Silly Wizard Saturday

It’s that awkward moment on a Saturday when I want to make my blog post before Steven gets home, but I really don’t know what to write about.  I have not done enough to fulfill a true Scattered Saturday post.  I feel I cannot do justice to the one cool thing I did today, but I suppose I could try.

I dressed as a wizard and went to the Mohawk Valley March for Babies fundraiser for the March of Dimes and Mohawk Valley Community College.

I really did not need to ding her with the wand; she is already enchanting.

This is the chair of the event, me, and two other members of LiFT, Little Falls Theatre Company, also dressed up to add to the festivities.  The Power Ranger was the hit of the day, with several kids offering high fives and asking for pictures.

Who could be scared of a big green Power Ranger with Mom around?

A few of the kids were put off by the mask, but mostly they loved him.  I am the one that made a couple of kids cry, although I tried to keep my distance when I saw they were leery of me.  For heavens’ sake, I came dressed as a wizard not a witch, and I thought I was a SILLY wizard (because I always say, go with your strengths).  No matter, many people were amused by me.  I walked around waving my wand and danced to the music when possible.

At one point, a gentleman asked me and Kim what characters we were.  I said, “I am Cinn-da-ba the Wizard of Odd!  And this is Princess… Naratilovna.”  I had to repeat the name.  “It’s Russian,” I explained.  “But she is not Princess of Russia, but of an obscure little country north of Siberia.”  I could not come up with more on the spur of the moment.  Then I confessed that I had made up both characters but perhaps I would write a story featuring them.

So now I have a story to write.  And I can barely manage a blog post! No matter; I am over 300 words and I have given a brief plug to the March of Dimes and the Mohawk Valley March for Babies.  This is a worthy cause, because, you know, babies.  And I’m sure the ones I made cry have gotten over it by now.

Not Running Commentary

I was not going to run today.  I was going to mow the lawn.  Since I am unable to start the power mower, this would mean pushing the manual up and down the yard many times.  I thought that would be great exercise. I put a load of laundry in, so I could multi-task.  I put some sunscreen on my arms, found my crazy old lady hat, got myself a bottle of water, and out I went.  This was going to be great!

And I’m sure it would have been.  If only I was strong enough to open the damn garage door!  Now, this door has always been tough to open.  I have usually been able to manage it one heft at a time.  Well, today, I would heft it, then as I was positioning myself for another HEAVE, back down it would come.  Hard!  I mean, it felt as if something was inside the garage actively pushing that door back down on me.  Perhaps I am being fanciful, but I was frankly unable to open that door.

Then I couldn’t even relieve my frustration by slamming the house door as I went back inside, because it is hanging crookedly on its hinges.  The screws loosen up over time.  Tightening them is better done as a two-person job: one to hold the door, one to tighten the screws, and Steven and I never seem to remember to do it when we are both home.  So that I could at least get something done, I grabbed the screwdrivers (I need both Phillips-head and flat) and got the hinges somewhat tightened.  Then I didn’t feel like slamming the door any more.

I sulked around on the computer while the washing machine ran.  I wasn’t just screwing around; I had to contact my theatre friends about Saturday’s endeavor (perhaps you read my blog post about it).  I knew I should try to get something useful done, but I felt too annoyed about the garage door.  It does not take much to knock the ambition right out of me; judge me if you must.  Before I knew it, it was time to put the laundry in the drier.  I took the few things that didn’t go in the drier upstairs to put on the wooden rack.  I figured I might as well take my shower.

So there I was, ready to turn on the shower and feeling pretty useless and pathetic, when I thought, “Oh hell, why don’t I just run?”  So I did.  I thought I would make a Running Commentary blog post.  However, when I sat down at my computer and began to type, this is what came out.  Go figure!  I think I’ll call it a Non-Sequitur Thursday post and drive on.  I hope to see you all tomorrow, when Mohawk Valley Girl says, “Welcome to another Lame Post Friday!”  Or words to that effect.

Going Italian at Asteroga

So I started running again Monday, did zippo on Tuesday, and was determined to do something today.  I told my husband, Steven, that I could go for a run by myself or he could go for a walk with me.  Being a nice husband, he said he would go for a walk with me.  It was quite sunny when I got home from work, so I first took a shower and put on a cool outfit. By this time, Steven was quite hungry and wanted to end out for pizza.  I felt pizza was too fattening and I really wanted to walk.  We compromised by walking to Asteroga Ale House for food.

It was quiet in the place as we walked in, and we got a seat at the bar.  Surprisingly, there were two people we knew sitting at the bar too, so we had a nice visit while we ate.  We both got a glass of Chardonnay and looked at menus.  Steven decided on a bowl of Italian Wedding Soup while I got an Italian Chicken Wrap sandwich.  Yummy!  While we ate, we talked about frozen vs. fresh meatballs and chicken broth.  I contended that fresh made was better but pre-made could do in a pinch.  We also discussed shoes, the mall, and work.  I do like to have a nice conversation with dinner.

It was not even too late as we walked home, getting a little more exercise.  I know, we would have gotten more exercise without the stop at the Ale House.  One can’t have everything after all.  And I am going to consider this a pretty good blog post for a Wuss-out Wednesday.

Asteroga Ale House is located at 122 W. Albany St., Herkimer, NY, phone number 315-219-5578.  You can Like them on Facebook.

A Wizard for the March of Dimes?

When I said I was taking a break from theatre, I did not mean I was taking a break from putting on costumes and acting up.  I just meant no real plays.  With that in mind, nobody needs to shake their finger at me (or their head or their booty) when they hear that I am, along with other members of LiFT Theatre Company, participating in Mohawk Valley March for Babies this Saturday, May 19.

The Walk spreads awareness of prematurity, birth defects, and infant loss.  Walkers support the March of Dimes, which strives to give every baby a fighting chance.  Full disclosure:  I don’t know a whole lot about the March of Dimes, but it is a cause near and dear to the heart of a dear friend, Laura Powers.  She is chair for the event.  When she asked for volunteers to dress in costumes and interact with people, to add to the festive atmosphere, I jumped at the chance.  Dress in a costume and act silly?  Right up my alley!  And for such a good cause, talk about a win/win!

Now to figure out what kind of costume to wear…  Naturally, I have many costume pieces in my attic, from my theatrical endeavors as well as my Halloween high jinks.  When I suggested a wizard to Laura, she liked the idea.  First I had to search my attic for my wizard hat and black-and-gold caftan.  At first I could not find them, but I found a purple graduation gown, which I had purchased at a rummage sale.   At the time, I had some idea of being the one-eyed, one-horned flying purple people eater for Halloween, but I haven’t done that yet.  Still, if I couldn’t find the caftan, I could do something with a purple gown.  Hmmm…. Then I found the hat — and the caftan!  Score!  I brought everything downstairs.

I made Steven take my picture for use in this blog post.

“I cast a spell on you!”

When I saw that the hat was not on straight, I asked Steven to take another picture.

I went for a less wizard-y post this time.

I tried on the graduation gown for good measure, but I think the caftan is the way to go.

I tried for another wizard-y pose.

I grabbed the feathery thing off our telephone table. I think it is a relic of some long-ago flower arrangement.  I shall try to come up with a better wand by Saturday.  I shall also decide on a pair of shoes.  Or at least I’ll paint my toenails.

Mohawk Valley March for Babies is this Saturday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mohawk Valley Community College, 1101 Sherman Dr., Utica, NY.  For more information, you can check out the Facebook event.

It’s Monday Running Commentary!

So I ambitiously went running, thinking I could do a Monday Running Commentary for a change.  Then as I started cooking dinner, I thought maybe a cooking post.  Of course, a part of me always wants a Monstrous Monday, even when it isn’t Monday.  Then again, I have not been running in a while.  I think I’ll comment on it.

I have really fallen off the exercise wagon lately, much to my own detriment.  At my age, I need to stay active or I may stop moving entirely!  I did go for a nice walk on Saturday, so I have not been completely sedentary.  I took comfort in that and made my plans.  It was such  beautiful day, I preferred to do something outside than go to the YMCA.  I told myself, walk or run, but do SOMETHING!

As I got ready to go running, I realized I need to invest in some more sports bras (PLEASE do not tell me TMI!).  My supply is getting kind of old.  I found a couple to wear, though, as well as bicycle shorts, running socks and a loose-fitting t-shirt.  I remembered where my running shoes ended up.  This was going to be great!  I got together a load of laundry to throw in while I ran, just to be extra ambitious, especially for a Monday.

It was with a little frisson of virtue, therefore, that I started out.  Unfortunately, it was not long before my legs said, “Oh, crap.”  This was not going to be fun.  However, as I have often noted, if I have learned one thing, it is how to persevere.  After all, one must get through the crappy runs in order to get to the good ones.  I could at least enjoy the sunshine.

I could not enjoy the sunshine.  But I sternly warned myself against dwelling on my misery and kept going.  Seeing flowers and looking for shade distracted me somewhat. Some people were sitting out enjoying the day.  I even saw a sunbather, stretched out on a lounge chair, face down.  I was reminded of Hercule Poirot’s observation in Evil Under the Sun, about sunbathers looking remarkably alike.  Oh dear, he put it much better than that.   I don’t know where I put my copy of that book, and I really don’t want to take the time to look for it now.  Read the book yourself, if you like murder mysteries.

Anyways, I managed to run for 22 minutes (my favorite number!).  As is often the case, my cool-down walk was my favorite part.  I think my least favorite part is this blog post about it.  I’m sorry, folks, it’s Monday, and I have to finish cooking dinner.  I hope to see you all tomorrow, on Tired Tuesday.

Scattered Sunday follows Scattered Saturday

My fun weekend continues and I hurry to make Sunday’s post before I reach the Wrist to Forehead portion of the day (you know, as Monday becomes more imminent) (and, please, don’t any of you point out that Monday has been imminent since last Tuesday, I have no interest in pursuing any pedantic arguments this morning).

Steven got up early for work, but I lazily stayed in bed another hour or so and got up feeling much more rested than I had expected.  Tracy slept in even later and got up after Steven had left for work.  We decided to go out for breakfast.  After some discussion of our options, we chose The Knight Spot in Frankfort, NY.  They were quite busy, but we had a yummy breakfast of an omelet (Tracy) and sausage on a hard roll (me).

I was driving, so we took a more circuitous route out of Frankfort.  That way I could point out various businesses and landmarks I thought Tracy would be interested in.  We also stopped by the S.S. Maria Addolorata Prayer Garden on Sheldon Avenue.  I have been to the prayer garden before and even written about it for Mohawk Valley Living magazine.  With our late spring, however, I wondered what shape it was in right now.  It is lovely.  We walked through and admired it.  I must remember it as a spot to go and sit when I am feeling particularly stressed.

Back home, we stopped at a couple of nearby garage sales, enjoying a very nice chat with a couple of neighbors.  I purchased an old thermos.  I have another old thermos which I love, because it keeps coffee really hot for a very long time.  I feel certain the one I bought today is old enough to be equally efficient.

Now we are merely awaiting Steven’s return from work (it is a short day for him).  He may want to check out the garage sales, too.  We may also go for ice cream.  It’s a beautiful day, and we are having a great weekend.  Happy Sunday, everyone.

Mid-Adventure Scattered Saturday Post

Just time to make a Scattered Saturday post before I am off on more adventures!  I slept in till a leisurely 6:30 a.m. and had an equally leisurely morning.  My one bit of ambition was to write a few post cards and walk to the post office and mail them.  As usual, I walked a long way home to get more exercise.  It was a nice walk, and I considered making a Pedestrian Post to get my blog done earlier in the day.  Unfortunately, I had waited too long for the walk and did not have time.

Steven’s and my good friend, Tracy, arrived around Steven’s lunch time.  After I got him back to work (I dropped him off, because we intend to pick him up later), Tracy and I visited for a while then took off on some Mohawk Valley Adventures!

We started at Valley Wine and Liquor’s, for a tasting of wines from Thousand Islands Winery, which incidentally, is near where Tracy lives.  We had a nice chat with the young man pouring as well as sipping a little wine.  I was delighted to hear that the liquor store will begin carrying my favorite Thousand Island wine, Cabernet Sauvignon,  next week.  I was also interested to hear the winery is coming out with a dry red blend soon.  I’ll be looking for that!

Next, Tracy and I went to Little Falls, where we made several stops:  Prima Donna’s Boutique, Mohawk Valley Center for the Arts, Rochette, Little Falls Antique Center, and Huckleberry Letterpress.  We had lots of nice chats and saw lots of nice merchandise.  I found myself mysteriously not in a mood to buy anything, but Tracy made a few purchases.

Back in Herkimer, we were feeling peckish so went to PK’s Pub, where we both had yummy salads.  Tracy had a slice of homemade Peanut Butter Pie for dessert, but I managed to behave myself.  For now.  No promises for later.

Keeping one eye on the time and the other on my word count, I think I must end this post now.  We have further adventures to enjoy!  I hope everybody’s Saturday is going as well.

I’ll Be Lame for the Concert!

I pause in my gyrations of trying to get ready for An Evening with America to make a Flustered Friday post. If I have time.  I may start it now and finish it after the concert.  I am pausing not so much because I am dedicated to making my blog post right this minute (I AM dedicated to making my post, of course, just not necessarily right this minute), but for the sake of sitting in front of a fan and cooling off for a minute before I attack the wardrobe problem again.

As I have often observed, it is not easy being me.  My weight loss goals seem further away than ever — and I thought I was being so GOOD this week: no candy, no cookies, no ice cream! A lovely blouse I purchased recently, after trying it on to be sure it is not too tight in my upper arms, turns out to be, you guessed it, too tight in my upper arms.  As well as elsewhere.  I bought it recently, and according to the scale I have not gained weight since then, but….  Maybe my scale needs new batteries.

To make matters worse, I started hot flashing.  I can’t wear leggings!  I can’t wear a camisole under that white shirt!  I can’t wear that black top!  I can’t wear anything!  AAAAAAUUUUUGGGGHHHH!  Oh, OK, I did not scream.  I just came downstairs to, as I said, cool off.  Sitting still in front of a fan is quite effective for that.  I highly recommend it.

I see I am over 250 words.  That, by my convoluted rules for myself, is respectable, especially for a Lame Friday Post.  I hope your weekend is beginning more smoothly than mine.  I shall post further updates as events warrant.

Facing the Music

A musical weekend awaits me.  Tomorrow, Steven and I will drive into Utica, NY (not a far drive) to the Stanley Theatre to see the band America (you don’t have to italicize band names, do you? I should know these things).  I have not been to the Stanley in over 20 years (yikes!  I just now figured that out).  It was beautiful then, and I believe they have made improvements since.

Just to give you an idea.

The event is a fundraiser for the Herkimer County Historical Society, one of my favorite organizations.

Saturday our friend Tracy is coming to visit, and we are going to see a folk group, Jam Crackers in Holland Patent.  We have seen them before; they are wonderful.  Tracy may get here earlier in the day, so we can get in a Mohawk Valley adventure or two as well.

Tracy’s visit is one reason I have been so distracted from my blogging duties this week:  we have been frantically cleaning the house.  Tracy nicely said that as long as she had a path to get through she was fine, but, well, we had to excavate the path anyways.  I utilized my old favorite cleaning protocol: the stuff-and-cram method.  We’ll worry about organization at a later date.

So this is my Non-Sequitur Thursday post for the week.  Or I guess we could call it a Preview of Coming Attractions.  Discuss among yourselves.
