Some Prettiness to Brighten the Morning

I take a break from recounting my own sweaty efforts (was it getting a bit old? I feared so) to share some of the pretty things that have been happening with no effort on my part.  I love it when that happens.

Pretty and impressive as well as pretty impressive, I think.

The rhododendron (is that how you spell it?  It did not show up on my predictive text thingy as I hoped it would) was here when we moved in.  The only thing I’ve ever done for it was to use my foot to break off some dead branches several years ago (my goodness, we have been in this house for fourteen years.  How the time flies once you reach middle age).  When I was running yesterday, I kept seeing large rhododendron and thinking they put mine to shame.  Then I got home and found it wasn’t so.  Good plant!

I liked it so much, I’m sharing two pictures.

I took two shots to make sure I got the forget me nots underneath.   They have always been there but only recently appeared in the front lawn.  I figured I might as well get a picture of them too.

I love these.

Now that I look at the picture,  I see an unknown bud.  I’m guessing daisy but will try to keep an eye on it to see if I’m right.

Speaking of daisies…

I think you are not supposed to allow things to continue to grow in between the sidewalk cracks, but how can I resist such pettiness?  Then too, I flash on Jeff Goldblum in the first Jurassic Park movie saying,  “Life will find a way.”  Of course it is a scary foreshadowing when he says it, but out of context,  I find it comforting.  Is that a case of reduce, reuse, recycle?  Let’s pretend it is.

So you may have noticed I did not make two posts yesterday so am two posts behind.  These things happen, at least to me.  It is early Sunday morning as I type this, so many things can happen, blogwise.  I await events.

Lots of Questions in This One

So there I was, a closed garage door, a sick husband,  and an overgrown lawn.   Did I mention my husband was ailing?  Do I need to mention that this is the second part of Thursday’s post?  Do I need to apologize that I am making it early Saturday morning instead of on Friday? Have I asked enough questions for one paragraph?

Where was I?  (Oops,  another question.)  Ah yes, in front of the garage door.   That’s right,  I decided to have a go at it all by myself.  And what do you know, I succeeded.  Oh, I guess you already knew that, since I talked about getting lawn work done.

So I started with the manual push mower and the front lawn.  For one reason, the front lawn is the one everybody sees.  Oh, don’t tell me not to care what other people think!  It is more pleasant for everyone to see a well-kept lawn instead of a weed jungle,  and I am all about making life just a little bit better in any way I can.

I found that by going over the same little patch six to ten times, I could make a difference.   Phew!  Am I ever glad our front lawn is tiny!  Additionally,  I could skip the patches where the daisies, lilies of the valley (Lilies of the Mohawk Valley?) (just had to throw that in), and — new this year — forget me nots had taken over.

Still, it took me over 40 minutes (I kept looking at my watch, because I promised myself I wouldn’t spend more than an hour on it; it was a holiday, after all). I was sweaty and tired!  I opened a beer, which I felt was the proper beverage for the situation,  and sat down on the back deck.

This gave me a nice view of our overgrown back lawn.  Damn.  I knew my work was not done.  There was no way I could duplicate my efforts out front on our backyard.   It is a normal-sized lawn for our house and neighborhood,  but in terms of labouring behind a manual mower over grass that length,  it seemed vast.  I hauled out the power mower, checked the oil, and added gas.

Then I proved to myself once again that I cannot start that motor by myself.  I just can’t pull that cord with enough force.  What to do?  Finally I knocked on our neighbors’ door.  We don’t really know them, but say hello when we see each other.  They are a nice young couple, with two kids and a dog (I would like to pet the dog, of course, but he does not seem interested in me).

The nice young man came out and started my mower with one pull.  Woo-hoo! This was much better!   Some places — actually many places — still required more than one pass.  Also, it took some effort from my middle-aged body of meager muscles to push the mower over our uneven ground.  But I did it!  I felt like much woman, as my sister Vicki would say.

OK, I set out three days ago to write about Thursday’s efforts.  I am now two posts in, and I am still on Monday.  On the brighter side,  it has been many, many words since I have whined about not being able to write a blog post. I think that calls for a “Yay, me!”

In the meantime,  I am over 550 words.  I generally don’t go in for long blog posts, so I will end this one here.  Will I ever tell about Thursday’s lawn efforts?   Or will I go back to whining about my inability to blog?  Will I post later today or remain two posts behind?  A little suspense adds interest to my Saturday.

Spoiler Alert: This One’s a Two-Parter

When I was huffing and puffing behind the manual lawn mower earlier, I thought I might get a blog post out of it.  Now I am not so sure.  Did I tell you what I did on Monday to feel like much woman?  For once I can’t be too lazy to go back and check.

Ah.  I said I made great efforts in yard work but did not specify.  Let’s see, can I make a long story short and do I even want to try?  We had not mowed our lawn yet this year,  and with all the rain it was getting a little embarrassing.  The reason (or the lame excuse,  if you are being judgemental) (you know who you are) was that our garage door is so difficult to open. It has always been a toughie, but last year the spring broke and, damn.

We tried putting an appeal out on Facebook, hoping a muscular friend or two could help us out.  Of course everybody was busy on the holiday.  Well we have limited days we are both available and it is not raining.

Obviously I cannot make a long story short, and that is too bad, because even I am getting bored with this one.  And I have the damnedest feeling I have told it before.  Listen, I checked one past post, I cannot, will not go around looking through… Oh, well, I guess it is only two more.  Silly me.

OK, I checked (answered a couple of comments while I was at it).  I’m good, haven’t told the story in this space.  However, it is getting to be a long story and I am tired.  I think I’ll make it a two parter. This part ends with me sitting in my house, considering my overgrown lawn and my stubborn garage door.  I guess you know how it ends, because of that line about great efforts in yard work, but there are a couple of twists along the way (or do I flatter myself? ).  I hope you’ll stay tuned.

The Joy of Ten Finger Typing

Typing with ten fingers is the BOMB!  Or is the proper expression “da BOMB”?  Well, it is the only bomb I have going for myself so far, because typing before coffee is not so great, and typing in fear my laptop is going to click off is pretty sad.  Why, oh why, did I not purchase a battery when the fellow at that store which I will NOT plug wrote down what I needed?  But there is no point in lamenting the past.  On with the present late post!

Is this a late Wuss-out Wednesday or an early Non-Sequitur Thursday?  It is only the latter if I fail to make a post later in the day.  No promises, as I often say.  Yesterday was not a horrible day, but I ended it with a backache and a headache and a disinclination to do anything at all.  Actually, I had a pleasant evening watching a couple of crime shows we had DVR’d with my husband Steven.  I also crocheted an afghan.  The shows were Dateline and 48 Hours, if anybody was wondering.  Tonight is 20/20 night on OWN, so I have plans for later.

In the meantime, what to talk about now?  As I took my shower earlier, I was feeling down yet thinking I ought not to make another blog post about it.  For one reason, my mother reads this blog, and I don’t want her to worry.  More importantly, it’s getting old.  I can say that now, because the joy of ten-finger typing has me up again!

And over 250 words.  Score!  And thank you, laptop, for cooperating!  Happy Wednesday/Thursday, everyone!

Tired, Lazy, and Still One Post Behind

Oh dear.  I do not want to be two posts behind again (when, oh when will I make up that post? ), but, once AGAIN,  I got nuthin’.  At least I can liven up my Tired Tuesday post with a few pictures,  since I did not have Monstrous Monday.

Skinny guys don’t scare me that much.

I’m on my Tablet, so I can’t get any new pictures (surely regular readers are used to my technical ineptitude) (and my habit of calling them Shirley).  I tried to at least find some I have not used recently or very often.  The above may not have been the best choice, I mean as far as being different.  Since House on Haunted Hill is one of my all-time favorites,  it seems I would have used this picture a lot.  But, you guessed it, I’m too lazy to go back and check.

“Well, you see, boss, it was like this…”

Here’s one I know I haven’t overused:  George Zucco and an unknown friend.  At least I hope it’s George Zucco.  You know how you say a name and suddenly it doesn’t sound right?   It’s not just that I’m too lazy; it’s not as easy to open a new tab and check these things on the Tablet.   Oh, OK, I’m too lazy.

I’d like an outfit like that.

I know I haven’t overused this one.  I don’t even remember what movie it is from, although I ought to.  Maybe one of my readers knows and will tell me in a comment.  Was that a broad hint that I like it when people comment?  Could be.

Not Much of a Run, Not Much of a Post, Happy Memorial Day

I ran this morning, wearing my ARMY t-shirt so I could run in honor of our fallen veterans.  I thought I might make a blog post about it. Just now I thought I couldn’t,  but let’s give it a try.

I knew it was warm.  For one reason, I didn’t get out till 7 a.m.  However,  that meant I had some coffee before running.   That sometimes helps.  It helped today.

In previous runs to honor fallen soldiers,  I ran up to the Veterans Memorial at Herkimer College.   I was not up to that today.  Still, I thought I should make an extra effort.  I decided the hill by Valley Health would suffice.  I’m sure a greater effort would have been a greater tribute,  but one does what one can.

I actually felt it was a pretty good run.   I went for 30 minutes,  which was up ten percent  from last week (full disclosure: I ran for 30 minutes yesterday).  I stopped and petted two nice dogs.

While we’re being honest (referencing that full disclosure in the previous parenthetical comment)  it is becoming evening and I have been drinking since before noon.  In my defense,  I put in great efforts in yard work.  I don’t know that I achieved great results,  but is that really the important thing?

Is not the important thing that I have made a blog post on the third day of a three day weekend?   It has not been a Monstrous Monday and it hasn’t been a Running Commentary post.   But it has been a post.

You can judge me if you are so inclined.   As always,  I try for a better post tomorrow.   I hope you are all having a delightful Memorial Day weekend.

Billy Wilder, Can You Help Me Now?

I thought of making another Running Commentary post,  but that was much earlier today, while I was actually running.  Going for a run was about the extent of my usefulness for the day.  Well what do people expect out of me on a Sunday, anyways?  Regular readers know I often spend the day looking for a chaise lounge to swoon upon, dramatically posed with the back of my wrist against my forehead (hence the feature Wrist to Forehead Sunday).

Speaking of dramatic poses…

I shall attempt to peel my wrist off my forehead long enough for a Sunday Cinema post.   Earlier we watched Sunset Boulevard,  with Gloria Swanson and William Holden.  It was directed by Billy Wilder.  I suggested we continue the Billy Wilder theme with Double Indemnity.

They are an unsavory pair in this flick.

There are Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck.  Edward G. Robinson plays a supporting role,  my favorite character in the picture.

Steven wanted to take a break from movie watching, so I have a little time to ponder our next cinematic feature.

Classic.

We could continue the Billy Wilder theme but on a lighter note with Some Like It Hot.

Two of my favorites.

Another Billy Wilder movie we love is Witness For The Prosecution.

I haven’t reached my breaking point yet.

Or we could forget Billy Wilder and movies, and just watch Snapped.

A Run to Start my Day

How about a Saturday Running Commentary to start the day?  Well, technically it does not start my day, because I had to run, then I showered and did a couple more chores… but you know what I mean (didn’t call you Shirley that time).

Full disclosure:  I had meant to be running in Liverpool this morning, from my sister Diane’s house.  But I did not have my act together to get packed and make the drive last night.  Did I mention that in last night’s post?  I’m too lazy to go back and check.  Uh, I mean I am too pressed for time.  Yeah, let’s go with the second one.

In a rare move for me, I got dressed and out running before coffee and a chance to change my mind.  I put on shorts and short sleeves before even checking the temperature.  It was 51 F, so that was OK (45 is my arbitrary and sometimes ignored cut-off for long sleeves and leggings).  It was foggy out, or “froggy” as my husband, Steven likes to call it.  He likes frogs.  I wished I was up to running up the hill to Herkimer College (formerly known as HCCC), to get a really good view of it.  Then again, the view from up there is prettier without the fog, and I am NOT up to running that hill (at least, I might make it up out of sheer stubbornness, but I sure wouldn’t feel good afterwards).  Anyways, I could see plenty of fog just looking down the street.

I turned right onto German Street.  The air felt cool on my ears and hands, but I felt secure in my wardrobe choices.  I crossed Main Street, since there was not much traffic that early, and decided to turn down the path over what used to be a hydraulic canal.  I want to walk down it with my great-nephew Sheppie sometime, because somebody painted places with certain steps:  march, jump, crab-crawl.  We used to call it crab-walk in my younger days.  It was my favorite, but I am not sure I would encourage anybody to do it on blacktop.  We used to do it in the grass.

My previous longest run was 27 minutes last Sunday (in this latest bout of getting back into running).  My runs during the week were shorter, after working all day.  Since I am not currently building up for a specific race, I decided not to worry if this was a short run.  For one reason, I was getting thirsty.  That is one advantage of pausing for coffee: I also drink water.  I just kept encouraging myself to keep going, bearing in mind that a nice bottle of water awaited me at my house.

The run ended up lasting 28 minutes. Woohoo!  I never got any of those endorphins, which quite frankly I could have used.  However, as usual, I felt good that I ran.  And now I feel good that I made a blog post.  On with the weekend!
