A Walk in the Cold

I have been way too sedentary with the bad weather, so I thought I would take a walk with my phone and make a Pedestrian Post with Pictures.  For one reason, it was supposed to be warmer today: double digits at least!  I wrote a post card to an aunt, thinking I could walk by the post office, put on a coat, hat, mittens, and boots (not in that order), and set out.

The beauty part about walking through the snow is that it is more of an effort than walking on bare pavement.  Full disclosure:  sometimes I went into the road and walked on bare pavement.  I need to get out and walk more.  My legs got tired easily!

I believe the time was accurate.

This is not the first picture I took, but I thought it would look good as the photo showing when I share the link on Facebook.  It is on Albany Street in Herkimer, in front of Crazy Otto’s Empire Diner, which I did not get a picture of.  Silly me. What I would have liked to get a picture of was Meyers Park. It was a grey and gloomy day, and the bare trees looked really cool against the sky.  The gazebo looked a little forlorn, not at all how it looks when the bands are on it at the Herkimer Downtown ChowDown.  But I had no faith in my abilities, and I could not decide which angle to shoot from anyways.

Yes, I stop here sometimes; judge me if you like (you know who you are).

If I had wanted to walk with a nefarious purpose, as I did on a long ago blog post, I could have stopped at The End Zone.  Don’t think I wasn’t tempted.  It was colder than I thought it was!

Another local watering hole of note.

Likewise, I did not stop at Pete’s Tavern.  I kept walking, checking my watch to see how long I had walked.  The wind picked up, and I was sorry I had not worn a scarf.  I soon decided three pictures was enough, the walk was long enough, I was going home!  By this time I had walked far enough that the walk ended up being just over a half hour.  That seems healthy enough for me.

And my blog post is approaching 400 words.  That seems healthy, too.  I’ll try for a Mohawk Valley Adventure tomorrow.

Not a Competition on Wrist to Forehead Sunday

I have been busy all morning thinking I was not getting anything done, then not getting anything done.  It is not easy being me, but it is mildly entertaining.  I pause in my inactivity for a Wrist to Forehead Sunday post.  It is frigidly cold out today, as it was yesterday.  I ventured out yesterday and intend to do so again today, to go to the Elks Lodge for some fellowship and perhaps a glass of wine.  I will bundle up.

Look how chubby my cheeks are!

The coat I am wearing used to be Steve’s, although he rarely wore it.  He was more of a jacket guy.  One of our rummage sale finds, I think.  I do not remember where we got the hat, but it is one of those hood-like things that wreaks havoc on your hair-do.  Luckily, I rarely do my hair.  The scarf is one I made, using up several stray balls of yarn.

The reason I took the picture is that a friend posted a selfie on Facebook of him with a winter hat pulled all the way down over his face.  Then he put glasses on and took another picture.  It was very amusing, so I got inspired.  I posted the above selfie and told him to eat his heart out.  Then I said it was just kidding; it was not a competition.

I guess that little story is no reason for me to swoon, dramatically posed with the back of one wrist to my forehead.  Never mind.  It is a blog post.  I’m posting it.  Once again, I thank you for tuning in.

It Was a Sauvignon Kind of Day

I have not done a wine tasting post in a while.  In fact, I go to fewer wine tastings these days, but Valley Wine and Liquor in Herkimer has them almost every weekend.  In fact, many area liquor stores do, but Valley is the closest one for me.  When I still worked it was oh so handy to stop by on my way home on a Friday.  When I would go adventuring with my friend Kim on Saturdays, we often stopped in to taste, if something was going on.  I have a lot less wine in my house since I stopped being so faithful!

This weekend, Valley Wine and Liquor has tastings Thursday through Sunday.  I speculate that they are helping people get stocked up for Super Bowl parties.  I have not been invited to a Super Bowl party, but one never knows when a last minute invite may come along.  I needed exercise, so I walked down to the store Thursday afternoon.  I questioned my ability to carry multiple bottles of wine home but hoped for the best.  Sasha, one of the regular pourers, was sampling Bonterra Organic Wines from California.

We love wine!

We started out with Cabernet Sauvignon, which I declared very tasty.  Regular readers know I do not have a sophisticated palate and rarely taste notes of anything, but I liked this.  I liked the Red Blend, too, but not as much.  Alas, I neglected to ask what it was a blend of so cannot tell you.

For whites, I was quite taken with the Sauvignon Blanc.  I told Sasha I found I liked California Sauvignon Blancs best.  She said she liked all California wines.  Indeed, there are great wines coming from CA.  I liked the Chardonnay a lot, finding it not the least bit buttery.  I know some people like buttery chardonnays but I prefer the crispy, unoaked ones.

I purchased the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Sauvignon Blanc.  I confess I did not enjoy my walk home.  Two bottles of wine are heavy for an old, un-muscular broad like me!  It reminded me of a blog post I made years ago, when I walked home from the much missed Ramar’s Liquors with my even more missed dog Tabby and a box of wine.  I could have made a whole post about yesterday’s walk home but prefer to give a shout-out to a local business instead.

Valley Wine and Liquor is located at 326 S. Caroline St., Herkimer, NY.  You can check their website at shopvalleywine.com for the tastings schedule.

Lame is the Answer

Oh dear, I wanted to make my Lame Post Friday blog post before going out adventuring today, but I sit here at my Chromebook feeling headachey and dull.  Where’s that sparkling personality I thought I had?  And here we come to the ugly truth about me.  Never mind.  I want to make a blog post and I will.   Quick, throw in a picture to lighten  up the mood.

Who could be uncheered by a snowman?

I have not seen any snowmen recently.  It has not been warm enough for the snow to pack, unfortunately.  The caption, by the way, is an homage to Winnie the Pooh.

You KNOW I am going to enter!

Here is a sign I have not seen in a while, because I have not been running.  I really want to start again, but with below zero wind chills and ice on the roadways, I keep putting it off. I have been saying I am going to run the Boilermaker 15K in Utica, NY this July but have not yet registered.  I heard open registration started, so I better get moving on it.  It will be good for a few blog posts anyways.

Bittersweet is the word.

I close on a melancholy note.  I shared this picture on Facebook this morning after it showed up in my Memories.  The mugs were a Christmas gift from my sister Cheryl, the Queen of Christmas, to my dearly missed husband Steve and me. I said that I rarely use these mugs, but perhaps I would today for a cup of hot cocoa.  I recently purchased the necessary ingredients.  Hmm, that motivates me to get out the door and get on with my errands and adventures.  I can return to a steaming mug of hot cocoa.  Maybe I’ll add a shot of moonshine from Dikin Durt Distillery, just to give a local business a shout-out.

Couldn’t Hurt, Might Help

I thought I was feeling better, but it turns out not so much.  I don’t like to go days and days without making a blog post, so I will attempt a Throwback Thursday.  Or maybe a Non-Sequitur Thursday.  No, that’s no good; I can never think of a good headline for those.

Snow, snow, snow.

I have left the house in the last two days, taking walks through the snow but not pausing for pictures.  I really felt I had spent too many days lounging around doing nothing and thought a couple short walks would help.  I guess they kind of sort of did.

It really was a dramatic moment.

I veer into theatre throwback with a shot from 2019.  I may be getting involved in some new theatre shenanigans soon.  I received an email about auditions for Ilion Little Theatre’s next production, Good-bye. Charlie.  Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 16th and 17th at the theatre at 6:30 p.m.  I probably have a meeting to cover on Monday, but I can probably make it on Tuesday.  I like to be in a play.

If only I don’t get snowed in!

I have not had this much snow in my driveway for a long time.  I can only hope for the best for the rest of the winter.  At least I have gotten over 200 words of a blog post for today.  I apologize if I seem less articulate than usual.  I feel sure another couple of good nights’ sleep will put me to rights.

Lame Road to Recovery

I think I am on the mend, but I certainly am not up to any blogworthy activities.  Lucky for me it is Lame Post Friday.

The long road to recovery?

I throw in a picture because I ran dry of words.  I actually still have quite a bit of a headache.  The reason I feel I am on the mend is that I have been able to sleep, at least a little.  I apologize about going on and on about my health.  I try not to be so tiresome.

A more squiggly path.

I think my brain is becoming even more squiggly.  Tomorrow I might try a walk outdoors if the weather is not too bad.  For one reason I have to mail my usual Saturday morning postcards.  I hope I can think of something more cheerful to write than, “I feel so sick!”

A regular stop for me.

I have not taken a walk since Tuesday.  That is unusual for me; I try to walk or run almost every day, although I have not been running much since the snow fell.   Actually it is the ice that bothers me more than the snow.  However, one advantage of being ill is that once I get better, I will be so sick of not moving, I will probably be delighted to go out and take a run.  It will at least make for a better blog post!

Winter Waste Not Want Not

Under the heading Nobody’s Perfect, I missed making my Monday blog post.  Rather than resort to a late Monstrous Monday or an on-time Tired Tuesday (I am a little tired, but never mind), I shall skip ahead and make a Waste Not Want Not Wednesday post.  For one reason, I found three pictures in my phone I have not used.

I have been walking a lot lately.  I find it safer than running, since you never know when ice is lurking beneath the snow.  The beauty part of snow is, it gives you more traction than ice while slowing you down, so you burn more calories with every step.  At least, that is the thought with which I comfort myself when it seems to be taking me forever to get anywhere.  The beauty part about walking is that I can pause to take a picture when something catches my eye.

I did not try to go ice fishing.

I don’t know if this is an actual brook or just a kind of a drainage ditch.  Drainage ditch sounds awfully dirty, and this does not seem unsanitary to me.  I always like to see running water as I walk along.

I would find that cold.

On one walk, I saw this beautiful dog not on a leash.  I took a picture, thinking I should post it on Facebook or something.  However, the pooch did not seem to be wandering, so I knocked on a door and asked the lady who answered if she knew whose dog it was.  She pointed out the house, and I knocked on that door and warned them their dog was loose.  It was my good deed for the day, I guess.

One of my favorite views.

Relaxing after a walk, I enjoy two of my lovely Christmas presents from my parents:  fuzzy socks and soft slippers.  What a delightful thing on a cold winter’s day.

Ooh, look, I am over 300 words and have not once whined over having nothing to blog about.  It can be difficult getting out and about in the winter, but I shall manage something.  As always, I thank you for tuning in.

What Would Rudolf Do?

Oh dear, I missed another day of blogging (I still think blogging is a silly verb, but then blog is a silly word) (then again, I am a particularly silly person, so everything fits in).  I have no excuse.  I did pretty much nothing all day.  Now I am up early-ish, looking at WKTV News, where Eric Gage is telling me to drive carefully.  I am going to meet friends at Java Shop for breakfast in a bit, but I intend to walk.  It will be good exercise and marginally safer than driving.

Must get a better picture of the sign.

I have not been running since Monday, which does not bode well for the Reindeer Run 5K in Little Falls this Saturday (the day after tomorrow, yikes!).  At my age, I cannot afford to take many days off.  I took a good-ish walk on Tuesday (in my defense, it was really cold!).  As I walked, I thought I should have run, because the roads were fairly bare.  They are not so now, and not likely to be so in the foreseeable future.

I can run in the snow!  I’ve done it before!

I don’t know why I feel worried.  I’ll show up, I’ll run, I’ll be slow, I’ll make jokes along the way. I’ll write a blog post about it.  It’ll be great.

As for today, I’m going to bill this as a Non-Sequitur Thursday, also known as At Least It’s A Blog Post.  As always, I thank you for tuning in.

Slacking But Still Blogging!

I am going to make a Slacker Saturday post before I continue to slack.  Full disclosure:  I slack many days.  I have always been kind of a lazy bum.

NOT a slacker.

I am looking at an episode of Columbo, which I found on Roku TV recently.  Regular readers know how much I love Columbo.  Earlier today I went on a two mile run, and after I finish this post I will walk to the post office with my usual Saturday post cards, which I have already written.  I am afraid that is the extent of my productivity today.  Well, I might work on a letter as I go.  No promises.

Good place to eat.

Maybe I will treat myself to dinner later.  There are several good choices in Herkimer. This is the first one I came to in my Media Library.

I could never do my hair this way alone.

How vain of me to share a picture of myself.  It relates to the post, however, because this is from the Ilion Little Theatre production of Prescription: Murder, the first episode of Columbo, which was also a stage play.  I was the murder victim, and I think a lot of people were happy to see me go.  It was probably the only way to shut me up.

It is easier to shut me up from blogging, and I will sign off now.  I hope to have a Mohawk Valley Adventure soon to write a blog about.  When I am done slacking.

Can You See the Rainbow?

My first intention was to make a Running Commentary post about this morning’s run.  However, those are best done soon after the run, while my in-head narration is still fresh in my mind.  So I thought, I know, Waste Not Want Not Wednesday.  The problem with that is, I only have one photo that might go to waste, and I’m not sure it is all that good a one.

It looked much better at the time.

It is a rainbow I saw as I walked away from the post office last Thursday.  I walk to the post office almost every day, because I am trying to send more letters and post cards to family and friends.  It is my small way of trying to brighten up the world.  With my messy handwriting, it is questionable how much brightness I actually provide, but one does what one can.

Who, me? Like wine?

With not much else to say, I share a picture from November 2019, “All packed and ready for Thanksgiving weekend!”  I am looking forward to Thanksgiving.  Food, family, and fun, yes, please.

I have a few Mohawk Valley Adventures planned in the next week or so, raising my hopes that I can get back to daily blogging.  As always, I hope you will stay tuned.
