Non Sequitur Stroll

I decided to take a walk with my phone (instead of my Tablet) for today’s Pedestrian Post.  Yes, it is the second post in a week of me taking a walk and snapping pictures.  That is why I am calling this a Non-Sequitur Thursday Post.

This tree previously had ghouls and skeletons hanging from it.

As I walked down German Street, I was a little sad to walk by a yard which had been very decorated for Halloween.  All that was left was a few brave yellow leaves!  So I took a picture.

A few more brave leaves.

Turning down North Washington Street, I tried to get a shot of a tree with leaves and a bare tree behind it.  I really love trees: green leaves, colored leaves, no leaves.

A bush by a bank, just to get alliterative.

I walked by my beloved Herkimer Historic Four Corners but did not see another photo op till I walked down Main Street the red bush caught my eye.  Then I took a picture of bare branches in front of colored leaves in front of Basloe Library, another favorite spot.

Yes, it is still fall.

I headed over to Prospect Street and on to Meyers Park, where I knew there was still one pretty tree.

I got this shot on Park Avenue.

I had noticed this guy on my walk to the post office this morning.

This little tree caught my eye as I left the park.

As I got closer to home, I took a picture of a tree near my house.  It is one of my all time favorite trees.

I need to get a better shot of this one.

It was a pleasant walk.  I am taking more walks than usual these days.  I think it is good for me.  I hope it is good for the blog as well!

Pedestrian Post with a Patriotic Purpose

I begin my journey

I walked up to Herkimer College to vote this afternoon. I counted it as my 34 (or more) minutes for diabetes awareness. Additionally, I took some pictures along the way for a blog post. Who says I can’t multi-task? (OK, I am usually the one to say it.)

I think they are miniature sunflowers.

I took a picture of these flowers, because they brightened my day.

It seems steeper in person.

I ran up this hill just the other day. I like walking up hills, although you can get too much of a good thing.

When they said “Do Not Enter,” did they mean me?

I walked up the back way, which is not as steep. The road is open to authorized vehicles only, but I think it is OK for pedestrians. And, as regular readers know, I love to enter when it says not to.

A lovely fall path.
Once again, it seems steeper in person than in the picture.

I had the idea that Early Voting was in the building right at the top of the back way. I soon found I was wrong.

Apparently I did not research the matter sufficiently.

It had only taken me about 20 minutes to walk thus far, so I was happy to continue my walk.

This was about halfway between the other building and my destination.

When I reached the gym, I worried I had overshot my target.

Rats!

I quickly saw some others signs which told me where to go. While I was taking a picture of this sign, a lady called to me from her car window that I was supposed to go around the back.

This way, Cindy!
Dis is de place.
And just in case I missed it.

There were no lines, no waiting in the gym. When I came out, a couple was trying to take a selfie by the sign. I said that was a good idea; I should do that. The lady offered to take my picture, then asked me to take theirs.

Yes, I look silly. Did you expect less?

I walked a different way back, by the dormitories. I paused to take a couple more pictures.

The view would be prettier on a sunny day.
I used the handrail, in case the wood was slippery when wet.

It took me just over an hour altogether. The beauty part was that I did not get rained on. It had been raining most of the day and began again shortly after I got home.

I was delighted to have discharged my civic duty for the year, and I encourage all my readers to do the same, if you have not already done so.

Don’t Run, Walk!

I walked instead of running for my 34 minutes for diabetes (see previous post). I brought my cell phone to take pictures. It seemed about to rain, and I figured the phone was easier stashed in my pocket for protection.

Love the bright trees against the dark sky.

I walked towards the dark clouds. I questioned the wisdom of my choice but could not resist a grey sky.

Another view.

I walked down German Street, going the way I most often run. My only plan was to keep going for 34 minutes, taking pictures along the way.

I have always admired this horsy.
I could have just kept taking pictures.

I rationalized taking so many pictures with the thought that some might not come out. It was getting darker out. Full disclosure: I used all I took.

Approaching Lou Ambers Drive.

I debated whether I wanted to cross German Street. In the meantime, I admired the old brick building.

I zoomed in on the building.

I decided I would cross German and go up Lou Ambers Drive to take a picture of the hill up to Herkimer College. I didn’t have a fall view of it.

Where I ran earlier this week.

I continued over into the residential area, another favorite running place of mine. I soon came to the exit of the parking lot for Valley Health. Regular readers know, I love to enter where it says not to.

I can never resist being a rebel.

It was continuing to get darker, and starting to rain. As I approached the building, I thought I saw some fall decorations but was not sure till I got up close.

So cute!
He invited me to have a seat.

Crossing back over German, I walked toward the high school for some pictures of the stream.

I like the rocks.
Another view.
I have a thing for dead trees.
I took this one on the other side of the little bridge.

As I continued my walk, it started to rain in earnest. It was too dark to take any more pictures anyways. I enjoyed my walk. I only have nine more days of my 34!

Two Walks, One Picture, Don’t Judge

In fact, I expect some people will judge me whether I give them permission or not.

I hope the picture conveys the astonishing color.

I brought my Tablet on both walks, hoping to take a few pictures for a fun post. However, before I got any photo ops on the first walk, it started to pour rain. As I am not sugar (you may have noticed), I am in no danger of melting. However, devices are notoriously averse to liquids.

On my second walk, to the post office to mail a letter, some color caught my eye. I went a few steps out of my way to take the picture.

This is rather short and insubstantial, even for a Tired Tuesday Post. But I shall let it stand and hope that tomorrow I can come up with something better than a Wuss-out Wednesday Post. As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

More Than a Walk in the Park

I did something different today and took a hike through Russell Park in Ilion, NY. Oh, OK, it was more of a walk, but it was over a trail with changes in elevation, rough patches, and even a little mud. In other words, it was an effort beyond that cliche, a walk in the park.

My companions in this adventure were my sister Cheryl and niece Jenna. They do quite a bit of hiking in various parks around the area. I always think I am OK to go for a trail walk because of all the running I do. I confess that sometimes on a run or, more often on my cool-down walk, I say to myself, “My legs are magnificent instruments of propulsion!” Well, let me just say I do not need to feel so pleased with myself.

We liked the snaky looking branches.

I did not take a lot of pictures. We were wishing there were some longer views, especially with the fall foliage reaching peak.

Another angle of the snaky branches.

There are quite a few trails in Russell Park. We were on the Horseshoe Trail, I think. We had to choose which fork to take a couple of times. We saw a bridge we considered crossing, but I felt what we could see of the trail beyond it looked iffy. Cheryl went down for a photo op.

My sisters and I all have a good sense of drama.

We ended up at the Soccer Field and followed the road back to where we had parked. We looked at the trail map, which I stupidly did not get a picture of. We talked about where we might walk next time but decided not to follow any other trails today.

It was a lot of fun. In addition to a challenging walk, we had a great visit with a lot of laughs. I hope to tag along on more of Cheryl and Jenna’s hikes.

A Walk By The Corners

Today I agreed to run a couple of errands for my husband, Steven.  I decided to walk to do the second one, carrying my Tablet for blogging purposes.  Never mind what the errand was; there is no point in advertising my husband’s vices.

Any time I walk or run, I am happy when I can go by Herkimer Historic Four Corners, and so it was today.

I love old gravestones.

The first corner I encountered was Herkimer Reformed Church.  I love the graveyard that surrounds the church so took a couple of pictures of it.

The front of the church.

Before I crossed the street, I took a shot of the Herkimer County Courthouse.

A majestic building.

Once across the street, I took a picture of the Suiter House of  Herkimer County Historical Society.

Must visit there again soon.

There was a person in the vehicle you see.  I called, “I was taking a picture of the building, not you!”  The fellow smiled and waved.  I tried to get a picture of the 1834 Jail, but it did not turn out very well.  Perhaps I can find a previous picture to share.

Temporary home of Chester Gilette and Roxalana Druse, among others.

After enjoying the four corners, I continued down Main Street.  I did not take any more pictures, but here is an older shot of Christ Episcopal Church, which I also walked by.

A lovely building.

It was a pleasant walk, and I quickly accomplished my errand.  I may or may not have stopped by the End Zone Pub and Grub for a beer (speaking of vices) but did not take a picture.  In any case, I avoided making a Tired Tuesday Post.  I hope to see you all on Wednesday, whatever it turns out to be.

Running Off Frustrations

I needed to go running this afternoon.  For one reason, I did not run Tuesday or Wednesday,  and my run on Monday was short (I counted my gardening on Tuesday as exercise, since I spent a goodly amount of time walking around carrying rocks) (no, I have no excuse for Wednesday,  judge me if you must).  Where was I?  Ah yes, running off my frustrations, or rather making a blog post about how I attempted to do so.

It does not matter why I was frustrated; it is, in fact, the least interesting part of the story.  Suffice it to say, I felt that some time spent beating up my body would do me good.  So I changed into running gear, threw a load of laundry into the washing machine, and took off.

I had great hopes for this run, because my back was feeling much better than it did on Monday.  However, once I started running, my legs started to feel awful.  Well, that’s what I get for taking days off, I told myself.  Just keep going.

So I did.  The sun was warmer than I prefer, and soon sweat was seeping into my eyes.  Ouch!  Wasn’t that head band helping at all?  Apparently not. I moved my glasses to wipe with my hands or my sleeves.  Don’t touch your face, you advise?  Good luck with that!

I got to smell one lilac bush and one patch of peonies, plus another peony on my cool-down walk.  I had managed to run for a mere 20 minutes, with a 10 minute cool-down walk.  Better than Monday, not as good as I had hoped.  As far as my rotten mood, I guess it helped.  A glass of chocolate milk (my usual recovery beverage) (it’s science, you know!), a cool shower, and a glass of wine (In that order) also helped.

Finishing a 300-word blog post is pretty good too.  And tomorrow is Lame Post Friday!  As always, I hope you’ll tune in.

Where Is Nosferatu?

I felt so happy when I realized I could make a Mid-Week Monsters Post today.  I am feeling so tired, and not for any good reason, but I do so love to be a daily blogger.  I also love monsters.

“Aaaaah! A monstrous mid-week!”

I open with my favorite,  Nosferatu.  I love this shot of him, because I think it looks like Canal Place in Little Falls.  Perhaps in reality it does not, but how awesome would that be if Count Orlock joined LiFT, Little Falls Theatre Company?

Are we monsters? Or do we just play them on stage?

Here is a shot of the building I think Nosferatu is standing in front of.   It was taken at a rehearsal for The Tempest three years ago (yikes!  Has it really been that long?).  I’m the one in the middle, with the big hat.  I can’t remember who took the picture.

Hmmm, no. These windows are different.

This is not a monster, but I think it is quite possibly haunted.  It is the Lorraine Billings School in Herkimer, NY, a sadly derelict building.  I noticed it while searching my Media Library for more monsters.  I wondered if the windows were similar to those in picture number one.

“Hey, wasn’t this post supposed to be about me?”

Back to Nosferatu, and I do not believe I have any other pictures of such an arch.  Perhaps that could be a mission for me on a future walk:  to find a similar local setting for a future Monster Blog Post.  In the meantime,  I am over 250 words.  I call that OK, and I hope my readers were reasonably entertained.

Aches and Pains, but Flowers!

I need all the help I can get!

I found a four leaf clover on the cool down walk after a recent run.  I open with it, because as I sat down to make my blog post, a voice in my head said, “Good luck with that!”

As I worked today, I thought that after work, I could go for a run, mow the lawn, or take a walk, and write a blog post about whichever I picked.  As I pondered my choices, I had to weigh which would wreak the least havoc on my back.  Hey, I’m middle-aged and overweight: I get back pain.  Returning to work after an extended break has caused some pain (YES, I am grateful I have a job!  We have been through this!  Sheesh!).

I apologize for complaining.  The fact is, most of us at work have been having more than the usual aches and pains.  I may philosophize about possible causes on Lame Post Friday (half bakedly of course) (ooh, here’s an autocorrect I’m glad I noticed: the computer put “nakedly” instead of “bakedly”).  For today, I decided a gentle walk would be my best choice.

I got about two houses down the street when my knees started in.  What the hell, me?  I turned around, thinking I could at least take some pictures at my own house.  First I crossed the street to take a picture of the lilac bush in front of a neighbor’s house.

How have I never noticed this before?

Returning to my house, I took some shots of the front yard.

And a few dandelions.

I am so into forget-me-nots this year, and it seems Mother Nature is as well.  I see them everywhere.

I did not get to the tulips at their peak.

We had two tulips, but I did not get any pictures when they were at their prettiest.

A wider view.

This is a kind of a preview of coming attractions,  because the peonies and daisies are not blooming yet.

I see I am over 300 words, so I think I will save my back yard shots for a future post. I will try not to spend so much time blathering about my aches and pains!

Flower Walk Part Two

In lieu of my usual Lame Post Friday,  I shall share the pictures from the second part of yesterday’s walk.  I had walked to the post office, donning a mask to go in and purchase stamps (flags for bill paying, flowers for personal).  I took a long way home.  It seemed to take a while to find another photo op.

I just can’t get enough flowering trees.

This is on the path over what used to be a hydraulic canal,  a favorite spot for me to walk or run, as regular readers know.  Further up the path, I saw some chalk art.

This was one I had no idea what it looked like when I took it.

That caption is an awkwardly constructed sentence.  Never mind. The sentiment expressed in the chalk art is a good one.  I continued onto German Street.  Since there is less traffic these days, I had no problem crossing the street for the next photo op.

Yay, seniors!

I see these signs all over, sometimes accompanied by one with a picture of the graduate.  I think it’s a great way to make things a little special for the kids who had their senior year cut short.

Rats, you can’t hardly read the sign.

Further down German, I saw the opportunity to plug a local business.  I wonder if I could persuade Steven to spend a night in a B&B not too far from home, just for something different.  I went back across the street to get a shot of the house.

I could have gotten a better shot from the middle of the street, but traffic was not that sparse.

Back home, I took a picture of some of my yard work, where I had cleared some space where the peonies are growing.

I hope for more pictures as spring progresses.

I also took one of some forget-me-nots.  These previously grew out back under the rhododendron but are now inexplicably out front.  I guess I do not properly understand flowers.

Pretty!

I like doing these pedestrian posts with pictures.  I hope for more walking weather next week.
