Words Are Not Forthcoming

I thought of that title earlier, when I was working on a letter to a friend.  I feel it is quite pathetic to be unable even to write a letter.

Eventually I turned to a new page in my notebook (yes, a spiral-bound paper notebook with a pen) and actually wrote something.  One word followed another and I soon had almost a whole page, front and back.  Was it any good?  I can’t tell.  What I can tell is that I need to get a better grip on this novel I am allegedly writing.

Full disclosure:  I am having difficulty in maintaining my grip at all these days.  Yesterday at work I spent a good part of the day telling people I was at the end of my rope.  A poster back in the ’70’s (it may have been an Argus poster, remember those?) said that if you get to the end of your rope, you should tie a knot and hang on.  I think you should swing.  It is fun to swing on a rope.  Or, if you are feeling vindictive, you could make a noose and go after whoever drove you to the end of the rope.  Just to threaten!  I am not recommending murder!

Well, that brings me over 200 words.  I’m going to call it Wuss-out Wednesday and drive on.  I am still working on the post about my Virtual Boilermaker 15K.  I trust eventually words will be forthcoming.

Tired But Running And Posting

I just sat at my laptop and typed in 444 words of a blog post.  There are more words to be written, but I could not write them today.  Judge me if you are so inclined.  I am having a Tired Tuesday.

This is me tired.

I do not look like this right now, at least not the hair-do or outfit.  It is me after I ran a Virtual 5K to benefit the Little Falls Food Pantry.  I must have written a blog post about it, since the picture is in my Media Library.   My facial expression might be similar, because I am still recovering from running my Virtual Boilermaker 15K on Sunday.  That is what the 444 words were about.

This is me all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed before the run.

Is “bright-eyed and bushy-tailed”  a cliche or an acceptable idiom?  Or is it a retro expression which adds color to the post?  I fear it is the least flattering option.

I went running this afternoon, thus making a traditional Running Commentary Post a possibility.  My main comment is that my legs felt pretty awful to begin with and pretty terrific at the end.  I like to remember these things, because it is motivation to keep running!

In the meantime,  I shall continue to work on the post about my 15K.  Additionally,  I still hope to run the Mini- Maker at Copper City Brewing in Rome on Sunday Sept. 13.  As always, I hope you’ll stay tuned.

A Monstrous Moment

He’s got things all wrapped up.

Yes, it is another Monstrous Monday Post.  I am not even sure I can manage that, but I will try.  Don’t mind me; I’m having a moment.  For the past two months I’ve been having a moment.  I expect to get over it soon.

I need a little spookiness to cheer me up!

This is a neighbor’s Halloween display from last year.  I must begin my own Halloween decorating soon.  That will be nice.

He is hot, yes.

In other cheerful news, I just read that Peter Cushing is the Star of the Month for TCM in October.  That means Hammer Horror!  Yay!

Speaking of Masters of Horror…

Here are a few more fellows who I’d like to see featured by TCM:  Basil Rathbone, Boris Karloff, Peter Lorre, and Vincent Price.

Yum, yum!

I thought I ought to include Christopher Lee as well.  No doubt there are others I should include, but there will be other Monstrous Mondays.

Regular readers know who my favorite is!

Here are a few actual monsters, just to get back to the theme of the day.

She needs a new outfit.

I close with another of my at-home monsters, Bonita.  Isn’t she elegant?  And that brings me over 200 words.  Freudian typo:  I started to put years instead of words.  How old I feel?  Or how long some things seem to take?  Anyways, it’s better than 200 pounds!

Media Library, Can You Help Me Now?

Hello, and welcome to another Slacker Saturday.  The only remotely useful thing I did today was a run of just over an hour.  I went on to feel discouraged as I got on Facebook to see numerous posts by people who had run their Virtual Boilermaker 15K, most of them in well under two hours.  Of course I was happy for and impressed by these people.  But I feel… unworthy.

My plan is to run the mini maker at Copper City Brewing in Rome next Sunday.  I hope they are not too impatient with me.  I rear I will be an elephant amongst gazelles.

But never mind my running problems.  I need to make a blog post, and I have done very little that is blog-worthy today.  Yes, I suppose I could do another Running Commentary Post.  Only I really do not feel like revisiting this morning’s thunk-fest.

My favorite!

When in doubt, throw in a picture.  I did not include Nosferatu in my Non-Sequitur Thursday Post,  but I noticed him in my Media Library just now and said, “Ooh!”

Now some people may say that if a blogger has not much to say, she might like to refrain from making a blog post that day.  I found a pat answer for that, also in my Media Library:

Kafka knew from insanity.

That is my problem!  I am not writing enough!  I know, some of you are looking at this post and quoting Truman Capote: “That’s not writing,  that’s typing.”  How literary of you.

Is this the monster Kafka was talking about?

Writing or typing, I am over 250 words.  I call that respectable.  Happy Saturday,  my friends!

What? No Nosferatu?

I had thought about making another Running Commentary Post, because I went for a long(ish) run, but then I thought a Throwback Thursday Post would be more fun.  Let’s see what I can find in my Media Library.

Why have I never run this again?

This is from the inaugural East Herkimer Fire Department 5K in October 2017.  I ran it and had a very good time.  For one reason or another I have not run it again.  I’ll have to look for it this year, if they have it.  You never know these days.

A favorite event in Little Falls, NY.

Here is a September event which has been sadly canceled this year, the Mohawk Valley Garlic and Herb Festival. Mmmm… garlic!

Another sight at the Festival.

Just thought I’d show some garlic as well.

Well, this is lopsided.  One 5K logo and three pictures of the garlic festival.  What else can I find?

A dramatic moment indeed.

You knew I would get back to theatre sooner or later.  This is a shot from Fabulous and Fatal, the murder mystery we presented to benefit the Herkimer County Historical Society last October.  When, oh when, will my drama friends and I murder again?

One of my all-time favorite pictures.

I guess this is kind of a Scattered Throwback Thursday.  Oh wait!  It’s OK, because it is Non-Sequitur Thursday!  Phew!

Comedy on the Run

To begin with,  it was not a blister on the bottom of my foot,  it was a sliver.  Apparently I cannot tell the difference without closer examination.   In my defense, it started hurting after a run, not after I had been walking around barefoot or at work.  Metal splinters are an occupational hazard at my place of employment, and, yes, they can find their way into one’s shoes.  But I discovered the splinter this morning, and my purpose now is to write more about yesterday’s run.

Regular readers know I am a friendly sort, and I love to call out greetings to passers-by.  In pre-Covid times, I would stop and pet dogs, but now I am more aware of social distances.

As I ran by the apartment building at the end of my street, I called hello to a couple sitting outside, and they returned the greeting.  As I ran by Trinity Lutheran Church, I saw a lady I knew.  She called out encouragement and I thanked her.  After that, I saw few people till I encountered a little girl riding a bike in the residential area behind Valley Health.  I made my usual joke.

“That’s what I need!  A set of wheels!”

She smiled politely, humoring the crazy old lady.

Going up the long hill, a pick-up truck passed me and pulled into a driveway.  A young man was getting out as I reached it.

“I almost jumped into the back of that truck!” I yelled.  He laughed.

As I mentioned yesterday, it was not as difficult getting to the top of the hill as in previous runs.  Dare I hope I am getting into shape (I mean a shape other than round and puffy)?  Just after I crested the hill, I saw a lady sitting on her front stoop with a stroller next to her.  A very cute dog started barking at me from the stroller.

“Oh, lady,” I said, “Would you push me home in that stroller?”

She laughed, and the dog continued to bark.  Yes, it is Comedy on the Run by Mohawk Valley Girl.  Hey, that is not a bad title.  Or do I flatter myself?

Toward The Boilermaker

It ought to be time for this blog to become All Boilermaker All the Time.  I don’t know that I will do that, but I thought I would attempt a Running Commentary Post today.  I did not run on Sunday, because I had a blister on the bottom of one foot.  What was that all about?  I have good sneakers, and I wore running socks!  I did not run Monday, because, well, Monday.  The bottom of my foot still felt a little sore, but I did not dare take another day off.

I have been trying to get my butt kicked a little more on weekday runs, so I headed towards the residential area behind Valley Health.  Regular readers may remember that there is a particularly long hill I fear and love.  As I ran, I considered going up the hill to Herkimer College instead but eventually settled on my original plan (full disclosure: not without cravenly considering a few easier routes).

Once again I attempted to pick up the pace.  I hope to run under a 14-minute mile, and I feel quite frustrated that it is even a question.  When I was in the army, a 10-minute mile was a leisurely pace!  It was faster than I wanted to run, which in fact was the pace I sought in the army.  Full disclosure:  sometimes At All is faster than the pace I want to run.

I made it up the hill with huffing and puffing but actually very little problem.  I maintained a pace of less than 13 1/2  minutes per mile.  My run was just over three miles (I kept going for a 42 minute total), so there is no guarantee I can maintain that pace.  But you never know.

I have not shared some of the amusing little incidents of my run, so perhaps I will make this a two-parter.  Then I am one post closer to All Boilermaker All The Time!

Not Much Brain, But I Love My Monsters!

I am too tired for anything but a Monstrous Monday Post.  Yes, this is often the case on a Monday.  Perhaps I party too heartily on the weekends.  Then again, at my age, I believe I should be congratulated for partying in any degree.  If you do not agree, go ahead and judge me.  I will somehow survive.

Do you suppose she is judging him?

Here is one of my favorite shots from one of my favorite movies, The Brain That Wouldn’t Die.  I should be able to give such a withering side eye!

“Was somebody looking for a brain?”

Ah, here is the appropriate monster for a day like today, The Brain From Planet Arous.  I love to share this picture on days when I feel I have little or no brain myself.  Unfortunately,  I seem to experience those days more and more lately.

“I thought you were looking for me.”

I also wanted to share a picture of my all time favorite,  Nosferatu.  I confess to having a lot of favorite monsters and movies.  I love different ones for different reasons.  Well, why should I limit my enjoyment?  I choose instead to spread my love around!

After all, a boy’s best friend is his mother.

Speaking of love, I close with this sweet picture.  Full disclosure:  I am not all that familiar with this series of movies.  Perhaps at some future date.  In the meantime, Happy Monday!

Would Svengoolie Like My Container Garden?

He is fine, yes!

So far the highlight of my day was watching a DVR’d episode of Svengoolie.  How I went so many years of my life without this show… Oh well, I can watch it now.

However, I do not mean to make my blog post about Svengoolie, nor yet Snapped, which I have also been enjoying this Sunday.  Still, I have mentioned them.  Will that qualify this as a Non-Sequitur Sunday Post?  I hope so.

Svengoolie, Snapped and Susan!

When I began to realize I had almost nothing to say on a blog post, I went outside to take a picture of my Brown-eyed Susans, which are still growing prolifically.  I put the bucket in front of them earlier to prop them up, as they had begun to droop.  I guess it is a little unsightly.  I’ll have to come up with something else .

Pretty!

Next I went put front for a shot of my Johnny Jump-ups.  Aren’t they doing well?  I took another picture while I was at it.

An unknown plant.

You can’t really see this one very well.  I have no idea what it is, but it started growing where my peonies were after I cut them down.  I decided to let it live.  I’ll let you know if it amounts to anything.

I can only eat so much pesto, after all.

Back on the deck, I got a shot of my put of control basil.  I have not made as good use of it as I may have.  I wonder if I can dry it and use it this winter.

Not the most visually appealing display.

I took a picture of a couple other plants that were doing well.  My container garden is not as beautiful as I would like.  If I swept the deck and rearranged the pots, it would help.  However, as it becomes increasingly obvious that I will host no gatherings in the foreseeable future, I have become discouraged.

However, one must not give in to discouragement.  On the brighter side, I made my Sunday Post on Sunday.  And it wasn’t a Wrist to Forehead Sunday.  I’m going to call that a win.
