I Take a Break on Wrist to Forehead Sunday

I am having yet another Wrist to Forehead Sunday.  If only I had a chaise lounge, I would swoon on it in a most dramatic fashion.  Alas, I could not stay there for a week or more, which is what I feel I need to do.

I went running this morning.  It was not a bad run, and I petted a few dogs along the way.  I thought of doing a Sunday Running Commentary post,  but my ennui overcame me long before I could put stylus to Tablet or fingers to keyboard.

Steven and I went on a minor Mohawk Valley Adventure,  to Napoli’s Italian Bakery and Deli in Uitca.  I must write a blog post about that, perhaps even an article for Mohawk Valley Living magazine (the deadline is tomorrow. Yikes!).

Good food there!

Returning home, we watched an episode of Svengoolie featuring Revenge of the Creature.  It was nowhere near as good as Creature of the Black Lagoon.  No Julie Adams, and a nice dog came to a bad end.  We hate that!

What, I ask you, is the good of the Creature of the Black Lagoon without Julie Adams?

We looked at an episode or two of Snapped while we had something to eat, and are now watching Sudden Fear with Joan Crawford, Jack Palance and Gloria Grahame.

Quite the side eye Jack is giving Gloria!

I am revisiting the question I asked on Lame Post Friday.  Do I cut myself too many breaks?  I still do not know.  However, I am over 250 words.  I call that OK.  Happy Sunday, everyone!

What a Bad Blogger Am I

I had vowed not to be posting at 4:30 in the morning, yet here I am.  We’ll call it a Blogger’s Sad Day.  You see Steven lost a dear friend yesterday, who was the mother of a dear friend.  He was so sad, I took him out to cheer him up.

Just to plug a local business.

We had some food at Fat Cat’s Fish Fry, then went to Applebee’s, where we still had money on a gift card my parents gave us.  More importantly, it was Winesday, half price bottles of wine.  It was not my smartest idea. I got home (and I will just mention that I was OK to drive but foolishly poured myself more wine once there), Steven went to sleep, and I typed in the following:

Oh, this sucks.  I need to make a blog post,  yet I do not have a proper stylus to do so.

One would think the predictive text would help in such a situation.  However, that is not the case. Oh crap.  What should. I do now?

How about I add a picture or two?

Huh?

OK, I have really no idea what this is or what it is from. I suppose I might just as well admit that these are things have have been posted under my auspices.  How do these things happen?  I have no idea.

Who would not subscribe to such a sentiment?

I am tired and ready to let myself go to a superior text.  Any takers?  Oh dear.

There were such interlopers now.   But how can we confront them now?

Back to the present, I see it is obvious that I drank and typed.  I am embarrassed and inclined to backspace it all out.  Yet, I feel it is right to show my foibles.  Let’s face it, I am mostly cringing because I know my mother will read this.

Incidentally,  I remember where the picture came from.  It was hanging on the wall at The Celtic Harp (on an occasion when I was NOT driving).  Apparently I drink and click, too.

Maybe I Am The Peanut Gallery

Once again my plan of writing my blog post in advance did not work out.  Some fellow writers will understand and sympathathize with my apparent inability to write, others, including a good number of non-writers, will scoff and tell me to get up off my lazy duff and WRITE, damn you!  Sometimes I find my own self in the latter category.

I have a few Mohawk Valley Adventures to write posts about. Unfortunately,  before writing any this evening, Steven and I got out and about and ended up at Applebee’s for Winesday.  After splitting a bottle of Chardonnay,  I feel disinclined for further activities. What a bum am I!

With a new year and new decade (and, please, do not any of you be didactic and tell me the new decade technically begins in 2021), I have been trying to write more.  Full Disclosure:  I have not met with much success in this endeavour. Any suggestions from my lovely readers?  Further Disclosure: my first impulse was to type “from the peanut gallery,”  but I was afraid people would take it amiss.

So I guess that is two questions I have:  Are there any suggestions to increase my writing output?  And: Does anybody reading this mind being referred to as the peanut gallery?  Please submit any answers as comments below.  I warn you, if nobody expresses an opinion, I will feel free to refer to my readers as The Peanut Gallery forevermore.

Staying in Some Sort of Shape

In my defense, I have not made a late post at four in the morning in a while (OK, 4:16, according to my laptop, if you want to be didactic) (you know who you are) (and yes, I am on my laptop, ten-finger typing.  It’s fun!).  On the other hand, as regular readers know, I am too lazy (or maybe too impatient; is that better? Discuss amongst yourselves) to go back and check these things, so my defense may be a whole lot of hooey.  I can’t worry about these things now.

I felt too sick to my stomach to make a blog post last night.  I expect I ate too much at supper.  It is a sad reflection on me when I am gaining my holiday weight through a mere week-day supper of leftovers.  But it was quite tasty.  Perhaps the run I took helped burn a few calories, but the fit of my pants this morning (and I specifically washed the fat old lady pants for just such an emergency!) would refute that forlorn hope.

Yes, I took a run and fully intended to make a Running Commentary post.  The weather in Mohawk Valley is veering between bi-polar and “Go home, December, you’re drunk.”  I can’t quite remember Monday (I’m having that sort of a week, in case you couldn’t guess), but Tuesday had some relatively high temperatures: 40’s and 50’s, but was supposed to get colder in the evening.  It had rained during the day, encouraging snow melt, so I was a little concerned that it would turn to ice right about the time I wanted to run.

However, I set out around 3:30 p.m., having paused only to put on running gear and throw a load of laundry into the washer (regular readers may recall that is one of my few instances of multitasking).  I wore leggings (nylon long johns which I often wear in lieu of pantyhose, to be exact), my long-sleeved ARMY t-shirt, and a knitted headband.  It was a little warmer, after all.  No need for hat and mittens!

As I have often observed, running after an eight-hour work day is a far different activity from running after a good night’s sleep on the weekend.  Still, one must persevere.  For the main reason, the Reindeer Run 5K is THIS SATURDAY!!!  I felt prepared this past weekend.  I felt distinctly less so yesterday.  You’ll have that, I told myself (one of my favorite phrases of self-encouragement), and, well, persevered.

And it was not that bad of a run.  Some of the sidewalks were bare-ish, but I mostly stuck to the road.  My experiments with running on the sidewalk did not lead to disaster, but my feet definitely did not feel as secure.  I kept to the less busy residential roads but of course could not avoid all traffic. Parked cars were an especial annoyance, but after all, people have to park somewhere.  I hope I am not unreasonable.  I kept left side facing traffic, and stayed over as far as I could without running in deep puddles.

I ended up going for 26 minutes.  I hope that is good enough for maintaining my 5K shape for a few more days (let us not further discuss my actual shape!).  Tonight we have shopping and dinner plans, but I hope to run Thursday and PERHAPS another short run Friday.  And a pasta dinner.  That is my favorite part of a race: carbing up the night before!

Love Those Googly Eyes!

One of the Mohawk Valley Adventures Steve, Kim and I had on Saturday was to go to the Basket Raffle at Mohawk Reformed Church.  We love basket raffles!

Kim and some people I don’t know browsing.

We each got ten tickets for $5 and walked around five tables of baskets.  So hard to decide which ones to try for!  I considered getting more tickets, but I was trying to be frugal.

The drawing was not till Sunday.  As the afternoon wore on, I sadly accepted that we hadn’t won anything.  Then the phone rang!  I had won the Now That’s Crafty basket.

“The one with the googly eyes?”  I asked.  Yes!

I went to the church after work to get it.  I told the ladies I was very excited about the googly eyes.

“And there’s a $10 Michael’s gift card,” one of the ladies said.

“I forgot about that,” I said.

“You can buy even more googly eyes,” she said.

I just might!

See the googly eyes?

Now I can get all kinds of crafty for Christmas.  I’ll be sure to write blog posts about it when I do.

Waterfront Lunch

On Saturday after I got home from the RCIL Character Brunch,  I told Steven it was too nice a day to sit home.  I suggested we go somewhere for a drink where we could look outside at the beautiful fall weather.

“And get something to eat,” he said.  Who am I to object to that?

We ended up at the Waterfront Grille in Herkimer, where we like to sit at the bar and order appetizers.  Saturday, however, we got lunch.  I had the Wrap of the Day, which was crab salad, with cole slaw. Steve had Soup and a Half Sandwich, split pea and egg salad respectively.  I tried his egg salad.  Yum!  My sandwich was yummy too.

I forgot to ask her name, but she was a great bartender.

I asked the bartender to pose for a picture with Steven, for my blog post.  Then Steven took one of me.

I don’t remember what was in my hand that got cut off.

As we sat enjoying our wine, the bartender put upside down shot glasses by us, to show somebody had bought us another round.  It was Rocky, the owner, who was sitting at the other end of the bar.  How nice was that!  Steven wanted to purchase one of the shot glasses for his collection.  Rocky agreed to let us have it for a very attractive price.

Steven’s new shot glass.

I guess I didn’t do such a good job getting an uncluttered picture.  Oh well, that’s my life.  It was a nice souvenir from great lunch. I can’t wait till we go there again!

The Waterfront Grille is located at 800 Mohawk St., Herkimer NY, phone number 315-717-0700.

Me and the History Mystery

I had a great time today at one of my favorite places,  Herkimer County Historical Society.   I was there with my husband Steven,  sister Cheryl, niece Kimi, great nephew Sheppie and great niece Evie.  We were helping Sheppie solve the History Mystery.

Sheppie was given a pencil (he picked a green one, my favorite color!), clipboard and paper.  He had to look at various displays and answer questions.  We helped him write the answers, either by spelling the word while he wrote it or writing it in for him.  It took a while, because we were having fun looking at all the displays, not just the ones that held the answers.

Cheryl, Evie and Sheppie admire a Remington typewriter.

We explained to Sheppie what a typewriter was.  I’ll have to haul one of my collection out for him to play with one day.

Cheryl helping Sheppie spell an answer.

I had to get a shot with a smile!

Evie and her Aunt Kim.

The mystery took us upstairs.   I always stop and admire the woodwork, but Sheppie was more interested in getting up those stairs and finding more answers.

Sheppie trucked up those stairs!

Evie peeked through the banister at me.

We admired the displays in the hall before spending some time in the dollhouse room.

We were all impressed with the big wheeled bike.

Uncle Steve and Kim.

We all loved the dollhouse room.

I was delighted to introduce Sheppie, Evie and Kim to the historic society.  Cheryl and of course Steven have been there with me before.  What a wonderful source of education and entertainment!  If you have never delved into local history,  I highly recommend you make a visit to your nearest historical society.

Herkimer County Historical Society is located at 400 and 406 N. Main St., Herkimer, NY, phone number 315-866-6413.  They are open 10 a.m. to  4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Slacking on a Semblance of a Post

I was going to have a Scattered Slacker Saturday post.  I have done a few things this weekend so far and thought I could write some semblance of a post merely listing them. However, as I sit here typing one letter at a time with the stylus on my Tablet I must confess, this is not so. I do not want to make a blog post at all!!!

I can only hope it has been a while since I have done a post about “I Can’t Make a Blog Post Today,” because that is just about all I am up to today.  How utterly dreadful of me. But why should I worry?  It has happened before and will happen again.  As usual, we must make the best of things.

Today has been a day of highs and lows for me.  We had a great couple of performances as Mummers Along the Mohawk.  Additionally, I enjoyed some musical performances at the Great American Irish Festival in Frankfort,  NY.  Why should I not write a blog post about one of those things?

For one reason, I am tired.  I went running this morning and did a load of laundry which I hung out on the line.  It has been a hot and humid day.  I continued to have Mohawk Valley Adventures after the aforementioned performance. And I am not feeling in the happiest mood for reasons too tiresome to mention.

Well, never mind my unhappy mood.  These things change with the passage of time.  I have made, as I hoped, some semblance of a blog post.  I will attempt a better blog post tomorrow.   As always,  I hope you’ll stay tuned.

Another Yummy Interlude

We needed to get my husband Steven a ticket for the Great American Irish Festival in Frankfort, so we headed to the Price Chopper in Little Falls.  Of course I cannot go to Little Falls for just one thing, so we also got a mid afternoon snack at Ruggiero’s Trattorio.

One of my favorite places for drinks and food.

We have eaten there before.  Our favorite place to sit is the bar, which is where we sat today.  We had some Chardonnay.  I got a bowl of French Onion Soup while Steven had a slice of pizza.  I had a bite or two of his pizza.  It had sausage, peppers and mushrooms. Yum!  I adored my soup. It felt so good on my stomach!

Steven enjoying a sip or two.

A fellow sat two seats down from us at the bar and gave the bartender a bottle of blueberry beer.

“I have to love a guy who pulls a bottle of beer out of his pocket.” I told him.

He told us how he likes to try different kinds of beer, but you often have to purchase a six- or twelve-pack at a time, so he sometimes gives some away to people he thinks will like them.  I referred him to Beer Belly Bob’s in Ilion, because he has a rack where you can mix and match a six-pack of craft beers.

We had a fun time there. I also got a picture of our bartender Carly.

A good bartender with one of my favorite names.

Ruggiero’s Trattorio is located at 546 E. Main St., Little Falls, NY, phone number 315-823-1414.  They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m to 9 p.m., Sunday noon to 7 p.m.

Another Yummy Meal

I continue my posts about last Saturday’s Mohawk Valley Adventures with yet another shout-out to one of my favorite local spots, Salvatore’s in Herkimer, NY.

After leaving Little Falls after the Cheese Festival,  Steven, Kim and I were feeling peckish.  Salvatore’s sounded good.  As we walked in we saw our friend Thom, who played The Man With The Music in Where’s the Cheese Monger?, the Cheese play I referenced in yesterday’s post.  Of course we all sat together.

My dining companions.

Thom had a slice of pizza and a beer.  I had a chicken wrap sandwich with pasta salad.   Steven had a fish sandwich with fries.  I completely do not remember what Kim had, but she drank Moscato while Steven and I enjoyed Chardonnay.

As we sat there, Thom said something to Salvatore behind the corner.

“Are you THE Salvatore?”  I asked.  I had never met him.  Naturally I wanted to take a picture.

The man responsible for many great meals!

We had a fun time as always.  I know I have given many shout-out to Salvatore’s.   At least it makes a change from whining about how I can’t make a blog post today!

Salvatore’s is located at 650 1/2 West German Street,  Herkimer NY, phone number 315-866-2600.  They are open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
