falls’ only professional problem solver.”  I saw one of the plays three years ago, at the Little Falls Cheese Festival.  I probably wrote a blog post about that too.  At least, I hope I did.  When I was asked to take a part in the latest adventure, I jumped at the chance!

This episode is done as a radio play.  We stand up and speak into microphones. Sound effects of doors closing and chairs moving help set the scene.  Oscar Stivala, as The Man with the Horn adds atmosphere. I loves me some Oscar Stivala!

The play takes place right before the Little Falls Cheese Festival and, obviously, involves a cheesecake.  More than that I will not say, because I do not want to give away any salient plot points.  I will say it is very mysterious and a lot of fun.

It’ll be more dramatic when we’re in costume.

Where’s the Cheesecake? will be presented on Saturday, July 14 at 11:30 a.m. at The Shop, 590 E. Main St., Little Falls,  as part of the Little Falls Cheese Festival.  The Cheese Festival is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Main Street.  Come buy some cheese and see a play!

Non-Sequitur Theatrical Throwbacks

It often happens that I take a blogger’s sick day with a foolish post only to feel worse the next day.  Seriously, I have had a headache (sinus? migraine? tension?  who knows!) since this morning.  It was not bad enough to necessitate my leaving work, so I had that going for me.  I got home and managed to get one chore done, now I need to make my blog post before doing a couple of other things I really, really want to have done.

What a boring lead paragraph!  You would not think I was an experienced daily blogger, would you?  Then again, how do I know what anybody else thinks? I shall not pursue this train of thought, however, because I fear it would lead to half-baked philosophy, which is the purview of Lame Post Friday.  This is Non-Sequitur Thursday, no matter what the time stamp says (sometimes these things are dated a day off, and I am not technologically savvy enough to fix it).

Well, I need to post something, headache or no, so I think I will go for a Throw-back Thursday theme by posting a couple of pictures from my Media Library.

To be, or not to… Oh, wait, wrong play.

When I was looking for photos the other day, I saw the pictures from the LiFT, Little Falls Theatre Company, production of The Tempest last summer.  Alas, I fear that will be no Shakespeare play this summer, but I hope for great things next year.  The above is a full cast shot from the Utica Zoo, a great venue where we had one performance.  We performed in several different places.

Another great theatre memory!

Since this is Non-Sequitur as well as Throw-back Thursday, I jump to spring of 2016 and Leading Ladies at Ilion Little Theatre.  I’m not in this picture, because I directed, but my husband, Steven, is the handsome if uptight-looking guy in the suit jacket, far left.

I just can’t believe what he’s telling me to say.

OK, one of me and Steven.  This is spring of — eeek 2012!  We were Dr. Chumley and Veda in Harvey at Ilion Little Theatre.  This was what Steven referred to as “our big scene.”  I am on the phone with Elwood P. Dowd, and Dr. Chumley just told me to tell Elwood that Harvey is in the bathtub.  I can’t believe he dared say the word “bathtub” to me after what I went through that morning!  That will may sense to anybody who knows the play, or who has seen the movie.

Well, that did not turn out to be too bad a post.  Or do I flatter myself? No matter.  I posted something, and now I can lie down and wait for my headache to go away.  Happy Thursday, everybody.

Silly Wizard Saturday

It’s that awkward moment on a Saturday when I want to make my blog post before Steven gets home, but I really don’t know what to write about.  I have not done enough to fulfill a true Scattered Saturday post.  I feel I cannot do justice to the one cool thing I did today, but I suppose I could try.

I dressed as a wizard and went to the Mohawk Valley March for Babies fundraiser for the March of Dimes and Mohawk Valley Community College.

I really did not need to ding her with the wand; she is already enchanting.

This is the chair of the event, me, and two other members of LiFT, Little Falls Theatre Company, also dressed up to add to the festivities.  The Power Ranger was the hit of the day, with several kids offering high fives and asking for pictures.

Who could be scared of a big green Power Ranger with Mom around?

A few of the kids were put off by the mask, but mostly they loved him.  I am the one that made a couple of kids cry, although I tried to keep my distance when I saw they were leery of me.  For heavens’ sake, I came dressed as a wizard not a witch, and I thought I was a SILLY wizard (because I always say, go with your strengths).  No matter, many people were amused by me.  I walked around waving my wand and danced to the music when possible.

At one point, a gentleman asked me and Kim what characters we were.  I said, “I am Cinn-da-ba the Wizard of Odd!  And this is Princess… Naratilovna.”  I had to repeat the name.  “It’s Russian,” I explained.  “But she is not Princess of Russia, but of an obscure little country north of Siberia.”  I could not come up with more on the spur of the moment.  Then I confessed that I had made up both characters but perhaps I would write a story featuring them.

So now I have a story to write.  And I can barely manage a blog post! No matter; I am over 300 words and I have given a brief plug to the March of Dimes and the Mohawk Valley March for Babies.  This is a worthy cause, because, you know, babies.  And I’m sure the ones I made cry have gotten over it by now.

A Wizard for the March of Dimes?

When I said I was taking a break from theatre, I did not mean I was taking a break from putting on costumes and acting up.  I just meant no real plays.  With that in mind, nobody needs to shake their finger at me (or their head or their booty) when they hear that I am, along with other members of LiFT Theatre Company, participating in Mohawk Valley March for Babies this Saturday, May 19.

The Walk spreads awareness of prematurity, birth defects, and infant loss.  Walkers support the March of Dimes, which strives to give every baby a fighting chance.  Full disclosure:  I don’t know a whole lot about the March of Dimes, but it is a cause near and dear to the heart of a dear friend, Laura Powers.  She is chair for the event.  When she asked for volunteers to dress in costumes and interact with people, to add to the festive atmosphere, I jumped at the chance.  Dress in a costume and act silly?  Right up my alley!  And for such a good cause, talk about a win/win!

Now to figure out what kind of costume to wear…  Naturally, I have many costume pieces in my attic, from my theatrical endeavors as well as my Halloween high jinks.  When I suggested a wizard to Laura, she liked the idea.  First I had to search my attic for my wizard hat and black-and-gold caftan.  At first I could not find them, but I found a purple graduation gown, which I had purchased at a rummage sale.   At the time, I had some idea of being the one-eyed, one-horned flying purple people eater for Halloween, but I haven’t done that yet.  Still, if I couldn’t find the caftan, I could do something with a purple gown.  Hmmm…. Then I found the hat — and the caftan!  Score!  I brought everything downstairs.

I made Steven take my picture for use in this blog post.

“I cast a spell on you!”

When I saw that the hat was not on straight, I asked Steven to take another picture.

I went for a less wizard-y post this time.

I tried on the graduation gown for good measure, but I think the caftan is the way to go.

I tried for another wizard-y pose.

I grabbed the feathery thing off our telephone table. I think it is a relic of some long-ago flower arrangement.  I shall try to come up with a better wand by Saturday.  I shall also decide on a pair of shoes.  Or at least I’ll paint my toenails.

Mohawk Valley March for Babies is this Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mohawk Valley Community College, 1101 Sherman Dr., Utica, NY.  For more information, you can check out the Facebook event.

Looking for a New Throwback on Non-Sequitur Thursday

So last week I did a Throw Back Thursday with Non-Sequitur overtones.  Then I realized I had used the same photos together in a previous post.  I suppose these things happen, but I hope to avoid such a thing today.  I am posting in haste (posthaste is a word you don’t here much these days, but I like it).  I have rehearsal for Spring Into Murder later, and I am doing laundry now.  You know, that murder mystery we are doing at Morning Star Methodist Church on Saturday, April 28.  I wonder if any tickets are still available.  I should share the Facebook event again, in case local readers are interested (see what I did there?).

“I don’t always do Shakespeare plays, but when I do, it’s with LiFT.”

This is Tucker just before a performance of The Tempest last summer with LiFT, Little Falls Theatre Company.  Tucker is in Spring Into Murder as the trophy husband of Holland Mills, CEO of Two Lips Cosmetics.

“Whoooo says Cindy can’t write a blog post?”

This cute little owl caught my eye.  As I type this, I see part of the title of the book he’s sitting on:  I Hated, Hated, HATED This Movie! by Roger Ebert.  I just love reading unflattering reviews, although I disagree with Ebert on some of his assessments.

Here’s to hasty blog posts!

I end with a shot of Steven and me doing what we do best:  hanging out and having a good old time!  My sister, Cheryl, took this picture at Woodland Farm Brewery in Utica, NY.

Well, three pictures and over 250 words, I call that good enough for a pre-rehearsal post.  I hope to see you all on Lame Post Friday!

I’m Just Getting to the Good Part

OK, time for a fast Scattered Saturday post before I get back to enjoying my Saturday.  Full disclosure:  It has not been such a great Saturday for the most part — entirely my fault, but please don’t judge.  Oh, all right, go ahead and judge.  Shake your head, or your finger, or your booty at me.  Tell me I’m a worthless human being!  Call me out for whining!  Even — good heavens, not that! — stop reading my blog!

Got that out of my system.  Regular readers cannot be surprised if I become a trifle, shall we say, dramatic.  I am in the midst of putting together an interactive murder mystery dinner theatre (I am responsible for the theatre, not the dinner), and I am in the midst of writing another one.  By the time that’s finished, it may be time to audition for the summer Shakespeare production with LiFT, Little Falls’ theatre company.  I am so ready to speak forsoothly again!

Be all that as it may, I am getting to the good part of my Saturday, but I will give a quick overview of what went before.  My wonderful husband, Steven, and I were able to sleep in a bit, because he did not have to be to work till eleven.  I found some postcards I thought I had already sent so had a good selection to pick from for my weekly postcard writing activity.  The main problem I have with the postcards is that I get tired of writing them after three or four, and there are more people I would like to send them to.  I thought I might write more later in the day but have yet to do any such thing.

When Steven went to work, I drove to the post office to mail the above mentioned cards, then when to Cliff’s Local Market (formerly Nice-n-Easy) to use the ATM.  From there I drove into Ilion to Cornerstone Consignment, where they were having a sale.  I need a fabulous dress for Secrets at Suiter House, my upcoming murder mystery, and I would like a 1920’s-ish dress, in case I find an occasion to wear one in the near future.  As it happened, I found a couple of dresses that might have worked, but I just could not work up the oomph to try them on.  Fairly disgusted with myself, I went home.

At home, I managed to do a couple of chores (too boring to mention) and studied my murder mystery lines for a while.  Eventually it was time to walk to Asteroga Ale House, where I had plans to meet Steven when he got off work.  That was a nice little walk, and a nice interlude at the Ale House.  I may write a full blog post about that in the near future.

In the meantime, I am over 450 words.  I call that quite respectable for a Scattered Saturday.  As I mentioned earlier, I am getting to a very enjoyable part of the evening:  sweats on, bra off (don’t you DARE say TMI!), glass of wine to hand, and true crime show on TV.  Once I pick up my crochet, my life will be perfect.  Happy Saturday, all!

A Prohibition on Bald Dogs? It’s Non-Sequitur Thursday!

While I am stealing others’ ideas for my blog posts, I thought I might try for a Throwback Thursday today.  After all, I had fun making my Wordless Wednesday post.  Why not stick with it?  I think I have some pictures of the past in my Media Library.  If I mix them up a little, maybe this can be a Non-Sequitur Thursday as well.

When your cute little dog wants to take over your yarn basket for a bed, you let him.

First I strike a melancholy note with a picture of our dear, departed Spunky.  I was just thinking about Spunky earlier today.  Once when a four-year-old girl met him, she called him “Skunky.”  As a matter of fact, he was not the nicest smelling pooch ever, but we loved him.  Now I am feeling sad, so I will find a picture of a different sort.

Now there’s a nefarious bunch!

Here is the cast for Rubbed Out at Ruby’s, the interactive murder mystery that LiFT Theatre Company put on at the Overlook Mansion in Little Falls last February.  It was set in the 1920’s. I was just thinking this morning that I am having a kind of a craving for more 1920’s.  I want to find a new ’20’s outfit, dress up in it and go somewhere.  Maybe just to a party or a prohibition theme night at a bar (I went to one of those once).  I wonder if I still have that picture…

The real hottie on the left is my friend, Kim. I’m wearing the tiara and the red boa.

I’ll tell you what I really miss is my short hair!  I want to do another St. Baldrick’s Day event and shave it all off again.  I just love the look of hair growing back from bald.  I think it looks so sophisticated.

I just love doing a St. Baldrick’s Day.

I last did a St. Baldrick’s Day event in the spring of 2016.  I think I’m due for another one.  My only problem is, I hate asking people for money.  I know it’s not for me, but it’s still money they might prefer to spend on something else.  Well, I am not currently signed up for one, so I do not have to worry about it yet.  I’ll keep you posted, by writing a blog post about it, of course.

Foolishness Part Two

I have been looking forward to making this post since I signed off on my last one.  Here are pictures from July through December 2017.

“I don’t always do Shakespeare plays…”

I was going to choose Nosferatu but decided on my friend Tucker looking like the Most Interesting Man in the World.  He is in costume for The Tempest, LiFT’s Summer Shakespeare production, a wonderful theatre experience for all involved.

“I could do a Shakespeare play.”

OK, here is Nosferatu.  I couldn’t leave him out, could I?  This is the shot in which I thought the background looks like the Little Falls Antique Center, which LiFT rehearses and performs in front of.  So the pictures kind of relate, right?

It was the first annual, and I was there!

This being a kind of a Year in Review, I include something about running.  I ran the Boilermaker 15K in Utica in July, then I ran the East Herkimer Fire Department 5K in October (although this photo was under September in my Media Library), AND I did the Reindeer Run 5K in Little Falls in December.  Full disclosure:  I have not been running since.  But I mean to take it up again soon.  No doubt I will make blog posts about it.

He looks quite delighted to be there, doesn’t he?

Here is a Halloween-y photo and a plug to a local business:  The Old Barn Marketplace on Route 5, Little Falls.  I wrote about them for Mohawk Valley Living magazine.  I shall no doubt go there again and write a blog post about it.

Gotta love me some Joan Crawford.

Here’s a shot from I Saw What You Did, a William Castle movie Steven got me for my birthday in November.  I just loves me a cheesy horror movie with Joan Crawford.

It was a fun day!

I thought I would end with a picture from the Reindeer Run 5K, which I mentioned earlier.  It was a fun run on a fun day.

And this has been a fun post to make.  Happy New Year, everybody, and let’s have a great 2018.

I Need a Little Monster

Sometimes I just need monsters.  Yes, it is Lame Post Friday, and I am about to post lame.  Traditionally I use Lame Post Friday for random observations and half-baked philosophy, but today I just want to share pictures of monsters.  Perhaps I could randomly observe or half-bakedly philosophize about them.

Ah, Nosferatu, my favorite guy.

Under the heading Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, I thought I would use stuff from my Media Library (I feel so sophisticated, having a Media Library).  I wanted to use this shot because, in addition to being my beloved Nosferatu, the building in the background reminds me of the one that houses Little Falls Antiques Center, as seen from the area where LiFT Theatre Company rehearses for our summer Shakespeare plays.  Wouldn’t that be awesome, if Nosferatu could join our little community theatre group?  Daytime performances might be a problem, but perhaps we could overcome the difficulty somehow.

“To be or not to — oh wait, wrong play!”

Here is an early rehearsal for The Tempest, last summer’s offering (note the presence of scripts).  You can see the building in the background.  Now don’t go saying stuff like, “Those buildings don’t look anything alike!”  You know I hate it when people are so didactic!

I don’t imagine I’ll be doing much howling myself tonight.

I close with a picture that mentions Friday, as I am currently celebrating Lame Post Friday.  I hope you enjoyed today’s lame post.  Have a lovely beginning of your weekend.
